I came across this tune when i saw Vanilla Sky in the theater all those years back. I was at the right place in my life for that movie, as well as the soundtrack to have an effect on me. One note, a song from that movie thats not on the soundtrack that eluded me forever that i found was Rez by Underworld. Took about 20 years to find it!

Down and out in my twenties in Las Vegas, Dylan cleared my vision with his poetry. I bought a Dylan best of CD in the bin of a Best Buy clearance. after I listened to it, I knew then why he is such a big deal. Bar none the most influential musician of his time. Love his music, and am happy not many people get it.

O M So you fondly imagine you're one of an insightful minority that "gets it"? Dream on. Plenty of people "get it". How do you imagine he achieved and maintains his position of pre-eminence - despite his bloody awful recent performances? By "recent" I mean, at least, the last 20 years.

Mike Williams, The guy is 77 years old and still creating meaningful music. So fuck off with your bloody awful recent performances comment. At least he performs live with no auto tune and lip sync garbage. The guy has been performing live for going on 60 years for crying out loud. No one would disagree that his live performances are on the weak side but then again most people understand that Bob Dylan is old, smoked for close to 50 years before he quit and still is able to maintain a fan base that keeps him going and still inspires people. Bob Dylan was never known for great live performances but then again neither were the Beatles. He also was never thought of by most as a great singer or even a good singer which added to his uniqueness. You claim you "Get it" but you really don't.

      @marmadukescarlet7791 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Bruce Hauge: but he can sing! I’ve had singing lessons and he has all the technique of a good singer. He just has his own style. That’s supposed to be a good thing these days, although it was shocking when he first arrived on the scene. Although someone like Joan Baez has a beautiful voice, bob is so much more interesting to listen to, even changing his tone and timber for different songs or even the same song at different times. As for his live performances, a lot of the sound quality is terrible. Some of the performances with better sound quality are magical.

What's funny is that this song is meant as a reply to John taking from Dylan originally. Hence the last cryptic line. It wasn't any serious animosity though. But The Beatles started shifting into "Dylan style" music in 65. So Dylan says screw it, takes one of John's songs and makes it his own. Personally, I consider them to very, very different songs, just with a similar melody. Much like a lot of Memphis blues songs have a similar foundation.

When I was in college, I lived 2 blocks away from Lennon before he and Yoko were robbed and moved to the Dakota. My sense of all of this is that everyone is making this far more complicated than it really was. Dylan, the Beatles, the Kinks, the Yardbirds.... all the folk musicians... all the Mercy Sound bands were doing their thing at the same time in the 60s.
None of them sat down to write and said to him or herself, "hey, I am going to steal someone's song.". They were all influencing each other. It was inescapable. They also helped one another. David Crosby was the one who suggested to George Harrison that he study with Ravi Shankar.
Dylan and Lennon certainly knew each other. There infamous stoned London cab ride has been well documented. (I think it would have been hillarious just to sit in the cab with the two of them and listen to the conversation.)
There was no animosity among them. They were all on the bumpy ride that was the journey of the 60s. I remember it well, the Filmore East and the Electric Circus.... Walking down St. Mark's Place... The smell of incense, head shops, and the chants of dealers plying their goodies... "Acid and grass, acid and grass.... Owsley." (Of course very little if any of Owsley's product made it to the East coast but who could prove otherwise. It was not FDA approved in pharmaceutical grade packaging!)

