Sony's lack of firmware support creates an interesting situation. One would assume they do it so everyone will keep buying new cameras to get the new features, but it kind of incentivises the opposite, at least for people who have to consider a budget. If the features included when you buy are all you'll ever have you'll want to hold off buying anything new for as long as you possibly can
This puts everyone in a tough position, I have 2 FX-3s and 1 A7IV, as somebody that needs to have multiple angles when I'm shooting for corporate gigs and people speaking for long periods, the ZVE-1 for sure would over heat and be unreliable in a professional setting it's definitely a vlogging camera, i think the FX-3 is still the better option, but I am upset that Sony doesn't give all the new features in a firmware update to the owners with more expensive camera bodies
I l exactly like you, i m a pro filmaker. same set up (2 fx3 1 a7iv) i ve pre order the zv-e1 for additionnal caméra) i hope at least in hd it won t overheat or 4k 25!!

You are the only reviewer who knows that overheating is one of the major issues for many videographers and making real-life tests, this is why I mostly just watch your review. I am using Fujifilm XH2 for conference shootings. Plugging a USB-C charger, shooting 8K and using auto-reframe in Davinci to make it look like the camera is following the speaker works like a magic for me and even in 8K I have never had an overheating issue and I am yet to use the external fan.
Another great review. I like that you're happy to speak your mind in reviews, even if that is only tangentially related. It really is unacceptable for the more expensive Alpha cameras to not get these software features in firmware updates. It's incredible how many features the A1, in particular, is missing given it's market as the best Sont has to offer.
9:14 honestly since Sony started supporting gyro stabilization in post, I don't think these features are super necessary unless you need to deliver straight out of camera I also don't remember last time I used a gimbal with my A7SIII 🤔
I just got a FX30 and I like it a lot. This new camera is nice but limited. I hope the improved clear zoom image features are added via firmware to the FX30...I can always hope! It would be nice to keep eye tracking while using clear zoom...otherwise, this is a nice camera...for shorter videos. I'm happy with my FX30
The FX30 is a beast. I have 3 of them for my multicam shoots. That fan and the ability to run on forever given you have a good power source is a winner for me and saves so much time.
9:17 Correct me if i am wrong, when "Dynamic Active Stabilization" enabled its electronic stabilization only, IBIS or opitcal inside lens will not be used. Also role of "Clear image zoom" here only to upscale 4K video by 30% back to 4K resolution, is has nothing to do with electronic stabilization.
Great video! Looks like a great camera option for new buyers. Those of us with existing models definitely appreciate the firmware commentary. It must actually be harder for Sony to manage such a fragmented firmware/software base. I know I'll certainly think twice about buying another Sony body in future given their lack of support for my current camera even with the added cost of switching systems. It just seems very self-defeating on their part. Do you ever hear back from your Sony contacts on this kind of thing? The lack of communication with the rest of us is bad enough.
Great review Gerald! I had a bash with it and I think it's an excellent bang for buck camera I just wish my A7sIII also had some of these new features!
Were you able to test noise reduction at high ISO's? Is it possible to turn it off or are we still stuck using an external recorder to record without NR? (I was totally bummed by the A7SIII's inability to turn off NR at high ISO's. Anything above ISO 80,000 eats stars. The A7SIII thinks stars are noise at high ISO's. Very important for those who record astro video stuff like northern lights.) Thanks as always for the excellent review.
Your're such a cool dude, Gerald. I'm more just as appreciating your videos, because I can fully understand your entertaining character behind your excellent videos. "More is less", that's the message I understand in your whole metaphorical language within your actual lectures. Thank you for that!
I am also feeling frustrated with the lack of updates for the A7S III considering that all the newer but much cheaper cameras are getting new features that the A7S III and A1 should also have considering, as you mentioned, that they are "flagship" cameras. Thanks for your "Undone Rant". Hopefully Sony will take care of their existing customers.
Another great review by one of the world's best camera reviewers. It really is a fantastic little camera which sort of makes me look dumb for having forked out all that hard earned lolly when I bought the A1back in 2021.I had this niggle in the back of my brain when I bought it though. A little voice kept saying "don't do it , it will be out of date in about 9 months" I hope when Sony eventually/hopefully, do bring an update for the A1 firmware that I will not be among those who will be bitterly disappointed that many of the new features we have seen in the latest crop will be a glaring omission!
You know with that dynamic mode, this could be an epic b camera for weddings. Use the FX3 or FX30 as your main, and then do all your gimbal work, and detail shot with this little baby, and set the other for the long safety angles.
