    This video is awesome. I’m not a “tech” guy and was looking to set up three U6-LR access points. I couldn’t find anything on the internet that had easy directions to set these up - until yours! This really helped me and I have all three set up and working. Thank you!

    Great Video!! A client asked me to install the AP Pro 6 for a guest network off a Comcast cable network in a small restaurant. It seemed like a good fit but I would have to set up a PC for the controller. Going back to Netgear. You saved ma a bunch of time!! Thanks!!

    This is great. I found you after my installer stopped answering my messages. I've only encountered one major-ish problem using this approach: (1) when setting up the UniFi Network on my MacBook, I followed your advice and did not create a UniFi account. Welp, this just backfired on me because UniFi has locked me out of accessing my devices and says I have to reset them in order to regain access. So while, my system is back up and running.. all that hard work I did lives in a vacuum where it cannot be accessed.

    Question: If I have a Security Gateway in the upstream, and an EdgeSwitch which I plug a Unifi Access point to it, how do I create multiple VLANs for different SSIDs? Do I need to do it on the EdgeSwitch, since the AP is connected through it, or do I need to create the VLANs through the controller, then configure them on the EdgeSwitch?

    • @ToastyAnswers
      @ToastyAnswers  ปีที่แล้ว

      You will need to do both. When you configure a VLAN for the Wireless network (on the AP) this will need to be passed all the way up to the gateway.
      For example, if you have two networks which will be passed all the way down to the wireless networks... (Say... Internal (1) (untagged) and Guest (2) (tagged).) Then, this will need to be passed end-to-end.
      In the controller, you will need two networks defined. One for VLAN 1 (untagged) and another for VLAN 2 (tagged). These will need to be tied to each respective wireless network.
      On the Edgeswitch, you will need to make sure the port connecting to the AP is not tagging traffic for VLAN 1, but is tagging traffic for VLAN 2. (PVID = 1, VID = 2).
      You will also need to make sure the uplink to the security gateway is untagged on VLAN 1 and Tagged on VLAN 2.
      Lastly, on the Security Gateway itself, you will need to make sure the uplink port has the network for VLAN 1 assigned as untagged and VLAN 2 assigned to the same port as "tagged". This is the "default gateway" for the network.
      Hopefully this made sense...

    I have 4 APs I put in years ago. I went to check on the configuration and Network Application I had no longer worked with my browser (Firefox on Mac OS 10.15.7). I downloaded the new version (7.3.83) and when it starts up and I "Launch a Browser to Manage the Network", it asks for a "Username" and "Password" and the ones from my previous version don't work. How do I get the Network Application software back to a startup version and re-adopt these from scratch? Or is there a better way to do it?

    My unit refuses to be found for adoption under devices (the screen stays the same, like at 30:40). I've done this process I don't know how many times. I tried adding it to 2 different poe switches, made sure my pc, router and switch was on the same network. These units are new, but I had the exact same issue with the AC LITE. I feel I may have wasted my money getting the unifi 6. I just cannot get this to work. They NEVER SHOW UP. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

    • @ToastyAnswers
      @ToastyAnswers  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Are you able to confirm the AP got an IP address using DHCP? If so, are you able to ping the AP from the computer you installed the controller on?
      Also, do you have anti-virus or firewall enabled on the PC with the controller? Try disabling these and see if they show up. You may need to add an exception to the firewall rules.
      I should have a video coming out shortly that goes over how to do "layer 3 adoption" which also helps when devices are having trouble being discovered locally (I know this doesn't help you right now... sorry).

      These really only operate in roughly a 300ft diameter, but it could be more or less depending on the specific environment. Wireless operation has a ton of variables.
      If you are trying to cover a distance of 1km, I would look at the wireless bridge options such as the Nanostations or Ubiquiti's other bridge options. These are better suited to covering large distances.

    Hi there. Great video! But I have a question: What exactly makes a fresh AP showing in the network console? Is it because the AP and the computer running the Manager software are on the same WiFi or is it because they see each other through being on the same wired network/switch? How exactly do they find each other?

