People mostly underestimate badminton. This sport actually really physically demanding. Profesional badminton is exciting to watch. My favorite is men's double.
In high school, I signed up for badminton after tennis season was over. It was kinda terrifying when you're first learning lol. They talk about how fast the smash goes, but they didn't bring up the fact that you're suppose to return it. None of that running away or flinching from it.
I got 7 minutes into the video and realized her voice sounded so familiar. Looked her up and she was my TA in college for developmental psych! Crazy seeing her in this video!! Didn't even know she was an Olympian! Hi Rena!
It's actually a really great technique. I've matched against different kinds of players from defensive ones that can return any shuttle to intense offensive ones that will smash you with one little mistake but it's still the chill playmaker ones that controls the pacing of the game that I find most annoying (cuz theyre really hard to deal with)
Yup, that's what I do when I play with new players. Just work on your precision, rather than using power shots, which results in your opponent running around a lot more. Just placing it on the edge of where they can reach to force them to move, while not being impossible for them.

ikrrr, never heard of her before, and was genuinely surprised to see someone from the us to compete in badminton, while she may not rank high for most dominant countries in badminton, her achievement was amazing for a us badminton player
We Indonesian are really REALLY proud with our badminton, to the point that we have a foundation focusing on badminton. They offer scholarships for badminton athletes and the selections are not easy. Kids and people who got the scholarships bring honour as big as going to the military.
gah i know!! badminton is so often associated with east asian countries that it's literally become a stereotype. people never seem to believe me when i say that europe hosts the biggest badminton tournaments and that Indonesia absolutely dominates (especially in doubles). its always frustrating when people assume the sport is the "easier version of tennis" especially since they're quite different in play style.
I'm an American who lives in China where I discovered badminton and became OBSESSED with it in my 40's. I now play competitively and I am so happy I found the sport. I hope more Americans can discover the sport and play it more!

I actually think I’m going to start playing because of this video! We used to play it in physical education classes in school and I always enjoyed it. I have chronic pain and other health issues, and I think this is something that I may actually be able to handle. It’s nice that it’s something that can be toned down for someone like me, but then also can be done on an Olympian level!

in Malaysia, badminton is like the number 1 go to sport every student chooses to participate in school. everyone wants to join the badminton club and it always gets full every year. everybody just loves badminton in Malaysia
Oh gosh truth there were like 10x more applicants for badminton sports club compared to other sports club. Though football (soccer) is quite popular too. I wonder if it was originally so popular in Malaysia due to anak-anak Sidek 🤔

Im Indonesian, and people crazy over badminton here, i was playing futsal (indoor soccer) in high school but always knew that badminton is as exhausting as futsal but when i saw our school badminton club training session, i was suprise to see their schedule, its all just run and run

Fun fact: The Indonesians 🇮🇩 who dominated the Barcelona 1992 Olympics are husband and wife! They now owned a badminton training center here in Jakarta! Ps: as someone who grew up playing badminton in the backyard, the shots where they show shuttlecocks misplaced everywhere was hilarious because mine usually landed at the roof, trees, or neighbor's roofs! 🤣🤣
Same here, I can't even count how many shuttlecocks I put on my neighbor's roof or stuck in the trees, I even got the racket stuck in a tree once XD I don't know if it's common liking badminton in Indonesia even though I'm Indonesian myself :V

I am a Latina who played varsity badminton in high school and casually in college and I can say that this makes me so so so happy to see. Badminton for sure is underrated, I always get so excited when I see badminton highlighted like this lol. Congrats to all the Olympians who have worked hard to get to where they are now.
"People can lose their eyes...." Yeeeah. My wife got hit in the eye playing badminton in her teens, and it damaged her intraocular muscles. Now she gets double vision in one eye randomly. More frequently when she's tired or has been staring at a monitor for too long. And she's just lucky that's ALL that happened to her eye.
played badminton as a kid (grew up in one of the countries that REALLY enjoys badminton as a sport) and had a VERY nasty nosebleed when one of the kids in my neighborhood accidentally hit my face during a serve
@@TechnologyFML I think that is a very rare chase and need to involve a very high speed ball. Accident can happen other ways like getting hit from the racket or ankle sprain the most common one.
@@TechnologyFML as a badminton player myself for about 6 years, I can say that it almost never happened to any professional matches, even if it does it usually hits their arms or legs because the players can somewhat predict the ball and their reflexes to dodge or defense are much better. but still, new players should definitely be aware of smashes
This was probably my most favorite out of this series so far and it totally is because of Rena Wang and her cheerful instruction combined with the absolute decimation of her opponents

You probably say that youre talented because youre going against people who have no idea how the sport works, if you think badminton or any other sport is easy then you have no idea how the game works other than just hitting the ball back. Its like saying football is easy just because you know how to kick the ball. Dont say something is easy unless youve really accomplished something great in it.

