The Band that saved my life
Still my favourite band ever and was the first ever band I seen live (Derby assembly rooms 1983).. R.I.P Andy Rourke ❤
as an 18 yr old man homeless in London i totally get not wanting the evening to end cos u have nowhere to sleep....sigh
Huge Smiths and Morrissey fan here. I worked in a record store years ago. After hours, we’d put on the Smiths while cleaning up the racks and act out the tunes..especially this one!😊
Did you act like you were working the steering wheel when you were “driving in your car” and throw your hands up with horrified looks “if a double decker bus crashes into us”? Well… that’s what me and my best friend do.
Thank you, sir. Brilliant band. You should check out "This charming man" and "Heaven knows I'm miserable now".
I have a T shirt with these lyrics, haha, it’s great. I adore this song. Morrissey is such a depressive talent! And witty!
Good reaction. I never got the feeling that he didn't want to go home because he had a romantic partner there. I think it was a teen who was kicked out by his parents. Especially when he sings "it's not my home, it's there home and I'm welcome no more."
The lyrics are deep for anyone's interpretation, and it's great music.
The guitarist, Johnhy marr, is really great. If you listen to more of their stuff, you'll definitely pick up on it.
IMHO their best song
This song is more representative of The Smiths sound than "How Soon Is Now", which is a bit of an outlier in that respect. I would suggest "Ask" "Panic" "Sheila Take A Bow" "Girlfriend In A Coma" "This Charming Man" "What Difference Does It Make" "Willian It Was Really Nothing" and "The Boy With The Thorn In His Side" - to be going on with 😉
One of the best sing along choruses ever!
One of the best pop songs ever written!
My favorite band when I was in high school
I had the vinyl single of this song. Played it on repeat for about a month. Then only hourly after that 😂.
I love The queen is dead and Cemetary gates.. Also Frankly Mr Shankly has great lyrics as well
Bigmouth strikes again and Please, please, please let me get what i want are my favorite Smiths songs❤❤❤
2 of my all time favorites too
For everyone, it means what you want it to mean.
great reaction biz, thank you, maybe try The Headmaster Ritual or Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now next....both showcase Johnny Marr's amazing guitar work
Thanks for your great reaction please do more Smiths and Morrissey! Love from Australia!
Check out Barbarism begins at home (live on The Tube) outstanding live performance
The Smiths were my favorite band when I was in high school in the mid to late 80s. They were the perfect band for my teenage angst (though The Cure came in a close second). It's crazy they were only around for about 5 years. RIP Andy Rourke...
ironic as Robert Smith disliked Morrisey lolz
Great band and great track.
This is my favorite Smiths song, listen to "Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now", another great tune.
It's been said that the shlyrics of this song either were inspired by the film Rebel Without a Cause (Morrissey being somewhat of a James Dean obsessive), or are about a queer teenager who has been kicked out of his parent's house after coming out.
A great song to react to would be "what difference does it make", probably my favourite by them
Melodically, off the same album, you may also enjoy the title song: "The Queen is dead", "Bigmouth strikes again" and "The boy with
the thorn in his side". Enjoy!
The Smiths were known for songs featuring inscrutably morbid lyrics. They were the band you listened to when you needed a reminder that other people in the world were more miserable than you were. "There Is a Light That Never Goes Out" captures their sound well. Check out "Bigmouth Strikes Again" from that same album. Also check out "What Difference Does It Make?", "Still Ill", "This Charming Man", "This Night Has Opened My Eyes", "Reel Around the Fountain", "Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now", "Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want" and more.
Literally every their song, lol
Check out “William it was really nothing” 👍🏼
Classic
Manchester, UK's single greatest contribution to world culture! That city has spawned a long list of legendary bands, but, for my money, none as good as The Smiths.
Rusholme Ruffians/Marie's the name....
I always took the subtext of this song to be that the narrator is gay, and been cast out because of that; hence the lines about wanting to say something to this stranger but bottling out:
And in the darkened underpass
I thought, "Oh God, my chance has come at last"
But then a strange fear gripped me
And I just couldn't ask
The string arrangement is really lovely isn't it?
I kinda like the Smiths
lol kinda?

those gay guys are good artists it only bohers me a little bit, tiss
Yo, this is a bit of a radical philosophy nowadays, but what someone else does, really isn't any of my business. I don't care what people do in order to find a bit of joy in this, all too often bleak existence. As long as you don't hurt or infringe other livings beings, what you do is completely up to you.
