    It’s a Winchester, even if it’s made in Japan. Best Winchesters since the pre-64’s. My 1886 also loves the Remington 405 gr @ 1600 fps. Thanks for the video.

    I like my Miroko 1886 in 45-70 made in 1998 and the crescent buttplate gives it that extra beauty....I shoot Leverevolution FTX 325 ....Octagon barrel, Rocky Mountain front sight, Full length magazine, pistol grip, Tang sight but at 80 I did have an offset scope installed using a 3A base....You are presenting very good videos....

    Put the buttstock further out towards the point of your shoulder. I have a Miruko 1886 also, and the crescent buttplate needn't be a problem if held and supported in the correct position.

    • @JWheeler331
      @JWheeler331  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I figured that out. I played with the positioning of the buttstock and got it to be pretty comfortable after a little shooting. Thanks for the heads up though and thanks for watching.

    Octagon barrel sets it off real nice! Step dad had an all weather in 45-70. We went out to shoot and there was one of those thick aluminum beer cans on the ground, he put it in the crotch of a big weed and said I'm gonna shoot through the neck! He took his shot, the can flew 10 yards! Went to recover the can, he missed the neck by 1/2" but ever since then I've had respect for the 45/70 round !

    A tip on the crescent butt stock. It’s made to rest out on your arm further. You shouldn’t have either pointed end digging into you. The bottom goes under your arm pit. The other above your shoulder. If you bring your right elbow up about parallel with your chin it helps everything align properly. It’s designed to grip your shoulder so you can run the lever without taking it off your shoulder. Sorry it was being so hard on you but I had the same problem until someone taught me. I always thought they looked cool but then they hurt me so bad. You just can’t have them in on you chest like a straight shotgun stock, they have to be out on your arm so the pointed ends aren’t jabbing you. They should be fairly comfortable to shoot if you shoulder it right.

      I have an 86’ Miroku takedown but in 45-90. If you get into reloading, something to know; the takedown version is not as strong as a solid frame because half the threads around the barrel chamber area are milled away as are the mating threads in the receiver so only half that area is supported.

    There was a time when I hated the curved pistol grip on lever rifles. This was before I ever shouldered or used one, an opinion/taste formed on looks alone. My 1886 is my first and thus far only curved pistol grip lever rifle and my opinion was quickly changed on them once I shouldered and fired it for the first time. So much more comfortable for me and now I've come to prefer them over straight grips for looks too! 🤣 I still like straight grips and like them fine, but now moving forward I prefer curved and will seek them out specifically. Again, very nice rifle Sir. Glad you like it. That particular model you have was only made for one year, 1999. It's sort of an outlier as it was made when operations were still active at Winchesters original factory in New Haven CT. Yes it was built by Miroku in Japan, but they were commissioned by USRA in New Haven and the stamping on the barrel indicates that. I'm not sure if any other limited 1886 runs were ever done before 2006 when operations ceased in New Haven and USRA went defunct.
    Also, looks like you are using Trapdoor action safe factory loads there. Your hitting low is a pretty good indicator that the P.O. was likely working with stouter loads. I've found that your velocity will have a pretty significant effect on POI elevation. I'd bet that if you loaded up some Level II 300gr stuff she would be just about on the money.
    Also, I've found that the Hornady 325gr FTX has yielded impressive accuracy from both my 1886 as well as my Henry H024. That bullet gets mixed reviews for performance on game as well as target materials set up to mimick game tissue and bone. So YMMV on that aspect. But one thing I've never experienced or heard anyone else complain about is the accuracy of the FTX. I haven't tried it in my 1886 since I had it converted to 45-90. But when it was a 45-70 I tried it and those rounds were impressive for accuracy.

      Thanks for the info. I’m very happy to have this one. Like you, I always preferred the straight stock also but was okay with the pistol grip stocks…. Just never had one for a long time. Theses stocks are beautiful and comfortable though as you know. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.
      Edit: just realized your message was longer that I saw. Just saw the rest of it.
      I’m sure the previous owner was using a hotter load. I’m planning on trying several different bullet styles and weights. I want to eventually stretch out the distance on this rifle.

    It's stamped Winchester on the barrel, so it's a Winchester. Just like many Colts are not made by Colt, but made under license. They're still Colts.

    I really want a set of those sights. Where did you find them? I have deluxe Cimarron 1886 in .45-70 and I really want to add these to mine. Those were originally for the Sharps rifles but fit the 1886s.

    Vernier is easy. Staff hash marks read 5 minutes. Slider has 5 hashes starting with the lowest/bottom hash. Each slider hash is a minute. First lower line on slide is matched to each 5 minute on the staff IE your starting point.
    Each mismatched hash on the slide after the first lowest hash is matched to the nearest 5 minute.
    Example: You're at 50 minutes and need 54, you'll turn your dial and raise the slide up, when the 4th hash on your slide matches with a hash on the staff, you're at 54 minutes.
    You'll start at 0 and work up to match your point of aim to point of impact at 100 yards. Write that down, stick with that load. You'll want to know your muzzle velocity and ballistic coefficient too and plug that data into something like JBM ballistic calculator along with the starting minutes you now have.
    So if you have a starting point of 54 minutes at 100 yards, it'll take your minutes into account then add the come ups for 200 - 1000 yards. You can just write that down and bingo you have a dope card for that rifle and load. JBM won't be perfect, it'll get you really close so you'll need to fine tune by +/- an inch or so to get dialed in and know the actual dope on the staff.
    It's really no different than a rifle scope save it's 1 and 5 minute increment rather than 1/4 minute.

      I was hitting lower at times in my video too shooting my piece at the cantaloupe but unlike your very accurate new rifle my piece at 50 feet hits a broad group but still it would keep all it’s shots in an area that’s the size of the average man’s torso at 50 feet distance away which is what mid 19th century revolvers were designed to do. Officers and cavalrymen were trained to aim at the center of the torso which is roughly where the belt buckle would have been. I was aiming lower and managed to hit the cantaloupe a couple of times that way but then when I aimed directly at it since sometimes my piece hits more point of aim I managed to hit it a few times towards the end which indicates to me that since I was hitting low when I was aiming low quite often that my piece hits point of aim more than I give it credit for even though at times it hits about a handful of inches high and a handful of inches left. It’s a might unpredictable

    • @JWheeler331
      @JWheeler331  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@HiVizJoe Most of the replicant handguns shoot a good bit high and anything under 50 feet. I have a good bit of them and nearly all of the shoot High out of the box. Especially the black powder versions.

    • @HiVizJoe
      @HiVizJoe ปีที่แล้ว

      Usually mine does but I know that when I hit the second shot I fired it it hit the left side of the cantaloupe when I was aiming directly under it a few inches so it hit a handful of inches high and a couple of inches left but the 9th shot when it hit it the shot hit the bottom of the cantaloupe and knocked it over and I was aiming the same way which I reckon means had I been aiming spot in I would have hit the top of it which is how my 16th shot hit when I aimed directly at it and the 17th and 19th shots hit even lower when aiming directly at it yet some of my shots that missed even though as far as elevation goes they hit point of aim (aiming low and hitting low) yet they still hit a few to a handful of inches to the left so it is very imprecise. I would have missed my first 5 shots if I had aimed spot on because the 2nd shot that hit the side would have over shot it. Yet my 9th shot would have taken a chunk out of the top of it had I aimed spot on just like my 16th shot did when I aimed spot on. My general rule of them now is to aim just a few inches low and a few inches to the right
