perkinsbuilder...
Join Jaime, Brett, and the Perkins Crew and follow along as they finish renovating a 100-year-old house on Main Street in Bryson City North Carolina... 120 Main Street.
We are picking up in the middle of this project, with the commercial storefront portion already finished over the last year.
On this episode, Jaime and the Guys get the custom siding for this project milled, cleaned, primed and painted. This type of "old looking" siding is not readily available at building supply stores. Jaime and Brett were looking for clear Yellow Pine siding with a smooth finish and a 4" reveal (the available siding is 6" reveal rough sawn knotty Spruce/Pine). The re-sawing part of this project takes place locally in Bryson City, at a friends wood shop (special thanks to Homer King). This shop, formerly Silver Creek Paddles, was well known for high-end wooden whitewater paddles. There is never a dull moment for a woodworking enthusiast, like Jaime, when spending the day at a shop like this!
This is a very interesting structure, with 140-year-old house that has a brick storefront that was built off of the front to the sidewalk on Main Street. Brett and Jaime decided to keep both portions of the building and make it a multi purpose property, even though it is very interesting looking.
The back part of the property will be turned into a short term rental and will be remodeled using local and re-purposed materials! Jaime and Brett have some cool tricks to make this property look awesome for a very small budget.

Love your videos. The camaraderie exhibited by all of you on the Perkins Builders crew reminds me of the camaraderie I experienced in my USAF Career. Keep up the great work and the great videos.
I hope you Pay those Boys well! The skill and experience they posses is hard to come by and priceless! $$$
I knew Ray was a painter from the beginning! I always get a hysterical laugh when Jay is around. Be kind to one another. Stay safe. Love to all
Loving this video…. Answering questions before I’ve asked them…. More please 👍🔨🍺🎉💥
I love it when Jaime uses technical jargon...."the angle of the dangle".
Love the sawmill tour.
Judging from the behavior of the crew there are more than just a couple of brothers working here! You ALL act like brothers!
🍻🍻🍻👍 Homer, has the best work "shoes"..
Thanks for sharing your childhood memory! Place looks like a paradise to hang out at growing up. My grandma used to take my sister and I to the lake and we would put our toy boats in the lake with a string and pull them around
I think I sold those paddles when I worked at a sporting goods store after high school in the early 90s. Very cool.
Y'all boys are crazy.. love the laid back banter!!
It’s like hanging out with your buddies !
Daniel Geng that’s what me and the guys at work all sound like day in day out lol. Only way to make the miserable jobs enjoyable
Brilliant Arlow.
love this project guys! and it's fun to see the world you guys grew up in toooo thanks again for the vids!
Lots of processes involved... yeah let's all go to the lake
Exactly!
Amazing finish for a bandsaw
Love seeing these kind of tips for speeding up tedious tasks like this.
It’s called clap board. Use to make it with my dad in his mill in Quebec. Our band saw was a good 15 feet tall. Blade was 4 1/2 inches wide, we would resaw beams 55 feet long up to 24x24 inches. Good memories in that mill
Arlo is a genius. We all need an Arlo in our lives.
Your hand looks really good!!!!
We always love watching all Perkins Builder Brothers video's. Why don't you paint the end of your siding boards?
Set the boards on edge side by side, paint all at once. Turn flat and paint. First edge side should be dry. Turn on other side, paint all of them. When first face side is dry, turn up last face, paint all and done
Poor Ray, quit his painting job to remain a painter. I feel your pain!
I feel your paint*
Arlo got his 10,000 steps in this day!
If you put a little screen in a gallon can, it works well with a whiz roller - or a 5 gallon pail, they make them for both sizes.
Also I’m surprised you guys don’t use a cordless Palm router and a 1/8 bit - make short work on the siding.
Probably because they realized it wouldn’t really save any time, looked like Arlo by himself was cleaning up the edges faster than Ray and Jason could paint.
That is great!. I do the same except the name. Dipstick Skip n run. That’s awesome
Love from Australia 👌
You guys should make a shirt with a silhouette of a hand plane that says “Satisfaction” under it
Nice to see you guys having fun while working. Makes the day go by better and happier to come to work the next day...unless you're going to the lake!
One question if you don't mind, why didn't you spray the boards given the amount of siding you had? Was it a space thing, a texture thing, or something else.
Entertaining video as always. Thanks guys!
What if it starts raining??
