Hi, Ro. The key thing you'll want to do is make sure you re-activate that component before working on the body again. That will ensure everything is organized under that component.
One thing that confuses me is confusing to explain: Extruding a cylinder for example to a rounded handle to create a mold sort of. Every time I try to use the chamfer tool on the top edges of the base I get this error. It doesn't matter what number I try. Error: The fillet/chamfer could not be created at the requested size. Try adjusting the size, deselecting some of the edges (try disabling Tangent Chain), or using multiple separate operations.
you asked for issues needing help - mine is creating a 150mm pipe clip 3D then how do I use this as a base to create 125, 100, 90, 75mm etc examples without starting again?
Hi, Peter. have you watched my tutorial on the Cable clip? th-cam.com/video/XJRPnORhSRo/w-d-xo.html You'll want to set up User Parameters for your dimension - that way you can simply edit the parameters to adjust the model to 125, 100, 90, 75mm, etc. Cheers, Kevin
Thanks for the video i really enjoyed it. I sucessfully printed the name plate but the one of the extruded letters broke away easily from the plate. How can the text be inserted into the plate and extruded to give it more strength? Thanks
G'day Kevin You asked a different question, when you said 'select ONE feature in fusion 360 that confuses me?' Well as a new novice to the CAD world, I guess the the push-pull button as sometimes to goes the champers. Why does it do it? Thanks Greg
Hi Greg. Great question. Push Pull is one of the few commands that tries to be 'smart' and changes based on your selection. If you have faces selected it will become the Offset Faces command. If you have edges selected it will become the fillet command.
@@ProductDesignOnline Thanks for that info. Another a question though. You mentioned in another video that 'NORMAL' is generally good enough to export a STL. I've got anycubic photon mono resin printer. So what STL setting would you recommend for doing a M3 threaded model? Happy3dmodeling Greg
@@gregorychard the default export STL settings should be fine. what will be important is how you slice it in your 3D printer slicer. Make sure the layer resolution is small :)
Kevin you ask us to tell you what we are having trouble with in Fusion 360? I am having trouble making some cookie cutters for my wife. I can make the design but when it comes to the offset with a sharp image the offset breaks the line up. Any help would be appreciated.
i just want to extrude my text but not on an arc but i cannot find anything that helps me. fusion just wants to extrude the plane/block the text is sitting on and will not let me extrude the text what am i missing?
What font are you using? some fonts will not let you extrude the text without right clicking and selecting the explode option. Otherwise, you should be able to select the text... It will be highlighted in blue and then you can activate the Extrude command.
@@ProductDesignOnline yea I found a different video of yours that helped. I’m using a font it does not like. Even exploding it doesn’t let it. So I went with a different font. Your awesome Thank you.
Great video, as always. A couple of things I've noticed: You can also export an .stl file by going to the "Save" menu and selecting "3D Print". This also brings up the expected dialog box. Secondly, Fusion doesn't remember the setting of the "Send to 3D Print Utility"; and always defaults to it being selected each time Fusion is started. I've also found that not only WILL it start Cura, it doesn't recognize that it might already be running. If I have Cura in the background (as I almost always do) Fusion will start a new copy anyway. Rather annoying and that's a behavior I hope will change in the future.
I was curious if there is a way to make more shortcuts to different commands. Like when I try to zoom in the way I naturally scroll my wheel in the direction I THINK will zoom me in actually zooms out.
You can create custom keyboard shortcuts - th-cam.com/video/gSgK5vEQJAw/w-d-xo.html - but the zoom function is not considered a shortcut. You can change the Zoom direction by going to your profile image in the upper right > Preferences > General > check the option "Reverse zoom direction".
Ok, so while I was sleeping I thought about something so to to take this project to the next level. How hard would it be to make a slot or groove on the bottom to slide a led strip through it and it kind of shines through. So when groove is cut it goes through some of the letters. But idk how to do it.
Hi Todd. After creating the text you could create a sketch on the side of the sweep and do a simple extrude cut of that shape. The key would be to create a shape that allows for the shape of LED strip light, while also making sure it's 3D printable (hopefully without supports).