    • @ToastyAnswers
      @ToastyAnswers  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      There's actually a few different mechanisms that allow the fresh APs to show up in the console for adoption. If the AP and Controller are on the same network (same subnet) then discovery will just happen at layer 2 via broadcast.
      If the AP doesn't find a controller on the same network it will attempt to resolve "unifi" as a DNS record. This way, if you have a DNS record configured for your controller, it can find where the controller is located across network boundaries.
      There are other ways such as DHCP Option 43 or just configuring the controller address manually (via SSH). If you have wireless meshing enabled on the controller (and other APs already configured) then the AP may find the controller via another AP without even being a part of the wired network.

    • @ToastyAnswers
      @ToastyAnswers  ปีที่แล้ว

      Check out my optimization video for more information, but you can try to tune the channels and power levels to best suite your environment. However, there are quite a few variables that can come into play here and tuning can sometimes be more of an art than a science.

    Question.
    If i have 1 ap in the gardenhouse and an normal router in my house. How will it switch between both wifi networks? Or can i give them the same ssid name.
    Thankx

    • @ToastyAnswers
      @ToastyAnswers  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      If they have different SSIDs then you will have to manually switch between each wireless network. That is, unless you completely lose signal from one and automatically pick up the other. Typically, as long as you have a usable signal from one wireless network, you will stay connected and not switch to a different SSID.
      You set both networks to have the same SSID and password. This increases your chance of a device automatically connecting to the closer access point. This doesn't always work in practice, but worse case scenario is if your device completely loses connection with the house, it should automatically connect to the the gardenhouse if it is closer.
      There are some caveats to this... but in general this is how it is supposed to work.

    In process of setting this up and have some beginner's questions. There are 3 APs and will use PC as "controller." All 3 APs are wired. Can I use the same name for the network and password as the network name and pw of the main modem/router combo supplied by the ISP? Do the Unifi APs automatically mesh with the ISP's router and allow for seamless roaming while moving from one area of the house to another where the client device grabs the strongest signal automatically? The 3 APs and the ISP modem/router are in different parts of the house and I am hoping to be able to take advantage of the reach of each of the 4 broadcasting signal. Apologies for any dumb questions as my understanding of networking is limited.

    • @ToastyAnswers
      @ToastyAnswers  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You can set the SSID and password to the same as your existing modem/router combo. In theory, the devices should latch onto the closest access-point but this isn't very reliable in practice.
      The modem/router combo will not "mesh" with the Unifi wireless network. Devices will be able to hop between both (since the SSID/PW are the same) but the two networks have no way of sharing client information for roaming purposes (since they're two different manufactures, platforms, etc...). The "roaming" will be entirely up to the client devices which will most likely result in them sticking to one or the other as long as they're in range.
      I've had good luck with setups like this in the past, but I've also had terrible luck. It all depends on your individual setup and a million other factors... but on paper it is supposed to "work".

    • @ToastyAnswers
      @ToastyAnswers  ปีที่แล้ว

      If you are using Cat5(e) ethernet cable to connect your AP to your router/modem then the maximum distance is going to be 330 ft (100m). This is a physical limitation of the medium and while it may "work" at distances greater than this, it is not recommended or reliable to do so.

    Thanks for the video. My question goes thus, why is my UDM Pro failing to adopt my devices (such as switches and APs)?

    • @ToastyAnswers
      @ToastyAnswers  ปีที่แล้ว

      Typically, when I see this happen, it is because the devices are on a different network than the controller and do not have the "Inform-address" configured correctly. Also, if the devices are not getting IPs via DHCP, then they can "fall-back" to the default IP of 192.168.1.20. If all of them are connected at the same time and fall-back to this IP, there will be problems.
      I would first make sure the devices are getting the proper IP and that it is on the same subnet as the UDM Pro. Second, I would try adopting the devices one at a time. There can be some other reasons for adoption failure, but those are the most common.

    • @ToastyAnswers
      @ToastyAnswers  ปีที่แล้ว

      You should select the latest version of Java you downloaded to open the program. The latest versions of Unifi controller use a different version of Java than all the previous editions. This usually causes some issue with launching since most people have the previous edition installed and then have to upgrade to the new Java 11 to run newer controllers. My recommendation is to un-install the older version of Java if you don't have any other programs dependent on it. Otherwise, you will need to manually select the newer Java runtime.

