    I'm placing this comment here too possibly save someone a lot of time maybe. If you have an issue with the device "Not Adopting". Turn off your Anti Virus Software or also your Firewall temporarily and check the software notification for device Adopting. Click it and see if you can now adopt and complete that process. I wasted so much time fumbling with what the hell was wrong until a lot of reading lead me to do that and was later able to complete the process and getting the unit working. Hope this helps someone!

    Thank you so much! This really helped me setup my home network. Since the pandemic we have been working from home and I needed a solid network. I got and Edge-router 10X with a UAP-AC-PRO, I was not sure how to get it up and running but after watching to of your videos, I was up and running in a couple of hours. I was using the PoE on my Edge router but it was not powering the AC-PRO then i noticed it needed 48V and not 24V, beginners mistake!

    You are my hero! I ordered these eero devices that our internet service provider recommended, and they were not working well so I returned them and while futzing with those, I noticed these round disks on the ceiling in the great room and in our gym and had no idea what they were. I thought they had something to do with the smoke detectors/fire sprinklers LOL. I googled the name and found you, thank goodness. Our Audio-visual guy had installed these a few years back before we moved in and I am not versed on these whatsoever but thanks to you and my 12 ft ladder, they are working like a charm. Thank you soooo much! Turns out I never needed the eero devices and had these all along. You rock!!!

    It is worth mentioning that some ports should be open on the PC where "controller" is installed.
    for example 8080 is used for device (e.g. access point) and controller communication. I think it is not possible to adopt the device if the port is closed on the PC where "controller" is installed.

I want to add to my existing wireless network where I use a another router to create the wireless newtorks so I want this unit either to use a wireless uplink and enhance the networks or a wired uplink but still use the same wireless networks as my other two existing ones

    • @ToastyAnswers
      @ToastyAnswers 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm not 100% sure if I understand, but the best option would be to use a wired uplink.
      Are you talking about using two Unifi APs or a Unifi AP with a third-party router/AP? Wired uplinks will always be best, and you can use the same SSID on more than one. With Unifi APs, roaming works very well between same-SSID APs. With third-party devices it still works, but there may be some hiccups. As long as the SSID, password, and network are the same, you shouldn't have much issue.
      Wireless uplinks are generally reserved for when there are no other options. Also, they only function between Unifi devices that support it (you can't wirelessly uplink a Unifi device to a third-party device with the exception of extenders)

    Hi mate happy new year, awesome video by the way i was just wondering once setup is complete is the Unify married to the IP address of the router or can it change without adopting again and going through the whole setup.

    • @ToastyAnswers
      @ToastyAnswers 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It isn't technically married to the IP of the router. It is extending the network so you can change out your router or update the subnet. This would basically be transparent to the APs.
      DHCP will be the real configuration and you will need to make sure that your APs are either set to get their IPs via DHCP or statically configured for the new network/router. If the APs are set for DHCP, then they should grab the new IP address and function as normal without any configuration update.

    • @ToastyAnswers
      @ToastyAnswers 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you!
      It's more or less up to you. You done NEED a USG and switch for everything to function properly, but if you want to take advantage of some of the more advanced features a USG offers then go right ahead. It will not act as a modem, however, so you either need to maintain the ISP's gateway or replace it with a modem supported by your ISP. You'd have to contact the ISP to see what your options are as far as modems go.

    you see the aruba IAP acts as a controller or uses the network. The iap gets its address from network dhcp server and then assigns , via nat, a different address for the wi fi networks you create. So they cannot see any computers on the local lan, different ip or subnet.

