Wow, that ending on “what you should buy” is one of the best sections I’ve ever seen in an LMG video ever. That was incredibly detailed but really focused. Great stuff!
Yeah that's great because I had heard about this new model a week or two ago I don't know where, and how it was such a bang for the buck, but I thought that Sony probably had better options out there. Since I'm not a professional but I really appreciate photography as an activity on my trips and other important moments, I want the best product at the lowest cost, especially since in photo, you get drowned with additional purchases like lenses, batteries, and other stuff. So it's important to know the other options out there!
You can tell this review is being done by someone who REALLY knows what they're talking about and has plenty of experience with the entire product category and all the competition in the segment. That's an issue I've always had with LMG in certain product categories, like laptops. They only care about high end 13" thin and lights and compare everything to that. Some of us actually prefer bigger screen laptops with a bit more power and battery life. Brandon also knows his shit when it comes to cameras but I feel like he lacks the confidence to really tell people what's good for them. He mostly just sticks to the facts.
At $2200, the overheating issues are going to leave this camera dead in the water for most vloggers, unless they only film in the winter and live in Canada/Finland/Norway/etc.
@@leonardw5487 The issue is the cool down time. Even if you go for 24fps, you're still only getting 1 legitimate record session in, because like David said, after he stopped recording, let it sit for a minute, then tried filming again, the record time was almost non-existent for the 2nd recording session. That's a huge risk to take buying this camera and hoping that you don't need to do 2 extended recordings in somewhat quick succession. That makes it basically unusable at any "event" where things are happening constantly.
@@leonardw5487 This camera will overheat in 24/30p as well. The real bottleneck is the bitrate. You'll have to shoot 8-bit 4:2:0 for longer recording times. Also Dan Watson got the camera to overheat while just menu browsing. The tiny body just has terrible thermal management.
Soft Skin Effect is NOT an AI feature. It uses face detection used for autofocus to track your face and blurs out the contrasting details on your skin. Does not affect lighting nor does it look good on everyone, yet is toggled on by default.
Yeah, I was thinking this was a clear winner, but when I saw the price, there are a lot of competitive options. Better in some ways, worse than others. A weakness for the Sony is a lack of good, affordable compact lenses with fast aperatures compared to some other systems. Nikon Z doesn't have the best cameras, but lenses like the little 40mm 1.8 full frame prime sure make it appealing if you haven't bought into another system.
That was a great video. ZV-E1 looks very tempting... but one point that needs to be mentioned is that once you add a decent full frame lens onto it, the size + weight has just gone way up. Camera newbies need to be aware of that before they jump into the expensive (and heavy) world of full frame.
14:54 little correction here: yes in theory not having a mechanical shutter does degrade image quality a bit. However, this sensor reads out so quickly that i never had any problems with rolling shutter, and the theoretical loss in dynamic range is also absolutely not noticeable. I mainly use my a7sIII for photography (i'm weird, i know) and i always shoot in silent mode and the results are amazing. Oh and 12mp are totally enough for 95% of usecases imo.
little correction for you guys : at 2:01, you're talking about a ZV-E10 but actually show an A7IV on screen. And at 2:25, you catpion "A7IV camera" but David is actually holding a ZV-E10 Basically, the ZV-E1 is a super powerful camera, and you can look at it several ways: it's an A7S3 with all the photographic features removed (no mechanical shutter, no EVF, no large grip, limited controls). If you were using the A7S3 for video only and you're not bothered by the record times, ZV-E1 is pretty much the same thing, just cheaper. However, I know a few people that work with A7S3s and those people are fine with 12MP images when they're taking pictures, it's actually perfect for photojournalism and the A7S3 ends up being a workhorse for modern journalists that don't need much of a super high res picture (12Mp is more than enough for web / newspaper use), but they actually need good video specs it's an FX3 with the fan removed, and with simplified controls. Basically, if you aren't bothered by the record times, it could be alright, but there is no doubt the FX 3 runs longer, has backup recording, better interface (full size HDMI, better RAW support) and is easier to rig. Not really gonna mention the FX6, if you were looking at an FX6 you're most likely not interested at the ZV-E1 If you are looking for a decent cinema like camera for about 2k USD, you can either go with the ZV-E1, or go with the pretty new as well FX30, which is basically the FX3 with a smaller APS-C sensor, not only being more versatile on the photo side (if needed), but also having all the nice features that the FX3 body offers. Also! On the subject of the S5II, the autofocus is pretty good, almost as good as teh A7IV in video now that they use phase detect autofocus. It was however pretty bad ont eh original Lumix S5 (which was basically the same thing just without PDAF) Imho, if you're looking as Sony and you want a serious video camera, the big question is between the FX30 and the ZV-E1. David mentionned that you can shoot in crop mode if you have APS-C E mount glass, but if you have those lenses, then FX30 is even more a no brainer
Definitely a great freaking camera. It won’t bleed into the fx6 or fx3 for client work ever in my opinion with its overheating issues. Finally all these new cameras are slowly introducing all the features that my Samsung NX1 had 8 years ago. Sony is basically the only upgrade option for me feature wise.
