Welcome to the 628DirtRooster channel where hobby beekeeping is a way of live. I hope you enjoy this second hive live removal with Jeff Horchoff and myself. Don't forget to subscribe before you leave.
Jeff and I recently removed a small to medium size hive under this same home. These were both live removals or "rescues". The property owner contacted me to remove one honey bee hive. When I went by to see what I'd be dealing with I found that there were what appeared to be two separate hives based on the distance between two entry points. When we opened the floor for the first removal my suspicions were confirmed. Two separate hives in the same joist space at the back of the home. The second hive was bigger and healthier. We never found the queen on this one. Two days after the cut out I checked the hive and there were about fifteen queen cells.
Jeff came over from south Louisiana on very short notice to lend a hand with both removals. What a great guy! So much fun to hang out with. Check out his TH-cam channel and subscribe.

Here is the first removal video: • Hive Removal From An E...
I'd like to thank Anthony, Treasure and their boys for their hospitality while we worked on their home.
Music: Not Too Cray by Huma Huma
Had some viewer questions on a few pieces of equipment so here are our Amazon affiliate links to those items:
Little Giant Ladder amzn.to/2binr15
Nikon d5300 camera amzn.to/2bA5Xy6
A small portion of this video was shot using the Nikon but most of this video was shot with an Iphone 6.
Also, smoking bees with nacho chips is perfectly acceptable unless you are close to a Taco Bell in which case you may give them the munchies and have them swarming the drive through window.
That moment when you just casually found a bee video, then ended up at this channel, four hours deep in watching videos and ending up subscribing. The calmness and tone just makes it hard not to like
LOL Thanks Luis.
Living that moment right now, it's awesome.
One Uno i completely understand i haven't liked any thing secular as much as i like the dirt rooster channel
A great channel!
Welp, looks like its a bit of a trend
Absolutely love it when you bring Jeff with you on a removal one of the funniest guys
We'll do more next year I'm sure. Things are slowing down now.
It's wonderful to watch two 'competitors' working together in such harmonious fashion given the countries current emotional, psycho-social unrest. Very information. I enjoy both channels.
the bees at 3:01
"Hey guys they're back"
"shh shh they might not be here for us"
"maybe...let me go check" *walks out then runs back in* "shit guys they're here for us this time!"
Love it when y’all get together!!!
Yeah! best regards to both of you guys! I enjoy your videos so much! thanks for share!
Perfect home for bee's small , perfect little door and all. Awesome putting brood frame up there with them. Happy Beekeeping.
I didn't want to do this one but looking back this was a fun removal.
Makes you want to start raising bees. You two gentleman have done more to promote hobby bee raising with your calm an pleasant ways. Thank you.
We love you Debra. :)
You guys are a trip. Keep on 'keepin'.
Awesome removal! That was a nice sized colony! We just did our second honey harvest here and wow. It was a good year here! 3 gallons of honey from just 2 hives. Next year we will harvest from all 5 and bee in buzzness.
So cool! It's always fun when you begin to reap the benefits. Of course you probably do more so that most of us with the garden and all.
I love watching you two work together or just meeting up.
Never a dull moment. Always entertaining. 😎🐝🐝🐝
Just having fun.
You are so good natured.
Beekeeping is on my bucket list and I know it can't be as easy as you make it look
Love you guys together! Love from the South Philly !! City Life wish I could have my own colony! 😩 I’m moving in the next year and I’ll have a nice yard with some grass and try and somehow honey bees 🐝 in NJ🥰 cannot wait!
Randy, thanks for all the videos, being allergic, this as close as I can get to something I've always wanted to do. Don't ever stop the videos, stay safe bud
Come on down. We'll wrap you in bubble pack and you can jump in with us.
Thumbs up. Thanks again Randy. I appreciate your time that you spent for putting this video together and uploading it for us to enjoy. Hope you have a good day. Take care
Thanks Tim. Have a great one yourself.
This is one of the best channels I've found ... you had me hitting the subscribe button only 2 minutes into the first video I watched! Keep up the great work and thanks for the happy pills in every one of them!
Thanks for the kind comment and for subscribing.
I love it when you two work together. such fun
We were going to try and do one this year but time is getting away from us.
Loved getting this far back into yours and Mr. Ed's relationship. I can't quite get myself to watch his videos even though I love watching him on yours. I just think about things more along your lines, I think you ruined me for any other beekeeper/cutout videos! I got lucky and found the right channel as far as the way my mind thinks. Attention to detail like you do it is what clicks with me.
I live up in Moselle and I plan to get into beekeeping. I used to help my uncle with his bees when I was a kid. Just can't wait till spring to get started!
Let me know if you need a supplier. My brother is in Purvis.
