JBL 230 NC vs Nothing Ear 1 Review | Call Demo & Sound Tested | The Best TWS Earphones Under 6000!

  • This was a tricky one. I've enjoyed using the Nothing Ear 1 for about 9 months now which also means I need to do a long term review on it. Having used it this long, part of me hasn't wanted to listen to anything better in its price range because it checks all the boxes for me.
    Cue the JBL Tune 230 NC that a lot of my viewers asked me to review and my option on the Nothing Ear 1 started to change ever so slightly, until I heard these two models back to back.
    No doubt theres a clear difference between the two when its comes to their design but the difference don't stop there. It carries onto their features or there lack of. But then the JBL decides to show itself off when it comes to its sound and performs like a seasoned artist on stage making the new comer shaky in the knees.
    It was a real pleasure doing this comparison which I think has somehow made this review of mine the longest one yet. I've tried to keep it as tight as possible and I hope it helps anyone watching this make an informed decision.
    I'm leaving the chapters below so you can skip to the section you'd like to.

    👍🙏 *Watching your videos* I am understanding the terms like *sound stage* and *audio profiles* and I understood it even more when I moved up from the Basic *Noise Mini, Playgo Buds, slightly up to OnePlus Buds Z* and now a slightly still better Oppo Enco Air2 Pro...
    Spending 10-12 mins on The Equaliser ( _My OnePlus 7 has a Basic Dolby Atmos_ ) I keep trying on different selected Movie Titles, scrolling Between _chosen_ scenes to Make the *Bass as Deep and Low feeling* and Treble as clear and Without The Vocals losing out....COZ MY USAGE IS PRIMARILY VIDEOS and MOVIES ONLY.
    I try hard that My OnePlus Buds Z and even Noise Mini starts sounding like the Oppo Enco ( well almost as much as I can, considering the driver limitations)
    *Thanks for being around and spreading so much knowledge....* 🙏 Which (I thought) I had lost along the way.

    This was a very nice review. Absolute worthwhile of 24mins. You effortlessly converted Sound experience to words. Thats what I appreciate the most. I already use JBL C100TWS which are very basic compared to what you showcased. They lack NC while taking calls and intrusion of Ambient noise has been the major complaint of the people from other side. So I need to upgrade. But when it comes to music reproduction, I tested them against AirPod Pros and surprisingly, the sound stage of Apple Musics Spatial Audio sounded far better on the JBL's Its absolutely encompassing and highly immersive. So apart from Good Audio reproduction, whatever I would get on the JBL's, will be a Welcome bonus for me. Thank you again for this in-depth review.

    • @DiabloTempest
      @DiabloTempest ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep c100 sound is unmatched how is your experience with JBL 230nc if you brought please share.
      Right now i am using Sony xm5
      These have great separation but sometimes I miss the JBL bass it is so perfect. Sony lacks bass at higher volume i hate that the most.

    • @JayanandSupali
      @JayanandSupali ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DiabloTempest I got myself 130nc as I didn't want the stick design. I was expecting them to be designed and fit being on par with C100, absolute ease to fit into the Ear. Sadly they aren't. Getting then fit into the Ear is a struggle and I would not recommend 130nc purely for this reason. The sound quality is good. Bass is far better and deeper than C100.
      The NC is decent. Its not as strong as Airpods which is a good thing for me as Airpods NC gave me a slight headache.
      All in all, i think 230NC should be better to go for as I feel they would fit in the Ear with ease. If the fit is not good then the sound quality goes down. Skip 130NC.

    The JBL earbuds worked fine for the first few months, but within nine months of purchase, the left earbud stopped working completely. It did not produce any sound or connect to my phone.
    I visited customer service center twice for the same issue, but I did not get any proper resolution or assistance. I was given vague and unsatisfactory answers saying that cleaning the earbuds with a toothpick or tweezers would solve the issue. When I asked if this was the suggestion given in the manual and whether I would not be held liable for any damage to the product caused due to this, for which the service center told me that I need to keep on visiting them if there is any issue and they can only clean the earbuds and give them back to me and there is no other alternative.
    Wow, JBL ear buds are amazing, and the service offered is fabulous and the explanation given by the service center technician is just out of the world. I just love going to the customer center every other day to get them cleaned. It's like having a car that needs constant oil changes instead of earphones.

      On call the ENC is activated but the JBL tends to cut off its ANC when it detects a call. Let's hope someone chimes in here to help answer that question.

    Hey Paul ,
    I bought the nothing ear 1 seeing your reviews on it .
    I am facing an issue there . I updated the firmware but the problem is when I connect it with my laptop , there is a music pause of 3-4 secs ( although video plays ) around every minute of video play !! That's really annoying for me & I asked for a replacement, even the replaced product works similarly !! In phone , I didn't notice it much . Any probable solutions or should I return the product ?

    • @PaulsPOV
      @PaulsPOV  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The Nothings are known to have connectivity issues. Majority of people, me included have a 1 second drop off in connection maybe once every one or two hours. It's a big improvement from the 1 second cut off every 10-15 mins. But that was before the latest update. If you're facing such a huge loss in connection they may not be worth holding onto Asish. I'm willing to tolerate the one second cut off but 4-5 seconds is a bit too long. Sadly Nothing hasn't been able to figure this issue out still. You might want to consider buying into another brand.

