And now Freni has gone, bless her, though they fortunately never quite die as we have their marvellous recordings and videos, thanks to today's technology and the kind people who make them available to us RIP
Amen to that. Thanks to recordings, I have Mirella's portrayals of Tosca, Butterfly and (of course) Mimi, along with Nicolai's characterizations of Gounod's Mephistopheles(his signature role), Raimondo and Timur.
A grand, grand talent. Thank you, Nicolia, and to your entire family lineage for being born!

Two of the greatest singers that ever lived. Legendary Ghiaurov and Freni. There is no basso or soprano after them who could come nowhere near their stratospheric level. They are both from another planet and we were so privileged to have witnessed and savoured their art. I saw them at Tonhalle Zurich about a year earlier in almost the same programme and Fedoseyev again and it was magical. They were both in better voice than in Moscow. Ghiaurov's death and Freni's retirement from the stage left an enormous void on the operatic stage as well as in our hearts.
Yes, I heard them both, quite frequently, at the Metropolitan Opera in New York back in the Sixties (and in other venues and decades as well). They were both mesmerizing Mirella Freni had the warmest, roundest, most even soprano voice I have ever heard.

Mirella Freni era bravissima compagna di Pavarotti il cui marito Magera era il collaboratore di Pavarotti ottimo pianista poi anche loro si separano e la Freni a forza di fare opere assieme al grande basso russo GHIAUROV si misero insieme io coobbi il maestro Magera suonava il piano sembrava un orchestra tanto erabravo e molto gentile perché io per conoscerlo le feci i miei complimenti e rimanemo un po' a chiaccherare fu una cosa bella è getile da parte sua .....grazie ivana
mentre vi dicevo prima di GHIAUROV un basso stava cantando ella giammai mi amò e ho letto anni fa che quel brano Verdi fu l unico autore a fare un romanza cantata da un basso tanto per cambiare Verdi e sempre Verdi

What a concert! Hopefully they’re together once more, resting in peace. As long as I live I’ll treasure the memory of hearing them in 1983 at the Met in Don Carlo. The surviving DVD is certainly a great souvenir, but it does not capture the sheer RADIANCE of her voice ringing throughout the house.
Not many sopranos could sing the Tchaikowsky aria as well as Freni does here at 67 (after 47 years of rigorous, non-stop, top-of-her-profession singing!!). Brava. HE’S actually in better form than she is, and he’s 6 years older. I think they had 25 wonderful years together.

Caro bodiloto lei sa quanto la stimi ma per onestài intellettuale una correzione ciò che ha detto, é vero si canta col cuore e la sensibilità artistica a questa età, ma se non c'é una buona tecnica vocale di supporto i cantanti lirici sarebbero sfiatati e finiti a 60 anni, e lei sa a chi mi riferisco in genere... Quindi la tecnica serve a mantenere in buono stato un apparato vocale valido ma che affronta decenni di opere in teatro, come questi due grandi. Ovvio che non faccio distinzioni di tecnica italiana, alla Garcia, o di altro genere purché sia efficace, Scusi ma questa puntualizzazione mi premeva farla perché senza tecnica anche i giovani con buon doti vocali possono aspirare al massimo a diventare cantanti da piano bar. :-)
@@bodiloto con la tecnica non si distrugge nulla, è la tecnica che da la longevità alla voce, si canta con gli interessi non si canta con il capitale. Gli urlatori privi di tecnica o con tecnica rudimentale tipo Del Monaco hanno avuto vita breve, Lauri volpi è la testimonianza del contrario, Lo Forese anche, lo stesso Pavarotti che Dio solo sa quanto ha cantato

I think Both Ghiaurov and Freni show exceptionally youthful voices for being as old as they both were when this concert was given.. Must come from proper technique.
Not every classical singer can do it, like they did... Bravo !.... N.G. died in two years of that...

Nicolai Ghiaurov is, to me, the Enrico Caruso of basses.
What a wonderful comparison! I more than agree with you. Ghiaurov was just incomparable in any role he sang: light years ahead of any other bass, specially in terms of depth of interpretation. He had the whole package, with every aspect of his art developed to the maximum level possible. His interperations are as deffinitive as Caruso's are for the tenor repertoire.
Enriched operatic big time, how glorious this golden couple's voices, artistry. Full of grace... Bravo!

Great concert! Mirella Freni's voice beautiful as ever, with it's glorious expressiveness and agility. Ghiaurov - a true lion in winter. He's my favourite bass of all time, it's a pleasure to hear him in several of his most signature roles. And what a surprise to hear a wonderful bass Nikolai Didenko as Sancho in Don Quichotte! Thank you for posting this gem!

Это называется хорошая вокальная школа и грамотный подход в работе с музыкальным текстом и тогда голос звучит и в преклонном возрасте.
Марк Осипович Рейзен спел арию Гремина в 90 лет.
Нельзя забывать, что генетика, физическое и психическое здоровье, залог долгой певческой карьеры.

At 73 Ghiaurov is in amazing fine shape. IMO, I never found him particularly interesting as an interpreter but he certainly took care of his instrument which was a deluxe one. He only passed away two years after this performance & I wonder if this was one of his last.

Un Ghiaurov non più in forma vale pur sempre la pena di vederlo/ascoltarlo per imparare tanto, uno di quei grandi intramontabili…la Freni una sempreverde!
Maravillosos, los cantante de hoy en día duran pocos años, con suerte 10, y depués caen en picada. Estos 2 maestros de la música y de la vida ya son grandes, tienen la voz hermosa, entera y son un ejemplo del canto. Yo a Freni le vi en el Colón haciendo Fedora 1998 y La Boheme 1999 y fue algo increíblemente bello!!! Salud Mirella, Nicolai QEPD

due grandi artisti, voci eccezionali e grande tecnica : eccezionale prestazione canora anche considerando l'età , lui aveva 73 anni e lei 66 e le sfumature della voce non ne risentono anche grazie alla grande serietà professionale di entrambi.
Una vez fui a un concierto de Victoria de los Angeles, estaba ya mayor. Fue una lecciòn de arte la que diò ese dìa. En el pùblico habìa un chico al que conocìa; estudiaba canto conmigo. Le pregunté si le habìa gustado y su respuesta fue: He visto sòlo una vieja intentando cantar. Las voces con la edad seguramente envejecen como el resto de nuestro cuerpo pero el arte no tiene edad, aquì vemos un claro ejemplo. He disfrutado mucho viendo este concierto como disfrutè en el concierto de Victoria de los Angeles. Ahora este chico està haciendo una discreta carrera porqué aùn es joven pero, a mi modesto parecer, tiene poco talento. No sè si a los setentay...se le podrà seguir oyendo, no sé què le quedarà...

¡Esto es lo que provoca una verdadera técnica!
Longevidad vocal, las voces de ambos quizá no suenan frescas pero tienen una gran potencia y belleza poco usual (al menos después de tantas décadas sobre los escenarios), magníficos ambos, una lamentable pérdida el fallecimiento del Sr. Ghiaurov, pero aún tenemos la gran escuela vocal de la Freni, ambos orgullo del género Operístico alrededor del mundo.

Evidently past their prime, both of them, but that's to be expected. The program is well-chosen to spare what's left of the voices and there are some touching moments.