Arlo: Uhh, I guess we get wet I don’t know
🤣😂🤣
Awesome video
Nice drying rack! I’ve never seen or thought about that before
Australian schools use that all the time in art classes
That video was like watching Paint dry!!!!!
Ray is the Rachel Ray of painting! Lol
dang the board feet cost for that siding has to be astronomical at this point
Not if youtube fame is the only payment the poor crew gets :)
I love the stacking method once painted!! Can you go into detail a little bit on your design? It looks pretty easy but I could use a little more detail!! Keep up the the good work boys!!
miles harlan they have done a video about their stacking methods.
Just wanted to throw in my 8 cents. For a prosthetic I think you should get multiple attachments. Like a tape measure one, or a speed square. Maybe a multi tool kinda deal. I think that would be pretty sweet. If you were a lefty I’d say put a framing hammer on that thing. Would be awesome. Have a good one.
He'd be inspector gadet
Thats the way to do it
Going to the lake? Don’t forget to bring a towel!
Arlow is a great man!
He is the best
Can’t wait to start converting my attic
I hope you guys get a HGTV deal and make lots of money. All you guys deserve it. 👍👍
loving homers OSHA approved footware /s
Did you see his EPA certified hydraulic cylinder on the forklift?
Arlo is the Mac Daddy !
hey jamie! love the 5.5” (4” reveal). if my sawmill won’t go any smaller than a beveled 8” board, any suggestions for converting modifying those? doesn’t seem like you can just rip a couple inches off the boards, can you?
Lmaso Jamie, shut up and have few beers 🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺😁😂
You said "dunk & run", but what I heard was "Dunkin' run" and now I need an iced coffee....
Ray Jay Builder Hubbies!!
Thanks for the video… To round the corners On the boards, are you guys just using a small block plane or what kind of plane is it?
"Angle of the Dangle".... Only residential carpentry masters will recognize this phrase. It's actually an actual measurement that is extremely critical to make the aforementioned residential carpentry master not look like a complete idiot when siding a custom home.
Marcia Marcia Marcia lol.
What the heck was shooting out the fork truck cylinder?
looks like hydraulic fluid from a cracked o-ring seal
"Marsha Marsha Marsha." Isn't that super old?
Why don't you paint the ends? That's where water comes in... Or is it an in one end out of the other idea?
Q: What do you get the guy who has everything?
A: Fuel for all the stuff he has. Diesel, Gasoline, Propane, etc. Gift cards are the best way to do this.
Actually, you get him someone to fix the seals in the fork truck...
HazMatt Container I thought it looked like it was leaking something lol
Arlow is the best
proper shop foot wear at 5:14 lol
paint sprayer maybe?
Question - Why use water based primer on an exterior siding? I’ve had poor luck with the H2O primer in the past
In my experience, oil based paints have been getting worse for the last thirty years. The regulations on VOCs have led the paint companies to invest their research money in making better water based coatings. For the oils they just keep reducing the organic solvents and adding fillers.
First one here!!!
I enjoy your videos keep up the GREAT WORK!!!
Jamie I feel like you checked 10 times if the power was off on the band saw before you even put your hand close to it 🤣🤣 I don’t blame you I would have checked 20 times 😂
Second one boom
Boom! Awesome
Arlo needs to be paid by the foot for the planing, what 15 miles worth?? lol
You guys are so good,I turned off Rush Limbaugh!
I thought he died. 🤔
F3Ibane no, still the #1 radio show.
5:51
is there supposed to be lots of fluid coming out of that forklift at the top of that black hydraulic cylinder?
Considering it's age, yes.
You guys don't cut corners for sure.
I hope you reimbursed Homer the 5 gallons hydraulic oil/water for that poor main cylinder. 😳😅
i dont think ive ever had the opportunity to use the word knurl in a sentence. in fact im only commenting so that i may use the word knurl in a sentence. thanks for the opportunity
Your welcome... Do we have a definition on that?
Am I the only one triggered by them not painting or priming the bottem and top edge of each board.....? :D
Edges do look done in later shots. Still watching...yeah he rolls out edges.
Help me!, I bought a 80 year old house, needs some foundation work, and roof, five hundred square feet; just retired, spent all I had, name is Jack, live in Tennessee, Thanks for the hope
Holy ad revenue Batman!
You should gave told Ray he gad a bug on his face. He would have covered his face with paint!
Wouldn't a paint gun been faster?
May of been faster but you can't beat the mechanical action of pushing the paint into the pores with a roller/brush.
Stay away from that saw Jamie.
You should have someone do all you're work for you because you are unsafe
