This movie holds a special place in my "monsterverse" heart.
As a 90's kid who had no access to the original Godzilla(Gojira) in any way, this was my first memorable taste.
Completely understand people's criticisms of it, but for me, I happily go back to it every now and again just for the nostalgia.

Thank you for sharing your first experience of Roland Emmerich's much-maligned Godzilla. It isn't as terrible as some people make out, but most people (including me) agree with you that the human element of the story is quite weak and lessens the experience of Godzilla the creature.

Despite performing below expectations domestically, Godzilla '98 was a profitable worldwide success, grossing nearly three times its budget. The critics were the ones who REALLY hated the film, while the fans seemed to more-or-less love it. The execs at Toho Co., Ltd. were also highly critical of Godzilla '98, even going as far as trademarking future incarnations of Godzilla '98 as "Zilla" for future appearances stating that, "Emmerich's film took the 'God' out of 'Godzilla' by portraying the character like a mere animal." ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Created new godzilla fans from the 90s era kids, created a spin off cartoon series that was well received, AND helped benchmark future American made godzilla projects such as the Legendary Pictures Godzilla.
Not every adaption has to be 100% or even half accurate to it's source material. For fucks sake the old Godzilla movies are not 100% accurate to each other lol. Each one is it's own thing, it's own version, and owns it.
It was good, plain and simple and people like you just wanna be *so* damn pissy and angry instead of looking at the movie objectively which is a good movie.
Also the only people back in it's initial release thast were pissy about it were just older adults who were the small percentage of western people that actually watched Toho Godzilla movies anyway. The MASS majority of lovers for this movie and Zilla as a creature came from us 90s kids. It created more of an audience than it ruined.

I feel like a lot of people miss that the monster in this movie isn't THE Godzilla. It's named that by the sole survivor on the Japanese tanker, who naturally thought that it was. The sad irony of this movie is that they tried to use its success to spark an interest in the Japanese Godzilla movies, hence why Godzilla 2000 was shown in the US, but people were confused because it was not the same monster as in the American movie, so the interested died off near-immediately. The pop culture landscape truly was different before the internet. I like this movie, but Godzilla 1998 was truly done justice in the subsequent animated series, which featured the sole surviving baby, named Zilla Jr., who fought other giant monsters.

They’re a case of island dwarfism, not island gigantism (fyi these phenomena are large creatures evolving into small ones after getting trapped onto an island, and small creatures evolving into large ones after getting trapped on an island respectively). Which means that for as big as they are, their ancestors are far larger.

I just remember really liking this movie a lot despite a lot of people hating it.
Also, fun fact: there is a cartoon/anime series based off of this movie. In it, Nick ends up finding the last egg as it hatches and gets covered in the egg's fluids. The baby ends up imprinting on Nick and ends seeing him like a surrogate parent. The whole series is about Nick forming a crew to study Godzilla as well as other kaiju like monsters that start showing up around the world. The episodes usually revolve around them trying to stop someone from capturing/killing their Godzilla or trying to find ways to stop the other kaiju monsters.

This movie was honestly a pretty decent 90s monster/kaiju movie in general, just wasn’t Godzilla. Zilla is a perfectly fine movie monster as its own thing, and honestly I got mad affection for Zilla. Reading him in comics, especially when he’s swimming around Monster Island and the other monsters won’t let him on, but the text states that perhaps one day he will be accepted by the others…I feel that gradually Zilla will be accepted more widely as a it’s own being, rather than a poor reflection on the true King.
Also side note, I feel that he would actually work much better as a reimagined Gorosaurus rather than Godzilla. Personal opinion.

The thing is that those copter pilots tried to use heatseeking missiles on a cold blooded reptile while its raining and most likely very cold, theres no way they could have gotten a lock, that it their fault on this. Those pilots should have been briefed that it was a lizard.

@Classic_Galactica Yeah, Monsterverse Zilla is no Godzilla, and it's nothing compared to TriStar Godzilla!

As a 90's kid this was my introduction to godzilla and therefore has a special place in my heart, yes its not the best godzilla but this movie walked so the godzilla movies today could run 😂

This right there is my favourite guilty pleasure movie i know it's not a good movie but way better than ppl say it is. I think the mistake was too make it part of the godzilla franchise if it had been it's on monster movie with another name ppl would probably not hate it that much
