  • Hi! I’m Christine 🙋🏼‍♀️ After working for many years in sales and business ownership, I felt major burnout 😵‍💫 I sold my houses, extra cars, and most of my belongings. Now I'm happier than ever having very few material things. I travel living out of my vehicle with my old and blind best friend, Chase the Dog 🐶 We roam the USA looking for adventure, food, and fun! I'm never sure what the future holds. Join the adventure and find out with me! 🤩
In this video, I show you how I converted my 2012 Ford Transit Connect Van into a camper that can be used for short trips or full-time living 🚐
Thanks so much for watching! I appreciate your time to like, subscribe, turn on notifications, and leave me a comment, as it really helps support the channel! 💛🙏🏼

As someone who did this before sprinter vans, I applaud your efforts. As a carpenter by trade, pay attention to anything someone in the trades is showing you. These are tips and tricks passed down. I have been in trades for 25 years and still learn new ways of doing things.
I like that she used the smaller Transit. There’s so many big vans on the road, but these smaller vans are perfect for conversions.
Also, I’ve camped all through Rockies, Appalachians and Sierra’s. I’ve been so hidden, yet had random people appear out of nowhere to be knocking at 3am. I also learned to say a prayer before entering remote forest areas asking permission from the forest guardians. This has nothing to do with religious beliefs, but merely showing respect to the spirits in the area. Trust me, it works and there’s beings you’d rather have on your side. Always trust your gut instincts and keep good karma. I’m not trying to scare anyone, but I managed to live over 3 years in very remote places and have seen a thing or 2.

I have the same model year Transit Connect. I always enjoy seeing how other people solve their living experiences. Everybody’s priorities are different. I’m an amateur astronomer and carry 2 telescopes in pursuit of dark skies in the west. You’ve done a good job with the limited space of Transit Connect. But one thing I would advise you, if you come west is carry more water! I carry 15 gallons, in the west (west of the Mississippi), potable water can be 50 to 100 miles in between. I’ve been car camping for about 30 years, and I found the maxum, a gallon of water, per person, per day, is really true.

      @ChristineMeachum  ปีที่แล้ว +3

You are right, it is interesting to see everyone’s unique priorities when packing their small space 😊 That’s a good tip about the water! I have heard similar things about the west. Thank you for watching and safe travels!

The way you have everything organized is impressive. And I got a couple new ideas from your video that will help me with my own 2012 transit connect van build.... I just wish there was a few more minutes talking about the actual structure of the van. I am in a rural area where temperatures go from 40 below zero to 100 degrees above in a year, so I really need to understand how to prevent mold, manage temp swings, etc.