I would like to share a funny comment I came across relating to 4th time around being a parody to Norwegian wood 😂
"She" at the start of song refers to Lennon. Lennon says to Dylan "your lyrics doesn't make any sense, they are just lies". In response Dylan says "you don't understand them because you are deaf".
When Dylan is about to leave Lennon 's place, Lennon says you got something from me inturn you must give something back. Dylan gets some tip on popular music from Lennon and in return Lennon is expecting something(tunes) from him.
Dylan hums some tunes, playing Lennon's guitar(drum) from the room, and asks Lennon How do you like these tunes?. Lennon in response ends the conversation, prepares to leave(suit and shoes referring to Beatles uniform) saying "Don't get so cute".
Dylan pushes his boundaries(forced my hands in pocket) to give him his best and the last piece of tune(gum) he had and hands over to Lennon (the finest tune)
Lennon used one of Dylan's tune, out of many that he had hummed to him, that tune(she) topped the charts and threw Dylan down the charts(dirt) forcing him to share space with every other artists(everyone walked).
Dylan becomes aware that he had forgotten his shirt (many other tunes) at Lennon's place. He goes back to get them(reclaim the ownership-to ensure that Lennon doesn't record rest of his remaining tunes).
In the hallway of Lennon's place Dylan sees a picture of Lennon in a wheelchair (from Help) and tries to make sense.
Dylan asks for copyright (asked for some) for the tune (the gum previously given), the tune that Lennon already has released (Rum) with his own version of lyrics.
Lennon screams in anger, Dylan tries to calm him down and get his tunes back.
Dylan gets out of Lennon's place and takes along with him, his unreleased tunes (filled up my shoes). Without any delay Dylan gives them to his record company, they absolutely love it and records and releases those tunes before Beatles releases them, without wasting any time.
Dylan only took some popular music tip from Lennon (And I, I never took much) but Lennon tries to copy Dylan's style. Dylan gives a warning to Lennon. I never copied your style so you don't copy mine (I never asked for your crutch, and don't ask for mine)
Overall the title "Fourth time around" suggests something that has already happened 3 times before and has happened again for the fourth time.
Dylan wanted to take ownership of “Norwegian Wood” in his own way. He did this by writing and recording a song called “4th Time Around.”

    Mais il a gagné.
Ne nous somme toujours pas des chats.
    Et se cultive le chagrin.
Je n ai jamais autant pleurer un train.
Ne connaissait pas se sentiment d extrême solitude.
Comme un astre errant sans lune.

    • @zeroceiling
      @zeroceiling 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Alexander Wurl ...Alexander...of course every piece of music is subjective....that is a stunning revelation of the obvious.
....art...as they say...is in the eye of the beholder.....and indeed...I do like Norwegian Wood....and absolutely realize that I cannot make
anyone who doesnt care for it to suddenly love it......
Look at Barnes & Noble....and the tens of thousands of books and authors.....clearly not everyone has the same taste....or the same interest...,or we might just as well have only one book for all......wait...that’s actually been done during the inquisition...
There are only a few musicians that can actually be discussed subjectively....based on some level of passion and reason...and of those...the most likely is Johan Sebastian Bach...where his compositions follow some very specific mathematical constructs which
do produce what some would call correct...and measurable sonic effects....
That being said...the rest of it is completely subjective...and accounts largely for why some love the Beatles...Dylan..James Taylor....etc..etc..
I mean..do I love the Eagles because of their music...or more because they were the soundtrack of my life as I drove out from Detroit to LA...where I had a great time and became someone else...met my wife..etc.
Is that subjective?...Do I smile every time I hear “Take it Easy”?...damn right.....is it the best music ever written?...who the hell knows..
Wait..I dont think we’re arguing this point....we appear to be in agreement..

      @Theimbennn 7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

The lyric "I didn't ask for your crutch now don't ask for mine" was a direct response to the Beatles song Norwegian wood. Lennon was a jealous guy I'm sure he was jealous that bob and George Harrison became good friends in the 70's. lennon was obsessed about Dylan in 1970 he released a song called god where lennon lists a lot of things he doesn't believe in Jesus ,elvis and no surprise Dylan. When Dylan went through his born again Christian period lennon did a parody version of gotta serve somebody and Lennono despised Dylan for turning to god. On Dylan's 2012 album tempest he wrote the song roll on john which is believed to be a song about lennon.

