Even though oddly Sam Elliott looked a lot like the real life Morgan instead of Virgil. They couldn't have cast a better Ike Clanton. He looks like a freakish doppelgänger.
Exactly, and that's why Kevin Costner's "Wyat Earp" sucked. Everyone cast, except for Madsen as Bat just didn't look or act the part at all. Watching Tombstone is probably the closet we'll get to being a fly on the wall.
Tombstone is one of those movies that only comes around once in a life time... perfect cast, perfect script, perfect performances. Just an all around fantastic film.
It’s very rare for a film to be cast so damn perfectly. Even the supporting cast outside of “The Gang” was spot-on! Just an outstandingly well cast and directed film.
So much respect for Kurt who basically had to direct the movie once the original director got fired/ quit. He was able to finish a really difficult movie shoot and make it into a modern classic

Mitchum…who was in frail health got injuried and couldn’t ride. He instead did the voice over for the opening scene. It would have been cool to see him one last time on screen

From the very first scene "Thats not what he said you ignorent wretch, your Spanish is worse than your English". The whole exchange with Holliday in Latin, lmao in the theater he says "I already did it" when Curly Bill asks him what he would do in Faust's position. I think Johnny Ringo is the 2nd best role/ performance, after Kilmer.
It's the one scene that stuck with me when I watched Tombstone as kid. The whole movie is amazing but that scene was my favorite. I haven't watched Tombstone since then but I'm almost desperate to rewatch it again! Can't find it anywhere though
Because Ringo being educated, did not have to become a thuggish cowboy gunfighter and killer, he had choices, and chose an evil path. This is evident in the opening scene.
That lateral spin Biehn does really sold it! I've seen people twirl guns in westerns before, but that flat lateral spin and fan that he was doing in the film was something I didn't even know you could DO. Twirling a gun and shooting a gun aren't the same thing, but the idea that Ringo could spontaneously whip out a twirling routine with a loaded gun and never drop it, have it fire, or slip in the slightest definitely gave him this aura of awesome! Biehn is always going to be one of my favorite guys due to the films he was in, and his routine here helped sell the finale in a BIG WAY. The better your villains look, the more outstanding the heroes look when they beat him!
@@sugarnads Depends on whether the gun is single-action or double-action; a double-action revolver is cocked and then fired by pulling the trigger once. Probably pretty hard to accidentally cock and fire a gun just by spinning tho, since double-action guns have a very heavy trigger pull.
This man single handingly is responsible for making me watch tombstone over and over again, I've lost count but I would say 50+ times,not usually a western film fan but this is absolutely EPIC!!!!!
Kinda hated the way Kurt Russell portrayed Wyatt Earp. Just hammed it up. More brooding menacing type behavior is my way of thinking.But what do I know. Maybe Wyatt did over act in tumbstone arizona. Just seemed cheesy. To me. And slapping around Billy bob didn't cut it with me. Mr Thornton would have done a better job as Wyatt Earp. Just my 2cents. Also just to expound upon my earlier statement lots of real Texans in that room.why that should matter hell I don't know. But it just seems to. Texans are a differant type. More of a quiet professional. Lots of real bad asses in Texas.
Michael Biehn is a childhood hero of mine, and I finally got to meet him in 2016. He brings this unspoken level of cool to every one of his roles. Also a very laid-back, easy-going guy.
The best gun twirling I've ever seen in any movie, period. The psychotic look in his eyes as he does it too, just adds to the intensity. Fantastic work.
I'm not sure when the line "He reminds me of,...me!" was written into the script, but casting Val and Michael was pure genius, because they are mirror images of each other in this film. I believe they both would have given the characters the same intensity and style had Val been given the role of Johnny, and Michael been cast as Holliday. Brilliant work by both actors at the height of their careers.
Tombstone is my second favorite western after Unforgiven, and only by a hair. I love both movies so much. Val Kilmer's acting in Tombstone is untouchable. And Michael Biehn knocked it way out of the park as Johnny Ringo. Val Kilmer and Michael Biehn's chemistry in this movie was absolutely phenomenal.
"Wyatt Earp" was more biographical than "Tombstone." I liked them both. I agree that Kilmer stole Tombstone and should have won an Oscar. All actors in Tombstone deserved an oscar. Excellent movie.

What's so awesome about Doc's cup spinning is that it was the quintessential way to make a mockery of Johnny Ringo's gun spinning routine. Leave it to Doc to come up with a way to show someone up against tremendous odds. Very awesome!

