    I still don't get why you would use mesh over standard APs. If you need to run a network cable up to it for power anyway, why not just continue that wire to the network closet and run APs? Serious question.

      There are many use cases for this - just one example - imagine a college campus/square/common area. Huge area, outdoors...nice landscaping and concrete walkways. They have power all throughout - lights and what-not, but no network. Easier to throw up a wireless mesh network and use the PoE injector to supply power from the closest power outlet? Or trench CAT5e/CAT6 where you need it?
      Another example - campgrounds.
      In most cases - I agree with you...but mesh definitely has its use cases.

      Mesh is great for increasing coverage areas. You shouldn't expect this to work right with many units and a single feed setup. There is often times where even the best planning still ends up with dead areas for one reason or another. You can add mesh feeds at such locations and then use the "repeaters" for increasing coverage without having to worry about piping data elsewhere. If someone has a large install plan and are only feeding it via 1 or 2 wired network connections, they'll end up creating a headache for themselves. Mesh is not a substitute for having multiple ethernet runs into the wireless network.

      If i understand correctly, another advantage of Mesh is the handoff as a device moves from one connection "point" to the next. I think Mesh makes the transition seamless, no interruption. Is that right, Chris?

    This is the first Ubiquiti product video I’ve seen that actually breaks down the technology and thoroughly explains the application and deployment. I’m considering a similar deployment and this video explained everything in great detail, particularly the uplink feature which explains how these devices connect to each other wirelessly. Well done!

    I have both. They work great!!! I have the Pro running as the main, and the smaller one connected wirelessly. It covers a large area where there is a lot of interference. They're definitely worth every penny.
    My old router couldn't smash through the interference but having a pair of these gets the job done.

    Did you know after you have a wired one adopted you can adopt the others without them being connected on the LAN? They adopt via wireless uplink. Pretty cool.

    An upside to wiring in these mesh access points is that they are outdoor access points that are 802.11ac. They are less expensive than Ubiquiti's old outdoor and outdoor AC. So if you don't need "mesh" but want rainproof these are a great choice.

    The variation in speed tests taken over wireless to your laptop may be due to orientation of the laptop antenna. Try testing with the laptop and then again oriented 90 degrees (ie: screenback to access point versus side to the AP) to see what changes.

    My first impression of Mesh when I read about it the throughput would be consistent, so no less speed than what regular signal loss would impose - but I guess I was wrong given each hop severely cut the bandwidth.

    There is a reason for seeing the slower speeds with iperf when plugging in hardwired vs wired and its primarily latency. I've seen this firsthand with adapters that don't offer as low latency as traditional ethernet. A good gauge will be your ping time, even 1-2ms will be enough to introduce enough latency to slow things down vs hardwire. The solution fortunately is rather simple. You will notice that if you can increase your network adapters TCP send/receive buffer size your iperf performance should increase significantly. To do this with Windows can be a bit tricky, but an OS such as Linux make it rather simple.

    Nice video! Keep in mind the UAP-AC-M is a dual band device 2.4/5.8 so if you install a new antenna you need to use a dual band antenna. If you use a 5.8 antenna you will lose 2.4 coverage.

    Hey! This video has been so helpful, and I truly thank you for that. I have set up a Unify Access Point system, using 1 uap-ac-pro, and 2 uap-ac-m-mesh devices. We successfully set them up using the guidance from this video, and they were working fine. Now, they continuously drop connection and cannot stay connected for more than a few hours. What do you do to reconnect the system while not starting from scratch all over again every time they become disconnected? Also, this product must be more dependable then we are experiencing it, so we are probably doing something wrong or not programming them correctly. Your help would be amazing!! (Also good material for a new video?) Thanks!

    Hi I loved the video and you do a great job explaining. I have a few questions that you or someone else might help answer.
    At this moment, I have a modem Motorola SB6183 and a NETGEAR Nighthawk X6 AC3200 Tri-Band Gigabit. I have experienced significant slower wifi during the last few months. I do have about 14 devices using Wifi. I will be moving in a house that is about 40 feet apart from the house i am living right now (that house is in the back part of the front house)
    The questions that I have are:
    1. Is having a mesh a viable option? is it worth it? can you connect them via wifi to each other?
    or
    2. is having Unifi AP a better solution? can you connect them via wifi to each other?
    3. If I set up an AP as repeater, will i lose speed?

    Question. I have a project i'm working on at my office. I have a tower next to my main office not being used so I want to utilize the tower and have wifi around my shipyard. The main reason for doing this is I need to put security cameras on the dock that is on the other side of the levee. I cant get any cable on the other side at all. So the question is will this work with the longest range I need to place a camera 550 feet away? Like I said I have a huge tower next to the main building not being used at all. I would say its about 40 foot tall. So I would have clear view to all the wireless cameras. If you think something else would be better for my situation please any help would be appreciated.

