You guys have to watch “10 Cloverfield Lane” next, it’s a trio that takes place in the same storyline but a lot of people don’t understand the connections until after the LAST film “The Cloverfield Paradox”. These three films are all amazing.
Did you watch until the end of the credits? There is a voiceover of a soldier calling out over the radio, "Target remains..." The nuke did NOTHING to stop the creature.
HUD’s name was referring to “Heads up Display”. T.J. Miller, the actor who plays HUD has spoken about the filming. There were a few scenes where they needed a professional camera man to step in (time constraints) but he shot over half of the film on a Panasonic AG-HSC1U, which is a handheld camcorder. Truly fits in one palm. They decided to let him do this to make it feel more real- and it worked.
As a gamer I feel slightly disappointed in myself that I didn't make that connection 😂 It's awesome the lengths they went to make this feel so grounded despite the insane scenario!
@@gmodfan53 I distinctly remember when this came out and it was UNIVERSALLY roasted, lmao. The shaky cam was way too shaky for most viewers. I thought it was... decent, at the time, and the shake didn't bother me much, but I was also 18 and didn't really know much about what I was watching. In retrospect, I can see what they were going for and why certain decisions were made, but I still think it's a pretty flawed movie. Not worthy of as much hate as it got, but flawed.
That’s sad this film didn’t get much attention fr. But I think the reason is that in 2008 “The dark knight”, “Iron man” and “Hancock” were released in cinemas. So found footage genre was obviously loosing to super heroes movies in popularity.
This movie blew everyone’s minds when it released, and a few years after that too. Like… it’s a great creature feature, but it very much had a lot of hype surrounding it in its day.
This was one of the top movie going experiences of my life. The sound design literally rocked the entire theatre during the initial explosion, shocking everyone
When they are running towards the subway and that stomp comes out of absolutely nowhere it almost blasted my headphones off my head 🤣 Some of the best sound design we've heard in a film of this genre!
This format and subject was pure trauma in the cinema, on that size screen, and from the front rows... ... Having sweated through my clothes, I think I almost pulled the arms off the cinema seat. I went with my brother, and after, he asked: "you ok? “ ..."no... No I am really not." Ordeal.
My nephew and I were in the front row center opening night, and the theater general manager came out and said "enjoy the best sound system in the state". The military street scene was wild. One of the best movie experiences
@@MIGHTYM4RSIt's very easy to miss unfortunately. I didn't catch it at first and after reading this comment I had to watch that part multiple times to see it.
Tied in with the viral marketing for the movie too pointing to satellite issues for the company Slusho that Rob was going to Japan to work for, implying the creature did come from space or was awoken by whatever was on the satellite when it crashed into the ocean.
@@joshluke5782 The creature created a weird flavour thing that was mined from the ocean depths were it was sleeping, the satellite ends up being the final nail in the coffin and it poked it too hard for unknown reasons and then it travels all the way up to NYC. The creature itself is not native to Earth, or not to that Earth, the cloverfield paradox confirms the creature is from a parallel Earth, this one is a baby so there's reason to believe it arrived alone from other Earth when the cloverfield paradox plot advanced, didn't even notice it had completely shifted universes because it was sleeping underground the ocean floor and Slusho by accident founds the substance and mines it, slowly but surely disturbing the creature, the last straw was the satellite crash, whatever signal it was sending disturbed the creature and it finally went into "waking up" mode, then it fully wakes, destroys the Slusho mining platform that looks like an Oil platform, rampages through the sea floor and kills a few boats while going haywire on the sea and finally arrives at NYC coast, were it goes fully confused as the land from this Earth doesn't resemble its natural habitat at all. And because the creature evolved to sustain absurd pressure from the sea floor and from the sky when a fully grown adult, most of the conventional weaponry couldn't really poke it. It is confirmed in the first movie by the director that the baby creature was indeed killed, they didn't use a nuke but rather a special bunker buster tactic that the US actually has but so far hasn't used or never used. Extremely heavy and penetrating ordinance carped bombing a large area, anything in that killzone has almost zero chance of survival. We can see a variation of these tactics in Shin Godzilla when they use the penetrating ordinance against Godzilla. A being whose body was practically nuke insulant elements. And it managed to penetrate it. Now imagina what it did to this thing that has zero caparace.
Nice! This movie is GODZILLA meets The Blair Witch Project. The idea of the movie came from JJ Abrams, who was in Japan and saw all these Godzilla toys and thought "What if we did our own Godzilla, but with a handheld camera and you're right there in the middle of this insane action sequence?" The creature, nicknamed Clover, is actually a juvenile, standing 250 ft tall, while the adults are 700-800 ft in height. Abrams said that he wanted the creature to be a stranger in a strange land and that it's in an unknown environment that it's not familiar with, which is one of the reasons why the military wants it destroyed. He even compared the creature to elephants going on a rampage, and even though they are gentle giants, they can attack you without warning, as well as trying to defend itself.
Such an awesome backstory to how he got the idea for this! We've been delving into all the lore that and work that went into this as well as the insane marketing strategy. So unique and fascinating! It's crazy that more films haven't done the same especially with the rise of social media.
the big monster in this movie is 92 meters (298 feet) tall and is a baby clover, the adult is more than 6.2 kilometers (20,341 feet) tall, it even surpasses the clouds
@@Nohraz the sequels aren't in the same universe.. Cloverfield, 10 Cloverfield Lane, & The Cloverfield paradox are all in their own universes running parallel to each other and the shockwave from the space particle accelerator in Paradox is what triggers the events in the first two movies.