So many great performances in Kurt Russell; Powers Boothe (God rest his soul); Michael Biehn; Stephen Lang (very underrated); the always great cowboy himself, Sam Elliot; and best of all, Val Kilmer, who was robbed of an Oscar. You also wouldn't be amiss to argue that there were probably more than one Oscar snub from Tombstone. Maybe not a popular opinion, but I think if the movie had better direction and it flowed a little better, it would have received more recognition. The editing wasn't very good IMO, it was choppy at times, and the ending seemed a little rushed with the montage scenes a little iffy. But the writing and the acting is what made this western probably the most iconic and the most memorable. It's one I can watch over and over and over again, I think I have the entire script memorized.
As a critic, I have to agree. They could have tightened up the editing (i.e. removed/pared down some scenes). As a fan though, I just can't get enough of the acting and characters and wouldn't mind if the movie went on for another hour.
Roger Ebert said he felt the studio didn’t have enough confidence in the movie and practically snuck it into theaters. Because of that, Ebert thinks that Val Kilmer was robbed of an Oscar nomination.

Michael should be proud of the gun spinning routine. It's like a circus performer nailing a performance. One of the most memorable scenes in movie history. Also let's not forget the response from Val's Doc Holiday with a tin cup. Beautiful to watch, hats off to both actors.
So much fun the film Tombstone. Many fantastic actors we've known and loved and yes, Val CRUSHED the Doc Holiday role but I TOTALLY take my hat off to Michael Biehn. He brought a real gunslinger to life and was a VERY believable character and it would NEVER have been as great without 'em. Thanks, Michael-for Tombstone, Terminator, and so many more.
Just pure, utter brilliance! Not much else needed to be said about the film, acting, how it’s written, staged, performed, encapsulated, etc. I saw it in the theater and probably 200 times since then. It will live on forever - just like Wyatt Earp and his immortals!
Biehn's reactions are just perfect, absolutely sells the Johnny Ringo character as authentic, just a wonderful acting performance. The perfect adversary for Doc Holliday.
In that scene, when Doc is mimicking Ringo’s moves, that is when he realizes he has met his match, despite being a lunger. He almost copies him move for move with the cup. Great scene. Amazing movie

If you pay attention to Val's roles, he does the coin-over-fingers dexterity skill training a lot. Like in Real Genius. Or the pen flip in Top Gun. High level dexterity.
Not to diminish Val, but it just takes a lot of practice. You can achieve any feat of dexterity as well. When my son was a baby, I taught myself to juggle and finger flick cards from the deck to my opposite hand in about 2 or 3 weeks. I'm not boasting, just hoping to encourage someone to learn something they wish they could do!
@@DSGreen I learned to do the coin trick by watching Real Genius. I taught myself how to do the card flip from one hand to the other while sitting in a hospital bed for a few weeks. I learned how to do the water drop sound from Ferris Bueller's Day Off. But Val does it really fast and smooth. Like it's nothing. Some people are more dextrous than others.
More than the gun spinning skills, what amazes me is actors who are capable of morphing so deeply into their characters. Michael Biehn and Val Kilmer are 2 of them.
That absolutely kills me about the cup. I was thinking about Biehn kind of scoffing at "did you already know how to do this?" because Val came into the movie knowing how to do that coin roll, that over-the-knuckles-and-through-the-woods routine he does when Doc is first introduced. Well, there's some other flick of his where his character is rolling quarters over both hands simultaneously; you know he came in with the spirit the question asker is first describing here: "hey! Look what I can do!" So the fact that he just had that cup with him everywhere on set is hysterical. He felt he needed to sharpen up some of his legerdemain as well haha
Michael did a really great job as Ringo. Thell by the way, is a Legendary Holster maker. He was also a member of the Southwestern pistol league that included Jeff Cooper, Jack Weaver, Ray Chapman and Others, True Legends.
Michael Biehn absolutely crushed this role. I learned to mimic his routine and gained such a great respect for his ability and just the sheer cool factor of it. What he says about getting the routine correct 1 out of 10 times is so true. One little deviation to the momentum of how you’re twirling and the movement can just send the gun flying. I’m glad he threw in the tid bit about Val spinning the cup on set for hours. It’s the only way he could have convincingly done the routine with a tin cup. Spinning a gun is hard. Spinning a non-gun item in the way someone spins a gun is just baffling. What an amazing film.
In the old West it would have been a tin cup, but the one in Val's hand is pewter, it's about 3x the weight, MUCH easier to twirl. (The solid flat bottom is the giveaway) How do I know ? I've got a pewter tankard of exactly the same design and it's VERY heavy.
People had no idea at the time, how special Tombstone was. I know, I saw it back then in the theaters. In fact I must have snuck in after like 4 times, after paying to see it.
Michael did a great job with that part and seemed perfect for it but because of that scene I feel no one paid attention to the great acting of Kurt just with his expressions as it took great experience to tell the story with just his expression and his eyes. I love this movie so much I have picked it apart a million times and it gets better each time. Thanks for showing the clip at the end of Michael's tutorial as it makes it so much more pertinent. Of course the dumb ass academy robbed Val of an Oscar~!!!
I worked in the Prop Department on Tombstone and got to see Michael do it live in front of the camera. I so wish the Director and Editors kept it as one take without cutting away to reactions of others. He was so good at it.
As soon as the MC started to elude to the scene, Biehn started to flick the microphone.... Watch it. That's a second nature muscle memory. Movie will be in the history books forever!
These guys could really act the shit out of anyone. Val was awesome. Kurt never pulled the Star of the Movie bulls..t. He is a real down to earth guy and didn't mind these scene stealing actors showing their stuff.
Except for getting the original director fired and replaced, and then getting the story changed to fit Kurt's own narrative. I think Kurt Russell is great, but he did pull his movie star strings.

