The strategy of creating many characters has the short-term gain of keeping the audience from feeling safe about the fates of main characters, but it takes on a long-term debt to resolve all those character arcs satisfactorily and roughly at the same time. @WheresPoochie 5 ปีที่แล้ว +22

The problem is less that the Night King died early on but more that his death had little to no impact on the remaining narrative. At one point I thought that the Battle of Winterfell would significantly diminish Dany's forces and/or the morale of the North but nope, things were scantly changed.
It's really less about the plot points and more of the journey between them that the show completely botched.

@@WheresPoochie you're right. The show writers basically violated the fundamental rules of film/ scene writing. Each successive scene needs to involve a goal/ conflict/ & change and build on those before it. Within a series, that same arc needs to occur within each episode, & each season & overall. It is super difficult. In the end, it was too much for these writers to accomplish w/o the details of GRRM's books. Yes he gave them the outline but it's not the same

What I love about the world GRRM has created and the way he writes is that we get the sense that the Seven Kingdoms and the war for the Iron Throne feel like an entity in themselves. It's a huge, dynamic, ever-changing web of motivations and allegiances, and a lot of people in this story exist at the mercy of it unless they know how to "play the game".
To me that's what makes ASOIAF stand tall in the fantasy genre--through these many perspectives, we get a glimpse into that terrifying, cold, brutal machine that serves as the heart of the story

He wrote himself into a corner with how many side stories there are. This is a major reason as to why he may never finish the story. Tolkien told a masterful epic story that focused on only the most important aspects. George has spent so much time on details not needed to tell the story.
He should have saved some of these sideplots for novelettes published after ASOIAF.

Also, I think his answer in the interview pretty much sums it up. You can't tell the entire story of WW2 from one perspective. Yeah, and you also can't tell the entire 'complete' story of WW2 in a 5 book trilogy. You could in fact write an entire 5 book trilogy on WW2 from the perspective of a single person. He definitely bit off more than he could chew.

@Atlas Rise Consider that perhaps Ice & Fire apply to more than a single individual or faction. George likes to let you think you have figured something out only to reverse it or reveal that it meant something else. Yes on the surface, Ice is the White Walkers and Fire the journey of Dany but it could also be Jon as both Ice & Fire and his internal conflicts plus as an added point when the Starks and Dany come into conflict in regards to the North, Jon has to decide where his loyalties lay. The show ended exactly in this way.
