ARGH Following the same play victim book as Grimes. He is a murderer. Keep him in prison. Another embarrassment to the US. Stop crying about his kids. He fell asleep driving, now wants to cry medical accident. It's BS negligence.

Why do you report this terrible accident as if this navy man is a victim? He is not, 2 Japanese lives are. Hope US justice system functions properly and he gets severely punished.

So, who cares about the two other people that he killed and for their families. He needs to serve the rest of his sentence in US custody. If he doesn't, Japan will stop sending prisoners back to the US to serve the rest of their time in US custody.

Agree, and should NOT have been climbing Mt. Fuji in 2021 during COVID restrictions

@@AlonzoCalPolyPomona Maybe you're right. I favor safety. But if you're deep in a pandemic, have testing and quarantine measures for international arrivals in place, and very high mask use in more crowded areas, seems like hiking in the mountains in and of itself isn't such a bad thing, if you're already in the country anyway and have tested negative. Still, it does seem he and his supporters are flippant about his negligence.

His lawyer claims it was just an unfortunate accident. However, even if it was an unfortunate accident, a three-year prison sentence for killing two people is short. Also, I can understand the attorney's feelings if it was a work-related accident, but this was an accident that happened in his personal life.

Literally if dude committed vehicular manslaughter in one of the states he’d receive a very similar punishment if not severer but now it seems he gets a pass

This occured in 2021, under COVID restriction. He should NOT have been climbing Mt. Fiji at that time.

The US news never release the full court content I wonder why. But in short, he admitted that he felt sick for a while before the accident and could have stopped driving but he didn’t. He also plead guilty. Which resulted in a lower sentence.

I’m Japanese and I like Americans, but this is not good. She is a shame of US. Imagine a reckless Japanese driver kills two innocent pedestrians in the US and his wife acts like a victim of US legal system. What a joke.

Ridge, a while ago, I don't appreciate taking your watch in aft steering because you felt like sleeping-in, meanwhile I had fewer hours of sleep. Also, when you brought your family on family day, I don't appreciate how you threatened me when your kid nearly ran into me from behind, you then started talking about "beating my azz" for no apparent reason. This was near the T.V., inside the enlisted galley, maybe your wife remembers, she was sitting a few feet away. I hope you get every bit of justice you deserve, you were something else then. Clearly that has not changed. You know who I am.

Yea, sounds like an extremely severe punishment, for negligent driving. Maybe there's something wrong with him in the hospital after they transferred him back to the united states'? Usually a negligence driving ticket is pay a fine and insurance might go up . I think they are punishing this fellow beyond epic proportions. Unless he did something else in japan, then just fine him and that's it. What's the mystery unsolved of his story?

Sad, for both the Navy Officer and the people who died. When I was stationed in Japan in the Army, a Japanese driver hit another car and killed a 22 year old soldier in the car. No jail time was done by the party at fault.

Negligent driving resulting in death and injury results in a fine or suspended prison sentence for a first offense except in cases where the damage is severe.
In his case, it is believed that he was sentenced to prison because he murdered two people.
In addition, the location where his accident occurred was at an altitude of 300m to 400m, so it is unlikely that he really suffered from altitude sickness, and even if he did suffer from altitude sickness, the fact that he continued to drive in that condition is problematic.

It's shameful the way the military has treated this officer. This was an accident while he was working for Japan, our ally. He paid $1.6 million of his personal money to the Japanese family, has been imprisoned, and now the Navy strips him of his rank and benefits and discharges him, while he is still locked up. Is it any wonder America can't find new recruits?