Walking my way home from work, I get to the corner of my road, I’d always get my keys out and twirl the key loop I have attached, around and around, with a final flick to get the actual key to my fingers to stick it into the lock once I reach my door... I’ve had the loop around for 14yrs, started the day I got it. Only after watching this, do recall why I started doing it ...it’s the damn ‘Cup Scene’ I’m trying to reenact ☝🏼😆
I find it utterly baffling that Val Kilmer didn't even get nominated for best supporting actor for his role as Doc. I mean, he pulled off being one part wasted and one part sicker than a dog, the like i've never seen before or since. not to mention all his brilliantly delivered lines and facial expressions, he was a scene-stealer. Micahel was fantastic as well, in fact he was easily the next best part of that movie, and that's saying somethin - cuz curly Bill was brilliant as well. easily the most underrated western ever made, and Val's acting in it was easily the best of any western i've ever seen. Val is such an underrated actor in general, between this film or his roles in "The Doors," "The Ghost and The Darkness," "Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang," and "Heat" were all phenomenal as well.

Michael Biehn's performance in Tombstone was absolutely captivating. "Okay lunger - let's do it!"
So many great performances in Kurt Russell; Powers Boothe (God rest his soul); Michael Biehn; Stephen Lang (very underrated); the always great cowboy himself, Sam Elliot; and best of all, Val Kilmer, who was robbed of an Oscar. You also wouldn't be amiss to argue that there were probably more than one Oscar snub from Tombstone. Maybe not a popular opinion, but I think if the movie had better direction and it flowed a little better, it would have received more recognition. The editing wasn't very good IMO, it was choppy at times, and the ending seemed a little rushed with the montage scenes a little iffy. But the writing and the acting is what made this western probably the most iconic and the most memorable. It's one I can watch over and over and over again, I think I have the entire script memorized.
As a critic, I have to agree. They could have tightened up the editing (i.e. removed/pared down some scenes). As a fan though, I just can't get enough of the acting and characters and wouldn't mind if the movie went on for another hour.
Roger Ebert said he felt the studio didn’t have enough confidence in the movie and practically snuck it into theaters. Because of that, Ebert thinks that Val Kilmer was robbed of an Oscar nomination.

I still use that line today and people look at me like I'm making an insult, but really just looking for opportune moments to use that line.

Michael should be proud of the gun spinning routine. It's like a circus performer nailing a performance. One of the most memorable scenes in movie history. Also let's not forget the response from Val's Doc Holiday with a tin cup. Beautiful to watch, hats off to both actors.
I could watch that cup flipping around sequence 15 times and not stop laughing once.

So much fun the film Tombstone. Many fantastic actors we've known and loved and yes, Val CRUSHED the Doc Holiday role but I TOTALLY take my hat off to Michael Biehn. He brought a real gunslinger to life and was a VERY believable character and it would NEVER have been as great without 'em. Thanks, Michael-for Tombstone, Terminator, and so many more.

Biehn's reactions are just perfect, absolutely sells the Johnny Ringo character as authentic, just a wonderful acting performance. The perfect adversary for Doc Holliday.
That one line, "Smells like something died" was the most cold blooded in the whole movie!
In that scene, when Doc is mimicking Ringo’s moves, that is when he realizes he has met his match, despite being a lunger. He almost copies him move for move with the cup. Great scene. Amazing movie

If you pay attention to Val's roles, he does the coin-over-fingers dexterity skill training a lot. Like in Real Genius. Or the pen flip in Top Gun. High level dexterity.
Not to diminish Val, but it just takes a lot of practice. You can achieve any feat of dexterity as well. When my son was a baby, I taught myself to juggle and finger flick cards from the deck to my opposite hand in about 2 or 3 weeks. I'm not boasting, just hoping to encourage someone to learn something they wish they could do!
@@DSGreen I learned to do the coin trick by watching Real Genius. I taught myself how to do the card flip from one hand to the other while sitting in a hospital bed for a few weeks. I learned how to do the water drop sound from Ferris Bueller's Day Off.
But Val does it really fast and smooth. Like it's nothing. Some people are more dextrous than others.

