Finally someone is talking about Engines rather than safety. People need to realize that engine is equally important as safety. If people complain about safety in suzuki, then they should even complain about engines in Tata. Nobody wants to burn their money in service centers. Indian brands need to know that how their service centers are looting money by adding unwanted things during service.
The BODY of the car takes more money than the ENGINE. A sh!tbox with a great engine is a DEATH TRAP! I won't shell out my hard earned money to buy a DEATH TRAP and I'm okay to spend more and get a TATA, VW, Skoda, etc. I don't mind paying for the repairs.
NA engines are best especially of Hondas... they r masterclass... Raw power of Naturally Aspirated engine is unmatched... involvement is also great! Even companies like Lamborghini still goes with NA engines as they believe it gives the best experience!
Suzuki has an edge in petrol engine development. More so, the Japanese manufactures are pioneering the hybrid tech with Atkinson cycle petrol engines. I feel these will still be popular for 2 decades at least.
Also to note : electric doesn't make sense for performance/ purpose built two wheels, where weight is a big factor , either on track or off road. Battery technology isn't advanced enough to keep the weight down and offer range for recreation activities outside city limits. Yes electric scooters make alot of sense as it's limited mostly within cities as it's primary purpose is only comuting for point A to point B.
29:45 No doubt 1.5 iVTEC is best in the NA category but there is a need for turbo engines..Not offering it just because it's expensive seems like an excuse because brands like VW/Skoda are offering it right from base variant in their cars and other brands are offering it in their Compact Suvs at much lesser price..Honda should change their game before it's too late.
@@sasstudio7671 Maruti Omni is RWD, Maruti Eco is RWD, Bolero is RWD, Scorpio is RWD, Innova is RWD, -- if you don't know anything it is better not make fool out of yourself!
AISIN gearbox the 6 speed torque converter is a gem it's now being used by so many manufacturers. AISIN partially Owned by Toyota so it's quiet reliable as well. 🤘🏻💯
Tata 's 1.2 L & 1.5 L GDI will address their engine issues and these two may be their last engines, coz the company is investing more into electric, H2 powertrains and so on.. Tata have strong plans for their future powertrains. But as per me, they should also invest into one more mpi (1.2L)motor which can power a wide range of cars in under 4m category (coz the 1.2L GDI will be more expensive) . Investing into a 1.2L mpi in 2024 will definitely make sense for tata motors. When it comes the performance of revotron petrols, they aren't so refined and power delivery is so so and reliability is okay..the reason for these issues is the age of that engine, the revotron was introduced in 2014. They have used the max. of that engine without much investments. Yeah, hope tata will address this in the future 🤞🏼
Just feel that Ford produced such state of the art engines way ahead of time as dragon series 3 cylinder which was a lot better than many 4 cylinders including their own. Not just good efficiency and emission norms, it had class leading power torque figures and high revving nature with brisk performance. Tough luck Ford, now Maruti has done a similar engine bragging about every single thing about the Z series which you folks didn't do enough. Rip small diesels and small 4 cylinders ! - From a Zen MH410 fan 🙃
Was great listening to you both, especially Hormazd, I've just moved from City NA (1.5 iVTEC/CVT) to Carens Turbo Petrol (1.5/7DCT) . I must say I miss the flexible nature of that gem of Honda tech which almost sang in part throttle. Whereas turbo petrol in Carens is tuned for fuel efficiency and it's almost dead in lower rpms needs a lot of stick to be woken up and when it wakes up it's gets a move on. I was forced to move to Carens as my family outgrew the City.
The Japanese have shown us the right way of transfer from ICE to electric..Its not a sudden leap..The Hybrid tech has helped the ICE engines to stay longer..They are not going to leave us any time soon..Even in developed countries peopel still prefer hybrid cars for long distance travel because of the risks associated with the charging of electric vehicles..And for a Market like India cost effective hybrid will be a boon..And thats why I am looking forward to the series hybrid tech that Maruti is developing..
I think electric will be one among many fuel types. Hydrogen might be an option as well. The refilling time is similar to ICE and it needs a smaller battery. Again it’d be how green the hydrogen will be and I think big companies are investing in it.
We should stop copying european emissions standards here. Those are too restrictive for an emerging economy like us. Proposed Euro7 standards are insane. If implemented as is in India, it would be a huge burden on our middle class.