@@Nohraz the thing that landed in the ocean was not the creature it’s in the lore. It was the Japanese company that dug into the ocean and disturbed the creatures satellite
"How did they mobilize so quickly?" There are marines and soldiers permanently stationed in NYC, it has it's own base effectively, and several large bases nearby.
Yeah especially after 911 I assume they have more precautions to make sure attack like this doesn't happen again or at least to be an immediate mobilization in big coastal cities. I bet a lot of changes were made since that day in terms of national defense/security and protocols. A lot of things went wrong in terms of army response and preventing it from happening on that day which after that would be rectified and anything closely resembling it will be taken very seriously. I know a lot of people believe in conspiracies that it was an inside job, it was planned etc. but in reality it was a lot more things going wrong and especially nobody even thinking such attack can happen on US continental soil and overconfidence. I think Andor summerises it perfectly: "they are so proud of themselves, they don't even care, they are so fat and satisfied they can't imagine it, that someone like me would ever get in their house, walk their floors, spit on their floor, take their gear". P.S. I'm not trying to offend Americans with this or say it in that context, I just think the US government overconfidence in their strength played a role in not being able to predict or prepare for such scenario until it happened. The only real threat the US had until that point was a major foreign power like USSR and nuclear attacks.
Keep in mind, when this came out it had been less than 10 years since 9/11. The initial attack scene was incredibly jarring for people who had watched the aftermath of the towers falling back in 2001.
Very true. I saw it in the theater in NY and there were a lot of people just shocked and upset. Some of the footage hit too close to home so soon for many at that time. I actually didn’t like this movie for that reason. However, watching it years later, being further removed from 9/11, I have an improved impression of this film.
A couple who are friends of mine were longtime New Yorks before they moved here to Toronto a few years after 9-11. One of them worked at a law firm in Brooklyn and went home.to their place (in Brooklyn) as soon as the attacks happened. (Even here in Toronto everyone was sent home from the office because, as one of the bosses said, no one was gonna pay any attention to work that day, not even himself.) His partner worked for a tech firm in downtown Manhattan and they had a meeting scheduled that morning with a client who was headquartered in the World Trade Ctr. As it happened he'd been undergoing radiation treatment for a type of cancer and his boss told him he was too sick to attend the meeting and that he didn't have to go. Sadly, his coworkers who did go died in the collapse. Fortunately, before the attacks happened he'd told his partner that he wasn't feeling well, that he didn't have to go to the meeting, and that he'd try to get off work early. So at least his partner knew he wasn't in the buildings as he'd been scheduled to be. But with all cell service down he didn't hear anything for hours til his partner made it home on foot. Turns out he was part of the multitude of dust-covered people crossing the Brooklyn Bridge on foot that day. So when I watched this in theaters I thought "OMG, how do the people who lived through 9-11 feel watching this??" Talk about PTSD-inducing. 😱
@@rohe1790Not really - Godzilla is a direct response to nuclear war, it was a statement. Cloverfield is just a direct response to Godzilla, not 9/11. Don't get me wrong, I love Cloverfield, saw it twice in the theatre - but its conception is purely out of entertainment and nowhere near as deep as Godzilla.
just brilliant how with minimized sound. they were successful in conveying the same horrific end for Hud, and did not have to show anything but left just that impression that i think everybody was left with.
I’m pretty sure it’s a satellite falling into the ocean which when it sunk awoke the creature, remember doing a lot of looking into about this film when I was younger
@@angelrosas2556 Speaking with SYFY, Reeves revealed that yes, the monster known as Cloverfield is in fact an extraterrestrial, with the final moments of the first movie showing its arrival on Earth. “When we revisit that footage where they're on the Ferris wheel at the end, you can see the meteor flying down and hitting the ocean." Yeah. It's the monster.
Huh, before this I'd always heard that the story revealed through all the "augmented reality game" gimmick marketing leading up to the movie's release had been about a hibernating creature on the sea floor with some company using a fake oil rig as a cover for their operation harvesting the creature's bodily fluids (or was it from the parasites?) and mixing it into a popular slushee drink. With the end of that story being the fallen satellite rousing it from its sleep. I know the other movies are all their own standalone things in separate corners of the multiverse, but didn't they tie into that same story with little details in the others? Like wasn't John Goodman's character in Cloverfield Lane a former employee of the company that quit because of weird shady **** he witnessed them doing? And the alien theme is Cloverfield Lane's thing while Cloverfield Paradox goes more in the direction of the monsters being demons. I don't think they're all meant to have the same type of back story. Wait a second, that director's quote that was mentioned doesn't say that the monster came from space, it says that a meteor came down.
the marketing for this was brilliant. they created facebook accounts for each main character and each posted in real time as each characters plot line through the movie. THERE WERE ALSO PLOT CLUES ALL POVER THE INTERNET WHICH WE ALL ATE UP.
