  • Navy officer Lt. Ridge Alkonis was jailed in Japan over a deadly car crash and is now in United States custody. He had been serving a three-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to the negligent driving deaths of an elderly woman and her son-in-law in May 2021. While he argued he suffered from loss of consciousness due to the altitude, the Japanese court found him to be negligent. Brittany Alkonis, the officer's wife, joins "NewsNation Prime" with the latest on her husband's case, urging President Joe Biden to commute his sentence.

It is not crazy! Diplomats and their immediate families have 100% immunity in a country they are officially deployed to. The main idea behind is that Diplmats wouldn’t be charged for sham political charges, or used as bargaining chips in prison swap talks when two countries relationship sour. It is very tragic what happened to the teenage boy in the UK, but we need to uphold to this long tradition of Diplomatic immunity!

It seems like the wife changed her story. According to the US Navy accident report, she told naval officers that both she and her husband fell asleep and woke up during the crash, after which her husband tried to help the accident victims. Her husband also told Japanese police he was drowsy before the crash. There's no evidence that either had altitude sickness or a "medical episode." They were at 1,000ft elevation by the time of the accident and altitude sickness doesn't cause someone to suddenly pass out. The two doctors, neither experts in altitude sickness, who diagnosed the husband with the sickness only saw him a month or more after the crash and both the US Navy and court rejected their findings. In any case, the couple was negligent and should have pulled over and rested until they could drive home safely.

It is doubtful that they "climbed Mt. Fuji" in the first place.
Mt. Fuji is prohibited from climbing in May, when the accident occurred, and it is impossible to climb high enough to get altitude sickness.
The ban on climbing Mt. Fuji will be lifted from July.
Mt. Fuji is off-limits until the lifting of the climbing ban is lifted.
Just sightseeing around Mt. Fuji will not cause altitude sickness.
The American media does not understand what can be found by doing a little research on tourist information.

In Japan, Americans driving on a SOFA license in their country is an agreement to honor their traffic laws & assume responsibility of our actions as a professional driver (yeah, they treat us as professional drivers even though some of us suck at it), that's how they see it when accidents occur. So, as a professional driver even allowing your vehicle to break down is considered your fault & responsibility to upkeep your vehicle in a proper running state. I guarantee she had a SOFA license too as a spouse & the Japanese govt could have easily seen it as he should have allowed her to drive instead if he was feeling ill. Everyone gets the class & briefs when they take the local test & gets their SOFA license so it should be no surprise that you're probably at fault in any accident unless you can adequately prove to them that you're not. Their country, their rules.

She seems to think that with the transfer to the US prison, that he'd just magically get off. Regardless of the fairness of the verdict in Japan, Japan doesn't agree to let American prisoners transfer to the US penal system just for the US to let them out. There's no argument here; it's just that she's not getting her way, so "it's not fair." And it seems that she's blaming Biden for it, as if the POTUS oversees all military criminal cases! If he was confined since the accident in May 2021, then there shouldn't be much longer to go for his 3 year sentence. The people who died as a result of his driving got a death sentence, and their families got a life sentence. Instead of being happy that the USA got him back home so that he's near family and friends, etc., she's unhappy that she doesn't get everything.

I'm disappointed that many of the members in the church, who claim to be Alkonis' friends are calling for his release while showing 0 remorse to the victims. Most of the people "foresees" altitude sickness when they go on high altitude. Even when I go to Sundance or Snowbird, I feel it. The elevation of Go-go-me of Mt Fuji is about the one in Park City, so how would I believe them who had lived in Utah before, arguing that mountain sickness was "unforeseeable", showing 0 remorse to the victims, and for some reason make Japan look bad?

In the 1990s, an elementary school girl was raped in Okinawa, and the perpetrators were three American soldiers stationed in Japan.
The Japanese police were unable to do anything as the three perpetrators fled into the base.
The Japanese people at the time were furious, and demonstrations and rallies were held in Okinawa to protest against the Japanese and American governments, calling for the termination of the Japan-US Status of Forces Agreement.
As a result, a small number of requests were granted, but the Japan-U.S. Status of Forces Agreement is still far from equal.
Like this time, Japan still has to succumb to unjust pressure from the American government.

I’m assuming they mean Altitude Sickness but usually as you come back down the mountain or the unpressurized aircraft comes down in altitude the symptoms lessen and you are unlikely to go from awake alert and driving to suddenly be unconscious when you are in a car descending from the mountain. Also just passing out like that from Altitude Sickness is abnormal as usually you are dizzy light headed sick to your stomach vomiting and eventually pass out if you don’t descend. I’m not saying he didn’t have some kind of episode but what is being said happened isn’t what usually happens from Altitude Sickness when you are in fact descending and quite possibly that’s why they didn’t believe he had a medical episode.
As far as the SOFA or Status of Forces Agreement goes, every country pretty much has their own stipulations beyond the boiler plate language of the standard agreement and it is the responsibility of the Service Member to abide by the rules and laws set out by that Host Country and if the Service Member has Dependents in Country then they are responsible to ensure the Dependents follow those rules and laws as well.

Considering this incident as well, the Japanese people have been saddened many times by the unequal Japan-U.S. Status of Forces Agreement due to past crimes and traffic accidents committed by U.S. soldiers stationed in Japan.
Does the American government and people want to instill anti-American consciousness among the Japanese people?
At least two people lost their lives this time.
If I caused a similar accident and killed an American citizen, would the victims and their families forgive me?
Is it okay for the American government to allow me to return to Japan like this time?
Please stop imposing American rules on Japan and the rest of the world.
It is America's arrogant attitude that is causing anti-American sentiment to take root in the world and increasing the number of new terrorists.
America should have an equal alliance and treaty with Japan.
