    Let me just say I've watched a BUNCH of your videos and I've got my kids watching them too! My 5yo brought a bee to me the other day... he was carrying it around on his hand like a pet, lol. Thank you so much for having clean videos without constant foul language. Just good, downhome, family safe videos. Much appreciated!

    My daddy (a retired entomologist) was a bee keeper for many years, but before I came along in the family (he was near 40 when I came along!). You are a gentle man, Dirt Rooster! I love watching you do your work, and interacting with people, but most of all, the education you give is impressive. I love bees, and Idk if I’d ever be able to keep bees, but I sure enjoying living the bee life vicariously thru your videos. Say hi to your wife for me cuz she’s a sweetie!

    Totally agree with you on the comments about 8 frame hives. I am only using 8 Frame medium hives. All the same frame means everything is interchangeable. The weight is wonderful for me to handle, and I am a 60 year old woman (not exactly small at 5'10" lol) in pretty good health. I committed to the 8 frame size so that even if I am not feeling my best I can still lug a full box around if need be.

      I don't have a fear of them even though I'm deathly allergic to all their bites. Any spider in my house is dead meat. Black/Brown Widows and Brown Recluse are dead inside or outside. I have been known to take pictures of them before I execute them. My sister, mum, and step-dad never understood my fascination with them when they were all afraid of them.

    When I was a small boy walking to school in Southern California, I past by a house with a back door with screen door and small roofed stair to the sidewalk. Right in the middle, covering the entire entrance was a huge perfect radial orb web and right in its center was a massive (even bigger than the spider in this video) white, yellow, and gold spider. I had never seen such a thing in my life at the time, though I have seen some since. It was beautiful! I do not really have a fear of spiders, but large ones inside my house I do not like, most especially black widows.

    8 frame boxes have not been the best choice for the hard winters we have near the canadian border. I don't know why, but side by side the 10 frame hive overwinter much better. The vast majority of my hive boxes are 8 frame. Thinking about changing over to a large brood box on bottom, and using 10 frame honey supers for brood boxes the rest of the way up. Thank you for all you do for us.

    HOLD MOTHER OF GOD! I’ve never seen a spider than big in my life! Guess that’s what happens when you live in Washington; nothing grows that big...except for me, that is! LOL! I think if I saw my husband using my wrapping paper - my (EXPENSIVE!) wrapping paper - for a drip cloth...ooohhh...he better hide! LOL! Much love, Shelbie =)💚🎃👻💜

    Love the Ceracell gear, even if it is made by our cousins across the ditch😁🤭. I have been switching over to their frames and not had any extractor blowouts. I have the top feeders but not needed to use them yet but I am sure the day will come.

    I haven't had much trouble with beetles, except for a weak nuc. Bought some Guardian Hive Entrances to try out this next spring 😊

    That was definitely a large female of the Golden Orb Weaver family, named for the yellow tint to their silk and the shape/style of their webs. Most likely _Nephila clavipes;_ scary-looking but harmless to humans, and the ones you have down there only live about a year. The males are teeny, a bare fraction of the female's size.
    The top drawer coming off was a near perfect separation; nice one! I hope they get over the beetles and do well by you~

    Thanks for that, my right arm ain't what it used to be after the accident so an 8-frame box might be what I needed.
    Also in the FWIW That's a Female Golden Silkweb Spider, (Nephila Clavipes) the males only get to be about the size of a quarter. As for their venom, well let's just say size matters. Their venom is less painful than a bee's venom but she would give you a lot more of it. Luckily she only bites people when they get her caught between their clothes and body or a similar situation. And on top of that she is almost completely blind despite having 8 eyes so she depends on her webs to feel her way around. Thanks for not squishing her. I know she eats bees but she would probably prefer larger flying insects to the bees.

    I was taught as a little girl here in Nebraska to leave the big, spiders alone, they are the GOOD ones. They kill the much smaller and dangerous ones. So yep, leave them be, God did not put them here by accident. Happy BEE Wrangling. That's a good looking end table hive!!. God Bless.

      Jumping spiders are known for eating other spiders too. Though generally male jumping spiders get themselves eaten, trying to find a mate.

    I was thinking the same reduce reuse recycle, or you can post it on craigslist "FREE nightstand" works great, slightly used.
    Or if you have frames that could fit that you could use it like that.

    Hey Rooster I'm a professional woodworker and I myself would not use PolyShades for exterior applications. I would start with a simple oil based stain, topped with a thinned down oil based clear coat. Do not build up more than two coats. You thin 10% to 15% the top coat for penetration and addhearance.

    • @628DirtRooster
      @628DirtRooster  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I guess I could top coat the PolyShades since it's already on?

    • @MrFishone777
      @MrFishone777 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@628DirtRooster this one is good for now. Just remember that Poly means plastic, might crack over time.
      If you use something like Minwax Urathane, or Marine Varnish they are a little softer and more durable.

      yea Urethane is much better. You want ultimate protection go to your local marine. Finishes for boats will last for decades, but they are pricey. Hmmm wonder if anyone ever made hives out of Teak?

    There’s something very cool you can do with that spider besides kill it lol. Find a nice piece of plywood and varnish or paint it. Then get a contrasting color or spray paint then shoo the spider off the web. Then mist the web with the paint and put the plywood up on the web. It makes a truly beautiful work of art and it don’t hurt the spider. Just try it lol.

    I just love your video's so thanks and I am truly amazed that you're not getting stung up. I only have to open one of my hives in particular and they are coming at me straight off the bat. They are not super aggressive, more annoying than anything and I am not keen to replace the queen. Any tips besides the obvious? Cheers from Australia :)

    I work with warré hives. They are 8 frames and quite small. I prefer them a lot over the simplex hives most people around here (belgium) work with. But you do make a good point that you need to stay on top of them. It is surprising how fast they build out two eight frame warré boxes.