      You've better use an OMNI directional antenna with rocket m5/ac radio, it depends on quantity of cameras and on each camera it will connect to the AP using ubiquiti NANO BEAM M5/AC. (should be with line of sight)
      note: built-in wireless camera is for in door use only and in small area coverage with 50 meters range without obstruction or blocking object.

    Multiple WiFi repeaters that I've looked at only support WEP when repeating the signal. So the mesh models are definitely an improvement for security.

    even for a big house and yard there are pretty good AP`s who have power enough to fully cover the area, simple 1 device on a clever place , lot cheaper and prob less access times than a repeaters path.

    I am using the mesh feature of Unifi products for few years already in few beach resorts I look after. It is the cheapest way for me to cover large resort area without laying cables all over the property, which is not even very possible. I was excited when they released this new Unifi Mesh and was super excited that It will bring something new comparing with other previous Unifi products. Unfortunately it seems to me that it can do exact same things as I was able to do with all UAP (outdoor, PRO, LR, etc.) and Pico Station with flashed firmware. It is disappointing for me that there is not any new feature, or is it?

    Would the UAP-AC-M reconnect to the UAP-AC-M-PRO (preferred uplink) as soon as it comes back online after being unplugged or is a restart required?

      Great question - I was unable to get the UAP-AC-M to automatically re-connect to the UAP-AC-M-PRO when it came back online. Each time I had to manually set it as the wireless uplink again.

    I put one of these on the front of my house for the front yard. I am also looking at putting something in the backyard. However, that would put my standard AP pro, and two mesh APs very close together. They wouldnt use the mesh feature because they would be wired. I am purely using the mesh because it cost about the same as an AC lite and it is outdoor rated. My question is could I put one on say my toolshead in the backyard to extend range and use the network port not only for power but to provide connectivity to a switch? Thanks.

      you can assign a Vlan with ID, just set one up today. I don't have any Vlans setup on this network. But I saw the spot where you put in the Vlan ID.

      These will work off of whatever settings you have in UniFi for your wireless network. Just check out any of the other videos I have done where I set up SSID's and/or guest networks in UniFi.

    Can the secondary LAN port be plugged into a small Unifi PoE switch to extend to another UAP-AC-M-PRO AC Mesh and send POE power to it (No power, or Lan 180 feet away) Would this be possible? there is power and lan at the 1st UAP-AC-M-PRO AC Mesh location and I can not MESH as No power and 2nd location

    Do vlans and multiple ssids go across the mesh if I were to plug into a remote radio?

    Have you tested the G3 cameras with these mesh units? I have a client that needs to deploy a wireless security system in a downtown area where cable is impossible to run. I'm thinking mesh for backup reliability, but maybe standard APs are better? Each camera would have it's own uap-ac-m with a series of uap-ac-m-pro devices to bounce it around the building on different blocks

    So when or if the AP-AC-M-Pro comes back online, then does the other mesh AP reconnect back to its original wireless uplink?

    Chris, in your experience working with the Ubiquity Mesh units, how many unites were you able to integrate. Somewhere i had read ubiquity will top out at 4 unites. one wired and 3 connected wireless. I was wondering if that was the same for lower scale models.

    1- What is the actual distance that this AP reaches in an open field, like a stadium where a musical happens?
    2- How many connected clients simultaneously are recommended to the maximum by AP?
    I ask why the manufacturer's specifications do not seem to be real (120 Clients / 183 Meters).

    AHAH! I see the problem. I adopted a mesh stick into Unifi, but it was isolated after I disconnected its Ethernet link from the rest of the LAN. It wasn't until I looked at another TH-cam video that I understood that the *default* is not to have any Wireless Uplinks. A request: perhaps the video (at 13:01, for example) could have a comment that you already set the uplink to the top one. I might have twigged to this and avoided some frustration... But this is still a very clear video that shows how cool this Ubiquiti stuff really is. Thanks again.

    Question. If I have 2 AC/HD/XG wired. Then 2 "clouds" of Mesh devices. If then 1 of the wired AC/HD/XG goes down, will the "lost" mesh-cloud reconnect to AC/HD/XG still up? (provided it can be seen ofc) The goal is to distribute the users over 2 wired connections with failover. This will ofc happen if pure Mesh devices is used, but what about with 2 AC/HD/XG devices?

    Great video! Does Unifi's mesh solution support fast switching between access points?
    If possible for a future video I would love to see fast switching and how to configure it. I think that's the holy grail of home networking.

      Well - these AP's will follow whatever rules you have set up in UniFi. Unfortunately though, the band steering and zero-handoff roaming isn't perfect yet.

    Can i create a wireless uplink between a Unifi Ap-AC-MESH and a Unifi AP-AC-Outdoor. My radio is ok and i only see my Unifi AP-AC-LR but not the Outdoor. My outdoor is closer than the LR.