*Newly Updated Safety Suggestions: for Campers, Hikers, Explorers, and Travelers*
I just happened to see your channel, and others similar channels recently, and I think that you, and others sharing their actual reality, and some have expressed some of the up, and down sides to van, RV, or vehicle living.
Although, I just noticed your TH-cam channel, and other similar channels, displaying van living.
I just wanted to remind everyone to Aware Be of your surroundings and Alert, I just posted this anyway to help anyone who may benefit from these suggestions
I believe that it is very helpful, and beneficial to others who may be thinking about this type of living without actually thinking through, about the some of the realistic problems that could occur with vehicle or van living etc...
People need to know what up sides there are, as well as some of the down sides of vehicle living.
I believe this channel, and other channels have been informative to others, including myself.
Although, I am NOT living in a vehicle or anything like this.
I feel that you , and others TH-camrs sharing this with your viewers will be very helpful.
I wish you ALL the Best with your traveling endeavors.
I shared this with several other travelers, as I watched their TH-cam channel for the first time, as yours, and I shared with them this information that may be helpful to you as well to others.
Therefore, I would also like to suggest a few Safety tips, and items that may help you, or others in your viewing audience.
Although, you may have knowledge of this already,
I am not sure, so I hope this will be helpful to you, others or someone.
*Keep a Extra working cellphone with you or in your vehicle.
You can purchase inexpensive phone with a very low monthly price between 25, 35, 45, dollars a month with unlimited data and text, and some have Nationwide coverage
Do your research for the best fit for you
Consider Carrying Several Extra portable cellphone phone chargers, and cables.
    Consider theses items:
    *Mini portable power charging station.
I have also seen outdoor portable solar powered power stations, that can be recharged from sunlight this may be very useful to have, to power your devices.
*Invest in a Cellular signal booster for outdoor use, and camping situations to boost or amplify your cell signal and reception.
Consider also the purchase of a WiFi signal booster to also boost your WiFi signal.
Research to see what you prefer.
    *Very Inportant:
Invest in a SOS distress electronic signal device, this a kind of device can send out a distress signal with your exact location.
There are various types of these devices, and including devices that can be used when boating, or camping situations.
*Some have emergency Strobe lights SOS signaling with location alerts, and location updates that can be sent to your family, and emergency first responders.
Some can be synchronized with your smart watch or phone.
There are some satellite SOS texting messaging, locator devices that will send messages with your phone even if there isn’t any cellular signal, or WiFi. With this device your can still text, and communicate with others in a emergency satellite transmission.
Check online, for various emergency SOS products, some are small to fit in the palm of your hand.
You can check online, and on Amazon, research what SOS devices will be a good fit for you.
*Mini portable vehicle battery jumper charger
    *vehicle battery jumper cables
    *Vehicle Jumper cables
*PLEASE BE AWARE* that in the *WINTER*
*vehicle *Batteries fail* many times in very cold weather conditions.
Vehicle batteries drain more often in the winter months.
Please Keep a vehicle battery portable jumper pack, this is a device that can jumper or boost your vehicles battery yourself without another vehicle.
If you have a older battery in your vehicle, Please have it tested or replace it, and consider the purchase a new vehicle battery with higher Cold Cranking Amps rating.
Be Aware that Sometimes even a battery that is a few years old can fail in the Winter months, and extremely cold temperatures.
Some alternatives to Winter Camping, Travelers, Explorers, etc, if you can find a Warmer Climate Location to stay during Extreme Winter months, or stay with family for a few weeks.
Another alternative is renting somewhere although this can probably get expensive.
What ever you decide Be Careful, Alert, Aware, Safe, and Informed...
    *Keep a Fire extinguisher handy
*Smoke detectors, and Carbon monoxide detectors can be helpful
    Consider installing;
*Mounted Dashboard camera front and rear possibly.