One thing that confuses me: when I've accidentally done something and don't know how to reverse out of it. I know that sounds stupid, but I accidentally created a mid-plane and it took me forever to figure out how to delete it. I'm completely new to this stuff. What are common mistakes and how to fix them? Like, The last video had us making constraints. What if I wanted to undo them? I have no idea how to do that.
Hi Staci. Good suggestion, thanks! To answer it here (in short) you can select just about anything and delete it with the delete key on your keyboard. A good starting point is to right-click and the menu will give you all the available options (whether or not you can delete or remove something).
Great video. Thanks for providing it. Is it possible to just have the text stand up straight from the base? Would it be as simple as placing all the points on the Z line? Not at a PC right now so can’t load the software and try it myself!
Very usefull! Thank you! Just a info: Fusion 360 opens Simplify3D and show's the sendet model on my mac, no need to open Simplify3D first. Also does Simplify3D on Windows10. The difference between Mac and Win is, when I send a 2. model mac shows it in the same Simplify window, but Win opens a new window with the 2. model in it. What's a little confusing ist the animation of gears. I can tell one gear to move a amount of degrees when the driven gear moves another amount of degrees. Isn't there a automated way like with joints?
Hi Josef. Thanks for bringing that up. I looked into it and found out it was a security setting on my Mac that had prevented Cura from opening. I'm not sure I'm fully understanding what you're trying to do with the gears. What types of gears are they? There are two potential solutions - using contact sets or motion links.
@@ProductDesignOnline I think that if gears are used, the automation should be done via contact. A driver/motor conected to some gears and make them move and move/ drive something to see if the assembly works as planed bevore printing or make ba woodworking. I hope I was able to explain...as english isn't my native language. Thank you any how!! And thank you for sharing all you're very usefull videos!!

I am greatly confused with selecting the axes selecting while designing. Is there something to explain it a little more? I keep making mistakes and the sketch ends up on the wrong plane
Same here. I get 4 error messages (translated to english): Error: A problem occurred when combining geometry. When connecting/cutting/cutting, try to ensure that the bodies clearly overlap (problems can occur when surfaces and edges are almost coincident). Error: inconsistent edge-face relationships Error: The sweeping profile is not valid. Change the profile. Error: The sweeping profile is not valid. Change the profile. I've tried a lot but nothing helps. @Product Design Online Any advice? Anybody? Edit: I can use the plate top as profile for sweeping, but using the text as profile doesn't work.
Two things I find difficult, one using the joint command, I cant always determine how to orient the 3 axis icon so the parts mate properly, and two I have tried using the align command instead of joint but this fails somrtimes and gives and error indicating there is no geometry. If you made a tutorial on assembling components using both these features I would find it helpful.
This was an awesome video! Thanks! One question, is there anyway to reduce the distance the text comes up by? My text looks like it is coming out way higher than yours. I have tried adjusting the arc length and shape but it doesn't seem to work
Instead of just clicking twice on the same anchor, define a box over the entire object, then when the text dialog appears use the center left right and the center up down commands to center it in the box...
I have no idea what you mean with "(different files)", but this what I'm doing: I reboot, open the 2.0.7463 version of Fusion 360, I make a new file, go to sheet metal, go to top view, make a sketch on the bottom plane, using the mirror tool to complete (sketch is all constricted, as in having black lines), extrude with the flange tool, go to the Front, Left, and Right view, extruding normally the sides (I type 'e'}, then use the bend tool, then change the sketch geometry, press "finish sketch". Then go to the Back view, make another extrusion on the side face, try to use the bend tool, and I can't make a bend anymore (although sometimes it DOES work with a new file and the same steps). Wen the bend tool refuses, the flange tool still works fine, though. Or sometimes (new file) I make a sketch, use the flange tool to extract, then use the extract tool on the Front, Left, Right and Back sides, and the bend tool won't work at all. When I say that the bend tool doesn't work, I mean that I can open the bend tool, select a stationary plane, but that's all, no matter where I click or drag to make any bend, I can't complete the bend tool. It drives me bunkers. However, on the top (under the toolbar), I have yellow warning bar saying: "We are changing the startup subscription offering, please update your existing subscription now" Can this have anything to do with it?
@@RobNisters Hmm... If you're able to get a screen recording of that happening it would be super helpful. A post to the "Fusion 360 Support" forum with that will get the Engineers to look into it.
@@thebikeracer Gotcha. The only way to do that is to edit the Sketch that contains the sketch > double-click on the text itself > edit the name in the Text dialog > click OK. There's no way to utilize parameters with text to change it without editing the sketch. I hope this helps!