I remember too, it was awesome. It was such a refreshing and rabbit-hole way of delving for clues surrounding the story. You can still look up websites like Tagruato (oil drilling company that woke up Clover) and Slusho drinks (Rob's new job)
You touched on one of the best aspects of the writing of this film: It's so easy to forget it's a kaiju film until shit starts to go down. When I first watched this, I genuinely wondered: "Did I put the right film on?", subsequently forgot because I was really enjoying this found footage romance drama, and then got smacked in the face when the movie decided to remind me what I was actually watching. xD
I recommend u both should check out Chronicle. It’s filmed the same way as this. It’s about 3 high school students who become superheroes. It stars Dane DeHaan, Alex Russell and Michael B. Jordan. I think u two will really enjoy it as much as u did with Cloverfield.
1) So at the end scene with Coney Island it’s hard to spot but if you look at the sky right as you hear the beep, you can see a satellite crash into the Earth. People first thought it was the creature landing from space, but the lore is that a satellite was observing the creature which was living in the ocean, sleeping. When the satellite crashed it woke it up. 2) Also just a scary insight, that monster was its baby form. 3) those little creatures weren’t its babies, they were a parasite that fed on the monsters blood. If they bite you, you explode a few minutes after. 4) It’s said that the monster wasn’t doing this on purpose, most of the destruction was due to it being confused and frightened due to the explosions and loud noises.
LOVE this film and have seen it multiple times. A few things on this film: The creatures that fell off of the monster were parasites unique to the monster. Rob becomes so single-mindedly obsessed with finding Beth because of his brother. The last words Jason tells him before everything goes sideways is that since Rob clearly loves Beth, Rob needs to be with her regardless of what it may cost him, though at that point Jason is talking about Rob's new job in Japan. The next thing the group knows Manhatten is under siege by a kaiju and Jason dies trying to cross the Brooklyn Bridge and Rob very quickly realizes he cannot lose Beth too. In the scene on the ferris wheel towards the end you can *juuuuusst* make out something rocketing out of the sky and crashing into the water. Given that it occurs several weeks before the attack on Manhattan a lot of fans speculated that it was an alien egg containing the monster. The director would later say that the monster in this film is only an infant, and essentially rampaging because it is unaware of itself and the world around it so it seems to confirm the egg theory. If I remember right Abrams later said that it was a piece of a satellite breaking up and crashing into the ocean, but the egg explanation is much more interesting. Fun fact: at the very end of the credits (it is a bit difficult to hear) you can just catch a faint whisper saying "help us". I think the voice sounds a bit closer to Beth's so at the very least she may have survived the bombing, and the camera definitely does as the film opens noting that the footge you're about to see is of the NY "incident" and was found in what used to be Central Park. When the film came out on DVD fans went over a LOT of it and someone had the idea to play the end credits whisper backwards. If you listen to THAT recording online you can make out a man saying "...it's still alive." It is referred to as the "Cloverfield" incident because that is the name of the area of Central Park where the camera was found.
the satellite thing was from the backstory revealed in the arg marketing for the film. there were articles and things about tagurato's satellite getting lost and them mining there.
"the egg explanation is much more interesting" *rocking back and forth* people are allowed to have their own opinions... people are allowed to have their own opinions... people are allowed to have their own opinions... people are allowed to have their own opinions...
Saw this in theaters when it came out. I was in highschool. It absolutely captivated me. I left the building feeling different. It was awesome. Over the years, I've watched it so many times, and i truly believe it's a MASTERCLASS in film dialogue. It honestly feels like real, genuine conversations, reactions and comments, compared to all the films I've seen since then. More script writers need to take cues from this film. Idk if they were allowed to improvise, but it certainly felt like it❤ it's my absolute favorite aspect of this movie. 10/10, even after all these years. Nothing comes close.
One thing I remember about the lead up to this movie is that the marketing was super vague, and nobody had any real idea what it was. In one of the first trailers, you can hear Hud say "I saw it, it's alive, it's huge!" Well, a ton of people online were convinced they heard "I saw it, it's a lion, it's huge!" and that led to a widespread theory that this was going to be a live action Voltron movie. It was a crazy time.
I admire the military, police, medic, and all the emergency service crew. Because, they also has family and friend they should be worry about. But they are all still out there helping people.
I liked the subversion of the hero trope in this movie, in that Jason was the obvious leader of the group: smart, forceful, decisive. You'd normally expect him to be the main protagonist. Then he's unexpectedly killed off in Act 2, and Rob "the douchebag" has to take the lead role, which he plainly isn't cut out for.
I had a great first experience with this film. I saw it on tv, in a Norwegian hotel, while on a business trip. I knew nothing about it, but it was in English, so I put it on. I was sure it was just a drama about some American 20-somethings and their humdrum love lives. You can imagine my shock when all hell broke loose!
Oh man, that must have been a trip ! That's kinda the ultimate best way to discover this movie : not knowning what you're going into and taking the first act romcom drama at face value ! I can imagine there was a few loud WTF?! and wide open eyes when it got serious. I envy you.
@@vincentdesjardins1354 Haha, "WTF" just about sums it up. I did actually check that I hadn't laid on the remote and changed to another movie. But aye, for sure, it really did make for one of the biggest and best twists I've experienced in any movie.