Really enjoyed that. my first year beekeeping and I harvested 20kg (about 44lb) from my two hives. Thanks to your videos that really helped me. Thank you!
Nice haul. That'll hold you for a while. :)
The chuckle brothers of beekeeping are entertaining us all again. Love it!
That'll be our new joint channel name.
great video you guys look like you have a lot of fun together
Sure do. He's a good sport.
Those boys were very nice. That hive looks fantastic as well.
They were very nice and were very interested in the bees.
And they didn't seem scared at all.
Don Challenger They weren't they hung out with us for quite a while. Future beekeepers maybe.
Man, that is some sticky messy work! The honey looks delicious. I subscribed to Jeff - you two sure work well together and are funny too! Lotsa bees. I will be interested to hear if you guys got the queen. Nice job on the video, thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching and subscribing to Jeff. We didn't get the queen.
You guys are too funny...getting those bees some salsa and nacho sauce from old taco bell wrappers.
You 2 make an amusing pair. Good to have someone to work with like that
He is a pleasure to hang out with.
Yall are so much fun to watch.
U 2 are my fav bee keepers
U care about them and collect them with minimum loss of the bees
Appreciate that Douglas.
Those are cute little boys. You had their attention with that smoker!
Thank you so much for showing this. Especially the part about cutting off the honey before you reframe. I’ve got a big cross combing mess in my hive that I need to correct. The only solution I can see is to cut it off The foundationless frames with a 2 inch strip of foundation and reframe them without the strip. For some reason, they quit building the comb with the strip of frame in the middle and started building it all to one side. They seem pretty resistant to building on my foundations. Wish me luck
Fingers crossed
Beautiful strong hive. Had to give Jeff a sub, he looks like a pretty funny guy., and good with bees. Keep up the good work.
He's a good dude.
So that's what you can do to make that dreaded long drive thru line disappear! Always learn something from you Randy! ;-) Good job!
New tips posted weekly. lol
Another great video! You guys make a pretty good team.
Frick and Frack the bee guys.
Really awesome to see you two working together. Y’all the main ones I watch. Wish we had bees like that in the Texas panhandle. O well. I try.
Cruisin on I-10... been down that Hwy many times. Can't get enough of it. Keep them videos coming. They're Great!
Shame you can't be here this week. Cruising The Coast is going on.
you two are somthin else trying to catch Creole bees with mexican tortilla chips- maybe next time throw a lil BBQ in there and theyll march right in the hive and take the comb with em-lol-- those ladies seemed a bit more aggressive than the other hive you took from there-nice haul though and huge amount of brood comb- love watching you both work so well together- lol-- many blessings
I think you're on to something. I should sprinkle Tony Chachere's in my smoker and put Tabasco on my frames.
Love your videos man, each one just fascinates me.
Thanks Chilly. Glad you like them.
You were right about the jealousy shot, I'm jealous every time I see you take a big bite of comb honey, :'-(, had to order my 64's from Staples today
i literally have no idea how i stumbled on your videos, but i subbed cos i find bees kinda fascinating lol, and you seem like a decent bloke.
Thanks for the sub man.
Heeeeey!! I didn't know you and Jeff were BFF's. 😉 He is so nice. Love his videos too!!
Oh yeah, good guy there.
Beautiful hive!
Good times too.
You guys crack me up like nothing else.
I would like visit you some day and watch you do this kind of work, i been watching your channel for about three weeks.
Good vid! (and a great hat and veil on Jeff!)
I hope they sent you one with your equipment. I'm gonna steal his and spray paint over the name. lol
LOL - I got one. I'm a big fan of boonie hats :)
Bobbees! Beekeeping Me too just not with flow on them. ;)
I love watching both of you guys. Jeff is definitely a bit more aggressive in his methods. Like wham bam thank you ma’am. Randy is a more of a slow burn. Lol opposites attract.
you and Jeff make a good team
Tango and Cash?
bees are fascinating
I think so too.
Man you 2 ARE NECK & NECK ON THE AMOUNT OF SUBSCRIBERS YOU HAVE‼️😬😬❤️❤️
I think TH-cam is messing with us. ;)
yup,,,still watching your videos,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,and thanking you
Glad you're hanging in there.
It bothers Jeff so much to leave a queen. I think its so funny lol
I saw one of your videos today that was made I while ago and Im so happy you still post!
Still going.
Do you repair walls etc. after removal? I love your videos you have a good sense of humor and a loving attitude. Mark Farlow in NC
Sometimes. Depends on what the property owner wants or what I have time for.
