      Cars as a whole may be more expensive but EVs are still cheaper compared to years past. There ain't nearly as much of a premium over an ICE car anymore. To the point where if you are buying new, it's pretty competitive to get an EV now.

    • @MrRandomguyTom
      @MrRandomguyTom ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@yedoom high end EVs are pretty much at the same level as ICE cars. But on the cheap(er) end, the difference is still massive. At least in EU where I live. For example VW Golf starts at 23k and iD3 (what can be considered as a Golf equivalent) starts at 38k. The running costs are lower, but it still takes years to catch up to the 15k difference. Not to mention the charging network isn't that good and the range is also quite limiting...

    It is corporate speak to say SUVs are "not" cars so that car brands can loophole themselves out of some obscure tax thing in the US. Same thing with pickup trucks, minivans, and so many automobile categories.

      The weirdest thing is: This SUV trend happened due to emission standards and the exclusion of utility vehicles, but as electric cars have an official emission of 0, that doesn't really matter anymore. However, now the car industry has spoiled their customers so badly with these cars, that we cant come back although that would help with range way more.

    I think the ex30 looks awesome and I totally like the look of the cross country version. It's just too small. I own an older Impreza hatch and I measured the hatch opening and the ex30 is over 10 inches smaller in width and not nearly as tall. I wish it was closer to the since of the Impreza but I know the Volvo hatches have always been pretty small. When I got my car I also liked the C30 but the hatch was even smaller on that car.

    I ordered an EX-30 right away. Shortly after I doubted if the rear leg room would work for me so cancelled. Been going back and forth between the dealership and Volvo to get me $500 deposit back. The dealer said they never finished completing the pre-order process so that would have been a bummer after waiting two years and apparently that put it in limbo and now Volvo says they don't see an order. Worst case I'll use Visa protection but it doesn't inspire confidence.

    Based on the ads I am seeing, one can lease a Hyundai Ioniq 5 or 6 for $400(~$4.5k down) which pretty much the same lease for the Toyota Camry SE 4cylinder(non hybrid), Corolla Hybrid, & Prius Prime. To say Polestar is a Volvo brand, is not 100% accurate. Volvo is part of Geely, a Chinese company, and Polestar was in theory spun off from Volvo to be their own thing. Volvo, Lotus, and their Chinese brands.
    Will they nail the $35,000 price point in the US, maybe. These will face a 25% tariff charge because these will be Chinese vehicles. None of the IRA or most likely local government rebates will apply to this vehicle.

      @kevtheobald ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JonoConstantini I think my main point was Volvo making a cheaper SUV should not be so shocking for a Geely company. Volvo Cars is all owned by Geely. The Chinese builder, which is basically where all Volvo EVs are made these days, is smart using the Volvo brand to gain acceptance in other markets that might be so open to an obvious Chinese company. Certainly true in the US.
      US buyers seem kind of clueless at times. Jeep is consider the most American vehicle builder in some surveys of buyers, even though they make a ton vehicles in their Mexico factories.
      If you go based on labor and parts, Tesla has the top four most American vehicles in 2022 and I would guess 2023. That includes more American than a F150.
      I do no think buyers understand how whole dashes can be made in Mexico and motors can be made in other countries and then sent to a factory in the US for final assembly.
      For me, Volvo is not as premium as they once were as a brand. They still make some high priced vehicles, but I believe Geely wants them to be a mass market brand more than premium. I believe Polestar is going to be their upmarket brand.

    Like come on, do you think the enthusiast who owns a Ferrari and drives it once a month pollutes more than all of the people who drive massive SUVs with massive engines (That are more stressed because of the bigger weight so they pollute even more) to get groceries and move arround everyday? 🙄

    The Volvo EX30 isn't cheap in Ireland. Even in the base config it costs more than a Tesla model Y. Given that it's mass produced in China, what gives with that? Geely (who owns Volvo) are selling another car on the same platform called the Zeekr X which has a much higher spec for less money - same trim level and range as the premium EX30 for about €10,000 less. All I can surmise is consumers are going to get screwed because the name Volvo is on the car and it won't be good value.

    Why does everyone seem to feel they need a brand new full EV?
    I’d recommend buying a used plug-in hybrid that’s 5-8 years old if you have the means to charge it, or else a regular hybrid that’s a few years old. I suspect that a lot of people think that if their commute is 40 minutes long, that it will deplete 40 miles of range in that time. But in reality a lot of people drive a while to get to the highway or freeway, hit traffic or have to wait at a bunch at lights and the distance of their commute is actually much shorter than they expect if they think every minute driven covers a mile. People also might be surprised by how many free charging locations there are near their house or place of work. A lot of people don’t check that kind of data because if you don’t have a vehicle with a plug, you never needed to know.
    A used gen 2 Chevy volt or a plug-in Honda Clarity are essentially the same thing as that new Prius prime. Only you can get one for much less money because they are a few years old and a lot of the people who had a plug-in hybrid 4-7 years ago when they were new, are now trading them in for a full EV. Even though they and most people can use all-electric mode on a good plug-in hybrid for 95% of their trips. If those people were smart with money for cars purchases they wouldn’t have bought the new plug-in hybrid when they were new. New cars are a bad financial move most of the time for most people. 2023 is very different from around 2017 or even around 2020 when it comes to purchasing used plug in hybrids and EVs. You can actually get a pretty good used one now for a decent price. Just stay away from a Nissan leaf or any other EV or plug-in hybrid that doesn’t prioritize cooling the battery effectively to preserve the range.

    Definitely wrong by the time you add the kit you need all these cars will be over £40k and and with the average wage about £30k these cars are out of the reach of most drivers. They also are more expensive to insure and it costs more to change an EV per mile than petrol.

    "urban" right, so dismal range. There is no such thing as good EV with under 250mi winter range. I had 6 of those since 2009. They are useless garbage as you still need a real car, so double the costs of ownership and need to constantly rely on working and available chargers wherever you go. Such pain, don't waste money on these ewaste trashcans, theywill be worthless in 2 - 3 years as real EVs with 80+kWh will become affordable.