I LOVED this in theaters. It was such an experience. By the end of the film I felt just like the main characters. Stressed, exhausted, dizzy, on edge. It was wonderful. Never been so into a movie like this one. Scariest moment ever in a movie for me was when they’re on top of Beth’s apartment and you see the monster barreling right towards them through the park. SO much anxiety.
YES! This is one of my favorite monster movies of all time and it doesn't get nearly as much recognition as it deserves! Thank y'all so much for reacting to it!!!
I could not have said it any better! One of my absolute favorite movies. There was no buildup and very little advertisement or trailers going in. By design no doubt! The sound design of “Clovers” screams are incredible! Matt Reeve became on of my favorites after this one…
YES! So happy you guys listened to our comments! Remember, this film was released not 6 years after 9/11, so some of the images of NY being attacked added an additional layer of evocation. I liken this film to what Godzilla was for Japan in the wake of the atomic bomb. Kind of a cathartic way of dealing with that trauma through pop culture and art. The viral marketing campaign for this movie was INCREDIBLE. The original trailer, which only showed the first attack during the party, was released in theaters without even giving away the title, only the date! Audiences were left wondering what the heck they just saw. It was so cryptic, up to the release, with the promo website looking like a site dedicated to Rob's Japanese company. There were clues and more found footage released to the site, that even led followers to another site to find Easter Eggs, that were eventually tucked into the film. This movie was produced by JJ Abrams at the height of his success with the TV show 'LOST' and he used a lot of those speculation invoking techniques in marketing this movie. Dig into the marketing campaign if you want some fun research. 'The sequel, '10 Cloverfield Lane', though a much different movie, is worth a reaction. Please follow up;
Slusho! The fake websites that were made for this film and even slusho drinks. Piecing together the clues of the monster's origin was really fun with the online community back then.
Straight up I took a class on cultural trauma in film during my degree, and this was one of the centerpieces of the first 3 weeks. Exactly what we talked about, at length.
Guys you have to read everything about the viral marketing about this one, 100 easter eggs of fake news they sent out before, fake brands, fake happenings, and so on and on. Even the last scene of them together you get snippets of something happening. Won't tell more but all these things together made this movie one of my absolute fav ones ever.
@@sgtleska Yess! Totally, I appreciated both because of the extra-mile they went. That's what I call cinema "experience" and I really miss these things nowadays
Amazing reaction!❤ I'm shocked, stunned and not a little amazed that you guys have never seen this. Such an awesome film. It gets better every time you watch it. Right at the end of the "day out" footage where they're riding the Ferris Wheel you see something fall from the sky and crash into the sea in the background!😮
YESSS, we actually caught that during the editing progress and it was nuts!! What a fantastic flick, we had a BLAST and cannot wait to rewatch it already 😂
So in the DVD extras one of the behind the camera folks mentioned that the monster is actually supposed to be an infant. When I learn this it made me look at the movie in a whole new light. A baby waking up in a strange place lashing out and crying seemed to give the creature some depth
The part where they see it and it cuts to the army firing right behind is one of favourite shots ever done, with the sound etc it puts you right in the moment
I think the sequels are worth a watch as well, but they definitely go to some weird places and are also more rewarding if you delve into the worldbuilding and meta/analog horror campaign they created for these, because there is a lot of interconnectedness and extra details floating around not made particularly obvious by the films themselves. I'll never forget seeing this in theatres... It was wild with a crowd and we all had no clue what we were in for
Skip Paradox, awful movie. Painfully apparent that the Cloverfield name was tacked on, great cast though. But 10 Cloverfield Lane is fantastic, its tacked on too, but it doesn't hamper the result.
Right, the acting and dialogue was so natural, it sold the premise in an instant! Thank you so much for being so kind and for your support, it truly means the world to us!
I watched this in theatres without any idea what it was. Never saw a trailer, never heard about it. A group of us used to go to half-price movies on Tuesday nights, and thought the poster looked cool. So, we went in, and suddenly, we're in the middle of all this shyte! It was a hectic experience. So worth it.
think this movie was part of a trilogy or theme set.. the other being 10 Cloverfield Lane. MUCH RECOMMENDED NEXT.. it was one of those movies you just had no idea what direction it was going .. so many turns.. and a third the Cloverfield Paradox (mixed reviews)...
I remember when this came out and lots of people got dizzy/sick watching it in theaters lol, but I absolutely love "Found Film" style movies, especially when it comes to monsters. Another fun one is a Norwegian film called Troll Hunter from 2010, although it's all in Norwegian, it won a few awards and was deemed a "Norwegian classic". Worth checking out sometime, especially if you like these Blair-Witch style found footage movies!
The ARG (artificial reality game) for the cloverfield universe is next level, like the amount you learn like that Clover (the monster) was a juvenile and the big things are parasites that feed on Clover, the shot at the end you see a satellite fall into the ocean which lead to a drilling from a company that’s important later that’s actually what woke up Clover. So much lore it’s great
After watching this film we did some research on the production as per usual and learned about all that went into the marketing for this film. Not only did we learn a bunch of interesting lore, but the strategy was actually pretty insane!