    So, Question! I have my unifi 24 POE+ 2.5 Switch, I have 4 AP AC Pro units, once I set up the two networks House and Guest on every AP and everything is all plugged in. How do I set up preference on which endpoint will connect to each AP, will it do it by proximity? or how does it normally work. I just don't want the TV all the way to the corner to be connected to the AP that is the fartest away.

    • @ToastyAnswers
      @ToastyAnswers  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      In theory, it is by proximity. However, there are a ton of factors that will determine how well this works in practice (device type, supported protocols, network-specific configurations, etc... . If the two APs are too close to each other, you may have a difficult time getting clients to connect to the nearest AP and not "stick" to one that is further.
      Since the TV doesn't move it will probably stick to the nearest AP "better" than other devices, however, if the nearest AP reboots it could connect to the further AP and decide to remain there. There are things you can do to try and solve this issue, but it can get quite involved.

    Can these APs be managed from a different network that the APs are on ? For example, I bring these APs up in a specific VLAN for management, however, I want to have the management software installed on a VM on my server VLAN which is a different network secured via a firewall, is that possible to still manage these devices?

    • @ToastyAnswers

      Yes, this is very possible and recommended. When you define your "Networks" just create an additional one for Management. Then, you can assign that network as the "Management Network" under each AP (I believe there is also a global setting for this, but I'm not sure off the top of my head).

      @ToastyAnswers  ปีที่แล้ว

      This should be a part of a future video, but really all you need to do is adopt multiple access-points following the same procedure. By default, all APs you adopt will receive the same SSIDs you have configured in the controller so adding multiple for the same SSID is as simple as adopting more than one.
      You can limit the assignment of SSIDs through AP groups and certain models have a maximum SSID count per device. Hope this helps.

    I plugged a new one into ethernet cable that is coming out of a switch. Its POE so should be getting power. But literally nothing happens.
    Is there a button that i need to press or once plugged into something the light should just appear?

    • @ToastyAnswers
      @ToastyAnswers  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      There isn't a button you need to press. The AP should start lighting up when it is plugged in as long as the PoE version is supported. This depends on the version of PoE supported by the AP as well as the version supported by the switch.

    How do I integrate it into my Deco mesh setup? Can I just plug it into my Deco unit instead of my router?

    • @ToastyAnswers
      @ToastyAnswers  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't have any experience with the Deco mesh system. If it allows wired connections, you should be able to plug it in (most likely using an injector) and have it work normally. However, it will not tie in to the mesh system and will operate independently of that system.

    Great video Sir. How I reset the AP from the network controller pc software, without press the reset button at AP, thanks

    • @ToastyAnswers
      @ToastyAnswers  ปีที่แล้ว

      If you navigate to the device in the controller there is an option to "Forget" the device. This removes it from the controller and automatically resets the device to factory defaults. I believe it is under the device maintenance tab... it's changed places a couple of times throughout the years.

    Hi, I have a question. I have a WiFi modem, from that modem cable goes to the AP via its adapter. Referring to your WiFi setup screen @ 14.25 video, should that be the same as wifi name and password from my modem, or can I pick something completely different here?

    • @ToastyAnswers
      @ToastyAnswers  ปีที่แล้ว

      You can pick something completely different if you would like. It's really a personal preference as well as a trade-off.
      If you choose the same SSID and Password as your modem, you shouldn't have to manually switch networks. Your devices should connect to either/or as long as they're in range. The downside is that while it should work like this in theory, you sometimes get devices hanging onto a single AP even when the signal is unusable or flat out refusing to connect to the other access-point.
      If you choose a completely different SSID and Password you will have to manually choose the wireless network you want to connect to. Of course, if both are saved on the device and you run entirely out of range of one... your devices should connect to the other (as long as you have the automatically connect option selected for both wireless networks).

    I added an unifi AP to a 3rd party router, do I choose NO DHCP or DHCP Relay ?

