Toei Animators redraw Dragon ball Super's latest film Dragon Ball Super: Superhero is a sentence I never thought I'd get to say and in celebration of the new film I reached out to a bunch of Toei animators on twitter to see if they'd be up to the challege! This is the result!

lmao. If by "Top tier animators" you mean animators who've barely done any real good looking work. You aren't gonna see top tier animators doing any of these, mainly because most are Japanese and the other being lack of free time.

The filters at the end always make the art crazy, it would be cool to see some sort of video or explanation of that process in the future

I'm sorry but I'll have to disagree. They're regular animators not Toei. They don't have any control over what Toei does and Toei didn't ask them to do something for Mark. Toei execs still sucks

And man I wish Barkarott could just draw everything lmao. His angular art style is refreshing in this era of rounder animation, and yet nostalgic for how intense anime used to be.
I'm really glad to see Dragon Ball content returning after what happened. Especially the art videos like these. Seeing how these artists handle the material is inspiring as I'm trying to get the motivation to get back into art.

What happened?
@@juaniferritto165 The short version is that Toei over last Christmas went through and manually claimed 100+ of Mark's videos, nearly resulting in his channel being nuked from orbit. The problem's gone and, shockingly, TH-cam actually went to bat for Mark. Although that took more than a month to reconcile.

Bruh Mark went from getting hundreds of copyright claims, to working with multiple Toei animators. What a legend.
This was is a real treat, all of the frames that I saw look amazing! That being said it sounded like Mark was going through things slightly faster than felt natural - from my perspective. Also thank you for the thorough apoiler warning and amazing work!
I think because compared to other videos, the people drawing are people trained to draw very fast, very well. So he has to narrate less and faster.

While I do think this movie has some of the best 3D animation I've seen in any anime so far, DBS Broly is still my favorite style I've seen in all of Dragonball. Was never a big fan of Super's animation even when they improved on it it just never sat right with me. Then when Broly came out I was in pure awe of how great it looked and go back and watch it again every once in a while to soak in that great animation again. I was really hoping this movie was going to be in that same style again and while I am bummed it isn't I'm but still impressed with how well the 3D looks.

Yea… and it’s just gonna add ammo to all the haters. People think because they see a few frames drawn 2d that they should have just done the whole movie that way. People have no idea how this stuff works.

I honestly believe the bad parts of Broly and RoF look worse than the bad parts of SH. Do y’all not remember how horrible the cgi looked in those movies? It was literally ps3 graphics. Super Hero literally changed the game for Anime movies using cgi. They’ve raised the bar.

DBS Super Hero doesnt look bad at all, really. but when compared to the drawings in these videos, the contrast between the two are just insane. It looks awesome man, I really lost my interest in the new movie a while ago, but watching the re-drawing here makes me want to watch it, though in 2D!

These Are Insane! I’m Hoping To See The Same Concept Of Redrawing Shots In Anime Applied To One Piece; That Would Be Amazing!
Mark went from being against toei to workin with toei animators
This tells us a lot about society
Character development for both parties

the toei animators are not Toei. They have nothing to do with the strikes
My main issue with the Brolly movie was the random like minute of CGI at the most intense point of the fight that 100% made it look like a video game. Made me not even wanna watch this movie.
The movie actually doesn’t look bad, I was really skeptical at first with the first shots we saw it looked sorta weird but now seeing some scenes It’s more of a 2.5 D cgi, and it allows them to still do really cool art and make it flow real nice.
The problem with CGI is that it's often harder to do the exaggerated movements and expressions that are often attributed with beautiful animation. As much as the scientist in me wants to argue that the animation could only get better if all of the characters are forced on-model, but the artist in me knows that sometimes having an arm/leg stretch or a foot/hand enlarge during at cinematic shot that it could increase the dynamic feel of the scene and accentuate the choreography.
Additionally, without extensive use of motion capture, most CG-rendered action scenes look/feel really weightless and stiff (often because the animators tend to miss more subtle things like how a piece of clothing would realistically react to certain movements and changes in speed.
Wdym this cgi was really expressive though all the fights had amazing choreography as well.
@@ddg_snipa0187 Through the main fights (the ones involving Gohan, Piccolo, the Gamma Twins, and Cell Max) it looked really good, but during most other scenes, such as Goku & Vegeta sparring with Broly or any of the joke scenes, everything else's movements look as stiff and lifeless as any cheap episode of DBZ or DBS (as opposed to the DBS Broly movie and other beautifully animated anime movies like Summer Wars, the Rebuild of Evangelion, or the more recent Gundam movies where everything including the slice of life shots feel fluid and natural).