This is the only channel where I watch the video until the end. Love that he is not overreacting like Woooow its the best camera and you need to get it like other influencers with no transparency. Thats why, thumbs up Gerald! :)
The cinematic mode actually makes sense with the new Sony shooting app. You can pull directly from your SD card to the cloud and then upload from there. So if you are a content creator, you can have a really cool clean video uploaded to social media straight from your phone.
I have been thoroughly impressed by the quality of your reviews for long time, which I believe are much better than those of other reviewers. I appreciate that your reviews are concise and provide a lot of useful information that helps us understand the key points of a different aspects of cameras. Your consistency in delivering such high-quality content is commendable, and it has been an honor to learn from you. Thank you for your dedication to the deep dive in camera tech and for your unwavering commitment to imparting your knowledge to us. Your passion for what you do is truly inspiring, and it has had a profound impact on my love for cinematography
I'm surprised it can record 4k120 10-bit 4:2:2 with S-Cinetone onto an SD card, but the A7IV needs a silly expensive CFexpress type A cards for the same thing
I always told myself my FX6 and A7Siii combo was all I ever needed to make great videos and I wouldn’t need to upgrade in a long time. This camera is making me think they’re going to get me with software eventually…
5:20 The 56 minute 4k overheating while streaming seems like a pretty bad limitation for their target audience. 90 minutes at 1080p 60 fps isn't enough by far. Maybe 30fps is unlimited? I'd hope so. Many streamers go for hours at a time. Maybe I'm not understanding the numbers correctly. I often use a Sony A6000 without any issue live streaming 1080p 30 fps HDMI out for over 4 hours at a time.
That stabilization is very interesting! Auto framing looks great for vloggers but was more impressed with the dynamic active stabilization. Great review!
I've had the camera for a year. I enjoy using it for creating content online. I will however say that the overheating is an issue sometimes. When I batch film 15min videos. After about an hour I have to wait, or it cuts in the middle of a video. This is a bit annoying as I fear filming to long. I don't have that issue on my A7C for example. I could trust it would never overheat.
I think a comparison of this camera vs something like the fx30 would be cool, one has all the pro features on the body, I feel like they counter each other pretty well since they both seem to have what the other is "missing"
@@innomind fx30 is what I want it compared to not fx3, to be fair tho fx3 is not much different to fx30 ,basically just diff sensor, but that is why I think comparing fx30 to this camera would be sweet, its like they split fx3 into two cameras that each got different parts from the fx3, so they counter each other very well, they in theory would have strengths where the other camera has weaknesses
Gerald! Can you do a video explaining the difference between ProRes HQ, LT, 4:2:2, Proxy, etc? I don't get it and want to know which mode is best for what I'm doing.
To me it's like a GoPro with full frame 😄. Specs and price are great but I would choose the FX-30 because of the cooling fan for longer 4K recodings @60FPS. But I also seriously consider to wait for the Lumix S5IIX.
I don't think 20/1.8 becomes a virtual constant aperture 20-30/1.8 as said @08:25. The actual hole stays the same, so it won't be 30/1.8, but rather 30/2.7 (which is a very significant difference from 30/1.8). Variable aperture virtual zoom, not constant aperture. Please, correct me if I'm wrong... (Still very cool, though, of course.)
You were totally right about Sony and their laziness to make firmware updates. I think even the Sony A7III/A7RIII can have firmware improvements with the new menu. I wonder why they waste materials (which is not environment friendly) instead of delivering firmware updates on older capable cameras. They can sell the Firmware updates I don't care, but they have to listen to all those requests for firmware updates since the A7II ! Because the previous cameras cost too much as hell since the A7 3rd generation. I was thinking about switching to Canon since 2022, 1 year after I bought my A7RIII And with the new Canon R8... man, why did I buy Sony A7RIII at $2700 in 2021 if they don't release firmware updates... Canon R8 does so much better at a lot cheaper price. At least release a color science Firmware update for older cameras Sony !
It has all we have ever wanted: A7SIII sensor with 4K120p, A7RV autofocus, focus breathing compensation, LUT in camera, dynamic stabilization...What a camera !!
After having the Sony A7iv for almost a year I can say it's not really the camera for me. I shoot home videos, small client commercial/promo videos and photograph sports/video. I think the perfect combo for me would be this Sony ZV-E1 and the Sony A9. Those two combined would still cost less than the A7Siii/FX3/A7Riv
It depends on where you are - ZVE1 in my country (and I'm living in the EU, so nothing extreme or customs fee related) costs significantly more in preorder than the A7IV does already (but so did the FX30 for some time until it reached the price similar to the A7IV) and less than 1000€ less than the A7S3.