    I have a question for you...I run 3 UniFi® HD In-Wall throughout my home and my 4th AP is in my basement which is unfinished and there I run UniFi® AP AC PRO. My in wall units have no problem switching off from unit to unit depending on where we are in the house. When we go into the basement, we rarely switch off to the basement unless I reconnect what ever device is down there (i.e. smart phone). I even have a ring pro chime that is located in the basement but it typical connects to the AP in my kitchen instead of the basement. My question is, do you think my system is not switching off because the basement AP is a different device than the other AP's in my home? If not, do you have a hunch what the issue might be? If not sure, do you know the best place to find an answer? Apparently there is not much customer support on this system via Unifi. TIA

  • @darknespker
    @darknespker 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Thank-You for the video, it helped out a lot. I have a few questions and it would be greatly appreciated if you could advise me.
    General Setup at home currently: I have 3 Apple AirPort Extremes AC - 1 main, 2 bridge (1 is in my room, and the other in my grandparent's apartment next door). The main is hooked up to the Rogers (Canadian ISP) modem. I have disabled all wireless functionality of the modem and solely rely upon my routers. I need 3 because My family and my grandparents live in the adjoining apartment and it made little sense to get them a separate internet service, thus I extend the signal from my apartment.
    I want to get rid of 2 AirPort Extreme's as they are no longer supported and showing their age now, plus I can still sell them.
    Questions:
    1) Would I connect the Access Point to the ethernet port of my main Apple router or my ISPs modem?
    2) Assuming it's to the router, in the end, which Access Point would be best for the signal to traverse two side-by-side apartments? I am thinking between the NanoHD or the UAP-AC-LR?
    3) There will be concrete between some of the walls so I want something that can extend the signal for my entire apartment and a good portion of grandparents. My apartment is 1150-1200sqft, with my grandparents probably being around 850sqft or so.
    Thank-You for taking time to read this.

    • @ToastyAnswers
      @ToastyAnswers 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you!
      1) It depends on if your Modem is bridged or not. You mentioned you have the Wifi shut off and already use your other routers so it sounds like everything has already been set up this way for awhile. It might not be an issue for you, but the proper way to set it up would be to have a single router (gateway). This way you avoid a "double-NAT" situation. If your modem isn't bridged, I would hang everything directly off of it as much as possible. Like I said, it it will work off the other routers just fine but it isn't the right way to do it and you may encounter problems in the future if you start trying to do other customizations to the network.
      2) Your two choices are what I would recommend, but if budget allows I would try to pick up the Nano-HD. From what I understand, the LR has better 2.4Ghz coverage while the Nano-HD has better 5ghz coverage and higher overall throughput (with the right client devices). However, the "long range" designation isn't really going to help with having more signal throughout the apartments. Your devices have to be able to talk back to the AP so you are limited by the client's capabilities, not the AP's. However, I don't think the AP-LR is a bad idea and I'll explain why in #4. Edit: While the Nano-HD is technically better, it is overkill for apartments so I would try to save some money and look at the AP-AC-Lite or LR since they aren't as hard on the wallet.
      3) I wouldn't really try to cover both apartments with a single AP unless you have to. Both units should cover about the same amount of client area. I would think about getting two APs (one for your apartment and another for your grandparents). You can do a "wireless uplink" between the two to extend the signal to the other apartment. The longer range capability actually helps in this situation since both APs can uplink over a bit longer distance.

      @@ToastyAnswers Thank-You so much for your advice. I am trying to get the cleanest set up possible without sacrificing performance. So would that mean that I should turn my Rogers Modem Wi-Fi back on and simply get rid of all three AirPort Extremes? Also, I ended up purchasing the NanoHD as I typically stick with my network devices for quite a while (It's been a little over 5y since I got my first AirPort Extreme AC). So I like to get the best my budget allows for at that time, at least when it comes to networking. The NanoHd will arrive in a few days via Amazon, so I'll let you know how it went and/or possibly ask for further advice.

    • @ToastyAnswers
      @ToastyAnswers 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, you don't need to get rid of the Airport Extremes or even turn your modem's Wifi back on. However, you may only want to run the Airport Extremes in bridged mode (as you said two of them are already running). I'm not really familiar with the Airport devices, so I don't really know how they're normally set up or everything they're capable of. My main point is that you want one single "router". Meaning, one device acting as the gateway to the internet and performing NAT. I'm just assuming that your Rogers modem is routing, and your Airport Base station is also routing (I may be wrong, but that's how I understood it).
      If you look at your modem's interface IPs (for example, Internet = 200.0.0.1, LAN = 192.168.0.1) and compare that to client IPs hanging off the Airport Extreme, you can see if this is the case. If your Airport devices have an IP of 192.168.0.1-254 (matching the modem's LAN IP network) then you're already golden and you don't need to change anything. If your clients on the Airport have anything different from the modem's LAN network (such as 192.168.1.1-254) then you've got two routers. You can either bridge the modem, (if it supports it) bridge the Airport, or just accept that you've got two points of routing and NAT happening. It will still work, but it isn't recommended.
      I hope I explained that correctly, I tend to over-complicate things, especially when there are multiple ways to "fix" it and I don't know exactly how it's set up.
      Good choice on the NanoHD! You should enjoy it pretty well! Let me know how it goes and if you have any more questions!