In the months of November to January, you can find people playing badminton in almost every alley there exists in India.....it is a really popular sport here.
India truly making a big progress. In the past time, badminton was dominated only by some countries like Indonesia, China, and Denmark. Today India has some top badminton athletes like Saina Nehwal, Praneeth, Sindhu, and many more. I think if Indian put more focus on this sport it will great.
hehe as a malaysian i'm so happy every time i see datuk lee chong wei appear. he's truly a living legend in this country, i still remember when writing about him in our primary school essays was common practice. he along with datuk nicol ann david revived the spirit of sport in the current generation, and continue to do so even in their retirement. this is really quite unrelated to the video, but i just wanted to appreciate him as i was reminded of his contribution to malaysia. sincerely, thank you datuk!
The crazy thing about badminton is players can actually return a 200+ mph smash. It doesn't bounce like tennis, so you have something like .3 of a second to react. I went to watch the US open at CSUF with a friend for the first time a few years back. It's a completely different sport 😳😳 I couldn't keep up with what was going on at all lmao
I play tennis and badminton. I love both, but badminton is how I'd start teaching a young kid handeye coordination. The game is more forgiving, its learning curve is a lot less steeper, and the speed at which new players can go from drills to actual matches is way shorter. Yet, the biomechanical lessons that badminton will teach your body will stay for life. Being light on your feet, spatial awareness, awareness of another person sharing a considerably smaller court (relative to tennis), how to shift from being heavy handed to being delicate, how to pace yourself, energy conservation. I can go on. Point is don't underestimate it because the it looks like they are hitting a ball with feathers.
Badminton is way tougher to master. Even advanced level players can't hit baseline to baseline backhand clear. Also, jump smash is so difficult to master
I've been playing since I was 10 (so nearly 9 years now) and I've always loved this sport so much and I'm glad it's getting the recognition it deserves. 🥰🥰
I’m not much a sports person but when I first played/found badminton in high school p.e. it quickly became the only sport/activity I actually wanted to participate in and was excited to play. I wish I could play it again. Gotta go get myself at least two rackets and a shuttlecock so I can maybe play with my sister.
I played Badminton in high school, and remember my team was playing the final game in our competition tier, and we had to win that game to win our tier. The game went for so long! Our team hit 21 first, but the other team was on 20, so we'd keep tying, or moving up by only one point, until finally our team won 29 - 27. It was one of the most intense games I've ever played, and it's a fond memory.

as Indonesian, most sports that we played since young are badminton and football, fun fact since barcelona 1992 until tokyo 2020 Indonesia always won gold medal in badminton and only failed once.
Little correction on the fields used, in singles it‘s the inner boundaries to the side but still the entire length of the court (to the second line). The inner back line is only relevant for the service in doubles.
Super intense underrated sport. Physically demanding and exhausting cause of the lunges and crouches you have to do to get to the shuttle at such a fast pace. Playing with opponents who hit the shuttlecock at lightning speed and deflecting it is no joke either.
Love this series! Haven't watched the whole series yet, so I don't know if this is covered later, but I would love to see some paralympic athletes and sports!

It's a shame to see how they didn't show the true speed of badminton and demonstrate how it is intense and is the fastest racquet sport in the world. This sport is already misrepresented in many countries and this was their opportunity to get people playing this amazing game.
I used to play Badminton, it made me shed like 100lbs and I was enjoying it. Then Highschool came and I just stopped. Now I am heavier than before. I think I need to go back to playing it.
I'm excited for this episode. I officiated at the badminton at London 2012 (couldn't see myself in these clips though!) and its amazing to see up close
That's just really how it is in badminton. It's harder for a newbie to score in badminton against someone who plays than in most sports. It's cause of that strategy + control part which requires actual experience to do.
To be fair then I probably could do that too. Beginners vs a practiced player is a huge leap and it's almost impossible to win a point as a beginner. The other player has to make a stupid mistake, which she would never do at her level without getting just a bit of a challenge. I would potentially make one or two mistakes like that if I played them and I'm just an average non-competitive player but I doubt I would ever lose to them at their current level even with the 16 - 0 headstart and I would gladly prove it if possible. Badminton is awesome and I will surely have fun and hopefully they will too.
@@pawlundgreen3148 exactly, I play in national competition. I could do exactly same thing. The gap between someone who has footwork and technique and someone who doesn’t have it is massive. You are basically at the person’s mercy.
the gap between a newbie and pro is so big. My friend who played at national level once played with Tien Minh Nguyen (top 1 in Vietnam). Tien Minh let him off with 20-0 and he still won the match without having my friend get a point, and again my friend played national. it’s crazyyyy

I have played badminton competitively for years, but I always say that it would be more likely for me to score a single point in a game of Tennis against Roger Federer than it is for me to score a point against Kento Momota in badminton, even though I do not play tennis at all. Badminton is such a controlled sport that you can literally win every single point against a much weaker player.

