  • Hunters and shooters alike have valued Marlin firearms, especially the company’s lever actions, for over 100 years. Now, as we sit poised on the edge of a new beginning for the Marlin brand under Ruger’s ownership and production, Guns.com takes a look at three Marlin rifles needed to hunt any North American game animal.

I'm 71 now, but my first lever action rifle in my 20's was the Marlin 39 Century Ltd anniversary carbine in .22lr. I helped many farmers here in Western Mass dairy & agricultural land by dispatching more Groundhogs or Woodchucks as we call them, than I could count. I didn't consider owning another lever action gun for decades until maybe a decade ago when I bought that .45-70 on your table. Since then I've added a few Henry models to my stable of treasured firearms & I love & trust them all. You are a very eloquent speaker & flawlessly deliver your message in a way that keeps my attention & is entertaining & educational. Keep up the excellent content.

I am with you. Love Marlin lever rifles. I have 5 of them. 1895GS, 1895SS, 1894 44mag, 336 30-30, 336 35 rem. Great rifles all of them. Great designs, easy to maintain. Outstanding value and performance. I am so glad Ruger picked up the great American Marlin lever rifles.

Thank you thank you for showing correct shooting form and not
lowering and looking at the gun while working the action.
So many lever shooters and especially bolt action shooters today drop the gun off the shoulder, take their eyes off the target to look down at the gun while they work the action, then put everything back up
on their shoulder and have to locate their target again. Then they repeat that for subsequent shots.
Many many these days would do well to watch the shooting on this video to see proper form being used

My first gun that wasn't a milsurp was a Glenfield Model 30 (Marlin 336) that I got at age 15. Loved that thing. Great video!

Kristin, thank you for posting this excellent presentation. We out here in southern California love to shoot our many Marlin lever-action long guns out in the Mojave desert. As such, we call ourselves, informally, the Mojave Lever Crew. There are over 70 of us that share this affliction online through a firearms' message board forum. Three of us are the ones that originally met and went shooting together in the Mojave, and it's just grown from there, because, who?! does not love a good lever-action. We have here in the armory six Marlin: a '51 39A, a 1989 1894CS357, a 1967 336 Texan SRC (in .30-30), an 2007 1894FG, a 2018 (Remlin that needed some love) 1894SBL and my second favorite (next to the 39A) - a 2005 Model 1895GS. I handload for all but the rimfire but will also run a box of commercial fare through them too. So glad to see Ruger's rescue of Marlin and one day we will add a Ruglin to our group. Thanks again for speaking directly to our hearts!

My dad gave me a Marlin 1894 in .44 Mag for my birthday when I turned 15 and it was a trusty hunting rifle for over 40 years and I never missed with it. Well, I passed it down to my oldest son on his 35th birthday. My dad, in his mid 80s now, is still a big Marlin fan and has about 4 hanging on his wall. I still laugh that the last Marlin he bought is in 45-70; after his "sighting in" session he retired it as "we don't have anything around here that needs that much killing"! I haven't seen many Marlins in gun stores for a while but I am feeling a bit anemic in the .44 calibers. I have become a Henry fan of late acquiring .357/.38 and .45-70 exemplars of their line and, well, they ain't bad.

All the above. Especially the 1894 chambered for .327 Fed Mag to be a companion rifle with the revolvers Ruger already makes in .327. Also, want to see the Marlin rimfire rifles with tubular magazines to come back. I think tubular magazines make more sense with rimfire calibers than centerfire calibers.

I love your video presentations. Your content, enthusiasm and attitude is awesome. I have a Marlin Dark 1895 in .444 Marlin and it is one of my very favorites. It does kick a bit but it packs a serious punch. My .444 with a Leupold tactical 1-4x illuminated brings that 100 yard target right in there and I get great accuracy at that range with it. Thank you.

I would like to see Ruger build Marlin 336ER in 307 Win, 308ME, 338ME, 348 Win, 35 Rem, & 356 Win, as well as the 30-30, 375Win, and the old 25-20. Even if Ruger would take a special order for any of these above, it'd be great. Hard to beat the old .444 Marlin and 45-70 Govt too.

I have a Marlin 881 purchased new in 1994 and love it. Bolt action, tubular magazine and feeds .22lr and .22 shorts dependably. It has the 'JM' engraved on the barrel, walnut stock and was manufactured before Marlin was sold. Don't see it mentioned much on the net. Thanks for this well-presented video on the 45-70.

Glad to see you on another video. I really liked the one where you compared the Remington made Marlin Dark Series all weather 1895 45-70 to the Henry X model. It was so obvious at that time how superior the Marlin was to the Henry. I am partial to Marlin lever guns in 45-70. Remington made the best Marlin lever guns ever!!

I love my 39a Mountie and my 444. Both are JM stamped. I would like to see Marlin make an affordable lever action 500 smith. Preferably one that is cut and with the proper twist to shoot bullets weighting up to 700 grains. That would go perfectly with my revolver. That would greatly out shine the 444 or 45-70 from my point of view.

  • @brianlee6849
    @brianlee6849 2 ปีที่แล้ว

That was impressive accuracy on the 45-70. That would be impressive even for a single shot 45-70 much less a lever action. Was that a Remington era or Marlin? I think on the 1894 I would rather pair it with 357 Magnum and a Smith & Wesson model 19 357 Magnum / 38 special. But the 44 mag is awesome too. I grew up with the 39a it just doesn't get any better than that in my opinion. I have the receiver mounted aperture site on mine and it is amazingly accurate and extremely intuitive off hand. Thank you 👍

When Marlin was sold to Remington and moved to the Remington plant that was the end of Marlin. Marlin used to make great quality guns but Remington ended that. I hate that Marlin went to Ruger. Ruger makes lower quality guns these days and they have absolutely no quality control. I'm amazed at how flawed some of Ruger's guns are that I've see lately. They should have never left the factory.

Never been wild about the Ruger auto pistols except for my .22 target which is excellent (except taking it down putting back together though they have since fixed on this model). I also have a .44 carbine semi-auto, a mini 14 and an SP 141 (which is a souped up 101) which is finished as nicely as a Python. I have found the quality in all to be excellent. I am a SIg/Glock man when it comes to defensive or competition pistols but if you ever saw or shot my Marlin Dark you would want one.

I hope Ruger has a Marlin 336 in .35 Remington. The .35 Rem has a lot more power and guts than the .30-30. Currently Henry chambers the .35 Rem, but I prefer Marlins. Count on the 1895 to be chambered in .444 Marlin which is the Super .44 Magnum. It has big time lever gun power even if it's not as versatile as the old .45-70.

It is a great opportunity for lever action fans (me included), Marlin levers what ever model are extraordinary shoots, I have 3, .444,35 Rem and 357. All shoot as well or better than your 45-70.
Ruger will I believe do better than Remington quality wise and I hope they bring back all of the old favorites, and also the newer short-lived chamberings such as the 308 Marlin and 336 Marlin,
as I believe the reason they were not a success was due to quality issues from Remington rather than the cartridges themselves.