So hyped for this one, Sony has been doing a crazy job the last few years with cameras they seem to be leagues ahead for price. This may well be a no brainer option if you can get hold of one! Such a shame about the shutter though grrrr.
I don't know much of anything about cameras, but if it's mainly being used for video and heat is an issue, then they should make the processor unit be a separate, attachable device (via cable) with active cooling, so you're not limited to just 15 or 30 mins or whatever of recording time before it overheats. Plus it would be cool to be able to upgrade just the processing unit every few years. I mean, it seems at this point cameras are making more strides in the electronics/processing than the actual camera hardware (lens, sensor, shutter, etc) from generation to generation anyways, so why not? They could still keep the necessary hardware inside it for video/photo for portability. Maybe I'm just off my rocker but it seems like something they could do
This is an awesome camera. Also great that you mentioned the Canon R8, a kind of forgotten camera that has 4K 60p oversampled from 6K at just $1499. Between Sony, Panasonic and Canon we are getting insane full-frame cameras for the value.
New to the channel so David is all I know, and he's phenomenal. I have no need for this camera because I'm pretty much still image only, but I was captivated. My video needs are pretty much taken care of by my LG V60 in manual mode.
The lack of good cooling is annoying on an otherwise great camera. Currently use a zv1 and the thermal shutdowns are absolutely annoying, so much so I'm looking at the fx30 as the upgrade instead of anything in the ZV line.
ZV-E1 has more dedicated features for vloggers who will shoot themselves at 24/30 fps most of the time. S5ii loses auto focus at 6k and HD 120 fps and there is warping /jello at the sides during active stabilisation.
It's nice to know not every product from every company is a race to the bottom. And actually Sony does a pretty good job with most of its notable consumer electronics. Playstation, TVs, cameras, and headphones are all categories that Sony absolutely kills it in.
I'm so glad they fixed that silly mode selection button and turned it into a 3-state switch. Huge improvement. I wish the camera would give you a warning if you start shooting video in "Camera Mode" too. I've done that a number of times and it kills the autofocus - you're standing there wondering why it won't stick to your face :(

The video didn't feel like a short circuit to me. I know the LTT videos don't really match the theme but it was very much more in depth and definitely not an unboxing. David did a marvellous job though.
I think given the heat problems on the brand new out of the box model, there might be some serious longevity problems with the ZV-E1 (I guess folks will just have to wait and see).
Hey linus Make a video where you add cooling to this camera - - make a threaded negative to the back of the camera ( behind the screen) with a thermal transfer plate attached to the processor - {to take the heat from the processor to the back of the camera } - make a small heatsink that can thread into this negative with active cooling - When you want to record long, flip out the screen and thread in this cooler - since the transfer plate is in the thread, it won't affect the monitor if you decided to use the camera without the active cooler This could be a really nice video and you'll get to use a lot of your fancy tools Please do it ✌🏽
I love how they really think 3k€ falls into the budget Camera section. The ZV-E10 is a budget Camera with an interchangeable lens. This is already mid- to high tier looking at the specs on Sonys site.
As a camcorder user I would love to see sony put this sort of sensor and features into a camera with the form factor and optical image stabilisation of the AX53. That would be my dream camera.
I’m confused with the placement of their new cameras tho. Why go for the FX series when the ZV series exist? Of course I get the amount of buttons available for the FX series but thats about it for the differences.