Have been watching autocar videos since very long time. But this must be the video which I enjoyed a lot. This is a really interesting topic for me. Thank you 🎉

@18:20 I believe Tata should have gotten some concessions from Fiat because they are in a JV, not only that they have manufactured engines for them and also they are their long time customers as well. So, Tata should have been given some leeway to modify those engines for their requirements. Just like what Aston Martin is doing with Mercedes AMG engines. (Caveat here is they got this permission post negotiation with Mercedes).
Kia strategy was spot on and it won’t fade away anytime soon! They have established themselves as top 5 car makers of India. Numerous options, great design and features, good road presence; only thing they have to do is up the safety game!
Enjoyed watching..great job Autocar team.. consider doing podcast on Transmission options available in India, the ADAS system, the Alternative Fuel Strategy in India (CNG, H-ICE, Fuel Cell, Flex Fuel) and the New Trend in the Infotainment and Instrument Cluster in new vehicles
Congratulations to mr. Hormazd and mr. Sergius for a wonderful program. Look forward to a podcast on the different types of automatic transmissions available in the Indian market presently.
Dear Suzuki Engines are great for Indian Market only, Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka Because we use Wisley not ruff like Middle East, US and EU That's why Suzuki is good in our County
The jury is still out on the engine race. But so far as the indepth knowledge and understanding of the automotive industry is concerned, the verdict is very clear: Hormazd Sorabjee is a force to reckon with.
Mahindra's investment in Korean car manufacturer SsangYong has paid them more dividends. The engines, gearbox, quality of the product, fit and finish is all because of the alliance they had with them.
Excellent!!! thanks a lot for sharing so much of knowledge. Its helping us in purchase decisions. Gods of Automobile Knowledge, Pls continue such interesting content. Thanks Again. Looking forward to next saturday.

U need to explain how the 1litre Skoda or Vw engine is good? U say, u need to keep them raved for slow speeds, it's fuel economy is unpredictable and I found it is not good with vibrations at city speeds. They have removed the badging of TSI for 1litre. Is it not TSI now?
Dear mr hormazd and the autocar team please organise a podcast with an automobile engine designer. Lately there are many videos regarding sn+ grade engine oils for gdi automobile engines to prevent low speed pre ignition (LSPI). Will be grateful for more technical information on this subject. Also is LSPI and detonation the same. If they are different then please provide more insight. Thank you very much.
Offer people an option. In my opinion, a hybrid is a better option overall in terms of mileage than an EV since I'm not ready for an EV.I'm still driving my 2014 Mitsubishi Pajero strong after 3,10,000 kilometers! EVs will never be able to match it. A discussion on how this government would repeal the pointless legislation regarding internal combustion engines, vehicle scrapping, and other issues is what I would prefer to see and question the Government as leading House of Journalism
Best engines in the market as of now - 1. *Mahindra* - They have all engines avaliable from 1.2 gdi to 1.5 diesel to 2.0 smoothest petrol engine and world class 2.2 hwak which are already at par with the future emission norms for atleast 10 years and also EV 2 Hyundai/KIA - Having all possible engines and transmission options from 1.2 , 1.5 na , turbo , diesel etc and the most refined 1.5 diesel ever made with options of cng also 3. Tata - The leader of EV market in india with good engines down the bracket in tiago, altroz , nexon but only has 2.0:diesel for higher stature cars and arent able to make the 1.5 turbo since the past 5 years. 4. Maruti - Still providing the most refined 1.2 and 1.5 petrols in the country and now with the jv of toyota hybrid is in their grasp , but surely with even one diesel maruti would have been on top. 5. Vw/skoda - Both the 1.0 and 1.5 tsi are gems of engines that helped them grab the whole sedan market , the diesel gate has put a hole in their pocket which could have given them 5x more sales. 6. Toyota - Big bulky engines noisy like a truck but hence relaible , only plus point is they have hybrid and the toyota badge that can sell anything. 7. Honda - Its evidently clear the ivtec is old now no new buyers wants the ivtec now that can be seen in sales , not working on a turbo , closing their diesel and not working on a hybrid its a steep hill. 8. Renault/Nissan - Though their 1.0 turbo is good but yet not refined all other engnines are no where near the competetion. 9. Jeep - Only good side is that they have their parent comapny fiat engine , otherwise nothing is good for jeep in india
Given the size of our country and the long distances we love to travel on our holidays, ICE will be there for a while. Absolutely correct when you say we will be the last men standing on the ICE engines. What's the point of fun driving on Indian cities...the avg speed is only 30km/hour.... For most bharatiyas ,mileage is only priority in bumper to bumper traffic
Good to hear you talking on engines. Is it possible for you to talk about Primary and Secondary Imbalance and Shafts therein to reduce engine vibration? Bad Quality of Engine Mouting Pads; which results into so many safety issues. Which all car manufacturers have Worked on Primary and Secondary Imbalance Shafts into their engines?