Remember the guy who had his stomach gone? My theory is that they bite you and transfer something inside you and you explode like you guys were saying about that girl that got bit in the subway(I don’t remember her name). Notice how she was bleeding from the inside e.i. Nose, eyes and ears. You guys might have nailed that theory! Awesome reaction as always. You guys will be my favourite reaction channel forever ❤
Matt Reeves Confirmed that the final scene on the ferris wheel was the video of the monster falling from the sky into the ocean. Love that they put that in the movie
I'm sorry if I gave a tiny bit away when you announced you were doing a reaction video on Cloverfield. I just love this movie SO MUCH and got carried away. The movie means even more when you live here in NYC and you see how realistic they did locations and distance between them. Can you imagine a fire fight in Lower East Side? BTW, I think that store is Bloomingdales. Which is 59/3rd. I used to work in that area. The only thing is... The version you watched has a little more clues to what's going on. My version keeps you almost always in the dark. And I saw the 'making of'... The creature designer did a ton of research and didn't want to make some weird looking monster that makes no physical sense. This movie hasn't aged a bit. It looks SUPER realistic. You know when the comments part of your video is long you loved it!
I like how found footage was back in trending in media, cloverfield was the one movie that always came too mined, loved your reactions Yall earned a new sub👍
Seeing this at the cinema 15yrs(already!) ago,I was astonished. The visuals, the anxiety, the fear and boy...the sound! One of the loudest, most visceral cinema experiences I've ever been to. Glad you loved it,it's a unique, top drawer movie,so well executed. Loving your scaredy cat reactions to this!🙀😁
I love watching reactor’s completely forget that this is still a monster movie and get invested in the characters and their story beforehand. That’s how you know they really did a great job fleshing out the characters, reeling you into their lives then BAMM straight to the main plot of the movie. What’s crazy is that according to the director and producers, this is just a baby monster looking for it’s mama. Can you imagine how big it actually is as an adult. This is one of my top favorite movies of all time
Two things: 1) The teaser trailer for this was FANTASTIC! And it didn't even reveal the title, just the opening date. So you would have to come home from the theatre and Google your way to what movie it was. Which brings me to 2) At the quiet parts, you could seriously hear a pin drop in that movie theatre. I don't think people were even breathing!!
I have to say, this might be my favorite commentary from you guys. You just seem so lax and like how me and my friends and brother would commentate during a film.
I didnt get to see this is theaters but I remember seeing the scene of the head the statue of liberty flying off and landing. I was just like that looks like my kind of movie. Been obsessed ever since. Its very well done and has aged well. So so freakin glad you guys liked it ❤️ it hits every time.
This film succeeds so well as a found footage film as well as a Kaiju film, but I think what will be talked about the longest is the marketing for this film. The trailer was basically the roof top of the party and the head landing in the park, the the release date. It told nothing about the story, but got people talking. Everyone had their own theory of what it could be. Also, I don't know if you guys are familiar with the SCP universe, but my fan theory is that this film is part of that universe. They mention operation "Hammer Down," which in the SCP universe is a super heavily armed paramilitary unit employed by the foundation. So I think that was the O5 Council voting to level Manhattan in order to maintain containment. Iykyk.
I like how to make this feel authentic like it is indeed found footage they didn’t hire professional cameraman. The actors and Matt Reeves himself even handled the camerawork. He confirmed this in his interview segment for Bravo’s 13 Scarier Movie Moments
Yes, they are awesome. A sweet balance between fun honest low-key reactions on one side and genuine passion for the craft and knowledge on the other. Amongst the very best movie reaction channels on YT.
Literally always feels like we’re sitting down with a couple of our friends and geeking out about movies…my wife and I always watch your reactions together.
I definitely gotta join the Patreon now! This is one of my favorite monster movies of all time. Hell, it's one of my favorite films! The handheld style, the sheer chaos and panic being portrayed, and GOD, THE MONSTER! Just MARVELOUS! I'm glad you two are watching it!
I remember watching it when it came out, and I really liked the film, then everyone around me hated it and complained about it every time it was brought up. Glad to find people online who also liked it. This was one of those films I could never talk about to others because it would be followed up with a bunch of grumpy ranting, oh well.😅
I remember I was 6 in 2008 and was at my neighbour’s place watching this movie, it shook me so hard lol, but didn’t remember the name of it and I didn’t have pc at the time, let alone access to internet, so there was no way to find it. The fact that nobody around knew it didn’t help either, to the point I started doubting whether I made it up. However I liked it so much that I remembered every scene in it. Only in 2018 I out of nowhere stumbled upon it on the internet and since then rewatch it every year.
I was obsessed with this movie when I first discovered it as a kid. It was the summer of 2010 when I first watched it and I watched it so many times over the years. It was so thrilling and intense. Such a well made movie that I still love.
That was a baby Kaiju , scared and looking for it's mother! We are still looking for the sequel to this movie!!! If that was a baby imagine the size of the mother!!!
37:52 I always wondered why it would have bothered with something so small to it. But if you look closely, you can see Hud’s legs in its mouth while the camera falls away. “It was eating people.”- Marlena Always made this line a lot more creepy to me.
your reactions are some of my absolute fave on yt, and this was extra special because you're from NY and knew all the locations which is extra immersive. I can't even imagine how it would feel watching this plot happening in my city and streets I know.. extra scary
My first time seeing this in the theater back in 2008, I kept forgetting Hud's name, so I just called him Cameraman Jish. When he died at the end, I was like, "It got Jish, Cameraman Jish, noooooooo"!!! Also, let me just say, watching this in a movie theater, with the surround sound, truly an experience
@selardohr7697 I went with my friends, one of them had her arm around mine the entire movie, Lol. She was genuinely freaked out. I have yet to have another experience like that in theaters
I love that everyone who watches this movie forgets it' a monster movie for the first part while at the party. It does such a good job of just pulling you into the drama that when it starts to go down its a little shock to the viewer.
