    Never has a game had such a hold over me.
    Circa 2008, I used to feel a little (a little) guilty for mostly only going over to my best friend's house to play Oblivion. Being not raised to be rude, I couldn't just demand it. I had to just wait and hope. Sleepovers were 👌. They would be asleep, I'd be affixed to the TV all night. I even made myself get good grades so my parents would allow me to buy an Xbox 360 to get the game.
    Never has a game had such a hold over me. In Oblivion, it was the first time I got to actually travel to those distant mountains that are usually just painted as background to a game. It's such a uniquely wonderful thing, walking out of that Sewer and just heading towards the highest peak I could find.

    I respect the "Let me figure things out" but vampirism is the one thing I'd agree with on warning about in the moment. It's not a rock you're holding, that's a grenade with no pin.

    It's always fun to see new comers to Oblivion.
    I don't remember visiting that first cave at all. (Sideways Cave) It is a lot less monotonous than most caves.
    I'm not sure how much help you don't want, but if you turned your cursor back on, you can see if an object is going to be stolen if the cursor is red.
    From what I remember, vampirism is a big pain to cure after it progresses.
    It's okay not to do the main quest at first, but it has a strong story and offers different experiences.

    Really great to see someone new coming to Oblivion for the first time. I don't thik I would have the patience to get it setup in a way that I would enjoy playing it in 2024 (modding it is a *nightmare* compared to Skyrim), but I sank at least 200 hours per playthrough (can't remember if it was 2 or 3 playthroughs). Such good memories and good feelings, even from the soundtrack. Also, despite the 'oh no, it's the end of the world because the emperor is dead!' setting, it feels so much more of an optimistic, bright and hopeful setting compared to Skyrim (still absolutely love Skyrim and its more bleak atmosphere, of course!). So many of the gameplay mechanics of Oblivion frustrated me to no end and I'm glad Skyrim got rid of (having your strength attribute drained by a spell, curse or sickness is *just the worst* ), but Oblivion has just such a charm to it. Excited to see you make your way through the game. Also interested to see how you go with Morrowind. That will be a *much less acccessible* game to get into, but given how you've worked your way around the first 6 hours of Oblivion, I think you're going to be impressed with the depth of the story (but also, SO SO SO much more reading since dialogue is not fully voiced). Morrowind does not hold your hand at all (and I had to give up and google solutions --- back in 2002 Google, mind! --- because I didn't know what a "cairn" was, and knowing that was absolutely crucial to understanding a direction I'd been given) which I think you're going to appreciate. Also, if memory serves, the journal is arse and doesn't sort by quest (unless there was a later patch that I've forgotten about that does it). It trades in the cinematic, polished and streamlined approaches of the later games but is extremely deep, and I think you're going to love it. Still and all, I'm going to enjoy following along this playthrough, and I might even go back and check out your Skyrim playthrough, too. The games don't really have a coherent storyline between games (I mean, the history absolutely progresses from each, but from a narrative perspective it's not necessary), and I'm interested to see how you experience/understand the lore of each game progressing backwards. Should be fun! Thank you.

    this is my favourite game of all time. i wish you could have experienced it back in the day because at the time the graphics were insanely good. the story role playing aspects are the highlight of the game. i recommend saving the main quest for last.
    edit: you dont need a lore book because everything is pretty well taken care of but there are a few mysteries in the game that you can solve in a detective type role and having one might just make them a bit easier or more fiun for you.

      Skyrim firmly held that position for me since it released , but I hadn’t checked oblivion out until this year. Was insane seeing all the things that blew my mind in 2012 with Skyrim was previously accomplished in oblivion 6 years prior. I really appreciated my time with it

    • @remrem-gx3ml
      @remrem-gx3ml 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      they are both great games but i think it really boils down to what you like in an rpg. id say Skyrim has a bunch of quality-of-life improvements, better graphics, and combat but oblivion to me at least has a better story. the world is a little smaller but i prefer that Skyrim had too much walking for me. the character customization in regards to stats is also significantly more in-depth. not to mention how much more fleshed-out magick is in oblivion. i love Skyrim but the first time i turned it on i was disappointed because all my favorite features were removed.@@DrunkNugget

    • @davidvaughan5512
      @davidvaughan5512 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@remrem-gx3ml Obvlivion and Skyrim are so, so different. Morrowind even moreso, especially when you look at the sheer depth of Morrowind's world (and the fact there's no quest markers holding your hand, and it's possible to complete the main quest EVEN IF YOU REFUSE TO FOLLOW THE WAY YOU'RE TOLD just by working things out yourself from in-game understanding). Oblivion, however, is a much *easier* game to play, and Skyrim even moreso again. But you're right that with every incarnation, they chip away at the depth in order to make it a more mainstream experience. And when I was younger, that used to annoy me, but now I'm old, time-poor and impatient, so I appreciate the hand-holding and relative simplicity. I definitely feel like each iteration of the series comes with massive quality of life improvements and are much more polished experiences (and we know how buggy Oblivion can be, but the number of times I *feel through the ground* to my death in Morrowind was stupidly high).

    Oblivion was my first TES game and it will always hold a special place in my heart. Skyrim was too dreary and grey for my liking. Elder Scrolls Online was my jam from 2014 until about 2018. I tried Morrowind once, but it was too janky for my more refined palette.

    Lore notebooks are from D&D days. Every player/DM was required to have a notebook to put in thoughts, actions, lore. I still have a notebook. I used one for Final Fantasy XI. Mostly because the quest logs sucked. I used to read some of them with my son and he got to see how weird his dad was. Side note, 554 hours in Skyrim for me, just on Steam. No idea before Steam. I played a lot though. 😁😁 Currently playing Fallout 4 again. Thinking about Fallout 76. I didn't like 76 when it first came out. But the updates have interested me. Watching you play...I'm getting the Oblivion craving again.

    Tip! Join the mages and fighters guilds. So many options become available and better ways to make money! I won't say any more than that because you need to discover the perks on your own! Just Subscribed. Also, weapons and armor need to stay in good repair or they become weaker.

    Be sure to keep track of your gear. You need to repair your weapons and armor. If you don’t, they eventually become useless, until you repair them.
    There’s no shame setting the difficulty back to about half. Oblivion’s difficulty is kinda borked, and above halfway is punishing.

I understand water levels maybe a bit of a hassle for extremely new players, not many people havent played oblivion but those that do almost always have trouble with water levels.
