I just wanted to say that the funny intro made my day a lot better and I've only been watching this channel for a few days, but I think your sense of humor is great, so thank you very much for putting a smile on my face as well as many other's.
In my experience with a punctured foam surround. I cut a patch from an old T-shirt. Then I applied silicone to the patch enough to make it tacky to the touch. Applied the patch to the inner side of the foam surround. Then I added silicone on top of the patch and spread it evenly over the repaired area. The puncture was hardly visible if at all from the front of the surround. The material from the T-shirt & the silicone combination held it all together and worked flawlessly. Hope this helps..
Young man, I'm almost old enough to be your grandfather, and I'm here to say that YOU ARE THE BOMB (Happy Birthday, by the way)! I came here looking for ideas to fix my 5.5 inch 100W midrange, where the part you repaired in the video is almost all deteriorated. Don't know why. But here I learned from you about the foam at WalMart, and your favorite glue. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!
E6000 is one of the best glues/patch materials for subwoofers or speakers. It's extremely durable and can stretch amazingly well and I've used it to repair many speakers and subs. So yeah I'll "salvage" audio equipment from behind my local car audio shop and in a attempt to discourage such actions alot of the time they puncture the cones. But yeah E6000 9/10 times does the trick alone ...
Bro I have the best way of doing this! I have repaired 3/4 inch holes of missing surround!! And its unnoticeable in most cases. Should have made a video on a l7 last night. A. Use a piece of painters tape on the underside B. Fill in the hole with windshield adhesive. Smooth the stuff out by wetting a finger with soapy water and smooth it out. Let it dry. C. Remove the painters tape from the underside. Windshield sealant adhesive is the perfect color and has the right amount of flex when its cured. That stuff cures fast also!!!
I literally did exactly this and poked a hole in my surround with a power screwdriver. Maybe not a subwoofer but for lighter applications (mine is a 6" guitar amp woofer), I found a simpler lighter solution as well:" I remembered how insanely strong wet suit cement was and you could use that but if you can't find that, there is liquid electrical tape, brush on several thin layers - its extremely strong and totally flexible. And it doesn't add a big "patch" to the surround. Again, a subwoofer may need something stronger like your patch - but for less aggressive applications, give this a try.
I did this the first time i installed my comp R 12s. I ended up using gorilla tape on the inside, fixed it. Withstands the high vegas summer temps too. Its been 2 years now
Bro, you saved me such a hassle. A shoe box punctured my brand new sub. This really was a great idea. Straight life hack lol 😂 Thanks for the enthusiastic video!
If you have a Dollar Tree nearby you can get the foam and the crazy glue all purpose adhesive for a buck each except it's a small container. From what I can tell Crazy Glue All Purpose Adhesive, Shoe Goo, and E6000 glue are the same thing.
Stepside1986 funilly enough, from model working I can say that nail glue from salon stores works incredible. And it's quick drying so you can use it in a hurry like at a show or something. Just putting in my personal opinion, though.
Samuel Woodward salon nail gloe is just CA glue and it is ok for temporary fix but will fail because it dries out the material and eventually will cause a bigger hole because it will tear the material overtime..
I did this to my NVX 5mins after taking it out the box. same type of perforation....that's how I ran em at all the shows last season man. fixed it w G.E. silicone. see u out there this season broseph.
Recently ordered a second kicker CompC and another box for the truck, got the kicker for half price because it has a very small cut in the surround, I'm gonna try my good quality electrical tape as a bandaid first, if not I will definitely put this method to use. I only came here for help with the cut but your intro made me laugh my ass off, good mix of humor and advice, love this channel. Can't wait to get this dual sub setup going, thanks Exo!
I use one of those bit holders on my drill that slides down over the screw head so it can’t slip out. Works like a charm but I’ve definitely slipped up and poked a hole in my surround before when i first got into car audio back in the 90s haha. Cool to see the patch idea worked well and using an old scrap surround from a recone is good idea also. Maybe not the prettiest repair but functional until a recone can be done. Btw Im running a pair of those vcw 12s on an audio legion 1600 currently and love them! They hit the lows , bang hard, and have great SQ to boot! thinking about throwing my second 1600.1 on them!
just bought 2 new skar 12inch went to install them in the trunk, my lazy ass didnt want to remove the box so tried it with one hand and sure as shit punch right through the damn thing.... so here i is hahaha
Back in the day I would use a needle and thread to stitch up the tear, and then silicone over and massage the silicone into the repair, let it cure for 24 hours.... bam! Permanent repair. I actually have an American Bass first generation VFL 10 inch sub that still plays fine till this day. 👍
I used to recone/repair speakers, way way back when. If the customer wanted a cheap fix we just glued the tear and they hold very well. E6000 is better than the latex based glue we had available, and that held very well. I would just glue the tear and not bother with the patch. The E6000 is probably stronger than the foam. Look for black E6000 or the china variant B7000.
This has helped me a lot. Repaired a set 12" kickers so I can hook them up in my girls car. Was gonna use silicone but this method works great with black foam. If you have access to a craft store then stop in there and you can get lucky with finding the right color and thickness.
what up EXO man it's been awhile. I use to watch you back in the day. went up to college and now out and I got alot of catching up to do. haha. glad to see you are still kicking. my old channel was chevyislife.
Question: what kind of effect on sound will there be if you play a sub that has a hole in the surround? Maybe not as bad as this but mine is a straight line cut across the foam. Will there be an affect on the sound at all if so what??
call me crazy but i use a marking tool to mark the wood where the screw will go, then i dril the screws in without the woofer in to be safe . remove them drop the sub in the box and then screw them in by hand. takes a bit longer but never ruined a surround .
EXO I just started watching your videos you are a very happy guy keep your happiness about you that's what makes you yourself reply if you get this message
Will basically last as long as the subwoofer or your chosen glue. They will fail before the repair does, so if you use good glue itll basically last forever
Glad to see you’re not the only one that’s poked a hole in the subwoofer with the screwdriver like that And in that tire brand new 12 inch sub woofer the day I bought it and got it in the box
Gonna try to get a hold on that glue and some thin foam to fix my two Ground Zero subs. Hopefully this will at least keep them safe from cracking even more :) Great video!
Although that can be a little more tricky sometimes, adding some epoxy or thin mending material in the crack could help prevent whatever noise it may be making for you currently. But things like that can most certainly be fixed, it just may look a little funky since it's located right on the dustcap.
I normally refoam the woofer when that happens but I've did some cheapo repairs with weather stripping adhesive and and a cut out rubber section of a bike innertube (both from walmart).
I just now did it to my $750 PSI platform 3 18 inch subwoofer!!! I Just finished the enclosure, I haven't even listened to it yet and as I am mounting it my drill bit slipped and put a tear in it. It's only a strait line tear not quite what is in this video, but I am still quite devastated!!! It really is as bad of a feeling as at the beginning of your video, super pissed right now!!!
And sooo true! I've done the very same thing myself and kinda made the repairs work on my Kicker C10s and there was never anything really flexible enough!
Top patch really unnecessary I’ve done many subs for others using just black silicone adhesive. Make sure it’s the black silicone because it’s stronger than the clear. When screwing down just pulse the drill because it will give you better control and virtually eliminate that type of mistake.

