About the interior cloth, I remember watching an interview with Frank Stephenson, the designer of this car. It had to do with lightness and uniqueness. Leather would have been heavier, and bare plastic was just unacceptable for such a car, of course. If I remember correctly, he said that he happend to stumble upon this particular fabric while visiting various suppliers in search of something suitable, he liked it and they bought the entire stock. It wasn't specced as "fake carbon", or made especially for Maserati.
I remember this line from a movie "The number 1 rule of Italian driving: What is behind me is not important" -- he must have owned a Maserati supercar. Thank you Doug for showcasing a rarity indeed

I've been waiting for this Christmas Gift Video from Doug! I was lucky enough to drive one of these on the German Autobahn with the Owner (an older Collector from Munich) on the Passenger Seat, this thing sound like a WW2 Airplane dive bombing at around 300km/h (186mph). Here in the Alps we have yearly Events where all Super and Hypercar Owners of the "Supercar Owners Circle" come to an old Swiss Airfield and race their Cars and also tour them on nice Roads through the German, Swiss, French, Italian and Austrian Alps, this always includes TWO Maserati MC12 as well as several Pagani Zonda, Pretty much every Koenigsegg & Bugatti, Lamborghinis from all Generations, Mercedes.Benz McLaren Stirling Moss etc. For those curious to see them among many other Cars that only collect Dust in Garages of other Collectors, there must be plenty of Videos on TH-cam if you search for "Supercar Owners Circle Event". Thanks for this detailed Tour Doug, and if you ever get to Germany, you'll definitely get a lot of Cars to review! Prost & Cheers from the Bavarian Alps
Thank you Doug for putting in the metric system as subs. It’s such a small detail but I was really easy to follow all of the cars dimensions. That Volvo was a nice little touch as well
Fun fact about the MC12 driver's seat and pedals - they were all custom made for each owner at the purchase order. The future owners were pushed into substance (similar to those used in the process of making braces) and the seat as well as pedals were then formed to fit only the one owner. Making it basically hard to buy one second hand. (Colleague of mine is dating a son of an owner of the MC12 haha)

They had a custom sprayed black one at Goodwood Festival of Speed, which was tuned to near 800bhp, which was direct from Maserati. The sound was unbelievable as it raced up the hill at around 150mph. Never cared much for them before seeing this one, won over is an instant
I saw this car in a speed magazine that my dad got back in 2005. I fell in love with it as my #1 dream car, I'm glad you got to drive it, and confirm it's 100% worth driving. I don't think it would be dailyable without some help (Lift kit to clear stuff more easily). I'll have to make due with my 2016 corvette for now.
What an amazing car. I used to work at Maserati and got to sit on the 00 model (didn't drive though) which they had in R&D and it was an experience i will never ever forget
I saw one of these in the flesh back in 2008 when I was in Prague. It was driving down a narrow cobbled street in the old town looking amazingly out of place. It’s such a wide car!
In my youth, I was on holiday in the south of France near Cannes and one of these appears on the road, I just went crazy ! To see this thing moving and it was new at the time, it was so glorious and epic ! I had the time to take one picture on my terrible photo camera, I still have this picture today, but man the only one I saw in my life was this one and will be the last, because of the rarity I guess ... I'm watching this channel since the early days and I'm so happy to finally having a video of this car ! Proud of you Doug ! Greetings from Switzerland
The carbon fibre cloth (if I remember) was an advanced material that was rejected by the fashion industry for being too expensive. I also remember in the UK on fifth gear, a guy who owned one took it inexplicably for a track day in the snow and crashed it - I still remember being so annoyed at him!
back in 2014 I saw an mc12 on a flatbed which was one of the first times if not the first that I’ve seen one of these multi-million dollar “hypercars” and all I can remember is the amount of car that was just hanging off the back of this truck and how wide the wing was. One of my all time favourite cars
The "carbon fiber cloth" came from the shoe industry. It's a nice durable fabric that was used on a TON of sneakers throughout the late 80's and most notably the 90's. Used on many Jordan models.
Saw this at the Minneapolis auto show in my very early teens and was in awe of the car. It was the most exotic vehicle I had ever seen in person at that age.
I remember watching this on Top Gear many years ago, it set a lap time of 1:18.9 and beat the Ferrari Enzo, I remember specifically the sound it made as it went through the follow through, funny how I remember that specific moment so well, maybe because I was 8-9 years old and thought it was the coolest thing ever
On a track, it will beat anything of that era. It has ridiculous downforce and very little drag for how big it is. People forget that this thing went racing basically stock: slick tires, an engine tune and a worse aerodynamic kit to respect the rules of the GT championship, and won five championships in a row (both driver and team). It's ridiculously fast.
Thank you (especially the owner) for taking the time to go into details about this car, because as you said, there isn't much historical video record of it or about it. Those that know, know, but still appreciate it, and those that don't, are in for a treat.

