India's Saina Nehwal wins the bronze medal in the women's badminton singles event at the London 2012 Olympic Games (4 August).
The match was called to an end after China's Wang Xin was forced to retire with injury.
Badminton made its debut as a demonstration sport at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich. It was not until the 1992 Games in Barcelona that it was officially included on the Olympic programme, with men's and women's singles and doubles events. The mixed doubles event made its debut in 1996 at the Atlanta Olympic Games. Since then, the number of events has remained unchanged.

Few people know this but saina was suffering from high fever during this match. She took some pills and came out to fight for her chances. That's why she wasn't moving fast as she used to.

Is it really the right thing to do by cheering on the fact that Wang Xin was suffering from back pain? Though Saina deserves the medal, we should be inspired from Wang Xin's positive attitude and player spirit. The cheering at the back by India did give her put downs, but she didn't give up, because it was for her country. Knowing that Saina is the top women badminton player, Wang Xin didn't give up. I like how both players were aggressive in playing, but aren't personal enemies.