Your saying that as if it’s a good thing, JAR JAR ABRAHAMS, only made 1 good movie and destroyed the Star Wars and Star Trek franchises .massively overrated.
@@irwin3381Star Trek 2009 was amazing. Into darkness not so much and beyond was fantastic. The sequel trilogy of Star Wars is better than the prequels straight up. So yeah he’s made amazing movies with only 1 that’s just ok being rise of skywalker.
I will NEVER forget seeing the *_Cloverfield_* trailer for this for the first time. I had a friend who had a conflicting committment so he gave me his press screening pass to see *_Transformers_* before anyone else. The trailer played before the movie, it was JUST like this as a sudden cold reveal, barely even seemed like it even WAS a movie trailer, and provided no other information about what was shown. On top of that it was like a week and a half before the entire rest of the world saw it, it was impossible to go back and rewatch. I've never felt that same feeling of pure excitement and total confusion, and that was exactly the same tone as what the movie finally delivered. It STILL stands out in a way unlike anything else.
Please watch the sequel - 10 Cloverfield Lane. The sequel isn't a found footage handheld, but it's an incredibly well acted, creepy movie well worth watching.
I grew up just outside of NYC and was 12 years old during 9/11. This movie brought back legit flashbacks of a day I honestly have very little memory of. I wasn't in the city when it happened and they sent everyone home from school early but I remember seeing the smoke in the distance and the massive amount of sirens and fire trucks going by. The way this movie captures the mass panic and fear is very accurate.
This movie is a gem! Super under rated. When it came out, it was the closest thing to a modern kaiju movie, and to people like me who adore those movies, it was amazing. I 10000% recommend you guys to watch the "sequel", it's called 10 cloverfield lane. it's SO good. And of course, You HAVE yo watch Pacific Rim!
Fun fact though; there *is* a godzilla found footage, only it's an ARG video and quite short. The Cloverfield series is actually really good, too. There was a massive viral ad campaign when the movie originally came out and the hidden backstory of the creature and the general lore is amazing. The TLDR of it is that a Japanese/American oil company drilled deep into the earth and harvested a sort of smile that is addictive to humans and was added to "Slusho" drinks. This slime was basically part of the species that the monster is, afectionatly called "Clover". Oh, and the kicker? This Clover is a baby.
I adore Cloverfield. Watching it in the theatre was a wild ride. Seeing you view for the first time both as cinematic professionals and as viewers was so much fun.
That bridge collapse scene feels way too real after Francis Scott Key Bridge tragedy that took place this morning in Baltimore. My heart breaks for those poor people who can be seen driving on the bridge as it went down. How awful it must be to go from perfectly safe on a bridge, to plummeting to your immediate doom. The scene really made me think about it more than I would have
Ya’ll don’t just react, you point out the music, the shots, the sounds, etc on every movie you watch. If I were to ever make a movie or even a fan film on TH-cam, I would not hesitate on having y’all review it first because you know the little things that matter. Definitely subscribed and can’t wait to see more!
Bloody good reaction you two. AS someone who was in NYC on 9/11 this film gave me an opportunity to revisit feelings I did not know I still had. In the comfort and safety of a film theatre. Forever grateful I am to Reeves for allowing me and others like me to revisit this titanic moment in time. Helped in therapy to be able to identify new/old things and work through them. I learned for me that there is no such thing as closure and became acquainted with resolve and resolution for moving on from trauma. Bloody good film. Bloody good reaction. Cheers!
Fun fact: the head for the Statue of Liberty was originally to scale of the true size, but the director didn’t think it looked impressive enough and was sorta lame with how small it was. So they upped the size of it when it landed
In the last scene when there on the Ferris wheel you can see a splash on the distance of the ocean, it's when the creature made touchdown. That's probably why the military confiscated the footage because they wanted to know how it got here.
This is not only my favorite found-footage film, but one of my favorite films ever. I remember watching Transformers in theaters back in 2007 when this trailer was first released. We talked about what this film was gonna be instead of the movie we just watched lol, because they didn't give us title or anything....just a release date. Also, this film had the best marketing campaign of all time, which I'm sure you've both heard of by now. I watch it at least once a year. It's that good! I'm a new subscriber. Found your channel through the LOTR reactions. Love your energy and insight in every video!
This was TJ Miller’s film debut. He hardly actually appeared onscreen, but he still carried the film using his voice. He later went on to play voice roles in Ready Player One, Big Hero 6 and the entire How To Train Your Dragon franchise. He even played a recurring character in Gravity Falls.
The beginning feels based HEAVILY on 9/11 and the foothae from that. The dust clouds filling the strets, people looking around, not sure what's happening. Even them running into a shop to avoid the dust reminds me of people taking shelter in stores and getting water.
@@_Skullguy_ let’s not go into details so we don’t spoil the first movie for them. If you like it then more power to you. But It’s pretty awful, it’s all just pretty colors and no soul.