      Toasty Answers thanks for the reply. My apartment is finally almost done renovation, so I’ll be trying out the access point this weekend and will let you know the results. Thanks a lot for all of your help so far.

      @@ToastyAnswers Hey, I finally tried it out! Apartment renovations took much longer than expected. I turned the Wi-Fi portion of the main AirPort Extreme to off otherwise I was getting 2 different networks. It's been working great. It's very early morning (4:30am currently) so I cannot go to my grandparent's apartment to test the range, but, I believe it will be much better than my AirPort Extreme ever was.
      I do have a question though, with the AirPort Extreme now not doing much of anything in the ways of being a router, couldn't I get rid of it and simply connect to my Rogers Modem instead - that way, I'll have 1 more item to sell and more wires I can get rid of.
      Thanks for all of your help so far. I will update this comment thread in the next day or so after I test its range thoroughly.

    Hi, I have a problem with my U6 LR. If I put on a long cable the AP always blinking (can't adopt) but, If I put on short cable the AP works well. I tried to change the adapter and the results were the same.

    Hi, thank you for the video. I have a TP-link switch with PoE and am trying to manage the Unifi AP on it but unsuccessful. Is there a way to configure the switch or AP?

    • @ToastyAnswers
      @ToastyAnswers 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The AP can only be managed via the controller software. As long as everything is on the same network (and DHCP is enabled) the controller should discover it. Not sure if the switch is a managed model or not, but typically the TP-link devices are unmanaged.

    Hello again, could you please say if I could use PoE in on my Unifi Pro and PPoE lan 4 as a PoE on my edgerouter x without using injector?

      You don't "need" to, but the option is there. Depends on your use-case.

    Thank you for your video! Question: I have my ISP modem with one ethernet port. No home wifi at all. How would I go about setting up my UAC-AC-PRO without an existing WiFi network? Do I have to use a switch to connect laptop, modem and AP on the same network?

    • @ToastyAnswers
      @ToastyAnswers 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You will need a router of some sort off the modem. I assume the modem in question is not capable of routing since it only has a single ethernet port (but I could be wrong).
      You will want the AP and whatever you install the controller on to be on the same network for setup.

    What if my Ethernet connection is pre-wired in a new home ceiling mount ? How would I connect my router (hardwired to my modem, PC, etc.) to the PEO injector ? Recommendations appreciated.

    • @ToastyAnswers
      @ToastyAnswers 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It depends on where your ceiling mount is terminating on the other end. You would want to connect the "LAN" port of the injector to your router and the PoE port to the cable leading to the ceiling mount.

    Thank you for this perfect tutorial. Is there any way to "remove" the controller-exclusive obstacle? Device management from at least 1-3 PCs (Controllers) should be possible in a way!

    • @ToastyAnswers
      @ToastyAnswers 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Unfortunately, there is no way to remove the controller exclusivity. The devices must be tied to a single instance of the controller.
      Device management is possible from any PC via web browser. The controller is also a web server so the network can be managed by any PC that has access to that controller.

      @@ToastyAnswers thanks a lot for your feedback, I really appreciate u took time to answer me 😊.
      I set up that device last summer for a dance school and it’s working perfectly. I just need to remove the wifi time limitation (from 6am-12am) but I’m 400km away atm.
      I do not remember if I did activate the “remote control” option in the settings.
      So I just need to log into ui.com from any PC with my credentials to be able to make adjustments? No need to be in the same network as the device?
      Sincerely, Ziggy