*Exterior vehicle mounted camera for the front, rear, and both sides of your vehicle.
Some can be activated by motion, Including spotlights.
    *Interior vehicle cameras
    *Flashlights or pluggin spotlights
    *Portable spotlights, and lanterns
Keep a few whistles around with you, and in your vehicle possibly in your vehicle’s center console
*Keep a Sound horn, for hiking this can service, as a deterrent, and a emergency signal alert for others.
*A set of long range 2 way radios, walkie talkies, to communicate with others during trips, some have 100 mile radius keep for emergencies, you can keep with you when hiking.
Use your own discretion regarding the use carrying of any weapons.
    Don’t forget to bring
    Bear Spray
    Pepper spray
    Where is allowed
Purchase a couple canisters just in case and keep it with you
If you own a drone you can use it to survey your area for animals etc.
However, Please Be Safe and Beware of your Surroundings.
Stay Alert, and Be Safe even when stopping at Rest stops, Truck Stops, and conducting your various tasks.
Keep in often contact with your family, friends etc.
Keep up with the latest Weather Updates, beware and prepare for unexpected Weather events and conditions.
    *VERY IMPORTANT*
    *WINTER AWARENESS*
I would suggest *NOT* to travel to locations without internet, or cellular service in the Winter, the reason is that weather conditions can change very quickly, and you absolutely DO NOT want have a vehicle break down, or malfunction, or emergency, and not have the availability to communicate, and contact your family, and or, emergency road assistance, or emergency services.
Please Keep in mind that even in area where there is cellular service and internet, in the Winter sometimes there are ice storms that may occur and this can cause Power or Electrical failures, until utilities crews repair lines.
    *Your Safety is Important*
*PLEASE BE AWARE* that in some extreme cold temperatures that vehicle fuel lines could Freeze and causing a vehicle to not start.
Just in case Keep your gas tank filled, which helps prevent vehicle fuel lines from freezing.
Keep gas or fuel line additive, or gas line antifreeze, that is rated to use okay for your vehicle.
Check with your a certified mechanic and your vehicle owners manual, and or dealer repair facility to inquire what is best to prevent freezing gas tank and lines in extreme cold.
In the Winter even your bottled Water can freeze so Be Careful and Plan ahead.
    *Safety is Paramount*
    *Your Life is Important*
*You want to Live to Travel another Day*
    *So Be Safe*
    *Stay Alert*
    *Keep your vehicle gas filled*
Don’t ride on fumes, or on Empty.
Don’t chance your Safety by running your vehicle fuel or gas too close to Empty.
Fill it up anyway, it will save you alot of time, and headache later on.
Remember to keep up on routine maintenance, check your tires for wear, keep up with your fluids for your vehicle, like oil levels, antifreeze coolant,
Please carry extra (oil)(washer fluid), (brake fluid), (antifreeze).
You will need extra Winshield Washer fluid because of the ever changing Weather conditions, dustly roads, especially in slushy wet roads.
    *WINTER AWARENESS*
In the winter consider purchasing and deicing Windshield Washer Fluid, for the much colder weather conditions.
Furthermore, you will need extra Windshield Washer Fluid, Because you will Be driving more often in dusty, dirty, windy, and varying weather conditions.
Your windshield will gather dust and debris from long term driving.
Also, Remember Because you are on the road riding for sometimes very long distances, and long periods of time, I would suggest investing in 2 sets of tires, and a spare, the extra set at a home base, friends house to rotate, make sure that you have a spare tire in your vehicle.
Check the mileage ratings on your tires they all very.
Conduct visual inspections of your tires often, check for damage, wearing, air pressure, etc
Keep a pressure gauge to check your tires pressure and a tire pump. Electric, Portable tire pump.
Keep towing insurance to Be Safe if you ever need it.
It Doesn’t cost much try to get National coverage if available, or where you will be traveling.
Keep Extra financing, and savings for any unexpected issues, vehicle repairs, and overnight stays, in a emergency or if you need to rest indoors.
    Keep Enjoying Yourself,
Keep Enjoying the outdoors, and Nature
    Just..Please continue to
    Be Positive, Safe, and Alert..
Wishing Success, Well-being and Happiness You All.
    God Bless You, and everyone
Traveling, or living in their vehicles, Vans, RVs, Hiking etc.
    Please Be Safe.....

