    Freni is willing to help. In Russia they do not teach bel canto. They teach by the old Soviet system that emphasises the word and not the sound. And she is one of the queens of bel canto.

      It is not placement, it is closure of the glottis, addiction of the cords, to make an audible, flying sound…she did not place her voice when she sang, with these students she was looking for a sound that was more penetrative, and she thought this meant she should put her hands up to her face as if to encourage more mask singing, that this might get the sound she desired… but that was not what she needed to encourage… she wanted the sound made my glottal singing… not collapsed, woofy singing

    I would have just about wet myself having to sing for my favorite Puccini soprano. Interesting she uses a translator as she was married to the great Nikolai Ghiarov I would've thought she knew a bit of Russian....in fact a bit later in her career Ghiarov got her to sing some Russian operas..... Tchaikovsky!

  • @hodgrix

    She was basically just trying to get them all to sing with clearer vowels as they all had the same problem of that overly woofy voice. There's such a requirement for "dark" and "big" in opera that they've lost their core, squillo! It's CHIAROscuro which means you need a balance of open and clear. This depressed larynx creates neither. The words in opera are actually meant to be understood lol

  • @manilasop1148

    There is difference between what she’s telling and how singers understand it. You need some right development to get her words. Most of girls tried to imitate Netrebko’s weird ‘potato’ sound. Eventually everyone sounded ingolato, so of course Freni tried to pull out their voices. The problem is - you can’t pull out anything if your throat is closed, larynx high and so on. You just go from potato sound to mosquito. Freni still got some old school, so she sang with super opened throat, which allowed her to play with her head/mixed resonances.
    Yeah… the language! You need to study Italian pronunciation(other languages too) like crazy. If properly pronounced, it can help a bit to fix some problems…And the support, well there should be another masterclass just for body feeling.

I cried my first lessons of singing, but later I realised, that strict behavior of my professor brought me where I am now. Singing as a professional. Opera business isn’t for weak ones. And no I’m not crazy and I like respect and kind relationship, but unfortunately not what we need to expect while working as professional opera singers. Stage directors and conductors are nasty, so better sooner to learn how to handle them.

    The problem with masterclasses like this is no path is given to make the necessary technical adjustment. Harping on the issue in a belittling manner does not help, and certainly does not make an environment for growth.
    Good teaching provides a means forwards for students. Naming the issue is something, but there’s not path forward given….

    I love Freni but I find most masterclasses kind of unbearable, especially when the teacher is trying to offer stylistic advice. You can’t be musical unless your technique is solid. If a singer isn’t relaxed when they inhale/exhale, the tone will be inconsistent and squeezed. Also, I feel like a lot of this repertoire was too difficult for where these students were at the time, technically speaking.

      Also instructing singers to make their voices more “free” or “bringing the voice more forward isn’t helpful advice at all. You have to isolate the breath and articulators to do that.

      You are exaggerating. She didn't say he needed her, she said he sometimes asked for advice, which is what everyone would do if they were singers and married to Mirella Freni for 29 years. And I'm sure it was reciprocal. The point she was making is that, besides being a teacher and a singer herself, she had a third point of view to look at these arias, which was her husband practicing and studying them over the 29 years they were together.

    This is terrible of Freni. It’s impossible to change anything technical in a few minutes. And there’s no common language; the singer is likely very confused. Ok, yes, Freni was a great artist (and I saw her onstage several times), but she’s a terrible teacher. Take a look at some of the master classes with Gwyneth Jones. She gives very detailed instructions on tongue placement, mouth position, posture, resonance. The singers are vastly improved after her instruction. She doesn’t mock the students; if they don’t understand her instructions, she explains it again.

      Gwyneth was never presented with such beginners or singers with so many vocal deficiencies. The problem here was the organisers. They presented students who could barely sing and most of them with issues that could never be rectified in being part of a 15 min(?) masterclass. Freni was obviously expecting to be presented with people who were were much more advanced in their technique. Most of what she said went over their heads - and one senses her frustration as she was realising that - One can almost here asking herself "what am I doing here??"
      The whole event was pointless!

    • @ER1CwC
      @ER1CwC ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Freni was a natural singer, and that's the problem: natural singers often don't actually know what they are doing, so they don't know how to describe it technically. Also, she was Italian, so correct tongue positions were second nature to her, whereas they are not for Russian singers (or English-language singers).

    • @Yves_Ka
      @Yves_Ka ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ER1CwC agreed during the sixties and seventies but during the 80s her voice changed a lot - she developed and put into practice a very solid technique - Ghiaurov himself told me “she is way more advanced technically than me - she knows precisely what she is doing and knows exactly how to get where she wants” If you watch videos of her that date back to mid eighties you can see her concentrating on placing the voice in the mask and jaw position when covering her top notes. The voice was not always as round as it became during the 80’s

      @@Yves_Ka I think she found a technique for herself to prolong her career. She should certainly be commended for that. But I don't think she had to ever think about basic, basic things like getting the tongue forward and out of the throat. She makes 'ingolata' sounds here to kind of demonstrate the problem. That's helpful insofar as the student can only fix the problem by first understanding that there is a problem. But she doesn't know how to describe the solution.

    I never understand why all the great singers who do these ridiculous "Masterclasses" for money act so bothered and angry that the singers in front of them are not Callas and Caruso.
    What do they think; that they would be able to change a singer's technique within 5 minutes by giving vague advise and and ironically mimicking them?
    Immense respect to the great Joan Sutherland that for very good reason refused to give Masterclasses knowing very well that here impeccable technique cannot be imparted within 5 minutes

      I don't agree. It's better to be truthful than beat about the bush. Maybe to some of these students there was a sawed seed so they can change their ways of training voice which has been wrong all the time. Thank you so much for saying this! I remember watching this masterclass many years ago and being absolutely repulsed by Freni's behavior. I have no idea why this popped up on my feed again today, but all those feelings resurfaced. Freni and "master clinicians" like her don't know how to fix an issue so what do they do? Blame the student for not having the information. It's maddening. This is not a brilliant masterclass given by master teacher. Not by a long shot. And what's worse, I think, is that the audience there and many here on this thread applaud this "teaching style" as if it is some great work and achievement she's pulling off by mocking students and telling them to get off the stage and go home. This is not a shining moment for Freni.

      I think you’re right.

      @@courtneybaritone0136 The problem here was the organisers.

      @maxdub8373se tutti sapessero queste cose (in pratica, non in teoria), tutti avrebbero una tecnica eccellente.
      La differenza è che lei fa esempi concreti, che possono essere compresi o meno perché il rapporto tra insegnante e studente è sempre ambivalente e non è detto che lei sia quella adatta a loro. Ecco, magari questa è una cosa che sanno tutti.