There isn't a timeline set as yet. With EVs in the horizon there's a lot of thought about if it's worth investing in another round of emission standards
Miss those days not very long back when we used to have smooth, frugal and torquey diesel engines ruling the market and noisy 3cyl petrols used to be reserved for cheaper cars only.
would like a podcast on hot hatchbacks in India. Can we expect more powerful and fun engines like in the range of 200 hp in hatchback which is completely absent. Also comment on Hyundai i20 N line and the coming Tata Altroz Racer. Will Hyundai bring i20 N or ioniq N in India.
IC engines are history - is there any point in developing anything new here? Even if EVs don’t penetrate the Indian market to that extent, there is hardly any point in wasting money on new IC engines, as ever tightening emission norms will make this tech redundant. Most manufacturers will just carry on with the existing tech - developing anything new in ICE is like throwing good money after bad...
It's not just Tata, even Hyundai & Kia got small D engines with LNT. I honestly do not see a future for Diesel engines without SCR. So, that means its end of life for small capacity Diesels if not already. And that's better given the impact climate change is having on India. The rich countries aren't going to bear the issues with rise in temperatures, it will be mainly Asia & Africa. And whoever is bringing up the impact of electricity production with power plant, please pay attention to the thick black smoke belching fuel tankers running the length and breadth of this country - it is scary. Add the growing number of sugarcane juice tankers to that mix and I can't wait to see the end of Diesel engines here. I know this because I live next to a refinery and those slow and massively polluting fuel tankers are a mess on the roads.
Since no company is investing in new engines, why they cannot pick best engines and use them in all their cars.for example 1.5 diesel from hyundai.2.2 diesel from mahindra.1.5 petrol from maruti or Hyundai etc.
Finally some great insights and thanks again for the podcast, can you take up on why not many plug in hybrids in India and what’s the road map like if any ? Thanks
Tata commercial ev experience here. Our grid supply is very dirty with spikes and voltage drops.. You charge the ev at night and next morning fault has shown and charging was only 2 3 %. What do you do to fix your grid supply?
I think Indians need to understand how bad Electric Vehicles are. Everything is dictate controlled. If a car company decides, they can brick your car. If they decide, they can install software on your vehicle that drains the battery faster, similar to a phone. And yes, these practises may not be happening now, but in the future, it's guaranteed this will happen, to artificially boost car sales. Companies need to please investors and not consumers.
how reducing ones car battery life through companies by installing different malfunctions in their own cars will boost car sales??? Rather it will harm companies reputation,,, as in long term review,, in near future, market will adapt to battery functions and its maintenance like a local shop would be able to rectify issues... Every time competition evolves around the technology itself....
You've forgotten the great Ford's 1.5(D) on Aspire,Figo... One Hundred HP & 26-28Kmpl if you drive below 110KMPH..190KMPH and still there's some stamina..woww!!!
I think with this upcoming engines adopted by Maruti Suzuki Swift is a bit experimental because they are collaborating and doing lots of studies behind to bring some good exaggerated gem of engine which will be equally refining without disturbing its NVH level in the near future and without compromising a hitch of performance 🌹
Diesel is here to stay because Hyundai/Kia and Toyota are here to stay. Both the brands build the best diesel engines. None of the diesels from other brands stand a chance. My bet would be a diesel TC and I wouldn't bet on Turbo petrol because DCT/DSG is not built for India or Indian traffic conditions,. It's basically built for stuttgart and can't be used in Bangalore 😂😂
Look at ev infrastructure in India, forget 2030, even 2040 is not at all practical, And why EV, practically hybrid will be the best option.. "Cars without engine are not cars" most of the enthusiasts across the world strongly share this sentiment..
india being a land of marvellous engineers and engineering colleges producing greatest minds, its a pity that we cannot develop a transmission of our own, like ASIN or a engine like that of Fiat or a world class made in India transmission running global cars.