11:18 Let me correct that for your: "A part of their design philosophy is to give the Sony ZV 1 a really, really bad messy menu, even though they had the possibility to give it a good, usable and intuitive menu from the better cameras so they could upsell later versions of the ZV lineup, like the ZV-E1"
It's definitely a step in the right direction. They finally made a decent camera for vloggers that strikes the middle ground between idiot proof & people who want at least some useful features. Definitely not for me, I'll stick to my cheaper APS-C cameras that work great for streaming but are also decent little point & shoot cameras as well, but this is definitely right for the aspiring TH-camr who doesn't want to deal with all those dials, switches, and buttons for photography, but also doesn't want an insultingly bad camera like most "vlogger" cameras before this have been.
We see a lot of camera reviews and many streamers these days use them for their webcam but there is a whole camcorder market out there, I'm curious how they stack up specifically for streaming.
Wait... if this is $2200... why would I go for this over a used A74??? I presume this will have marginally better low light capabilities due to less megapixels, but you get more control and more versatility with the A7v. Or just get a used A7siii. I did not expect this price tbh... Feels like this should have been cheaper than the A7c in order to be viable. At this price point, this just became the most useless product so far for Sony imho, because for this money there is always something better. Especially if you get second hand gear. I would go for a used FX30 tbh, if you really need this. And vlogging doesn't really require full frame nevertheless. Or better yet: Get the new Panasonic Lumix S5 mkII. If video is what you mainly gonna do, get that one. Best IBIS, and now with good enough AF; especially good enough for vlogging.
@@MonicaHolly143 Now who has not done their research. With the exception of very low light conditions and fast panning, the final image quality you get out of the cameras is not much better in the A7siii. But yes, it is better for film-centric options. But just get a used A7siii then over this new one. But yes, in very dark situations, the A7siii/FX3 runs rings around the other options. But most people, and most vloggers do not need that.

Everyone here missing Brandon, I don't per se, but boy do I miss watching him actually *USE* the camera and then review the footage afterwards to get a decent evaluation of it instead of just playing with the camera and using about 5 seconds of footage shot with it in a 25 minute video.
These cameras need NEED active cooling. 15 minutes of recording is crazy town. Even a fan similar to the nintendo switch would make a massive difference.
just loved the content , lot of info and very well put up, never felt like a long video, shots added , the value of information added at the end part while summarizing was even better. worth every second of my watchtime. good luck for the next one.
I think they went way over kill with this camera I think the a7iii /c sensor would have been a much better and more affordable option for this camera. 2200/2300usd is way too much for this type of camera. Great for pro full time TH-camrs but I think a big ask for anyone else
That sensor is slow, Rolly, and not exactly low-light viable. The last thing you would want near a videocentric ZV body. If you want the iii/c sensor, advise to buy the c.
So u will choose a worse and old sensor 5 years ago than a new one that is better at low light, faster read, better autofocus, better color science and minimal rolling shutter ? Lol
I want a ZV-10 successor; the thing I loved it had the power-zoom toggle, but the video quality and video options out of that camera was not on par with what I would expect from Sony. Would love to build an APS-C amateur rig around the PZ 18-105 f4 lens.
@@MonicaHolly143 Haven't bought it because of the image quality. But the point is, the A6400 has better video quality than the ZV-E10, which is disapointing for a video-centric camera. That was my point.
@@POVwithRC Different software processing. Just look at a side by side comparison. This happens all the time in tech and an artificial way for companies to further distinguish products from one another.

@@lezmaka Sure but you do know those $1000 camera and lens combo are going to be straight trash for video in comparison to this sony camera and probably not even as good in photo mode either. Usually good hybrid cams cost a lot of money. My sony a7iii for example was over $1400 used (2400 ish new) just for the camera alone with no sd card or lens or anything (I live in Australia so its retail price is a lot higher compared to the US market) but it's a great camera for video and photography and nothing else compares that is cheaper than it so you really do get what you pay for when it comes to hybrid cams and having good autofocus etc that you typically don't see in cheaper full frame bodies.
It's honestly kinda surprising that we don't have some modern cameras with some sort of semi-exposed(heavily vented housing or something) heat sink on the end of a heat pipe or something. Heat rejection seems like the primary Achilles heel of most 'higher performance' cameras forever now, always seems to be a duty cycle limitation, and seemingly no options to do anything about it. Maybe Frore's AirJet will be the solution? I guess time will tell.
