Me too! It's so mesmorising watching the master at work! Just seeing him draw in his iconic style takes me right back to my school days! I used to draw all sorts of Toriyama style characters (including my own) during lessons when I was bored. I used to get into trouble for drawing in my school books, but I don't regret it for a second because those drawings took me into another world away from the real one.

Don't stereotype the mangaka life, it comes in many forms, this is his personal experience growing up in a different time, a different country, and a different economy,
Remember the dragon ball the anime came out in 1986,
I couldn't find an exact release date for the manga, but the earliest I could find was issue No. 51 being released in 1984
And when he spoke about becoming a manga artist and going through hard times, and even working in an advertising company, that was way before he started work on dragon ball,
I just want to make sure people aren't misled, this teaches us about being a manga artist an entire lifetime ago,
Most artists are using hacks to put work out quicker these days, ofcourse using digital art, but comic artists also take a lot of noticeable shortcuts to get the stories out

I remember drawing goku and pals, naruto, sonic, and sometimes - since I was a teenage boy with raging hormones, I’d draw hentai, nood anime characters having sex. Like bulma and goku, Sakura with naruto, Hinata with goku etc. I’d even draw my female classmates and myself in one 😂 I once got caught and they just said I draw really well. And I should be an artist.

To know he never really cared about manga or cartooning in general, only to become one of the most influential commercial artist in modern media is just hilarious and astounding. Among other insights on how he feels about the characters and the story; this is such a dope interview.

It makes me appreciate the wholesome Shonen-y moments in DB more now knowing that they weren't forced, and that the moments that did happen were organic to the story and done exactly how Toriyama wanted them done.

Oda's thoughts on the sudden loss of Toriyama:
[From Comic Book Resources, translated official One Piece Reddit] forum Oda's statement into English.
    It is too early.
The hole is too big. Sadness washes over me when I think that I will never see him again.
I have admired him so much since I was a child, so I remember the day he called me by name for the first time. On the way home from the day you used the word "friend" for me and Kishimoto, I remember being overjoyed with Kishimoto. I also remember the last conversation we had.
I was one of those who took the baton from the days when reading manga made you a fool, and he also created an era when both adults and children could enjoy reading manga. He showed us the dream that manga can go worldwide. It was like watching a hero going forward.
For not only mangakas but also creators in various industries, the excitement and emotion of the time of Dragon Ball serialization must have taken root in their childhood. His existence is like a big tree.
For the manga artists of our generation who stood on the same stage, Toriyama's works became more and more important to me as I got closer to the same stage. I even felt being scary. But I am just happy to see the aloof man himself again. Because we love him on a blood level.
With respect and gratitude for the creative world he has left behind. I pray for his soulful rest in peace.
May heaven be the joyous world he envisioned.

Honestly, there was a point in time where I had lost appreciation for Dragon Ball and Toriyama himself because of the toxic fandom, but I've grown as a person as well as an artist, and I really have a newfound appreciation for him. His art style is simple, but he had a really great understanding of anatomy and colouring. I wouldn't call him the greatest writer, but he was still a genius in his own way and managed to tell fairly great stories, regardless. Not to mention how much of a humble person he seemed to be.
I wish I hadn't let my distaste for the fandom get to me like that, but I've learned to separate the positive from the negative and appreciate Toriyama for what he's done in his own right.