I was in college when this came out and saw it with friends. Two things stood out related to the cultural zeitgeist you mentioned from that era. When the Statue of Liberty head gets thrown, and the crowd walks up to it, a lot of them had their phones recording. Me and my friends had never seen that in a movie before and it was such an interesting shift in technology and culture that we talked about later. Now we probably don’t even notice if people in movies have their phones recording. Second, I remember this movie getting a little bit of criticism, I think I saw one article calling it “9-11 the thrill ride”. I was in 9th grade during 9-11, but it felt like forever ago to me during Cloverfield. Now I can’t believe it’s been almost twice that long since Cloverfield came out.
I'm always so impressed at how they got us to care so much for these characters so quickly. That's a gift. Those are writers who are really considering their audience completely. I will always appreciate this script SO MUCH.😭
I had the privilege of seeing this in the theater. It felt like you were in this experience with the characters. It was like I was there. Absolutely amazing film and a brutal experience. I love the reality of the whole thing. It just sucks you in to the whole world and makes it feel real.
For all people who say the monster is crashing in the ocean at the end of the movie: that is in fact wrong. Please watch cloverfield 3 (cloverfield paradox). Then you know what was crashing in the ocean and from where the monster came from.
That party is so effective at setting the viewer up to be caught off guard. You're meeting a lot of new characters, getting a lot of exposition and learning about everyone, and you're so focused on that that when things finally kick off, you go 'Oh yeah, this is a monster movie.'
Hey guys. Thank you. I've recommended it in the comments to your 'Blair Witch Project' one. So happy that you've actually done this - and without too much of a delay as well. Amazing reaction as always.

6:49 the lore reason why she’s knocked out is terrifying. The character is named Jamie Lascano and was part of the movie’s ARG. The tldr is her boyfriend went missing due to him messing with an evil in universe company and she was poisoned, so it’s likely that she’s dead in that scene and nobody realizes it, both in movie and irl (unless you were caught up with the arg). Really in depth stuff

There is so much 9/11 trauma in this movie. This and the Tom Cruise war of the worlds. There was a need to show that sort of experience but fictionalized. The dust clouds and the people walking around dazed and covered in dust from the building collapsing. Compare to Independence Day which was pre-9/11. Completely different vibe.

I don’t think this film gets enough attention. I think it is not only a great found footage film, but just an awesome monster movie!
Oh it got plenty of attention in 2008.
Not worthy of as much hate as it got, but flawed.
it would if it wasnt fucking garbage... no offense to you at all but the movie sucked in my opinion...
..."no... No I am really not."
Ordeal.
Agreed. The marketing kept it so mysterious, and then finally seeing it in the theater, was an experience.
My nephew and I were in the front row center opening night, and the theater general manager came out and said "enjoy the best sound system in the state". The military street scene was wild. One of the best movie experiences

The idea of the movie came from JJ Abrams, who was in Japan and saw all these Godzilla toys and thought "What if we did our own Godzilla, but with a handheld camera and you're right there in the middle of this insane action sequence?"
The creature, nicknamed Clover, is actually a juvenile, standing 250 ft tall, while the adults are 700-800 ft in height.
Right. It's not a malevolent, evil alien going on a rampage. It's confused and scared and panicking.

Just like how Godzilla is based of Hiroshima and stuff
@@rohe1790Not really - Godzilla is a direct response to nuclear war, it was a statement.
Cloverfield is just a direct response to Godzilla, not 9/11.
Don't get me wrong, I love Cloverfield, saw it twice in the theatre - but its conception is purely out of entertainment and nowhere near as deep as Godzilla.
JJ and many others were very traumatized by 911, I have a feeling there is some of that catharsis going on here@@Angivel

That's not the monster
Yep it's the monster.
@@angelrosas2556
Speaking with SYFY, Reeves revealed that yes, the monster known as Cloverfield is in fact an extraterrestrial, with the final moments of the first movie showing its arrival on Earth. “When we revisit that footage where they're on the Ferris wheel at the end, you can see the meteor flying down and hitting the ocean."
Yeah.
I was deployed in Iraq when this came out. I saw a bootleg cam version of this and I think it contributed to making this movie feel more raw and real.

Chronicle always gave me the feeling of a live action Akira.
A few things on this film:
The creatures that fell off of the monster were parasites unique to the monster.
If you listen to THAT recording online you can make out a man saying "...it's still alive."
It is referred to as the "Cloverfield" incident because that is the name of the area of Central Park where the camera was found.
It was satellite debris that awakened the creature from the depths, how it got there in the first place is probably something to do with the paradox
the satellite thing was from the backstory revealed in the arg marketing for the film. there were articles and things about tagurato's satellite getting lost and them mining there.
"the egg explanation is much more interesting" *rocking back and forth* people are allowed to have their own opinions... people are allowed to have their own opinions... people are allowed to have their own opinions... people are allowed to have their own opinions...

Thank you guys for watching and always suggesting bangers!
I could not have said it any better! One of my absolute favorite movies. There was no buildup and very little advertisement or trailers going in. By design no doubt! The sound design of “Clovers” screams are incredible! Matt Reeve became on of my favorites after this one…
@@laminar0886 Yessss that sound is so iconic and hauntingly well-designed!
