My brother and I would sit and sing the songs for days on end. Unfortunately, I lost my brother in 1992 to cancer and these songs remind me of him. "I LOVE YOU BILL!!!"

I've tried at times to find out what happened to Lone Justice and Maria McKee. All I could find was that she was here or there doing this or that. She was incredibly talented. Maybe the fact that she was so good at so many genres and that her career was mismanaged explains why she wasn't a bigger artist than she was.

Lone Justus, 1986, I think, in a basement bar in Long Beach, Ca. First and only time I ever saw Shane Fontayne. 12-foot ceilings with about 100 people, no chairs. Maria and Shane, wow. I howled and danced all night long. I haven't found any videos that show the way he looked, played, or moved at that time. Shane would put his knees together and do a deep dip over and over right in the middle of the solo. Pure Rock and Roll and they did Sweet Jane for an encore. I have to admit I've always had a bit of a man crush on Shane.

Where has this been hiding all these years? I can't believe it took till 2023 for me to discover this wonderful band. Having learned a little about her story, the words and feeling of this song make sense. She bounded onto the scene aged 18 with this incredible talent and energy, but despite all the backing and the opportunities, somehow it just hadn't worked out for her. This song dampens that talent and energy with disillusionment and sadness.
We all know how it feels, when life and age start to tear away at youthful hope, when faced with disappointment, all we're left with is love.
Maria McKee has that rare skill to bear her heart and soul on stage. And here her disillusion is cast open for the world to see and feel:
"you gave it all up for a dream
Fate proved unkind, to lock the door and leave no key
You're unsure, well baby, I'm scared, too
    When the world crushes you"

This song came about right about the time I broke up with my fiancée. I would go into my favorite bar in Old Town, Alexandria on a Friday evening after work and ask the soloist to play it. By the third or fourth Friday, she played it as soon as she saw me walk in. God I miss those days to be 25 again, with a career and life in all its fullness ahead of me! :-) I do have to wonder what the soloist must have thought of the guy who came in every Friday at closing time in a double-breasted suit and overcoat who sat down, drank one bourbon, made a single request and left. Guess she thought I was a nut case.

Maria McKee defines what TRUE musical talent is all about! Lone Justice has always been a fantastically amazing band lead by her incredibly powerful singing voice, but the only drawback is that they have always been too underrated. They shouldn't have been! Anybody in their own right mind would know that Lone Justice is the perfectly distinctive style of Cowpunk pop rock which ultimately defined eighties talent! Their style of music for that decade was truly one of a kind!
    Lone Justice is legendary!!

    Shelter_ Lyrics
Well alright, you gave it all up for a dream
Fate proved unkind, to lock the door and leave no key
You're unsure, well baby I'm scared too
    When the world crushes you
Let me be your shelter, shelter
    From a storm outside
Let me be your shelter, shelter
    From the endless night
Disillusion has an edge so sharp
It tears at your soul and leaves a stain upon your heart
I need you, to wash mine clean
You've felt it too, and you need me
Let me be your shelter, shelter
    From a storm outside
Let me be your shelter, shelter
    From the endless night
Your struggle with darkness has left you blind
I'll light the fire in your eyes
Your struggle with darkness has left you blind
I'll light the fire in your eyes
Let me be your shelter, shelter

There's no way that could NOT be a best concert! Sure wish I'd seen that one! Over the years, I've kept missing opportunities to see U2 (mostly because of work, sometimes money was an issue, etc.), but I finally saw them on the 30th anniversary of the Joshua Tree album release, and they performed the entire album (along with several tracks from the early days)! Most of us, I am sure, have a very few songs that we consider the audio equivalent of a hug from a friend...the sort of song that can be counted on to soothe, reassure, or console as needed. Maria is heavenly for sure! Mr. Make Believe says it best. Whoever was lucky enough to stumble upon Lone Justice before "Shelter" was just that...lucky. Because of controlled radio airplay and stupid exec's from the music industry, bands like LJ and many more like them just did not get promoted properly and therefore, many folks missed out. Now with TH-cam, they'll find new fans hopefully! Go Maria ~ Love your music and talent and will listen forever! Katz