Ah, I was getting ready to ask why you were cutting out the honey and then you answered the question. I really enjoyed this video. Now I do believe that I can do a cut out if I ever need to do so. Would love to see you and Jeff do more videos together. You 2 are my faves! The boys were delightful but I noticed their absence once you started pulling down comb. Love to see youngsters get interested in bees. I had my youngest take a kid’s bee keeping class when she was 11. Unfortunately, she has shown zero interest in the 6 hives in our backyard since then. You can lead a horse to water....
hey bud! nice removal as always. FYI to help knock down wind noise, install a small bandaid over the mic. take care
Have to try that. Thanks
thanks for sharing
Thank you Brenda. Hope your week is wonderful. Keep those kids under control. :)
thanks for the entertainment. When I want to hide from the kids for a few minutes I like to watch your videos.
thank you for recording this. have a good time
Thanks for watching smokeydops.
It's gotta be tough to fly when you have the dirt rooster droppin honey all on your wings.
Grounded instantly!
I love your videos
Watching you prepare the comb for mounting was so cool. Not something you usually show.
Hope it helps someone.
Awesome. Thanks for the upload!
Oh crap! Thought you were behind me for a minute. ;)
I heard that song on the radio in the beginning! :D It's one of my favorites. :) 'Tween that and the music you put in yourself, seems like you've got a good and varied music taste like I do; there ain't a whole lot that I don't care for! Oh and... Cheese don't last too long 'round THIS house, either! :P
I love music. All my videos would be full of music if not for copyright laws. :)
lmfao... nacho smoke ! yo' boy jeff trippin me out with the flow hive veil.
Ha! I know. I almost blurred it our for the video. lol
Nice job....
Thanks Bobby. We try. lol
big nest hope you find the queen
We lost her somehow. They made a whole bunch of queen cells.
just subbed jeffs channel as well
DriveShaft Drew Thanks Drew. I know he appreciates it.
nice hive when I bo my cutouts I have string on one side that way I can lay the cone in it and and then pot rubber bands on
That works. I used to use chicken wire.
On trap out I don't use screen I use a PVC pipe got a one way door in it they can come out but they can't go back in they go into the box and I can't get out of the Box got feeder and cone in the Box
"Don't you forget about" the Taco Bell Nacho Chips. "No, No, No, No". I always loved Don't you by Simple Minds!
One of my all time favorite bands.
great job both of you guys if I wanted to start doing bee removal Is there any thing I need to no or need to get like insurance or just go for it lol
Just go for it. ;)
Pray you are doing well brother in Christ. I didnt realize that you had another job till the last video
Oh yeah! I stay busy.
Thanks for making another video with Jeff but why is he the only one wearing a bee Vail and gloves? Always looking forward to seeing them.
He doesn't like working them without it.
found your channel from Jeff's. You guys make quite the pair! It seems like you guys have different focuses. Jeff seems focused on the honey for production and you use it to give back to the bees. What's your main focus with the bees?
Really enjoy the videos though. Thanks for putting them up! You've got a new subscriber.
My main focus is having a good time and not turning this into a hassle instead of a hobby. :)
628DirtRooster good word!
That was pretty right there
Keep up the great vids
Working on another one now.
I always thought Jeff went by the nickname of Mr. Ed? For the longest time I believed Jeff/Ed’s channel was taken over by him, or it was in tribute, finding out Mr. Ed was his nickname, was unexpected.
I am attracted to burning nachos. :-D
Surprised you didn't show up.
:-D >.< :-D
Could you give me an idea about how prevalent varoa mite and hive beetles are in the feral hives you remove? I've been watching quite a few of your removal videos, but can't remember you mentioning these hives are infested with one or another pest that is commonly found in beeyards.
Thx a lot.
Steven
They have both mites and beetles to some extent but usually when we get calls to come get bee colonies they are healthy enough hives that they are scaring people so they don't usually have much problems. The healthier hives keep pests under control pretty well.
just so good
Thanks :)
So much honey! * starts drooling *
almost 3 gallons.
looks like you have two beekeepers in training
There were sure interested enough.
Kind of curious as to what is built on top of those stilts? Are they houses built in a flood prone area?
Yes, near the beach where tidal surge washes houses away sometimes during hurricanes.
I miss my bees! :) Nice video.
I'm surprised they didn't make it.
Tony are you gonna try this coming spring with a new hive ? if so I may be able to help you out with a nuc after I do some splits.
Yes, I am in the process of trying to find a new place to keep them closer so I will not have what happen, happen again. What part of the country are you in? Thanks!