It will never happen. Our country believes in made in other countries products more than made in India. Plus, majority of the engineers are looking for jobs in sectors where they can earn quick money. How many of them wants to be in the core industries? Automobile/automotive industry is so small scale it's hard for freshers to take a piece of it. Our country also doesn't support automotive enthusiastic culture. That is the reason media talks about 10" screens inside a so called "SUV" rather than talking about how much power it makes. So, bottom line, our country is never going to make any original engines, or cars like mazda miata which are fun to drive, or awesome transmissions, or aftermarket performance parts.
Diesel engines may fade out. But manufacturers will find ways to overcome challenges. Diesel availability will always there, heavy vehicles need it more

Diesel engines are still value for money in long term. The reliability, economy and drive experience is unparalleled.
Confused btw Kia Sonet diesel auto and Xuv 3xo auto? Which one to buy??
Indian oil extra green diesel is also there so pollution is not prime reason to switch
Is buying a used innova 2015 worth it?
Diesels will be first to gone , whether u agree or not it is fact

Even if EVs don’t penetrate the Indian market to that extent, there is hardly any point in wasting money on new IC engines, as ever tightening emission norms will make this tech redundant. Most manufacturers will just carry on with the existing tech - developing anything new in ICE is like throwing good money after bad...
There should be a session on safety too.
ICE engines still rules & here to stay
There are two types of ice engines
Vw group and others
They are just way ahead of the competition.
Lets do a pidcast on how synthetic fuels can give ICE a new lease of life
Thanks fr infos , you guys r genius and passion is heard fr you .
Very informative discussion! Loved it! Looking forward to more.
Fantastic podcast! This has now become a weekly routine for me!
I like the episode. So deep and precise.
Thanks
Only Maruti, Toyota, Tata, Mahindra and the Korean twins have a future in the Indian seem market.
Rest all manufacturers can plan for their exit.
I think all these companies shd consult hormazd before making stupid decisions,he knows what really works in India and what doesn't
When the discussion goes into VW, they joy to ride triumphs! The speakers switched to feel mode.
Tata commercial ev experience here.
Our grid supply is very dirty with spikes and voltage drops..
You charge the ev at night and next morning fault has shown and charging was only 2 3 %.
What do you do to fix your grid supply?
Great video! Comprehensive and easy to understand
Would buy a Hybrid because of Best of both ICE & EVs.
It improves efficency hence affordable option.
Ice still good as long it remains reliable, durable and easy to work on in long run.it should be simple and easy to work on.
If car manufacturers put these chairs in the third row, that would e the best 3rd row
You've forgotten the great Ford's 1.5(D) on Aspire,Figo...
One Hundred HP & 26-28Kmpl if you drive below 110KMPH..190KMPH and still there's some stamina..woww!!!
Confused btw Kia Sonet diesel auto and Xuv 3xo auto? Which one to buy??
what is Cafe?
Corporate Average Fuel Economy.
I think with this upcoming engines adopted by Maruti Suzuki Swift is a bit experimental because they are collaborating and doing lots of studies behind to bring some good exaggerated gem of engine which will be equally refining without disturbing its NVH level in the near future and without compromising a hitch of performance 🌹
tata’s 3 cylinder 1.2 is an awesome accelerator though❤❤
ICE engines are engineering marvel!!!
I like the comments and insight from Hormazd
Really some insightful content. Loved it ❤
Diesel is here to stay because Hyundai/Kia and Toyota are here to stay.
Mahindra engines are way way better than Hyundai and fiats, it as good as Toyota's
Brilliant discussion
Look at ev infrastructure in India, forget 2030, even 2040 is not at all practical,
And why EV, practically hybrid will be the best option..
"Cars without engine are not cars" most of the enthusiasts across the world strongly share this sentiment..
These technicall podcasts are awesome
india being a land of marvellous engineers and engineering colleges producing greatest minds, its a pity that we cannot develop a transmission of our own, like ASIN or a engine like that of Fiat or a world class made in India transmission running global cars.
Mahindra's Scorpio n/XUV 700 engines are way way better than fiat mutijet engine
Diesel availability will always there, heavy vehicles need it more
Honda, give us the Civic back, please 🥺🙏
@autocarindia1- Next discussion on biofuels especially Hydrogen blend with CNG as part of Ministry of Road Transport and Highways to cut imported natural gas cost. More technical with easy understood discussion on Flex fuel future in next 5 years to support ICE engine ecosystem.
Is the Hyundai Venue 1.0L Turbo engine a long stroke engine?
The only option of ICE cars are to go hybrid - build cars with high fuel efficiency
These batteries of hybrid cars … are they environmentally friendly when they will be disposed ?