At one point you say it's the same sensor as the A7SII and at another point you say it is the same sensor as the A7SIII, which generation is it the same as?
Hello, very nice video! I have two questions about your camera, the Sony ZV-E1: What about overheating at 4K 120 fps? What is the risk of only having one SD card slot? Could the video be lost if there is a card error and you don't have a copy? Do you recommend this camera for professional Videography? I would be grateful for your answers as an experienced person with this camera.

- make a threaded negative to the back of the camera ( behind the screen) with a thermal transfer plate attached to the processor
- {to take the heat from the processor to the back of the camera }
- make a small heatsink that can thread into this negative with active cooling
- When you want to record long, flip out the screen and thread in this cooler
- since the transfer plate is in the thread, it won't affect the monitor if you decided to use the camera without the active cooler
This could be a really nice video and you'll get to use a lot of your fancy tools
Please do it ✌🏽
David is such a good all rounder of a host, in terms of his interests and knowledge. Nice asset for LMG imo
Just for information: The white camera at 2:24 is NOT a Sony a7iv, the Text should say Sony ZV E10.
I love David but man it feels weird not having Brandon with us. Hope you're doing well Brandon.
overheats - next please
vlogging camera without a wide angle lens - next please
still poor stabilisation -nexxxxtttttttt
i legit thought fx3 was insane for how tiny it is and powerful. Did not expect it to be beaten this bad
I love how they really think 3k€ falls into the budget Camera section. The ZV-E10 is a budget Camera with an interchangeable lens. This is already mid- to high tier looking at the specs on Sonys site.
Maaannn I got the A7c like 6 months ago. Awesome camera but this would have been perfect.
I feel the same way lol
I feel shortcircuit should be doing unboxing of the latest April fool's gear from lttstore
As a camcorder user I would love to see sony put this sort of sensor and features into a camera with the form factor and optical image stabilisation of the AX53. That would be my dream camera.
Thank you for reviewing this and explain it to layman terms
I’m confused with the placement of their new cameras tho. Why go for the FX series when the ZV series exist? Of course I get the amount of buttons available for the FX series but thats about it for the differences.
Seeing David here makes me miss They're just Movies. BRING IT BACK 💔
11:18 Let me correct that for your: "A part of their design philosophy is to give the Sony ZV 1 a really, really bad messy menu, even though they had the possibility to give it a good, usable and intuitive menu from the better cameras so they could upsell later versions of the ZV lineup, like the ZV-E1"
Exactly
Budget line up.... 2500$+
😂
ZV-E1 and ZV-E10. That’s not confusing at all…
I had Sony A7 Mark I with Samyang 14mm f/2.8 FE
And i've decided to buy something new.
I've taken Sony ZV-E1 with Samyang 35-150 f/2-2.8 FE
It's definitely a step in the right direction. They finally made a decent camera for vloggers that strikes the middle ground between idiot proof & people who want at least some useful features. Definitely not for me, I'll stick to my cheaper APS-C cameras that work great for streaming but are also decent little point & shoot cameras as well, but this is definitely right for the aspiring TH-camr who doesn't want to deal with all those dials, switches, and buttons for photography, but also doesn't want an insultingly bad camera like most "vlogger" cameras before this have been.
Seems like an amazing all-around video camera.
We see a lot of camera reviews and many streamers these days use them for their webcam but there is a whole camcorder market out there, I'm curious how they stack up specifically for streaming.
I love the editor calling the ZV-E10 an A7 IV, and linking to an A7 IV video while he talks about the ZV-E10.....
Wait... if this is $2200... why would I go for this over a used A74???
This has the same sensor as a7siii thats means a74 a73 and a7c are trash compare to this
@@MonicaHolly143 Now who has not done their research.
@@Wistbacka u asked why would u go this over a used a74 and i told u the reasons, ur the one whos asking so who really is the one whos not doing the research ??
@@Wistbacka u also said this should be cheaper than a7c, that just proves ur stupidity everyone who knows about sony cameras will not pick a7c over this lmao
This shouldve been on the main channel. My man spent almost half an hour reviewing a vlog camera
slight correction: 600mbit 60p and 300mbit 30p is the exact same ;) 10mbit per frame
this must be a sony sponsorship, there are tons of good full-frame milc cameras out there from nikon, canon, panasonic, etc.