    Hey Paul, kudos to another great review and comparison video. I purchased the Nothing ear (1) a while ago, and am experiencing the occasional 1-second gap/break issue while listening to music. I think you mentioned a similar bug in one of your previous videos. I did got the earbuds replaced via flipkart, but am facing the same issue again with my replacement Nothing buds again. Do you think there is a possible fix to this issue?

    • @PaulsPOV
      @PaulsPOV  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Resets don't sort this out or replacements. Infact the few of us who only have the one second drop off have it good. Some other people are facing major glitches with their touch control and ANC switching modes. I've come to live with it because a one second drop off is a faily minor glitch. It is a first generation product after all so its bound to have one or two issues. If you're willing to live with it, it makes sense to keep it. Some folk have returned their product and bought into other brands.

    I've used JBL 130 nc before and I've faced slight connectivity issues and faced 1 second break issue many times and the loudness was too low for me that I always have to keep it on 90% minimum(with laptop)
    So does 230 nc tackle these problems?

    • @PaulsPOV
      @PaulsPOV  ปีที่แล้ว

      I havent tested the 130 NC, but if they are soft sounding like the Oppo enco air 2 pro and Realme Buds Air 3 then the 230NC doesn't sound as soft as them.

      Thanks for the reply!
      "230nc doesn't sound as soft as them" meaning are they slightly better in loudness to them or are they sufficiently more louder than them?
      I'm stressing on this because I've observed that I got addicted to some loudness as I've been using wired earphones until now with my laptop so it is one of the top priority things for me
      Just needed clarity on this
      And I finally decided to go either with JBL tune 230nc or OnePlus buds pro
      What would you suggest?

    • @PaulsPOV
      @PaulsPOV  ปีที่แล้ว

      The JBL 230 NC are louder than the models I mentioned. They have better amping compared to those.
      I havent tested the oneplus buds pro so wouldn't want to give you any wrong information.
      Wired earphones can hold higher volumes. They at 25% is equivalent to some TWS earphones at 65%. It can vary. I myself am not a fan of loudness so I stay away from those levels of volume.

    Listening to your Sound review, I am tempted to try the JBL out.
    One more thing which I like about JBL, that it is pretty good during the voice call, even though Nothing had almost 99% background noise subdued, yet *to all the environmental background sounds, JBL was doing a natural justice...*
    While Letting in at least 'some' transparency flow through, and at the same time keeping your voice much more clear and realistic on the JBL.
    ( JBL call quality, was in my personal opinion, much better sounding at the other end of the phone during a call I must say.)
    I suppose, I am already making up my mind *not to go for OnePlus Buds Z2* ...and preferred spending more on JBL...
    Was sceptical about the Bass ( that background *suspenseful* bass sound on Netflix subtitles when the Villian is planning something Sinister)

      Try reducing the volume all the way down with the gesture controls, then do the same from your phone. If that doesn't work, try increasing the volume all the way with gestures then then same from your phone. See if it boots better. Sometimes, there's a mismatch, and earphones can play softer. I never go above 60% volume with these. They get way too loud for me.

    • @PaulsPOV
      @PaulsPOV  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      ANC on call with the JBL is turned off automatically. The JBL is supposed to have 4mics per earbud and Nothing 3mics per earbud. But the manufacturers usually don't disclose how many they have per bud. Both brands appear to have 3 cut outs per earbud when I look at them.

    • @PaulsPOV
      @PaulsPOV  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's what I'm saying. It has three cut outs and no brand specifies how many microphones they have per bud. I think the JBL most likely has only 2 mics per earbud, making it 4 in total but seems to do a pretty good job with its ENC despite that. Likewise, Nothing only specifies that it has "3 hybrid microphones" they don't say they have 6. I think they have two primary microphones on one bud and a third works on the other to pick up noises. Manufacturers have been very quiet about how they handle this, even when I connect with them they never elaborate on the specifications.

    • @PaulsPOV
      @PaulsPOV  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Of all the TWS earphones I've used, the JBL seems to have the best battery life. Keep in mind cell degeneration happens over time so post 9months of use, TWS earphones usually start losing their usage times. Using them for upto 3yrs, there is obviously no guarantee any set if electronics will last you as long as that but in some cases people have used their earphones for close to that amount of time without many issues, its rare though.
      The JBL is alright in terms of build quality, it won't break apart easily. Only in terms of its finished look I feel it could have been made to look a bit better.
      Its sound performance is the best I've heard out of all the earphones I've tested. When it comes to Dolby, the JBL doesn't support them natively, so when you activate it on your phone you will get a more spatial sound but it may not be as good as a set of earphones that support it.
      Worthwhile waiting for the sale!

      I havent tested the Jabras so wouldn't be able to comment on them. Yes I understand the conflict about the build and sound between these two modles. Both are well put together and would unlikely fall apart anytime soon. But the one thing you need to keep in mind with the Nothings is that they do have a connectivity issue which Nothing has yet to resolve. The JBLs have worked flawlessly with me so far except for the slight glitches with the app. When it comes to the sound, I do prefer the JBLs over the Nothings. It seems you'll have to see which is more a priority to you between the two things you mentioned... the looks or the sound.