@@Madara8989 yeah, I mean some people didn’t like how broly looked and i don’t understand that, it was beautiful, and I wanted that to be the main style of DBS for the future, I’d let them take as much time as they want if everything got to look like that. Now obviously it’s not possible but if it was I’d want that lol 😂
it would be really cool if mark was to take shots from different manga/anime he’s reviewed and converted them to a dragon ball style

It blows my mind that this is the same channel that was being hounded by Toei's legal team for about a month.
Glad things seem to finally be resolved.

I am SO glad that I waited to finish this video after watching the film! That last SPOILER segment was well worth watching on the big screen!
This video makes me wonder, for the fans of Dragon Ball in Japan. Do they miss the OG art style of DBZ? Do they talk about it as much? Has anyone from Toei talked about going back to the original art style instead of how the anime of Super looked like. And plus, why the change of the art styles in the first place? Personally, if the anime had the art style of Fusion Reborn, Wrath of the Dragon or just the Buu saga really. Seeing correct body proportions, colors and blood from the Buu saga would have been a dream come true! Super Broly was the closest we've gotten to the original DBZ anime but if it was exactly like the Buu saga, I would die a happy man! and also Bardock meeting Goku lol
A bit late but for what I've seen on Twitter and YT they miss it as much as we do, also one of the main japanese animators that joined the series almost to the end Yuya Takahashi portrayed that into his work because he is a big fan of that style too (he was the one behind episodes such as 114 and 122 and did some of the scenes for Broly that you might have referenced in your comment ) also the main character designer for Super hero Chikashi Kubota follows the same trend as well. So to sum things up yeah Japanese ppl and animators miss it too.
The main reason Super didn't look anything like dbz was mainly because of his former character designer which was Tadayoshi Yamamuro who funny enough was the man behind those old dbz movies but sadly time didn't go well for him and decided to change his artstyle to something that in his own words was more modern and stylish but fans nor animators didn't like it. Happily he is now gone for good and new ppl with more innovative and better artstyles such as Naohiro Shintani and Chikashi Kubota have joined the series as Character designers so DB is in good hands for now as long as they don't decide to bring Yamamuro back, hopefully.

Just wanted to point out that I love the Mega Man X stuff you put on these videos, from the X7-X8 Stage Select sounds to the MHX's Warning. Truly top notch.
CGI has to be used for Special Effects, but not for the whole movie. It made the movie Look Like "gewollt aber nicht gekonnt" or "gekonnt aber nicht gewollt". Disgustiung Movie. Good Story but very disgustiung Image-Build.

The movie was good but I still prefer the traditional style.
Thats a flattering angle for [SPOILER], the side profile shots really look ridiculous, the hair is just massive and unappealing in a way SS3 isn't for some reason.
The final new transformation hair on gohan looks so bad in cgi lol... don’t know what they were thinking abandoning DBS Broly style after such success... hopefully this is just experimental and is never done again...
I didn't mind the animation too much in the film, except I agree with goku/vegeta fight scenes looked off. But these just show that the 3d can't hold a candle to the 2d style for dragonball.

a new dragonball show or movie in a modern dbz classic style must happen nothing beats that i dont care if im bias its has soul and yes i love superhero the movie its missing depth and he just transformed without the heavy feel like for e.g gohan had when turning ss2 in cell saga that combine with this art will be perfection

What excites me the most is that these are ACTUAL animators that have worked for Toei and their art and animation look astonishing and fits Dragonball so well.
Imagine how beautiful a new Db anime would look nowadays considering Toei is now hiring overseas employees for their projects and some of them like the ones in this video have actual passion for this series and can produce high quality work. This thought is what excites me the most of a possible new Db anime, Imagine how beautiful It'd look like 🥲

It’s amazing how many of these are nailed on the first try! I enjoy the final results of both Mark’s crew and the Toei animators, but there is an undeniable experience that is employed by the Toei animators to make the process look easy and seamless.

Gohan Blanko actually being a thing now only makes my expectations towards the movie plummet, if it was down to 0 then now it’s just breaking the restrictions of reality and going down to negatives
The fact that they’d make a fan service bull crap a real thing and making Gohan physically look like his better self hurts me

Superhero is a nice watch, piccolo gets spotlight. Its more lighthearted. Callback to classic Dragonball. Sometimes Dragonball shines with some peaceful character scenes.