    • @ToastyAnswers
      @ToastyAnswers  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When using these with a third-party router, those settings don't do anything. It really doesn't matter what you select because they won't be applied if you don't have a Unifi gateway device.
      Keep in mind that whatever settings you select will be applied to a Unifi gateway device should you ever install one.

    Could you remove the controller once the network is set up?

    • @ToastyAnswers
      @ToastyAnswers  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, once the network has been setup you can remove the controller without issue. However, since the devices are tied to the original instance of the software, you will need to erase and re-adopt/configure the devices if you install a new controller from scratch. Unless you took a backup of the original controller or boot up the same instance.... this is only if you need to make changes in the future.

    When I was setting my access points up about four years ago I had always read to never set the radio power auto and the channel to auto. Has that functionality been improved over the last few years?

    • @ToastyAnswers
      @ToastyAnswers  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I feel like it's gotten a bit better. Recently, I've set more deployments to use only auto and I haven't had the nightmares I've had in the past. It definitely works better with smaller deployments though. I will still manually tune the radios if there are a good number of APs or if they're in a crowded area.

      Any switch which supports the same PoE spec as the access point will work. My two examples are Cisco SG-350 and TP-Link JetStream 8-Port. PoE is a universal standard and as long as the switch supports that standard then it will work.

    It seems like once you have set up the AP using the console software, the phone App is completely useless. Right? I just went through setting up an AP lite for the first time, and this video helped a lot, mostly to give me confidence that this would all work the way I wanted.

    • @ToastyAnswers

    Hi Toasty. Me again. It's been two weeks of plugging away and I thought I had it sorted out BUT if I interrupt either internet OR power, the APs go offline and report "adoption failed".
    Controlled via Win 10 PC 2 older UAPs (M/N UAP) powered by POE wall adapters.
    After power or internet interruption APs get stuck at "adoption failed"
    Tried with DHCP and also with both static IPs set outside the DHCP range of the ISP router
    Tried Uplink Connectivity Monitor and SSH authentication disabled or enabled.
    Only a factory reset gets them up and running again
    These MIGHT have been working properly before ISP switched router, bypassing the Edge Max POE 5 router and owner isn't inclined to invest in new equipment since ISP provides one free wifi extender and aftermarket extenders aren't too expensive. When these first fell into my hands, a firmware was suggested and I accepted. (Bad idea?)
    There is one other UAP at the home that I assume hasn't been updated but I have no idea what controls it or how to see its Firmware version. If I unplug the ethernet cable, that one unit comes right back on line and since our area is prone to power and internet outages, I assume that one unit is coming back online unassisted.
    I realize these are outdated units so more of intellectual curiosity. Any suggestions much appreciated as Ubiquiti suggests just go buy new.

    • @ToastyAnswers
      @ToastyAnswers  ปีที่แล้ว

      Basically, the exact same. Once the controller is up and running you can adopt the rest of the APs in the same manner as the first (as long as they can communicate with the controller). The wireless settings are pushed to all the APs unless you setup specific AP groups.

Now I want to do that same for another business. I have taken a back up of the new set up and now I want to do a "file new" for another totally separate config. Do I need to remove the controller form my computer and reinstall or is there a simple new config option someplace or somehow? THANK YOU!!!

    Hi Toasty, Wow this is super educational and probably a bit over my head BUT my installer has gone missing 3 years after the initial config and i'd rather own the management anyway. the PW changed on my Arris Modem Router and the AP's went to PW error so non working in a stand alone bldg and in the main home. - they were never labeled as AP1, or 2 etc.
    I was thinking of following your video to reset my 2 UAP AC LR AP's back to factory then set up first as standalone via mobile app, then in the console (which I would download to a desktop) make it into one ssid and PW as you said in your past comments. All this plugged into an existing and broadcasting Arris modem/router that already has a SSID/PW - would these all just share the same SSID/PW for a room to room AP transition or does the two AP's just need to share a new SSID/PW that is already connected to the main router switch? thanks for any tips - can't get too much worse with it coverage being out. Thanks for this education... I will watch this a few more times but appreciate the time it took you to tell us this .