Hey Doug, it’s been a minute since a dropped a comment. Honestly I was a bit ambivalent when this video popped into my feed, but man what a surprise. Your review here was, to put it simply, joyous! I don’t want to mention how many years I’ve been watching your channel, but I will say this was hands down one of my favorite reviews. Big 👍🏻👍🏻
this is still one of my all time favorite car designs. i love the early 2000s designs that are retromodern because it looks like a classic le mans racer
I'm curious to know what you call mentality of early 2000? Because current supercars are full of huge "aero" features and electronic tech, way more than before, mostly for cars that will never drive on other roads than big cities ones, and this is mainly why I don't care at all about current supercars.
@@TURST67 He's talking about how 2000s supercars were still raw enough to deliver a fantastic driving experience but still modern enough to have great performance without being loaded down with tech and excess features. I'm with you, the newest supercars are all about chasing numbers and being flashy. Anyone can get in and drive a new Ferrari fast. An MC12 requires skill to not crash and rewards that skill greatly.
@@Sticktothemodels indeed, i wish i was born in the 80’s so i could experience the early 2000’s in my twenties. Being in your twenties is awesome regardless and i am happy to be in my 20’s right now but around 30-20 years ago it would’ve been much better
Doug thank you for making these essay quality reviews. So many of these cars have never been seen on the road and/or are far out of reach. It's great fun for us car nerds to learn more about automotive models! All the best!
Doug, thank for your outstanding review of the Magnificent Maserati MC12. I fell in love with this car the instant I saw the three-quarter view of it looking into the camera. What a stunning body design. Long and sensuous, built for speed and low and angry at the same time. The exquisite white and blue paint design belied a racing royalty lineage that extends to today. What a magnificent car. What a magnificent engine. I wish you were allowed to drive it on a track so you could go through, at least, three gears, at almost full throttle. What beautiful music she makes. Bizarrely, one of the true quirks of this car on the racetrack was that, at over 200 mph going on a long downhill straight portion of track, these cars liked to allow air under the front of the car and they would explode off the track and fly a hundred feet in the air doing somersaults as they went. I don't think any driver ever died but it was impressive to say the least. The MC12 was modified to stop that for obvious reasons. The MC12 is a track car. Although you were allowed to drive this massively rare, beautiful car, the long overhang front end and the long overhang rear end do not survive in a real world street setting well even with the life feature on the car. Even this rare Maserati shows damage to the bottom of the carbon fiber fins on the diffuser at the rear of the car. This is likely trailering damage. This car is so damn long, trying to get it on a trailer that has any kind of ramp is nearly impossible without rubbing the bottom of those rear fins. So, she is a very particular car. Built to excel on the track and defeat all competition. And she is one of the most beautiful, most impractical cars ever made. Thank you, Maserati, for crafting the Masterpiece called the MC12.
What a beautiful car! I consider myself fortunate to have seen an MC12 Corsa driven in anger around the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course a few years ago at the SVRA event at IMS (and up close in Gasoline Alley). Hearing it scream down the front straight at full voice and echo through the hallowed grandstands is truly a cherished memory.
I’ve always loved this car - from an era when Maserati (along with Lancia my two favourite marques) fell short of expectations it was the super-stylish outlier, far more attractive than the Enzo. Wonderful stuff Doug, thanks for sharing with petrolheads the world over.
Weirdly, I've seen quite a few of these. There used to be a big Italian concorso event in the Poconos in Pennsylvania, and every year a few MC12s would show up. Then, I went to a place in Orlando that had two of them. Initially, Maserati planned to only make 25 MC12s, but demand was high and so they decided to make one more production run the following year. It's still much rarer and cooler than the Enzo Ferrari and acts as a kind of sequel to the F50 (targa top especially).
We really need to appreciate the lack of ads here! Doug seem to earn enough with cars&bids that he doensnt need to bother us with ads in his videos which is not usual these times!!
Even the paint is amazing on that thing... That pearl white is still one of my favorite whites ever put on a car, the way it catches the light makes it sooo beautiful in my opinion.
It's vids like this that keep me coming back to this channel. No one else does this stuff. Every new car from Porsche, Ferrari etc has a hundred video reviews. Only Doug does this stuff. Ps: the BMW 850 in the background is very cool too!