    Bob Dylan
    4th Time Around Lyrics
    [Verse 1]
    When she said
“Don’t waste your words, they’re just lies”
    I cried she was deaf
And she worked on my face until breaking my eyes
And said, “What else you got left?”
Yeah, it was then that I got up to leave
    But she said, “Don’t forget
    Everybody must give something back
    For something they get”
    Verse 2]
    I stood there and hummed
I tapped on her drum I asked her "How come?"
    And she buttoned her boot
    And straightened her suit
Then she said, “Don’t get cute”
So I forced my hands in my pockets
    And felt with my thumbs
    And gallantly handed her
My very last piece of gum
    [Verse 3]
    She threw me outside
I stood in the dirt where everyone walked
    And after finding out I’d
    Forgotten my shirt
    I went back and knocked
I waited in the hallway, she went to get it
And I tried to make sense
Out of that picture of you in your wheelchair
    That leaned up against
    [Verse 4]
    Her Jamaican rum
And when she did come, I asked her for some
    She said, “No, dear”
I said, “Your words aren’t clear
You’d better spit out your gum”
She screamed 'til her face got so red
Then she fell on the floor
And I covered her up and then
Thought I’d go look through her drawer.
    Verse 5]
    And when I was through
    I filled up my shoe
    And brought it to you
And you, you took me in
    You loved me then
    You never wasted time
And I, I never took much
I never asked for your crutch
    Now don’t ask for mine

Have a read at Revolution In The Head, and the dealings and inspirations that Dylan and the Beatles had on each other. It makes sense having read that. Dylan had a huge influence on The Beatles, Lennon especially, but Dylan's later electric phase might have some connection with him meeting them too. All fair enough, however true or not these theories may be.

The long harmonica-intro tells you that´s not Dylans own song,.. Bob is pissed over that The Butlers had copied his sound so it was payback time to Lennon.

  • @ardalla535
    @ardalla535 6 ปีที่แล้ว

This was a reply to Lennon's 'Norwegian Wood'. John disguised the lyrics so Cindy wouldn't wouldn't suspect he was cheating on her with Yoko. Dylan thought that was funny, and he was doing the same thing with Sara, so he wrote this. Dylan also tossed in an obscure line about "You and your wheelchair that leaned up against her Jamaican rum." Who is the 'you'? John, of course. The Beatles had just been in the Bahamas doing "Help," and the media was all over it with photos and hype. Dylan also thought that was funny as hell. Elizabeth Anderson ...complete truth.....and to think...this was Dylan's 1966 piece....Norwegian Wood was written and done in 1965.....
Not sure what he was thinking with this number...and as usual..a blaring out of place harmonica signalling the end of the song.

Interesting... To me Lennon's NW is a song about feminisms, about powerful women coming up in the 60s. And Dylan's answer is about crazy women and horrible men haha.

He wrote this as a parody to John Lennon's Norwegian Wood. He disliked John Lennon so much. But The Beatles had so much respect for Bob. Dont know why? Just a poet with a guitar and a very annoying harmonica in my opinion. Wrote some great lyrics and some great songs but God he's sooooooooo boring 🤷

Well, at least John had a real reason to be jealous! Always pissin' and moanin' about Paul, dissing George, bashing Mr Zimmerman. And look at his old lady... sheesh, John, 'zat the best you could do? Oh, that's right, you did have a pretty once, Cynthia was her name but she had your kid, so she was so Yesterday. Tell the boy Jules, "Imagine no possessions, it's easy, now don't you cry, I won't leave you a damn thing when I die..." And you didn't believe in Beatles or Jesus. How's praying to Yoko working out? Get you out of hell yet? What a wasted life.
'Tis a pity about Johnny Boy though, every time he opened his pie-hole the last decade of his life, all that came out were these bizarre, unhinged rants about everyone. That and the majority of the horseshit he recorded that he called music. Always rippin' on Paul about 'silly love songs' - at least he finally recorded one of his own on the final album even if it was about the talentless lynchpin he brought in to Abbey Road studios to break up the Fab Four because he didn't have the balls to do it himself! He was too much of a coward and a hypocrite. All this talk of love and peace and his rage against God and humanity. What a wanker!

Paul It's not that easy. There are a lot of factors to making great songs. Having an original voice, clever melody, lyrical imagery people can relate to, in Bob's case a huge platform to share from, and also having your song's character stand out which is what Dylan does so well.
