  • In this video, we show you the easy way to replace the deteriorated foam surround on a Cerwin Vega woofer. We use a 12" woofer in the video, but other speaker brands are similar in design and the way they are repaired. You can use this video as a guide to refoam most speaker brands.

I bought a foam kit for two cerwin vega at15's back in 2021. It looked intimidating, so I put it off as long as I could.
September 2024. I had no choice but to use the repair kit.
It went quite well! Thank you very much for the excellent video and repair kit!

I can't believe that I waited this long to fix my speakers. They have been bad for years and I often thought that I would love to have them thumping again but was scared to death to do it myself. This was such a great video and a great product. Thank you so much for this! To me, there is nothing like the sound of a Cerwin Vega!

I was sick when I thought my Cerwin vega 15" speakers died after years of faithful service! It's the only stereo I've seen that I can play loud enough to mix with our drum set! I was even more sick when I saw the replacement costs of these speakers. Thanks to you, I am now overjoyed! I saveD my great system (with your great product and instructions) for the cost of a couple CDs!!! THANK YOU!!!

These instructions are clear and strong in every regard. Thanks for taking the time to produce this. I regret having purchased my "kit" elsewhere. A heads up for amateurs such as myself - the glue on the cones on my set were a bit more trouble to remove than in the video. I'm not sure what I should have done differently but the alcohol proved insufficient. Perhaps it was the concentration of 70% rather than 90%. Also the foam overlapping the screw holes can get caught up in the threads and pull/twist the foam.

    • @simplyspeakers

Sometimes we use acetone or lacquer thinner when the old glue is extra stubborn.

Wow. Only took me 8 years to see this. Haha. I have a pair of infinity sm82 bookshelf speakers that I refused to get rid of because the sound of those speakers are my soul with any amp. But the foam was trashed, brittle and mostly gone. I noticed on eBay you have the exact foam replacements for them at an incredible price... Along with this expert video presentation, I am confident I can refoam my favorite speakers ever. Thank you so much for your professionalism and attention to detail. 100%

Commenting tonight on March 1, 2024, this video was an invaluable guiding resource while performing my first re-foam. I've long had a pair of Cerwin Vega AT-10's that are still working fine. I recently inherited a free pair of D-3 speakers with deteriorated foam surrounds. I just finished the job and they came out really well. I'm now confident I can repair my AT-10's should the need arise. Solid A-Z instructional. 👍

I (almost) never make recommendations...but I have to hand it to Simply Speakers. I revived a pair of Boston Acoustics HD8s that are probably 30+ years old using one of the kits. I have to admit that there was a little bit of a learning curve on the first one, but the second one went smoothly. It took a while to get the old glue from the old surround out - I used a lot of alcohol (rubbing, not drinking!) and eventually it was clean enough to put in the new surround. The results - truly, these speakers sound like new. Thank you for making a quality product and standing behind it with these great videos. I'm impressed.

I used this guide and the kit from your website to replace damaged old foam on a pair of '94 CV VS-100 woofers. Using the method here, I had absolutely no problems removing the old foam and installing the new foam and the voice coil is dead center without shimming--there is no rubbing at all. I also reused both gaskets no problem. This is my first time doing any speaker repair, so I was very hesitant to do this work myself. Even with your explanation I thought that the voice coil couldn't possibly be centered considering that pretty much everybody else says that removing the dust cap and shimming the voice coil is necessary. However, they were all wrong and you were right! Now my VS-100's look and sound excellent! I just wanted to comment here to thank you for the guide and also to convince anybody else looking to try this method that it does work.
It took me about 4 hours start to finish with all the drying time as well. I used rubbing alcohol but did not put any on the cone itself, i just used an x-acto knife and my fingernail to remove the foam from the edge of the cone and used rubbing alcohol, a knife, and my fingernail to remove the foam from the edge of the speaker frame. The gasket just lifted straight off with a bit of even pressure.
Thank you Simply Speakers! And I strongly encourage anybody who just need to replace foam to use this method, it's very easy if you take your time to be neat and follow the directions above.

I just replaced the surrounds on a pair of Marantz 15" speakers. One was a piece of cake, but I had problems getting the other centered on the "sweet spot". No matter what I did, I kept getting scraping on one side or another. I ended up peeling it back off of the frame and cleaning it up (naphtha works very well). On the next try, I installed it dry (it was a little bit tacky after being cleaned-up) and carefully centered it on the sweet spot, which left it visibly out of center on the frame. I then put a single drop of adhesive at the spot where it was puled over the farthest, then again 90 degrees to each side, and finally one directly across from the first. After letting it set-up a few minutes, and confirming I was still centered, I peeled back the surround between each of the glue spots and glued it down. It worked like a charm.

Best "How To" video for restoring Speakers. I just bought some Cerwin Vega Model 26's from the early 70's. Hopefully the drivers are original. The edge of the speaker cone is flat. Funny, I bought at an Estate Sale and was carrying them to the car and someone offered me $300 for the pair on the spot. I probably should have sold them. Anyway, I ordered the foam kit from Simple Speakers. Waiting for the kit to arrive.

I pulled out my 30 year old Sony speakers to connect them to brand new wiring in a new room with built-in surround wiring. Unfortunately, the two mains were starting to rattle because of the foam surrounds. I did a web search with those speaker model numbers expecting to buy entirely new speakers to put in the cabinets. But info for simply speakers came up - and a kit specifically fitting my speakers. I said heck, why not - $10 per speaker!? It took a few hours over a couple of days to scrape, glue, reattach it all - but they look brand new and sound brand new. Totally amazed and told all my "friends" on facebook about it. Very cool product, and mine actually went on easier than the video. My original foam surrounds were connected to the back of the driver cone, so I didn't have to scrape anything off! :)

Cant thank you enough for this genius idea. My order just came in a couple of hours ago and I'm finished repairing my JL Audio 12's . Video was dead on step by step and this product made it very easy to repair...thanks a bunch

Very good video. My only real critique is that I always cut the surround for the screw holes. It takes almost zero time and minimal risk of accidents. It also makes for an easier installation to not have to push through the surround with the screw.

Thanks so much for offering such a concise and well-explained video on this subject. I have purchased my glue from you guys, and planning on doing a re-foam on some older Infinity speakers that I just picked up. Your video will certainly give me the pointers that I need for a successful job! Thanks again!!

Great information. I have successfully replaced foam surrounds on a few speakers using this. Most importantly after prep is proper use of glue, and using the right amount on the inner ring first, allowing it to self centre as you apply slight force upwards making slight adjustments. Thank you sir!!

This video is amazing. I just ordered surrounds for my Sony SS-U542AV speakers that the foam surrounds just fell out of. I'm looking forward to having these speakers live again!

Brilliant video! Great thorough and easy to understand instructions. It is clear that you have a lot of experience.
Unfortunately I live in Europe and we do have more limited selection of refoam and recone kits and buying from the US gets expensive, due to shipping and customs.
I managed to find a refoam kit for my B&O Beovox MC120.2 locally and refoamed the woofers following your instruction video. The speakers now play like new. I can only positively recommend others to try refoaming their speakers as well. Great way to save money and better for the enviroment, than always throwing out and buying new.
Next step for me would be reconing. I've also watched your video on this, so I think it should be possible for me to do.
Thank you very much for making these videos!