Everyone here missing Brandon, I don't per se, but boy do I miss watching him actually *USE* the camera and then review the footage afterwards to get a decent evaluation of it instead of just playing with the camera and using about 5 seconds of footage shot with it in a 25 minute video.
Why don't companies put small heatsinks on the sensors/cpus on their video focused cameras
These cameras need NEED active cooling. 15 minutes of recording is crazy town. Even a fan similar to the nintendo switch would make a massive difference.
Love David and he does a great job but I can't help but feel a bit sad watching a camera video without Brandon :(
just loved the content , lot of info and very well put up, never felt like a long video, shots added , the value of information added at the end part while summarizing was even better. worth every second of my watchtime. good luck for the next one.
Lol
The fast rolling shutter is important for vlogging because of stabilisation for walking
How is this different from an A7C?
will you guys do a Panasonic s5ii video?
Great review- really appreciate the level of detail and overview of features.
50 watts for a camera seems like an insane amount of power for it to be using constantly. What does it use it for?
I wonder how many people just said they'll never buy a flagship Sony camera again? If I were an a7siii owner, I'd be livid.
More full frame consumer-ish camera bodies! The more pressure Nikon has from competitors, the closer I get to my full frame zF dream!
yes! give us more David!
8:00 That is not correct, both the FX6 and A7S II use a different Sensor.
The sensor is shared between the A7S III, FX3 and ZV-E1
I was expecting an April Fools camera review, lol. Wow this is actually a pretty cool product.
If it wasn't for the overheating id consider this camera, thats just unacceptable run times, my gh5 and s5 dont have overheating problems.
At 2:22, it looks like you mislabeled the ZV-E10 as the A7IV. Just a heads up!
I want a ZV-10 successor; the thing I loved it had the power-zoom toggle, but the video quality and video options out of that camera was not on par with what I would expect from Sony. Would love to build an APS-C amateur rig around the PZ 18-105 f4 lens.
U should have done ur research before buying, ur camera uses the old sensor half a decade ago. Only apsc sony camera that has a new sensor is the fx30
@@MonicaHolly143 Haven't bought it because of the image quality. But the point is, the A6400 has better video quality than the ZV-E10, which is disapointing for a video-centric camera. That was my point.
@@Wistbacka I'm not sure how the 6400 has better image qual than the ZV-E10, given both are sensored the same, and share processors.
@@Wistbacka both lf those have the same sensor hahahaha u just prove u dont really know about this cameras
@@POVwithRC Different software processing. Just look at a side by side comparison. This happens all the time in tech and an artificial way for companies to further distinguish products from one another.
I love when David does videos… but miss Brandon on these too
Hell yeah David! Nice one.
What is the material from which the Sony ZV-E1 is made? Polycarbonate or metal (magnesium or aluminum)?
I’m just in love with my Panasonic GH5 II, I was looking for a secondary camera just in case but the price for this one just cuts me out. I would’ve loved it if it was at 1500$
The overheating is unacceptable.
Brandon will be missed, but David is welcomed almost as much 😌
"Budget lineup" and $2200 starting price don't really go together, at least not for people that don't get to play with all the newest stuff
That's becuz u have no idea about camera industry, this sensor is found on cameras with 3000 and up price tag, so yes this is budget. Dont comapre this to apsc cameras becuz this is full frame.
And the word budget is use to compare the value of a thing relative to what it can offer, it is not based on ur bank acc
@@tim3172 that would make sense except there are canon and nikon full frame with lens for $1000 less.
@@MonicaHolly143 there are full frame available from canon and nikon for $1000 less so...
At one point you say it's the same sensor as the A7SII and at another point you say it is the same sensor as the A7SIII, which generation is it the same as?
quite professional explanation for tech quicky
Hello, very nice video! I have two questions about your camera, the Sony ZV-E1:
What about overheating at 4K 120 fps?
What is the risk of only having one SD card slot? Could the video be lost if there is a card error and you don't have a copy?
Do you recommend this camera for professional Videography? I would be grateful for your answers as an experienced person with this camera.
To save you the trouble, it’s 2100 freedom coins…
Ah love this. Excellent video, lots of great detail.
This camera is like putting a Hellcat engine in a Miata 😅
me carrying strobes , soft boxes with Nikon and the other guy chilling with a Sony in his sling bag "lemme cry "
