As an Occupational Therapist who works at a primarily ABA practice, I face weekly questions regarding this specific function of behavior. In order to fully understand sensory functions without simply finding a generic replacement behavior one must understand physiology (including the neuro pathways carrying sensory input throughout one's body) that impact the way an individual experiences their various environments. If more OTs and BCBAs worked together to scientifically measure and understand both the psychological and physiological factors impacting behavior our clients would be much better served.
It’s literally the only stimulus function when you look at the definition of a stimulus from our field; so yeah, agreed it’s all about physiology and sensory organs! There’s some cool work all over, and hope it slowly synthesizes. I think one other issue is just lacking training programs in our field - I had a whole class on physiological psych (weird edge case!). Thanks for tuning in, and making the world a little better through an interdisciplinary approach :)
