i read this years ago and i think i was too young to appreciate it, though even at the time i sensed i was reading something deep and literary. i'd like to revisit it
Interesting take on Sanderson's (among others) magic systems and rules. 'Hard magic' would be an oximoron, closer to 'soft science' or 'magical science'. Magic cannot be 'hard' (or systematically) because it should be unpredictable; a power we cannot tame completely, rather, just be able to barely grasp it.
but there's no "should", it's magic, it's what we want it to be and a storytelling tool, even if, with time, i got to the point of preferring grrm style of magic, i0m glad that we can have both
@@dakard1the only problem is that everything that we fully understand stops being called magic/miracles. Of course it’s a great idea to create these powers, but in the world where people understand them, it should either start being called physics of that world or technology (which is also based on physics specific for that world)
I like both, but I think there may be a point where hard magic systems just becomes its own genre. I dig Mistborn, but I'd compare it more to something like X-Men or the Matrix than Lord of the Rings or ASOIAF.
I'm so glad to see how excited George was to meet Philip because His Dark Materials was my favourite story, now it's tied with ASOIAF, and I wish I could go to the timeline/multiverse where Philip wasn't sick and did make it (typing this while I paused the video at the 15:35 mark) so I could see them talk about adaptations. I would pay A LOT of money to see that convo between those two authors because they both wrote such complex stories and are so different, but they also have a lot in common. What I wouldn't give to have see that convo...
I’ve been saying this exact thing about magic “systems.” If it has rules it’s not magic, it’s that world’s physics or chemistry. In common speech “it’s just magic” is what one says when something can’t be explained.
A Sea Snake Prequel is the first adaptation I've been excited about since the show surpassed the books. Lots of good questions getting rushed through. I wish they could just let this man talk all day
Can't watch right now but wanted to leave some general words of support in the meantime so: Support! Backing! Encouragement! Bolster! Fortify! Advocate!
This interview was better than most. If George had given the Scarlett ohara speech when explaining adaptation again I would have closed the video. I am glad he gave straight forward answers.
Those who wanted to know what i was going to ask about rhaegar, i wanted to ask him what was rhaegar like was he similar to dany at all, we only have small information on him, i wanted to know what his plan was for aerys and just more information about rhaegar as a whole
Now that was a good question, since Dany is compared to Rhaegar often but he had his own qualities that distinguished him from others, as we all do, such as his affection for books; "bookish to a fault" , "Baelor the Blessed born again"- until he learned he was going to have to become a knight, I wonder how he came to that conclusion, and what kind of books was he reading? I wonder if the library of the Red Keep still has those books shelved, if he forgot some of his things in Summerhall and could they still be there? How could he go so mad with prophecy as to abandon his wife and kids when the dynasty was at their most vulnerable? (Something that is unforgivable, given the consequences of that impulse) and what was he planning to do with Lyanna? If he returned home safe, was he planning on having two wives like Aegon the Conqueror? That's a possibility. Did he tell Lyanna about the prophecy at all? Sorry to bombard you with my train of thought, heh
3:30 I've always seen sci-fi and fantasy as two sides of the same coin. They're just different set dressings. In sci-fi you have amazing technology or scientific reasons for superhuman powers, in fantasy it's just called magic instead. You can even blend the two seamlessly as Star Wars and other franchises do.
GoT I could see him not being fond of nowadays for obvious reasons but he's been pretty positive about HOTD specifically. Not sure why everyone automatically assumes he secretly hates the show just because he made a blog post talking about how one piece of heraldry is technically inaccurate. Why would he go out of his way to do occasional production visits or be friendly with the showrunners and cast or also be visiting the set of an upcoming second prequel series if he had a massive negative opinion of all of it? He might not even be alluding to anything GoT related in that segment considering he actually worked as writing staff for TV way before ASOIAF blew up.