Constraints confuse me, I know what some of them are, I understand what they are for, but sometimes I am so confused as to what actually is constrained and what isn't!
Some misleading information in the video. Fusion360 can open Cura right from the dialog box. I do it all the time. If Cura does not open, then it is likely the executable is either different than Fusion is expecting or has moved. (Its not Fusions top priority to keep up with Cura builds.) Easy fix... select Custom from the slicer selection then within the Fusion interface, link it to the executable file on the HDD and save. Problem solved.

can i design the same with tinkercad or shapr3d ?
Great tutorial
Excellent Video, very well done. You do some great presentations, very well-paced.
One thing that confuses me is confusing to explain:
Extruding a cylinder for example to a rounded handle to create a mold sort of. I hope that makes since and I’ve been trying to figure out how to do that to create a friction fit for my VR controller. I’m trying to make a modification using a friction fit that connects to rounded surfaces together
What brand/model is the controller? I need to search for images so I can understand what you're referring to :)
Product Design Online Sorry I’m a month late.😂 It is the “Oculus Touch Controller” for my Oculus Quest.
@@HipBlackPoodle no worries :) I look into this and see what I can do... I have a friend with the Quest.. perhaps I can borrow it to test some things out. Cheers!
Hi as a very new b to both 3D and CAD (70 years young) finding it a slow progress, But had a go at the name plate and it worked Great thanks Sadly had 2 day working on your 30days to Furison 360 (in which your using an older UI) Just could not get it to work can only presume the 2 are not compatible, as i seen ok when were both on the same version?? your thankfully
Hi, Peter. have you watched my tutorial on the Cable clip? th-cam.com/video/XJRPnORhSRo/w-d-xo.html
You'll want to set up User Parameters for your dimension - that way you can simply edit the parameters to adjust the model to 125, 100, 90, 75mm, etc.
Cheers, Kevin
These videos are very helpful! Thanks
Thanks for the video i really enjoyed it. I sucessfully printed the name plate but the one of the extruded letters broke away easily from the plate. How can the text be inserted into the plate and extruded to give it more strength? Thanks
How can I do this with a picture? I have a outline of a flower. It wouldn't work for me when I tried the picture. Someone please help me
G'day Kevin
You asked a different question, when you said 'select ONE feature in fusion 360 that confuses me?'
Well as a new novice to the CAD world, I guess the the push-pull button as sometimes to goes the champers. Why does it do it?
Thanks
Greg
Hi Greg. Great question. Push Pull is one of the few commands that tries to be 'smart' and changes based on your selection. If you have faces selected it will become the Offset Faces command. If you have edges selected it will become the fillet command.
@@ProductDesignOnline
Thanks for that info.
Another a question though.
You mentioned in another video that 'NORMAL' is generally good enough to export a STL.
I've got anycubic photon mono resin printer. So what STL setting would you recommend for doing a M3 threaded model?
Happy3dmodeling
Greg
@@gregorychard the default export STL settings should be fine. what will be important is how you slice it in your 3D printer slicer. Make sure the layer resolution is small :)
@@ProductDesignOnline
Thanks for your help and time.
BTW I love your topics.
Greg
Kevin you ask us to tell you what we are having trouble with in Fusion 360?
I am having trouble making some cookie cutters for my wife. I can make the design but when it comes to the offset with a sharp image the offset breaks the line up.
Any help would be appreciated.
Hi Steve. Is your initial shape/extrude created with an SVG? If so, you may have to trace the design using Fusion 360's natigve Spline feature.
Very good!
i just want to extrude my text but not on an arc but i cannot find anything that helps me. fusion just wants to extrude the plane/block the text is sitting on and will not let me extrude the text what am i missing?
What font are you using? some fonts will not let you extrude the text without right clicking and selecting the explode option. Otherwise, you should be able to select the text... It will be highlighted in blue and then you can activate the Extrude command.
@@ProductDesignOnline yea I found a different video of yours that helped. I’m using a font it does not like. Even exploding it doesn’t let it. So I went with a different font. Your awesome Thank you.
Thanks for another great tutorial!
Can we use different fonts when creating these type of designs?
Yes. But please note that not all custom fonts are supported by Fusion.🙂
Can this be made using tinkercad
Can i download object or can get object from u instead of using fusion 360
Thanks for your tutorial, easy to follow even for me a novice, Like and regards from Spain.
Great work again.
I'm a little confused on transform mesh (.stl) files to BRep. I'm trying to have a standard 'way' to do that :-)
I think there is no standard way for that. Just trail and error
That's correct, it really depends on the geometry, as that influences how the translations is done :)
Product Design Online, thanks! I’ll do that and then check that video out next! :)
Great video and easy to follow.
sometimes just the steps. but you have done so much better explaining in your newer videos.
Glad to hear that, thanks Todd!
easy to follow thanks a lot!
thank you for your simple videos of how to use fusion 360
Ok, so while I was sleeping I thought about something so to to take this project to the next level. How hard would it be to make a slot or groove on the bottom to slide a led strip through it and it kind of shines through. So when groove is cut it goes through some of the letters. But idk how to do it.
Hi Todd. After creating the text you could create a sketch on the side of the sweep and do a simple extrude cut of that shape. The key would be to create a shape that allows for the shape of LED strip light, while also making sure it's 3D printable (hopefully without supports).
Nice video as always. Without giving away too much , I think you will really like the next Fusion update for videos like this. Looking forward to your new content after the next update. Sualp Ozel, Fusion 360, Additive Manufacturing product manager.
Thanks, Sualp! Really looking forward to the next update now :)