The Cameras and lenses are all amazing, but It's so frustrating that Sony doesn't update their higher end cameras which could easy use all of these features. Makes me wanna switch camera systems sometimes...
Wow mate, you still are hitting it out the park with your reviews! Been following for years but missed the feed for a while. Brilliant production and content, told me everything I needed to know (and more!) without lots of padding.👍🇦🇺🇬🇧😎Max.
Wow! Sony definitely needs to update their firmware across the board now. At least with the new menu system. At over $2K, it seems like a lot for someone coming from the APS-C world, but you have to think about the fact that new flagship cellphones (which tend to include just camera upgrades these days) are running $1000+. Wait 2-years more and you can upgrade your ZV-E10 to this...
Not much interest in this camera, but appreciate all of your high quality reviews and what you said at the end... I need two video centric cameras for filming African wildlife, but need to wait until Sony gives us AI AF chips in either the A1 or A7S III... Hey Sony, I want to give you some money.... how long are you going to make me wait please?! ;-)
Great review! It seems like Sony will be the creator of its own demise if they continue to neglect their loyal customers with this pathetic lack of software update and new software features! Sony, hello! Canon also some time ago decided to treat their user with total disrespect, and guess what? Lots of them have switched to Sony! If you gonna keep neglecting your fan base - now there’s a valuable proposition from Panasonic, and they are way better in terms of software updates, than you, Sony! You might face the same exodus as Canon had if you continue on this path!
This camera adds insult to injury. All the lies about the a7siii not having the processing power to get features. Meanwhile a cheaper camera thats reskinned can do it all. Id we don’t have these features by year end my next camera will definitely NEVER be a Sony. I regret my a7siii so much

Another great review! Thank you. I would just add an almost irrelevant remark: at 6:10 you say that the previous ZV cameras dont have a multi-interface hotshoe. The ZVe-10 actually has one. I dont know about the other Zvs....
The ZV-1 has the active hot shoe as well. Last year at NAB at the Sony booth, I interviewed them using their new wireless active hot shoe mic and receiver. So this is not new to the ZV line.
this will definitely be an amazing B cam for my studio, since i just committed to switching to the sony system and got lenses. the sensor is why you would get the FX3 and sony A7s3 anyway, having that makes it so worth it. the lowlight! one day we will have a $1000 camera that does it all (thanks to sony), but not quite yet. happy i made the switch to sony, clearly they are the way to go.
1st! Will add more to my comment after watching your video Gerald. Great review gerald! Everything about this vlogging camera seems on point as it is what all vloggers want. A camera that is easy to use without needing to attach a microphone and color grade their footage. Not having to worry about autofocus and be able to put whatever lens they desire on it. I definitely plan to get this camera in the future now as I do want a dedicated vlogging camera that is small in form factor and this E1 does all of that.
Thanks. Perhaps I missed it in your video, but does the camera have the same noise performance as the A7S3...? Also, how about external recording, say to an Atomos using Prores. I'd assume so, but is that confirmed? External power options? Would the heating issue be helped by using external power? Cheers.
7:30 I wonder :) Clear Image Zoom is it really cropping the sensor or it still uses all the sensor readout and just crops in digitally? I wonder how to test that. Maybe by testing on a 7m4 comparing the s35 4K against the FF 4K + 1.5x zoom...
Hello Gerald. I've been looking at some of the videos and while this camera is going to be a great one which I'm planning to add to my arsenal, one thing that I noticed is that most of the sample clips I've seen seem to be over sharpened with some of the artifacts you find in contrasty areas that you can find in smaller sensor cameras. I wonder if this is because the camera does over sharpen the footage automatically or something that has to do with the sensor as this is something that you don't see in the FX3 or A7Siii, even though apparently is the same sensor. Let me know if you experienced that as well.
Does using external power, either by a dummy battery or usb-c power instead of battery power improve run-times before overheating? - I'm using the ZV-e10 currently and can run indefinitely to an external capture device (using dummy battery). I would have hoped this wouldn't be a downgrade in runtime :(
These subject following, auto depth of field adjustments, and similar features are actually amazing. I'll be watching for future cameras to have these software features with more standard camera controls and body features. It's really impressive.
Totally agree with the rant about the lack of firmware updates. Remember when Fujifilm added totally new features to their cameras this way. 2.5 years after its release my X-E2 got eye detection surprisingly, for example.
I totally agree. Thanks for the A7siii love in this review… wish Sony would give it an upgrade. This camera sounds like a great B camera set up! Thanks for the review!
