Only played 37 times , so I was lucky to capture this during a brilliant show , which was unexpected, given that it was performed in a large tent albeit on the docks of the Mersey river in Liverpool.
    Fourth Time Around
    WRITTEN BY: BOB DYLAN
    When she said
“Don’t waste your words, they’re just lies”
    I cried she was deaf
And she worked on my face until breaking my eyes
Then said, “What else you got left?”
It was then that I got up to leave
    But she said, “Don’t forget
    Everybody must give something back
    For something they get”
    I stood there and hummed
I tapped on her drum and asked her how come
    And she buttoned her boot
    And straightened her suit
Then she said, “Don’t get cute”
So I forced my hands in my pockets
    And felt with my thumbs
    And gallantly handed her
My very last piece of gum
    She threw me outside
I stood in the dirt where ev’ryone walked
    And after finding I’d
    Forgotten my shirt
    I went back and knocked
I waited in the hallway, she went to get it
And I tried to make sense
Out of that picture of you in your wheelchair
    That leaned up against . . .
    Her Jamaican rum
And when she did come, I asked her for some
    She said, “No, dear”
I said, “Your words aren’t clear
You’d better spit out your gum”
She screamed till her face got so red
Then she fell on the floor
And I covered her up and then
Thought I’d go look through her drawer
    And when I was through
    I filled up my shoe
    And brought it to you
And you, you took me in
    You loved me then
    You didn’t waste time
And I, I never took much
I never asked for your crutch
    Now don’t ask for mine

I have never understood why this song isn't more lauded or why Dylan himself has performed it so rarely down the years. It's a real gem with a beautiful melody.

I love it, but it’s probably because it’s a knowing send-up of Norwegian Wood?

@@prangbroI believe bob had actually had this recorded on a demo and played it to John before john himself wrote Norwegian wood.

July 12, 200l. July 12, my father's birthday. He passed a few years after 200l. He was an honorable, hard-working man. I loved ❤️ both of my parents dearly and appreciated all they did for me, including instilling a work ethic.

Over all these decades I only found this beauty -- the melody is mezmorizing... great thanks for the lyrics, which I find just after having read about the not short sequence of Bobbies relationships. This Fourth Time Around balms my soul... Coz... I had such ... blood pressured fuz, about The Crutch :-) While I was guiding her in a gentle mans walz.. thanks you for uploading!

Fifteen years before this I moved to Liverpool. July 86. Great city. More pubs than anywhere else in UK. Worked 80+ hours a week. Had a lot of fun. Two songs stood out then where I went to different pubs to listen to on the jukeboxes - Freddy Fender’s Wasted Days and Patti Smith’s Because The Night. Only time I sang in pubs. Lock-ins and then started work again with no sleep. Stayed there that Christmas and moved to London in January 87

It's magic because Bob has you and everyone else on the hook. He plays with our imagination . And I must say I really love it, because he does it on a high level. It's an invitation to dance with him with a walse, but is it really a walse? It sounds like 3/4 but do you know it exactly. it's 4 time around and you get dizzy. This song never get old, this is poetic pur and circles and circles and fire our imagination.. and Mr Woolhall this video is poetic too it draws in the spell

This was believed to be Dylan’s mockery of Lennon’s “Norwegian Wood” song. He believed Lennons song to be farcical.

  • @paulmancini-sb9qn
    @paulmancini-sb9qn ปีที่แล้ว +1

Bob would say this inspired John Lennon’s “Norwegian Wood” and Lennon would say “NW” inspired Dylan to write this tune .. both came out around the same time way back in 1965 but the entire Beatles 1965 Album “Rubber Soul” was indeed very inspired by Dylan’s more introspective and acoustic tunes …

Think at this date I was wasting away in Glasgow having ditched a boring Glaswegian Protestant with an equally boring name. I’d finished my job and was just lolling about wondrin what to do/where to go next. Was writing some stuff unpaid. Wallowing in both poverty and freedom.

  • @Sherrie275
    @Sherrie275 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Bob’s original that the Beatles morphed into Norwegian Wood. Why take when you do fine with your own resources? I still find this reasonably unsettling. I know John loved Bob, but…come on. Thank you for allowing to share “the real deal”. Yes, imitation is the highest form of flattery. Somehow what happened after Bob wrote this appears a significant infringement on creative and artistic license.

    • @tomtrapmore3993
      @tomtrapmore3993 ปีที่แล้ว

It was the other way around, the Beatles wrote Norwegian wood first but it was heavily influenced by Dylan, fourth time around was recorded a year later and is supposedly a response to Norwegian wood