More than the gun spinning skills, what amazes me is actors who are capable of morphing so deeply into their characters. Michael Biehn and Val Kilmer are 2 of them.

That absolutely kills me about the cup. I was thinking about Biehn kind of scoffing at "did you already know how to do this?" because Val came into the movie knowing how to do that coin roll, that over-the-knuckles-and-through-the-woods routine he does when Doc is first introduced. Well, there's some other flick of his where his character is rolling quarters over both hands simultaneously; you know he came in with the spirit the question asker is first describing here: "hey! Look what I can do!"
So the fact that he just had that cup with him everywhere on set is hysterical. He felt he needed to sharpen up some of his legerdemain as well haha

Michael did a really great job as Ringo. Thell by the way, is a Legendary Holster maker. He was also a member of the Southwestern pistol league that included Jeff Cooper, Jack Weaver, Ray Chapman and Others, True Legends.
Michael Biehn absolutely crushed this role. I learned to mimic his routine and gained such a great respect for his ability and just the sheer cool factor of it.
What he says about getting the routine correct 1 out of 10 times is so true. One little deviation to the momentum of how you’re twirling and the movement can just send the gun flying.
I’m glad he threw in the tid bit about Val spinning the cup on set for hours. It’s the only way he could have convincingly done the routine with a tin cup. Spinning a gun is hard. Spinning a non-gun item in the way someone spins a gun is just baffling. What an amazing film.
In the old West it would have been a tin cup, but the one in Val's hand is pewter, it's about 3x the weight, MUCH easier to twirl. (The solid flat bottom is the giveaway)
How do I know ? I've got a pewter tankard of exactly the same design and it's VERY heavy.

People had no idea at the time, how special Tombstone was. I know, I saw it back then in the theaters. In fact I must have snuck in after like 4 times, after paying to see it.
Michael did a great job with that part and seemed perfect for it but because of that scene I feel no one paid attention to the great acting of Kurt just with his expressions as it took great experience to tell the story with just his expression and his eyes. I love this movie so much I have picked it apart a million times and it gets better each time. Thanks for showing the clip at the end of Michael's tutorial as it makes it so much more pertinent. Of course the dumb ass academy robbed Val of an Oscar~!!!

I worked in the Prop Department on Tombstone and got to see Michael do it live in front of the camera. I so wish the Director and Editors kept it as one take without cutting away to reactions of others. He was so good at it.

Kurt never pulled the Star of the Movie bulls..t. He is a real down to earth guy and didn't mind these scene stealing actors showing their stuff.
Except for getting the original director fired and replaced, and then getting the story changed to fit Kurt's own narrative. I think Kurt Russell is great, but he did pull his movie star strings.

I love that in this scene Doc makes Johnny out to be a fool. Reminds me of the scene in Game of Thrones where Ned tells Jaime he doesn’t compete in tournaments, preferring to show what he can do on the battlefield where it counts

One of my most fave movie of all time. I'ved always enjoyed watching "Tombstone" over and over again.
Walking my way home from work, I get to the corner of my road, I’d always get my keys out and twirl the key loop I have attached, around and around, with a final flick to get the actual key to my fingers to stick it into the lock once I reach my door... I’ve had the loop around for 14yrs, started the day I got it. Only after watching this, do recall why I started doing it ...it’s the damn ‘Cup Scene’ I’m trying to reenact ☝🏼😆

I find it utterly baffling that Val Kilmer didn't even get nominated for best supporting actor for his role as Doc. I mean, he pulled off being one part wasted and one part sicker than a dog, the like i've never seen before or since. not to mention all his brilliantly delivered lines and facial expressions, he was a scene-stealer. Micahel was fantastic as well, in fact he was easily the next best part of that movie, and that's saying somethin - cuz curly Bill was brilliant as well. easily the most underrated western ever made, and Val's acting in it was easily the best of any western i've ever seen. Val is such an underrated actor in general, between this film or his roles in "The Doors," "The Ghost and The Darkness," "Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang," and "Heat" were all phenomenal as well.
Agreed. Except for Tombstone being underrated. It isn't. Everyone I know say that it's either their favorite western or one of the best ever. I love it.