Dear Gerald, there is still a big question left unanswered by Sony and other channels: The camera is Timecode capable but can we feed external timecode with a (i.e.) Deity TC1 ? It does not have the "MULTI" port so how can we feed in the timecode without loosing audio tracks? THANKS A LOT and have a great day!

@@renaissancephoto It is not always the case, sometime in the past they have fixed issues with firmware update, but i'm sure if that the case we have to wait for months and i don't think i will wait all that bs
Sony's lack of firmware support creates an interesting situation. One would assume they do it so everyone will keep buying new cameras to get the new features, but it kind of incentivises the opposite, at least for people who have to consider a budget. If the features included when you buy are all you'll ever have you'll want to hold off buying anything new for as long as you possibly can
Still holding!
Me too. Not worth downgrading for a couple features.
It definitely couldn't get all the features from ZV-E1, since some of them rely on Ai processing, which FX-3 does not have.
I l exactly like you, i m a pro filmaker.
same set up (2 fx3 1 a7iv)
i ve pre order the zv-e1 for additionnal caméra) i hope at least in hd it won t overheat or 4k 25!!
If Gérald could tell us more about overheating (in hd for exemple) how long?
ZV-E1 + A7R5 or EOS R3 + R5 or R6M2 Combo vs. S5II and maybe later S1HII - which combo would you recommend (not looking on prices) for client work (photo + video), some vlogging and run and gun + here and there real estate photo and video?
Hi everybody! I’m Gerald Undone, the definitive camera gear review channel.
9:14 honestly since Sony started supporting gyro stabilization in post, I don't think these features are super necessary unless you need to deliver straight out of camera
I also don't remember last time I used a gimbal with my A7SIII 🤔
Awesome review as always Gerald! And I totally agree with you at the end. Sony needs to listen more to its customers or else they’ll lose them.
Great info! Do you know if the ZV-E1 has 16bit or 24 bit audio? What is the best XLR adaptor to add to it? Thanks!
I would also love to see some of the features in my fx30!
How can you compare it with a7s3 or fx3 this body doesn't give 16bit raw output at all so there is a huge difference
Great review Gerald! I had a bash with it and I think it's an excellent bang for buck camera I just wish my A7sIII also had some of these new features!
what do you think about low light high ISO in Slog3 and does the Slog2 is missing on this camera ???
OH shieeet. I just bought S5II and I dont know if I am now regreting my decition. Any help? :Dd
I've been a ZV-E10 user for ~2 years now and I was excited to see this release. Maybe a future upgrade down the line is incoming...
Gerald, your rant was spot-on. The lack of focus breathing comp on the FX3 is the only reason why I didn't buy it. Thank you for all you do.
The fx3 now has focus breathing compensation.
Great review... as always! Thanks for being straight up on the issues. All substance, no fluff. Love the silly outro!
The 'chasing a woman with a baby, through an underground parking garage' is my new favourite test.
For what, 10 minutes before melting?
@@Ken-vl4wk Here in the UK, shooting clips in 30s-5m clips you'd be able to shoot all day. We barely ever get to 20degrees C ambient
I personally like it. But I'm happy with the a7iv.
Thanks for the excellent review..
I always told myself my FX6 and A7Siii combo was all I ever needed to make great videos and I wouldn’t need to upgrade in a long time. This camera is making me think they’re going to get me with software eventually…
You have almost nothing to be jelly off with those two cameras, honestly.
@@lucasliaskos no not really jealous at all. I’m just hoping Sony updates some of their older more expensive cameras like Gerald said.
Naw. You got the goods to go.
A7iii with the right lens still matches great with my a7siii. Impressive!
@@TravisVarga I’m sure you can get it to match but no 10-bit colour :/
FX 3 only adds heat sink extended recording and body modularity to attach various gear to it.
@@innomind cine ei
@@innomind fx30 is what I want it compared to not fx3, to be fair tho fx3 is not much different to fx30 ,basically just diff sensor, but that is why I think comparing fx30 to this camera would be sweet, its like they split fx3 into two cameras that each got different parts from the fx3, so they counter each other very well, they in theory would have strengths where the other camera has weaknesses
@@innomind and mechanical shutter
But I also seriously consider to wait for the Lumix S5IIX.
a gopro with real 15 stops ..and full frame look? wow
The release of this camera makes me super excited… For the obvious upcoming A7SIV 🤘🏻🙏🏻😜
17:44 finally the "Cinema" is with Gerald! 😂
I was thinking about switching to Canon since 2022, 1 year after I bought my A7RIII
And with the new Canon R8... man, why did I buy Sony A7RIII at $2700 in 2021 if they don't release firmware updates... Canon R8 does so much better at a lot cheaper price.