9:40 Yes, thats how they messed up House of the Dragon, Helaena just says "Aemond You'll Die" like wtf. Dragon Dreams don't work like that, its messy, they misinterpret it, which ends in a disaster. Aemond/Daemon's final battle should not even be a prophecy, theres nothing to chase like with prophecy of azor ahai. Even the dreams are so on the nose, why would they show dany? Show a person with a flaming sword or a baby, a savage and which transforming into a dragon idk man its so dumb what they did. I can see why Martin is pissed.
We'll see about that... do scream of happiness in this comment section if the book is announced so that I can be notified and hopefully share the joy with fans
@@oxfordwritershouse What a fantastic video, thank you for this insightful conversation. One minor niggle is the audio stutters at high frequencies but at low levels its fine.
This man is such an amazing author. It would be a tragedy if he doesn't finish A Song Of Ice & Fire. It is looking less and less likely now that he is in his mid 70's and the TV show adaptation climaxed years ago with their version of the ending. He did mention a couple of years ago, however, that he was 75% of the way through completing Winds Of Winter. So I've still got my fingers crossed. Come on, George!
For sure. It is a tragedy :(. Would have been the best series ever but I still love those books so much. It’s just heartbreaking that we will never know how it ends :(
An amazing author? Before GOT final season landed he stated the ending was faithful to his plans, only to come back on his own words after he saw all the criticisms saying it would actually be different 😅😅😅
@@EC-mg4gb and last year he said that the more he writes the more the story deviates from the show, so no the ending is different. and not only the ending, almost everthing since season 4 (half of season 4 aswell)
You'd think the person who asked about animated series, would've already seen the countless articles and tweets that have been mentioning them in works for weeks??
I think GRRM would actually change one key thing - he would never have abandoned the timeskip he wrote into the narrative after ASOS in ~2000-2002. Abandoning it cost him years of work and momentum and created more narrative problems than it solved.
G.R.R.M.: "If there was one thing I would change about my books, is they would be finished." Me: Well, you're the only one who can make that happen, Mr. George. But I understand the challenge, as a writer currently writing what I pray will be my debut novel, just about three years now. Two and a half simce I started the manuscript. It's easy to write; it's difficult to write well. So, prayerfully it doesn't take me another decade and a half to write this book.
Me gustaría que por lo menos a él lo dejaran hacer todos los cambios que quiera, si tuviera que rehacer alguno de sus libros ya publicados y eso le permitiera un mejor final a sus ojos, que por algo es el autor, lo hiciera.
I know this may be unpopular, but I’m less interested in brans magic and more interested in aryas magic with the faceless men. I feel like that would be a great spinoff
If you read through all the lines when George talks about adaptations, he is saying how terrible GoT was finished. And how D&D/HBO screwed it up. However, HBO did want to do more seasons but ironically D&D rushed it to write Star Wars - which then Disney replaced them because of how bad S8 of GoT was
I’m in agreement, and with many other authors, with his thoughts on faithful adaptations. I’ve loved many books turned into movies and tv, and I’ve sometimes managed to begrudgingly enjoy it. But sometimes, for example, The Dark Tower, and many, many other adaptations just don’t fit. They don’t sit right with me, and many other fans, and I can’t understand why so many changes are made because the marital for the basis is most times far superior to the adaptation. This happens so often, you’d think something would click and they’d get it. I fully support authors, and I doubt many other content creators, say painters, would go for this type of manipulation.
One of these days, an interviewer or audience member at one of these should ask him about the lore of Elden Ring so we can finally get some context on what exact aspects he came up with or what he thinks about it.