Another car that Doug said that he REALLY wanted to review back in March 2021. Also, one of my favorite supercars of all time. I honestly prefer the MC12 than it's brother, the Ferrari Enzo, BTW
What I love about Doug is that he is so immersed in the coolness of the rare cars themselves, he is basically unaware that he is the one driving those cool cars. It's like, "Look at how cool this car I'm driving is!" instead of "Look at the cool car I'm driving!" 😎
It's so satisfying to see Doug get his hands on reviewing on of these icons. It was pn his list to review, looks like Santa keeps on delivering. Merry/Happy Christmas everyone.
One of my favorite cars ever to this day. I still remember in the early days of TH-cam there was a guy that took delivery of one, immediately drove it in the snow and slid and smacked the back into something, did some damage and continued to drive it, that was a truly wealthy man. There's a guy out by me with an MC20 in the same spec and it is gorgeous.
This is why I love Doug he has and does the best video's on TH-cam regarding automotive knowledge and history!!!! Love all your work brother keep up the great job!!!!!
If I'd have to guess, the headlights don't have covers so it's easier for race teams to install the yellow headlight covers required for gt teams at le mans to differentiate between gt cars and the prototypes. Those run white headlights. Absolutely vital for endurance racing at night by headlight.
I remember seeing this car on the street. I couldn’t identify it but saw from the distance that it must be a Maserati because I could get a glimpse of the hood badge. When I googled it I was super excited to see that it is so rare.
The "upside-down" orientation of the door handle makes sense given how the door opens, but what is indeed strange is how the handle is installed on a horizontal, rather than vertical, plain. Congrats to Maserati for firmly abiding by the body design on the exterior for the doors.
My wife used to work a few doors down from ferrari of silcon valley. The owner had one in the showroom for years. I’d pass by it almost everyday picking up my wife. Even went inside and saw it a couple of time. Never really appreciated how rare it was. I always knew it was the cousin of the enzo (which was also at the dealership) but not street legal in the US.
I was so excited to see that you reviewed this car! The first die-cast model car I ever had was an mc12 and since that day I have thought it was the most incredible car, from its looks to performance and everything in between!

I remember seeing this on the cover of the DuPont Registry back in high school. Had to pick it up. I hadn’t seen many examples of Maseratis at that time as they were just about to drop the Quattroporte. The MC-12 was beautiful from end to end. Excited about this review since it previewed in some of the intros of the past reviews. Great job Doug 👌🏾. Appreciate seeing this decades later.

You’re the best, Doug. Especially when reviewing a car that you’re really excited about and enjoying. This thing is great, Maserati was like “we need to make 50 for the road? Ok, sure…”.
I had the great pleasure of seeing this car in person back in 2006 in New Orleans!! It's incredibly large and the paint is insane! why they didn't put glass over the headlamps I will never know
I am guessing because of the "Glass" then having to be tested and certified to (expensive) lightning regulations, something they probably didnt wish to pay for with a production run of 50 cars. Most low volume cars use lights from other cars, like the famous Nissan 300ZX headlights on the Lamborghini Diablo for example.
Thanks Doug, from this review, I thought that never in my life would I be able to see a video of this automotive jewel, for me it is the most beautiful car ever created, You're a Rockstar buddy!

Nice car, and nice review! Love those 2000s style rims! One interesting thing you can quite hear at 30:20 is the staggered / kinda digital sounding acceleration. You can literally hear the engine jumping in steps to higher revs...
Absolute grail right here. This and the F40 are two of the best looking hyper exotics that have aged so beautifully, and still look modern by today's standards.
Only Maserati I’d ever want to own. It’s such a legend. It held the production car record at the Nürburgring for a few years, if I remember right? Like a decently respectable time even by today’s standard. It’s pretty sick.