The soldier is being surprisingly honest with them, that HAS to be against protocol, but it was nice to see
YES! So happy you guys listened to our comments!
Remember, this film was released not 6 years after 9/11, so some of the images of NY being attacked added an additional layer of evocation. I liken this film to what Godzilla was for Japan in the wake of the atomic bomb. Kind of a cathartic way of dealing with that trauma through pop culture and art.
The viral marketing campaign for this movie was INCREDIBLE. The original trailer, which only showed the first attack during the party, was released in theaters without even giving away the title, only the date! Audiences were left wondering what the heck they just saw. It was so cryptic, up to the release, with the promo website looking like a site dedicated to Rob's Japanese company. There were clues and more found footage released to the site, that even led followers to another site to find Easter Eggs, that were eventually tucked into the film. This movie was produced by JJ Abrams at the height of his success with the TV show 'LOST' and he used a lot of those speculation invoking techniques in marketing this movie. Dig into the marketing campaign if you want some fun research.
'The sequel, '10 Cloverfield Lane', though a much different movie, is worth a reaction. Please follow up;
Slusho!
The fake websites that were made for this film and even slusho drinks. Piecing together the clues of the monster's origin was really fun with the online community back then.
@@allenruiz964 I really fell down the marketing rabbit hole up to the release of this film.
The first found-footage movie that really pushed meta engagement well was The "Blair witch project". Fair call though. 👍
It was wild with a crowd and we all had no clue what we were in for
We had a blast! We can only imagine how this was being in the theater on day one!
10 Cloverfield Lane was awesome.
@@mattquinn2215I love 10 Cloverfield Lane. John Goodman is so good.
Skip Paradox, awful movie. Painfully apparent that the Cloverfield name was tacked on, great cast though. But 10 Cloverfield Lane is fantastic, its tacked on too, but it doesn't hamper the result.
Igore Paradox. It's so unbelievably awful I doubt they would ever make it canon if they make another one.
I still remember when I saw this at the theaters it was such a blast because the marketing and trailers did not absolutely give nothing away.
It was jawdropping and felt so real in that found-footage aspect. Such an impressive film! Always looking forward to all these movie reactions!
Oh man! Love films that take that approach. Unpredictable in the best way possible!
i dont get why people dont like paradox its an amazing movie and gives a really good "prequel" vibe
@@Washinyot I’ll give it a go.
@@Washinyot100% agree super underrated
@@OfficialMediaKnights it was one of the most creative and immersive movie marketing campaigns I've ever seen. It was a rabbit hole.
That is not true. Please go watch cloverfield 3 (cloverfield paradox). Then you would know whats crashing in the ocean
It’s a satellite lol geez
It's a sattellite that was monitoring it. No clue why he said that, it just creates even more confusion about what the hell the monster is
These monsters really make me think of the cosmic horrors invented by HP Lovecraft, which is why i love these Cloverfield movies.
Funny you say that because we're FINALLY getting an Call of Cthulhu movie with Justin Wan directing it.
@seanderoo37 nice. I have a call of cthulhu movie from 2005 that was made as a 1920s silent film. Looking forward to a new one
I like how found footage was back in trending in media, cloverfield was the one movie that always came too mined, loved your reactions
Yall earned a new sub👍
This is one of my top favorite movies of all time
Two things:
1) The teaser trailer for this was FANTASTIC! And it didn't even reveal the title, just the opening date. So you would have to come home from the theatre and Google your way to what movie it was.
Which brings me to
2) At the quiet parts, you could seriously hear a pin drop in that movie theatre.
Iykyk.
Watching this in theatres in 2008 was wild, I wish they kept making movie trailers that don't spoil the who thing
I like how to make this feel authentic like it is indeed found footage they didn’t hire professional cameraman. The actors and Matt Reeves himself even handled the camerawork. He confirmed this in his interview segment for Bravo’s 13 Scarier Movie Moments
I've been watching your channel recently and I have to admit that I really like your style. Keep that energy going, guys. ❤👏

It adds a new dimension to a great film when you watch it with "friends" who know the locations. Thanks guys.
At the end you can see something fall into the ocean👀 I didn't notice when I first saw it, but my best friend was like "YO WHAT WAS THAT" lol
We are still looking for a sequel? Wtf, there are 3!!!! cloverfield movies out in the world...
Yes! My popcorn flew everywhere, the whole crowd was so into it!
There is actually trilogy to this universe. JJ Abrams had a hand in all three also. I hope you two continue this franchise!
Will do!

Sounds good to us!
Then the sci-fi switch up Cloverfield Paradox, for the origin story.
The sequences are also very interesting.

In facts wrong. Please go watch cloverfield 3. Then you know whats crashed into the ocean.
This is not only my favorite found-footage film, but one of my favorite films ever. I remember watching Transformers in theaters back in 2007 when this trailer was first released.
The best thing about this movie? We get reeled in with all that Beth/Rob story and then all of the sudden... KAPOW!

That party is so effective at setting the viewer up to be caught off guard. You're meeting a lot of new characters, getting a lot of exposition and learning about everyone, and you're so focused on that that when things finally kick off, you go 'Oh yeah, this is a monster movie.'

My favorite part😂
Also, "Something else, also terrible!"

So true, man of steel/bvs did it as well but later on