If you listen to a retired mechanic talk about cars, man, they've probably got some really insightful things to say, if they've been married a long time and lifelong friends they're probably have some great things to say on managing interpersonal relationships... if you talk to them about media, they'll start talking about how badass paul atriedes from dune is and how we just need a leader like him because they have no clue how to interpret a piece of media.
He does seem older in this interview than many over the previous years, still the same for most part though like you said

George is the best. Love this mercurial man.
I will always love GRRM. He’s a wonderful person.
However, I’m not watching any more of the new HBO shows.
They f his books and it’s his fault for not suing them
Imagine if they destroy Dunk and Egg. I might loose it ngl
@@mum-your yeah, I’m not even watching it
The most famous fantasy writer alive and the most famous not writer of fantasy in History
He looks good and I love to see it. Looks like he lost some weight and that can really lower the strain on your heart. As a massive Martinhead, I wish him the best cause I love him regardless of if he finishes the series or not
The Gene Wolfe shout-out from GRRM was great.
More people should check out The Book of the New Sun, it's a brilliant tetralogy. Maybe also the wider Solar Cycle if you're looking for more after that.
i read this years ago and i think i was too young to appreciate it, though even at the time i sensed i was reading something deep and literary. i'd like to revisit it
Interesting take on Sanderson's (among others) magic systems and rules. 'Hard magic' would be an oximoron, closer to 'soft science' or 'magical science'. Magic cannot be 'hard' (or systematically) because it should be unpredictable; a power we cannot tame completely, rather, just be able to barely grasp it.
It's also interesting that GRRM never mentions him directly.
but there's no "should", it's magic, it's what we want it to be and a storytelling tool, even if, with time, i got to the point of preferring grrm style of magic, i0m glad that we can have both
@@dakard1the only problem is that everything that we fully understand stops being called magic/miracles.
George RR Martin is a genius and the best in the world.
He looks healthy and a bit lighter, which only matters cause it will help him live a long healthy life. He is a gem, all the best to GRRM
Good to see him happy.
This was awesome to watch
I’ve been saying this exact thing about magic “systems.” If it has rules it’s not magic, it’s that world’s physics or chemistry. In common speech “it’s just magic” is what one says when something can’t be explained.
Big Dawg still got it 😎
A Sea Snake Prequel is the first adaptation I've been excited about since the show surpassed the books.
@@Dani_1012 it could all be spoilers but guess we will never know unless i get to meet him again
That would’ve been an interesting question. Sorry you got cut off 😭 the “hogging the mic” comment was kinda rude

Mr. Martin seems very lucid and down to earth in this interview.
Lost a bit of weight and upgraded his drip! He sounds sharp. Love too see it.
George got that Simon Strong drip.
We need to get a Simon Strong prequel 🤭😍
12:20 is where all the unsaid bubbles to the surface regarding GoT and HotD.
Did you read his not a blog posts about the show?
@@JLucas_RShe goes into greater detail here and his tone of voice makes his feelings more explicit.
This is the closest he’s ever got to saying “they fucked it up” as he’ll likely ever go.
You’re projecting.

We were so disappointed by this as well. We hope to be able to host him in the near future, when he's well again.

George looking goood... good for him!
@@EC-mg4gb so what? ASOIF is still 4000 pages of amazing writing, so he’s an amazing writer
That question was such a stupid waste of time... that person should be ashamed.
also the fact he kept saying manga and anime lol, just animation works no need to go all out weeb on a 75 year old man
He is the same guy asking about Rhaegar. The woman did say only one more question left so he can't complain.
He should have used that opportunity on his question about Rhaegar, not on confirming what's already been confirmed by George
I think GRRM would actually change one key thing - he would never have abandoned the timeskip he wrote into the narrative after ASOS in ~2000-2002. Abandoning it cost him years of work and momentum and created more narrative problems than it solved.
Sara Hess is the new Kathleen Kennedy
So my man George decided that he wants to become Heizenberg.
G.R.R.M.: "If there was one thing I would change about my books, is they would be finished."
Me: Well, you're the only one who can make that happen, Mr. George.
But I understand the challenge, as a writer currently writing what I pray will be my debut novel, just about three years now. Two and a half simce I started the manuscript. It's easy to write; it's difficult to write well. So, prayerfully it doesn't take me another decade and a half to write this book.
He looks great for his age, and lost some weight too
Goddammit I love the hat
Thought that was Aurora interviewing GRRM on the thumbnail for a sec lol
We told Professor Larrington about this comment, and she thinks it's quite funny. She says she's going to check out Aurora's music now.
Te amo george
Me gustaría que por lo menos a él lo dejaran hacer todos los cambios que quiera, si tuviera que rehacer alguno de sus libros ya publicados y eso le permitiera un mejor final a sus ojos, que por algo es el autor, lo hiciera.
I know this may be unpopular, but I’m less interested in brans magic and more interested in aryas magic with the faceless men. I feel like that would be a great spinoff
Long long time ago GRRM wanted to write a post asoiaf book about Arya in Braavos. I would love him to develop a spin off like that.
I wish they asked him 1 question pertaining to elden ring & its dlc story.
Ugh it really sucks that he misheard the question about fame. It wasn't a general question, it was whether and how it it influenced hia writings.

If you read through all the lines when George talks about adaptations, he is saying how terrible GoT was finished. And how D&D/HBO screwed it up. However, HBO did want to do more seasons but ironically D&D rushed it to write Star Wars - which then Disney replaced them because of how bad S8 of GoT was
Click on thumbnail thinking Aurora was interviewing Martin!

George looking better. Now get back to work on winds! Haha
One of these days, an interviewer or audience member at one of these should ask him about the lore of Elden Ring so we can finally get some context on what exact aspects he came up with or what he thinks about it.
GRRM wrote everything pre-shattering
