I installed countertops (laminate, quartz, natural stone, glass, Corian, etc) for 5 years. We tore out old tops on probably 30% of all installs we did. When removing, we always cut out the front and back piece on cooktops and sink holes completely (like left and right of the holes, front and back). That allowed us to be able to shimmy much smaller pieces of countertop off of the cabinets and out of the house.

    • @GoinDownTheRoadFeelinBad

I presently install countertops for home depot. For bigger tops just cut at the dishwasher with a jigsaw if possible. It contains all the saw dust on top of the dishwasher. Sink or cooktop is my 2nd choice. Also you have to put your level at the 90 between the cabinets to make sure both plans are at the same level.

Also wanted to say I always watch you I'm from the Netherlands and enjoy your work! it is nice to see how much difference there is in the houses with you they are wooden houses and with us concrete houses and nowadays the masonry walls come straight from the factory and a pipe is ready within a few hours only the inside still takes a lot of time. Here in Germany you can always see if something was built pre-war or afterwards. The old buildings are beautiful and filled with details while the newer ones are concrete slabs most of the time. I don't like the modern style but I guess it's cheap. I have the feeling that the US has way more house styles. Here things like roof pitch etc. are heavily regulated and I pretty much never see things like porches, bay windows, 'towers', or even bigger garages that are made for more than one car.

You should always set up a laser when installing cabinets or checking them for that matter. The laser gives you one point of reference, using a level is harder and one cabinet to another could change just because of a racked cabinet, they are so easy to tweak and you need more than one level to get the job done, usually a big stick on your long front and back and a 24" for front to back. It is so much quicker and more accurate to use a self-leveling laser, the right tools for the right job lol.
Sorry being a pro trim carpenter and many years of remodeling work as well as new construction you learn a few things lol. What's the use of knowledge if you don't pass it on

    • @jax3032

Forgive me for I’m ignorant. Is it possible that lasers weren’t normal back in the early 90s or so? I think they mentioned the 90’s when talking about the original countertop.

@@jax3032 The laser level was invented in the 1960s by Oscar Soliz who sold the rights and has been manufactured and developed into the lasers we use today. The first self-leveling lasers were being used in 1973 by many construction companies, everything from surveying, and ground grading to leveling foundations/footings, and yes even setting cabinets/countertops.

It really does brighten up the space. I did the same thing at my place. I have very dark wood cabinet almost like a brown/red ish. And the white quartz countertop really brighten the space and made it look way better. I also changed hardware for a more modern style and it really helped and only cost like 200$ to do.
On another note, here where i live in canada, its really common to refinish/repaint the cabinets. It gives it a 2nd life. You could probably have them painted light grey or event do a contrast with a darker grey on the island and the pantry cabinet/wall oven cabinets. Its way cheaper (here like 3500$ CAD to have someone professionally refinish them way cheaper than spending 20k on new cabinets.
Anyway great video and sorry for the long comment, cheers🍻

Also to add, yes fixing the flatness on those sags will help but regardless the installers are going to have to shim. Since theyll be joining together at least 3 piece of stone and putting a full height backsplash on top of it, that means all 3 piece have to be coplanar so shimming is going to happen regardless and therefore there's inevitably going to be some visible shim placement if you bend down to look.

I’ve been slowly swapping out my halogen lights for LED lights, they’re a lot cooler. I too have a large bay window in front of the sink but it’s a pain to reach into so I have plans to replace mine when I get the time. Too bad that island countertop was busted up since it could’ve been used by someone somewhere. I’ve cut down many stone or solid surface countertops using just an abrasive masonry blade on a circular saw. I’ve even repurposed concrete sidewalk slabs using the same method, using a fan to blow the dust away and side doweled rebar for alignment…much like biscuits. I’ve never understood why anyone would pay such high prices for kitchen cabinets when they’re so easy to make. My dad was a cabinetmaker back in the 60’s & 70’s, making custom stuff for the rich in Palm Springs CA while living in Henderson NV (near Las Vegas) but I can assure you anyone can build cabinets, even me…an ironworker.