Thank you Doug for putting in the metric system as subs. It’s such a small detail but I was really easy to follow all of the cars dimensions.
That Volvo was a nice little touch as well
It's nice, but really it's the imperial units which should be in subs since they're completely useless and unscientific.
Everyone else started doing it after him
I love it too

Doug, the kind of guy who drives like a boy who just got the best present ever, but still evaluates like a grown up. Great stuff to watch!

I've seen a black one (supposedly factory color) outside Chicago.

The carbon fibre cloth (if I remember) was an advanced material that was rejected by the fashion industry for being too expensive. I also remember in the UK on fifth gear, a guy who owned one took it inexplicably for a track day in the snow and crashed it - I still remember being so annoyed at him!

i had a book as a kid in 04-06 era that showed supercars and cool cars and this was one of them...loved it ever since
back in 2014 I saw an mc12 on a flatbed which was one of the first times if not the first that I’ve seen one of these multi-million dollar “hypercars” and all I can remember is the amount of car that was just hanging off the back of this truck and how wide the wing was. One of my all time favourite cars
Wow they had an MC12 on an open trailer. That car deserves only to be in an enclosed trailer, it’s just too special for anything to happen to it
@@xCkillaxC I totally agree, I have pictures of it somewhere, the only reason I would see it being on an open flat bed would be because it broke down.
The "carbon fiber cloth" came from the shoe industry. It's a nice durable fabric that was used on a TON of sneakers throughout the late 80's and most notably the 90's. Used on many Jordan models.
Wasn’t aware of that. Thanks for sharing. It looks very similar to the center sections on the carbon fiber seats in my Scud.
That fabric totally reminds me of a Chevy Cruze. Horrible comparison, but it also has a veery similar fabric on the dash lmao
I have some Timberlands from early 00s with what looks like this cloth.
My grandmother drives a 2009 Fiat Punto and it has the same fabric on the door cards in a blue colour

I don’t want to mention how many years I’ve been watching your channel, but I will say this was hands down one of my favorite reviews. Big 👍🏻👍🏻
Cool that the Race version of the MC12 DID have the covers over the lights. Makes sense for a bit more aero efficiency.
this is still one of my all time favorite car designs. i love the early 2000s designs that are retromodern because it looks like a classic le mans racer
Designed by Frank Stephenson who has a TH-cam channel
This car is pure craziness, perfectly mirroring the mentality of early 2000’s people and I absolutely love it.
Wish I could own one in this lifetime
I'm curious to know what you call mentality of early 2000?
Because current supercars are full of huge "aero" features and electronic tech, way more than before, mostly for cars that will never drive on other roads than big cities ones, and this is mainly why I don't care at all about current supercars.
2000’s was truly the peak of modern human culture. Sports, cars, music… everything except fashion was on point

I love these old supercars. I wish we could see some prototypes too. I remember building models of them as a kid.
Finally! The MC12 review is here!
let's hope to see a CLK GTR in the future

What a beautiful car! I consider myself fortunate to have seen an MC12 Corsa driven in anger around the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course a few years ago at the SVRA event at IMS (and up close in Gasoline Alley). Hearing it scream down the front straight at full voice and echo through the hallowed grandstands is truly a cherished memory.
24:30 This quirk blew my mind. I remember when this car came on Top Gear, and I've always thought it had a clear plastic cover over the headlights.
Same here.
yea, doug was wondering about the aerodynamics etc, but then he showed a photo of race mc12 which had plastic covers over the headlights, lol.

One of my favorite cars ever to this day. I still remember in the early days of TH-cam there was a guy that took delivery of one, immediately drove it in the snow and slid and smacked the back into something, did some damage and continued to drive it, that was a truly wealthy man. If I'd have to guess, the headlights don't have covers so it's easier for race teams to install the yellow headlight covers required for gt teams at le mans to differentiate between gt cars and the prototypes. Those run white headlights. Absolutely vital for endurance racing at night by headlight.
unfortunately this never raced in Lemans 24, only Spa 24h, as a GT1