India truly making a big progress. In the past time, badminton was dominated only by some countries like Indonesia, China, and Denmark. Today India has some top badminton athletes like Saina Nehwal, Praneeth, Sindhu, and many more. I think if Indian put more focus on this sport it will great.

hehe as a malaysian i'm so happy every time i see datuk lee chong wei appear. he's truly a living legend in this country, i still remember when writing about him in our primary school essays was common practice. he along with datuk nicol ann david revived the spirit of sport in the current generation, and continue to do so even in their retirement. this is really quite unrelated to the video, but i just wanted to appreciate him as i was reminded of his contribution to malaysia. sincerely, thank you datuk!

The crazy thing about badminton is players can actually return a 200+ mph smash. It doesn't bounce like tennis, so you have something like .3 of a second to react. I went to watch the US open at CSUF with a friend for the first time a few years back. It's a completely different sport 😳😳 I couldn't keep up with what was going on at all lmao
I play tennis and badminton. I love both, but badminton is how I'd start teaching a young kid handeye coordination. The game is more forgiving, its learning curve is a lot less steeper, and the speed at which new players can go from drills to actual matches is way shorter. Yet, the biomechanical lessons that badminton will teach your body will stay for life. Being light on your feet, spatial awareness, awareness of another person sharing a considerably smaller court (relative to tennis), how to shift from being heavy handed to being delicate, how to pace yourself, energy conservation. I can go on. Point is don't underestimate it because the it looks like they are hitting a ball with feathers.
Badminton is way tougher to master. Even advanced level players can't hit baseline to baseline backhand clear.
Also, jump smash is so difficult to master

I’m not much a sports person but when I first played/found badminton in high school p.e. it quickly became the only sport/activity I actually wanted to participate in and was excited to play. I wish I could play it again. Gotta go get myself at least two rackets and a shuttlecock so I can maybe play with my sister.
It's crazy popular here in Indonesia. It's easy to learn and play, but have a crazy learning curve to be an expert like any other sport
I played Badminton in high school, and remember my team was playing the final game in our competition tier, and we had to win that game to win our tier. The game went for so long! Our team hit 21 first, but the other team was on 20, so we'd keep tying, or moving up by only one point, until finally our team won 29 - 27. It was one of the most intense games I've ever played, and it's a fond memory.

as Indonesian, most sports that we played since young are badminton and football, fun fact since barcelona 1992 until tokyo 2020 Indonesia always won gold medal in badminton and only failed once.
I'd say deceptions in badminton are often overlooked too. When done well they look like sleight of hand magic!
Little correction on the fields used, in singles it‘s the inner boundaries to the side but still the entire length of the court (to the second line). The inner back line is only relevant for the service in doubles.

Ned actually did quite well, I was pretty impressed with him.
Super intense underrated sport. Physically demanding and exhausting cause of the lunges and crouches you have to do to get to the shuttle at such a fast pace. Playing with opponents who hit the shuttlecock at lightning speed and deflecting it is no joke either.

It's a shame to see how they didn't show the true speed of badminton and demonstrate how it is intense and is the fastest racquet sport in the world. This sport is already misrepresented in many countries and this was their opportunity to get people playing this amazing game.
Yeah..., It would've been better if they'd showed some long doubles rallies.
What this video didn't do justice is, smashes are usually REALLY LOUD, if you're watching directly. Its like a really, really loud whipping sound

I used to play Badminton, it made me shed like 100lbs and I was enjoying it. Then Highschool came and I just stopped. Now I am heavier than before. I think I need to go back to playing it.

That's just really how it is in badminton. It's harder for a newbie to score in badminton against someone who plays than in most sports. It's cause of that strategy + control part which requires actual experience to do.
To be fair then I probably could do that too. Beginners vs a practiced player is a huge leap and it's almost impossible to win a point as a beginner. The other player has to make a stupid mistake, which she would never do at her level without getting just a bit of a challenge.
I would potentially make one or two mistakes like that if I played them and I'm just an average non-competitive player but I doubt I would ever lose to them at their current level even with the 16 - 0 headstart and I would gladly prove it if possible.
Badminton is awesome and I will surely have fun and hopefully they will too.
@@pawlundgreen3148 exactly, I play in national competition. I could do exactly same thing. The gap between someone who has footwork and technique and someone who doesn’t have it is massive. You are basically at the person’s mercy.
the gap between a newbie and pro is so big. My friend who played at national level once played with Tien Minh Nguyen (top 1 in Vietnam). Tien Minh let him off with 20-0 and he still won the match without having my friend get a point, and again my friend played national. it’s crazyyyy

I have played badminton competitively for years, but I always say that it would be more likely for me to score a single point in a game of Tennis against Roger Federer than it is for me to score a point against Kento Momota in badminton, even though I do not play tennis at all.
Badminton is such a controlled sport that you can literally win every single point against a much weaker player.