not sure why I am getting these.
I got it figured out.
This really helped me, thanks a lot! :}}}

In my Fusion 360 when in the 3D print dialog box it gives me a choice of "custom" and provides a folder icon to choose path to ,in my case the path to .exe file of Prusaslicer and it opens on "ok"

Great job. Thankyou.
hello, i tried to follow step by step.. my text doesnt raise at all.. any help?
Can you link to a screenshot so I can see what's going on?
@@ProductDesignOnline thanks Kevin I figured it out!
Thanks for sharing, Charlie! Covering more assembly methods is a topic I'll be covering more this year.
awesome video
This was an awesome video! Thanks! One question, is there anyway to reduce the distance the text comes up by? My text looks like it is coming out way higher than yours. I have tried adjusting the arc length and shape but it doesn't seem to work
Instead of just clicking twice on the same anchor, define a box over the entire object, then when the text dialog appears use the center left right and the center up down commands to center it in the box...
I'm really struggling with the bend tool in Sheet metal. Sometimes it works, sometimes not (on an extruded plate with the flange tool
Hmm... are you saying sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't with the same file or using Fusion 360 as a whole (different files)?
I have no idea what you mean with "(different files)", but this what I'm doing:
I reboot, open the 2.0.7463 version of Fusion 360, I make a new file, go to sheet metal, go to top view, make a sketch on the bottom plane, using the mirror tool to complete (sketch is all constricted, as in having black lines), extrude with the flange tool, go to the Front, Left, and Right view, extruding normally the sides (I type 'e'}, then use the bend tool, then change the sketch geometry, press "finish sketch".
A post to the "Fusion 360 Support" forum with that will get the Engineers to look into it.
thanks! this helps me alot
How would you create this and allow the name to be changed with a variable?
Are you wanting to change the text itself or the height/size of the text?
@@ProductDesignOnline Just the text. ie. Design it for Mike and then change the variable to Tracy or John. Something like that.
@@thebikeracer Gotcha. The only way to do that is to edit the Sketch that contains the sketch > double-click on the text itself > edit the name in the Text dialog > click OK. There's no way to utilize parameters with text to change it without editing the sketch. I hope this helps!
Making threads with a thread not in the drop down list. ex. 17 mm hole and a 1.75 pitch is confusing.