Split the laser line on the front edge of the cabinet and just hit the backside of it . They will be perfect all the way around since you had 2 seams . Edit: In case you are wondering why the knife you seem to have tried is "okay"? Welcome to customer manipulation curtesy of the PR department of Huusk.

On the subject of roofing, In Ireland we mostly use either genuine or produced slate tiles. Before that and still to this day people use manufactured roof tiles. Love the videos guys.

I’ve worked in stone for the last few years. I create a virtual layout with dimensions, and I would’ve had the sales team inform you about the squareness issue. Both perimeter island no matter the area. Over 1/8” I notify people. Looks good! And the installers did a good job. 👍

Hey, I'm pretty sure the same guy built my house as well! So many "well that's one way to do it I suppose" as I've gone through it.

My Fathers and Grandparents bought a duplex built in 1998/1999. In the main bathroom there was the same kind of vent, just a hole in the floor beneath the cabinet and a vent on the kick plate. I always thought that was a half-ass maneuver. Made those cabinets either really cold or really hot!

Always had granite. Built a new house 2 years ago and went with the same quartz you have. Still have granite in the bathrooms and laundry. Quartz hands down is so much nicer. You could have a cabinet guy come in build new drawers with Blum hardware. It would be almost like getting new cabinets.

on the bay window, just sand down the wavyness and refill any voids you reveal with filler, then put down a new layer of veneer.

On the oscillating blades I take a cut off wheel [ .045 ] on my 4 1/2 grinder and make new teeth. Works great on soft wood and dry wall. Came do it over and over .

Your kitchen looks very nice and I really like the Pro Tip that you guys used with the blue tape. I have to admit that I did the same thing with the leftover quartz pieces. I had them make me two cutting boards when our kitchen was done last year. 👍🏽

Just completed a full Kitchen remodel. Lots of work but not that bad. We went with a butcherblock countertop made things a LOT easier. We have done Corian before since my brother has a lot of experience installing it. My father was in commercial cabinets for decades so I have a lot of experience to pull from but honestly its a lot of labor but not something so far outside of the ability of DIY'ers they just need to be ready for the work.

Just did a very similar upgrade on my house with almost the same color/pattern quartz. Huge wrap around with island etc. My demo though was everything was covered with 4” ceramic tiles with concrete and mesh under it. One of most difficult demos I’ve done. The quartz guys were amazing though and the project came out amazing.

Re: Comments regarding shingles. As a European, when i learned how Americans build their walls, namely with flimsy wooden sticks instead of brick, I was actually pretty shocked. Honestly, the whole using shingles instead of tiles didn't even bother me so much anymore. It's just a logical progression. ;)
Since then I figured out why you guys do it this way. Watching your channel, it's pretty clear to me now that you guys just have so much more fun working with wood than it is laying bricks.

Looks great! The brick kinda throws me off... I'd probably paint it if that was my kitchen.... maybe German smear or just a nice deep "urbane bronze" from SW.

I regretted not getting new appliances when I resurfaced my kitchen cabinets and put new countertops. When I did get new appliances, The new ones were just different enough that it is noticeable where the old appliances were.

My wife and I love your videos but you really worked to make this one entertaining. Also, do you have Habitat For Humanity in your area? They would have loved the kitchen island counter you smashed. I know t was very heavy but I think Jamie would have found way to get it done. Keep up the good videos and we feel bad about how long you have to wait for product.

RAY the reason for the legs at the end of the island is to keep from breaking the countertop when people push down on it to get up or sit on it

I loved watching you Knuckleheads' try to unscrew the disposer mount. Anyone can do this with a little planning. The countertop people do all the real work . You guys just did the demo and leveled the cabinets. You didn't even know that the DW was fastened to the top. Rookies