At least release a color science Firmware update for older cameras Sony !
Thank you for that rant! My a7s3 agrees with you. Gotta say I'm seriously considering this for my 1st b cam.
Great review as usual, but I am 100% on the same emotional rollercoaster of "awesome new features, when are they coming to my A7Siii"
bro your channel is so good. love all your work.
It has all we have ever wanted: A7SIII sensor with 4K120p, A7RV autofocus, focus breathing compensation, LUT in camera, dynamic stabilization...What a camera !!
I mean technically at this moment it does not have 4k 120p. Its supposedly being released later on a future firmware.
Another monster historical review! Thank you for existing, Gerald.
Love your review Gerald! Wanted to know how the new digital stabilization was and got my answer instantly
How's the over heating if you set it up with AC power and a dummy battery? Would be the setup for a cheap B camera in long interview settings.
my new webcam
For sure!!
You might face the same exodus as Canon had if you continue on this path!
stop trying to speak for everyone and only speak for yourself, you're giving off mob mentality energy with that comment
I hope you're able to do a comparison of the upcoming Lumix S5 II X vs this ZV-E1 soon.
FIRST!
Gordon with the win. 💜🏆
Nice!!!!
I was about to pull the trigger for a A7S3/FX3!! should I get the ZV-E1 instead???
This camera adds insult to injury. All the lies about the a7siii not having the processing power to get features. Meanwhile a cheaper camera thats reskinned can do it all. Id we don’t have these features by year end my next camera will definitely NEVER be a Sony. I regret my a7siii so much
You can sell yor 7SIII to me. Are you based in Europe? 😁
@@TheSmkfts lol no I’m a Canadian. I will sell it in the next year and never buy another Sony again tho. Panasonic is looking better and better every day. Save yourself some money on my used a7siii and go buy an s5 mark II.
Another great review! Thank you. I would just add an almost irrelevant remark: at 6:10 you say that the previous ZV cameras dont have a multi-interface hotshoe. The ZVe-10 actually has one. I dont know about the other Zvs....
I wonder can you use the Auto Framing features while streaming to a capture card for live shows?
The ZV-1 has the active hot shoe as well. Last year at NAB at the Sony booth, I interviewed them using their new wireless active hot shoe mic and receiver. So this is not new to the ZV line.
Hey @geraldundone is the ZVE1 weather proof? (Has weather sealing?)
i was wondering if the new ember freefly camera will be something you review compared to the wave freefly high speed camera
The cinematic mode is my favorite feature. Sometimes you just want that for an edit and it's a time saver so you can focus on the creative!
So which camera would have an advantage for just using a camera to record in a studio? A a7c or this?
this will definitely be an amazing B cam for my studio, since i just committed to switching to the sony system and got lenses.
the sensor is why you would get the FX3 and sony A7s3 anyway, having that makes it so worth it. the lowlight!
one day we will have a $1000 camera that does it all (thanks to sony), but not quite yet. happy i made the switch to sony, clearly they are the way to go.
So I was going to buy the fx30… and now this shows up! Full frame vs aps-c for more or less the same price. Would be a good video Gerald! 😉
Thank you Gerald, particularly for the overheating timings. Much appreciated.
Fuji is the best with firmware updates. That’s why I shoot with them.
I totally agree. Thanks for the A7siii love in this review… wish Sony would give it an upgrade. This camera sounds like a great B camera set up!
Thanks for the review!
Dear Gerald, there is still a big question left unanswered by Sony and other channels:
The camera is Timecode capable but can we feed external timecode with a (i.e.) Deity TC1 ? It does not have the "MULTI" port so how can we feed in the timecode without loosing audio tracks? THANKS A LOT and have a great day!
woah! Does it do 10 bit as well?
Yep.
Looks like a lovely video camera, and for folks that don't need higher resolution output for photography I think it's an easy buy/trade. But as a complementary camera, I wish it was less expensive...
I love the rant in every new Sony camera video! 👍🏻 Keep it going Gerald, hope Sony listens and soon gets it together and release a firmware update for the A7SIII and the A1!
I didn't like the overheating part. And I wish it had extra 1/4" mounts, but the stabilization and tech features are really incredible.
Your reviews are amazing man! Keep them coming I’m buying this camera because of you!
I always come here first for review because i consider you the most honest youtuber in the cameraworld
Woah Gerald, you didn't tell us you were a VFX MASTER! That outro was next level.
How is the screen clarity in daylight outside compared to the FX3 or does it suck like the A7C