I have a young relative interested in van life. He wants to use his cargo van (full size, so lower mpg) to earn a living, so I showed him your video about delivering food using apps like Uber Eats and Doordash. 👍
He is also interested in helping people move out of their apartments/dorm rooms. A full build would not leave enough space to load furniture, so we thought up an alternative build that should leave enough space.
We'll set up a hammock that can be put into a small, hanging bag when not in use, folding card table and folding chair that can be stowed flat against the wall when not in use. The table would act as a desk, cook top with a camp stove, counter, and a table. Water container with a hand pump. One power station that charges when van is running. Power station charges LED camping lantern for light, phone/tablet, and whatever other electric devices he needs. Several nets mounted on ceiling to hold clothes, blankets or sleeping bag, and toiletries.
The idea is that when stowed, everything is out of the way, leaving the cargo area open and usable. He thinks he can use Craigslist to pick up moving gigs and possibly help people get loads from Home Depot/Lowes if their own car will not fit their home improvement supplies. I figure he has nothing to lose by trying, especially is he does food delivery for a more reliable income unless or until business picks up.
He'll likely subscribe to your channel soon. Thanks for showing how you do things living in a vehicle.

Creative. I like your build out. Looks comfy.
I did a siliar thing with covering my mattress. I took 2 single sheets and made a body bag cover. Made fabic ties opposite each other to tie closed the end. I sleep on one side for 2 days and flip it over and repeat i carry 3 bags on my 3rd bag i wash. I always have 1 clean when i wash, which once a week. I use a salad spinner for my undies socks. Wash day i go and find a secluded spot so i can hang my clothes. Winter i just go to a Laundromat.
I have everything budgeted even if i don't spend the money that month. Next month i retire for the second time. First time was military and next will be Social security. Time to start socking money away.
Im healthy except for arthritis. Other than that. I can do anything a woman half my age does. I walk a lot. I also have a planet fitness membership. I have a 24 hour fitness as well. One or the other will be where im headed. I rarely drive east of the Mississippi river. If i do, i usually head to western Wisconsin Minnesota Iowa. I rarely stay in Nebraska. I will cross in to Canada now and then. I plan a route from winter in the Southwest. Spring in Norhwest Summer 10,000 ft elevation. Like Leadsville, Colorado. I will head to Utah in the fall. Winter back southwestern States. I stay out of California for same reasons i stay out of Northeastern States. I have been to Michigan. But i usually either go up to Port Huron or stay in Northwestern Michigan. I raely go to ohio or Pennsylvania. To crowded for me. I hate endless traffic. I drove the East coast South for 10 years. I seen all i need to see in those states. Though i do love the Northeastern states in the fall. I hate traffic more.😂

Very lovely and the van is nice also lol, simple and does the job, just one thing I noticed, the east pipe from the sink was badly kinked,it won't let the water out very well 😊

    • @ChristineMeachum
      @ChristineMeachum  ปีที่แล้ว

The kink was impossible to get out but it did let water through thankfully. Thanks for watching! 😃🙏🏼

I’m a new subscriber after watching your detailed food delivery apps video. Do you have a video of how you built your pull out bed?

I do not have a video on the bed specifics because we just kinda winged it lol Thank you for the subscription! 😃🙏🏼

Great van with excelkent organization, but i would definitely cut down the legs of the bed to be able to sit upright. Deal breaker for me

    Nice set up.
Just a note - in many states (my state Iowa for example) discharging 'gray water' (your sink water) is against the Law.
When I was in a pop up camper my sink set up was two rubber maid sink inserts - when done I drained them into a five gallon jug with spout and dumped it at the dump station.

Maybe look into getting one of those portable power stations with the 12v built in for your cooler, and pretty much everything in your van. There have been some pretty smoking deals on Ecoflows lately, like almost half off.

Thank you! I really appreciate the support! 🙏🏼 The van would not have been comfortable for Chase. The SUV is also a lot more stealthy so I feel more comfortable parking at night😃

Just seeing this after your door dash video…..did you get rid of the Connect? I had a Transit I had converted and upgraded to a Tab 400 teardrop travel trailer. There was a plus to the Transit tho! Stealth!

    • @ChristineMeachum
      @ChristineMeachum  ปีที่แล้ว

I did sell the transit for something even stealthier 😎 I'm putting out a new video about it this Thursday. It's not as nice as a teardrop trailer though! 😆 Thanks for watching!

SO many people make the mistake of making the bed too high, and do not account for the additional 4 inches of mattress - lower the bed and you can sit up without hitting your head ‼️‼️

Your inverter doesn't have a 12V receptacle for your fridge? You should have one installed on your "camp" battery, so you never have to run off your van battery! It might be worth it to look into adding a battery just for the fridge too!

      @ChristineMeachum  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Chase lived with another family member while I traveled in my van last year. He is with me full time now though 🐶😍 I still deliver food when I want something fun/productive to do but I am mostly focused on traveling and TH-cam at the moment. Thanks for watching! 😃🙏🏼