That drill! Every fan of EXOs biggest fear when watching his builds.
im pissed if i dont see that drill....that thing is famous now
I TOTALLY AGREE!! whats up with all the hate.
What a relatable intro lmao
me this morning installing my new subs 💔
So relatable

Dude... seriously. One of the best videos I've ever seen you edit. Your gonna get famous keep at it.
More famous than you already are I should say..

what was that intro girl you did almost make me cry they should give you an Oscar for this artwork that was so dramatic !!!!! 😐😕
Intro girl?
Thanks for the comment!

Love it. Always try to find a way to fix things before I go full replace. E6000 has been my go to repair glue forever
Heck yeah, man! Glad you're able to fix them up as well :)
@@EXOcontralto I am getting ready to try to recone/re-surround some of my JL subs.
Intro is exactly what I did and why I’m here😭👎🏼 7 years later thank you fam

I just stabbed a Phillips bit right thru the surround of my mid woofer😭

This turned my frown upside down and I fixed my shit!!...Im a new fan brother, from another mother,...maybe!!..you never know!!
Awesome video and what a great product to demo!
Cool to see you guys around here.
Can I use faviquik
The "memories" montage was a nice touch
If you dislike this video your simply going to hell.
I had the same problem once and just used the E6000 on the rip (the black version of E6000) and it worked fine without using a patch.
Y black
Used your patch idea, worked a treat with some RTV silicon. Has made a 10+ year old sub usable again and sounds great, thanks.
Can you make a video about how to fix a broken dust cap?

The intro is fucking amazing
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
💪
I may have teared up a bit in the beginning, but that green band-aid gave me just enough inspiration to let go and move on 😂
I used a small bicycle inner tube
That fits the diameter of it,
Glued up the entire surround
by each strip.

Gomp He did for the vid to help everyone!! Sometimes there's gotta be a sacrifice lol!! Nice exo..

bicycle tube repair patch might do the trick, too, gonna try it out

Thanks so much for this. I bought a used subwoofer only to find a crack in the surround. I put some E6000 and a slice of foam and it works great now!
Way to go man!!!!
This dude is awesome! He got knowledge
@EXO What would you Recommend to Slap Harder with 2 Sundown SA 12's. 4th order box or 6th order box in a 2005 Honda Accord?
I think the tube of a bicycle tire would work better and look better actually
had aw 1200n i patched.. black rtv.. banged another 7 years on it till my brutus 1100.1 killed it . great vid!
Question: what kind of effect on sound will there be if you play a sub that has a hole in the surround? Maybe not as bad as this but mine is a straight line cut across the foam. Will there be an affect on the sound at all if so what??
just fix it, holes on surround basicly removes it's purpose
My go to fix is automotive gasket maker...sticks real good and is flexible...uses it several tomes with great result

lol love it.."newbee" hahaha great vid
I have used just straight silicone with no patch before. Worked flawlessly!
Haha i dig your cheese-e acting! 💙🤘😃 and thanks for helping me fix my sub
I did few patches on a old kevlar pioneer sub, and i did 4-5 coats of black pastidip on the foam to hide the patches. It holds great and looks great.
I agree. Liquid Tape works great too.
How permanently did this work? Or how long, is it still punching?
Will basically last as long as the subwoofer or your chosen glue. They will fail before the repair does, so if you use good glue itll basically last forever

good info in the video but I loved the intro lol I watched it twice and was laughing so dam hard

Hell yeah man, good luck repairing it!

Toothpaste, works as well, make sure its black.