I am in the Dalton Ga I maybe able to help you out if you want it. I can find you somewhere to put them if you give me an idea of the area you are looking for. I can help ya on the hive part if mine do good through the winter and I can do some splits early. Can promise but we can try
I am in Chattanooga and will be building a hopefully better :) top bar hive this winter for the spring. I learned somethings I think and I think I had to much space for them to try to defend so I am going to try to keep bee space all a round but not allow so much room on the bottom this time. I think the wax moths had too many places to hide :) I actually beat the hive beetles but the wax moths surprised me. I was hoping to find a place closer than last time which was about 20 miles away down past Flintstone. This time I was thinking a little north of me maybe in soddy-daisy. I'll keep in touch even if the splits do not work out. I can get a Nuc from Pigeon Mountain if you run short and I will be happy to pay you for the nuc if you have one instead of them :)
Those bees must be craving tacos by now lol
And a large Dr Pepper.
I can send you a chart of where you can drill holes in those wood "I" joists :) Basically in the middle but not more than a 3" hole.
Didn't even think of that. Had a 2" bit in the truck.
Am I the only one who got nervous when he took the knife to the comb, I was silently urging the bees to move out of the way lol .
:)
I'll have a beef burrito supreme and 2 crunchy tacos.
You mentioned not finding the queen. Do you think she was left behind with some of the workers? Or did they all make it to the box?
We may have left her. I talked with the guy who lives there this morning and he said there are about 75 bees hanging out. Most everyone made it to the box though.
Yea you'll catch him, on video!
Probably so.
thanks dude!
Any time
Oh gee. You drop the smoker (or Mr Ed did) and the kid goes running over saying "I got it" and I am shouting at the screen, watch out, its HOT!" I'm not NORMALLY an airhead, but there you go. I did like the nacho smoker though! You two have me laughing most of the time! Thanks for sharing!
That kid loved that smoker. LOL
Of COURSE he did! He's young and its interesting and his mama does not approve him playing with fire! Triple threat!
LOL
I thought the same thing! Lol
So is it a sure-thing? Nacho smoke. For Tex-Mex bees. Should keep 'em from runnin' for the border. Nice work, as always. Who says you can't have any fun while you're takin' care of business?
If you really want to seal the deal play mariachi music while you work. It's all about having a good time. :)
Be careful don't never treat a hive as a piñata cause you'll hurt more for your reward.
Don Challenger If I ever do I'll be sure and wear the thick blind fold.
3:47 -- Smoking bees with nachos ?! Maybe you'll start a new trend -- smokin' 'em out with artisanal breads seasoned with rosemary and garlic-flavored oil. (They are, after all, ITALIAN honey bees.)
BTW, this was one of the few cut-outs where you weren't soaked with sweat.
Yes huray!
I've been so excited for this!!!
loves me some nachos! and bees!
The snack dujour.
Sure looked like some well mannered bees did you ever find the queen or is that a part 2..
We didn't find her. The hive started making queen cells two days later.
I love watching your videos. We need all the bees we can breed. I know no one wants to live with bees but will bees really hurt the structure of a house?
Given enough time they will usually find their way inside especially if they are in a wall. They also attract other pests. You can see the roaches scatter when Jeff opens this one.
Were there mites already in those hives? Do the bees bring the mites from where they harvest the pollen and water and such? Or are they come by by mingling with bees that are already infested?
Don Challenger They pick up mites like we do ticks. Likely from foraging on the same plants as other bees with mites. I didn't see any in this hive. We have very little problems with mites down here.
Hey DirtRooser, have you ever used plastic frames? What are your thoughts on stuff like that? I just figure it may be easier to clean compared to the wooden ones.
We have used plastic frames. I prefer wood. The grooves in the end bars are easy safe spots for beetles that the bees cant really do much about.
OK the first time I saw this I really did not understand the tactics of the Nacho Smoker. You got the bees hungry, didn't you? Without knowing what nachos even are, those bees got a good whiff of it and WANTED NACHOS. Of course, we know it would not have been good bee food. But the bees were caught - and then (without ever seeing a nacho) they went back to good bee food. Nice trick!
will smoke work on all flying insects ? i have a huge yellow jacket nest that have burrowed into the back of my trailer. And those guys are freaking aggressive.
I have smoked yellow jackets and they do respond.
Randy what are the dimensions of your 3 frame nuc boxes I have seen in previous videos? want to build some for spring looks like they would be just as good as 5 frames when establishing a new colony with grafted queens. Your thoughts on that.
We still use them for mating nucs so I have nothing negative to say about them. The inside dimensions are 9 3/4 deep, 4 3/4 wide. The length is going to be the same as any Langstroth box with the ledge for the top bar rest.
628DirtRooster thank you sir
Any time my friend. :)
Runnen Reb Y'all didn't get affected by the hurricane I hope.
no we are good in the northern part just some wind
about time lol. thanks for the subliminal taco munchies hint.
You are so welcome. Don't forget the cinnabon delights.
would the Bee-Vac made any difference here? I've seen you use one in past extractions but also seen you do without.
It would have gone faster and saved a trip but it stresses the bees a little more.
How many times did you get stung doing this on that day?
Eight or ten times.
