- When you think of footballing legends, few stories captivate like that of the Lisbon Lions. A team born and bred in Glasgow, led by the visionary Jock Stein, who conquered Europe in 1967 and transformed the landscape of World football. But how good were prime Celtic really? Let’s find out!

Met John Clark in Morrisons in Hamilton about a year ago, what a man. Said hello and ended up talking for about 30 minutes, regaling me with stories.
His medals are on display at the stadium. Legend
By no means an exaggeration when I say Celtic at that time were probably the best football team in the world.
Bet you complain about England reliving the glory days of 1966, too 😂😂😂
Absolutely fucking gutted they haven't ever come near winning the biggest prize in club football. And on top of everything else, their club was liquidated trying to win it. All they can do now is watch while Celtic hoover up treble after treble after treble .. Jealousy is a horrible thing! 😁😁
@@WeAreThePeople1690 Well were not talking about England.
@@talkinghead3169 The 'we are the peasants' that stood idly by and watched their old club die. That Glorious Celtic Quadruple in 1967 totally destroyed them 😂🎉😂
Fanny @@WeAreThePeople1690
The only regret during that period was that Celtic had the chance to win 2-3 European cups and create a proper legacy similar to that of Ajax. The team were good enough.
100%.The 70 cup final team were arguably better than the lions
@@Paul-po5om69 team best ..very very unlucky to lose to AC Milan who easily went on to win it
But they didn't meaning they weren't good enough.
@GlasgowCelticforever1888 Don't make me Laugh Danny Bhoy. Just cos you lot dinae wash so end up smelling of pish doesn't gie ye the right tae talk it. Away outside
There's a Puddle that needs drinking.
class just pure class
the semi finals against leeds was so amazing i think they were complacent in the 2nd final but yeah the Bhoys from Glasgow in the east end did us more than proud
So proud of them and my club
What about the coaches that were destroying the life's of little boys?
You love them too?
By winning the European cup with all the players coming from Glasgow and surrounding area, Glasgow Celtic done something that will NEVER be repeated. A fully unique football team.
Pretty much every team in Europe who won that trophy up until the 3 foreigners' rule was taken away done the same thing. Ajax, Red Star, Milan, Etc. All won with players from within their own countries. 😉
By your own standards, I take it this means you are obsessed?? 😉
@WeAreThePeople1690 Jealousy eats away at you. You haven't got over the Death of your Club in 2012, have you?
@@WeAreThePeople1690 Not sure if you mean the AC Milan team of '63 with the 3 Brazilians or the '65 Inter team with the two Spaniards and just the one Brazilian? (The Inter team that won the year previously had a German in there too!). You would be correct about the 1966 winning Real Madrid team though (apart from the Uruguayan dude). Then after the Lions, Man Utd won it in '68 with a squad containing 8 Scots, 5 Irishmen and an Italian. The 1969 AC Milan team however was completely Italian, well, apart from the Swede, the German and another one of those Brazilian chaps. Surely the Feyenoord squad of 1970 will back you up? Nope. A German, an Austrian and a Belgian in there. Ok, we're finally at the Ajax team of 1971. 100% Dutch... except the Serbian, the German and an Israeli! And surely, the famous Bayern team had all Germans? They did!!! Well, if you don't count the 3 Danes, the Swede and the Serbian. After that, it just seems to get worse... English teams packed with Scots, Boniek's Juve, four Brazilians in the Porto squad of 1987. The Red Star team was all Romanian, but then it was an army team living behind the iron curtain during the cold war. So there's that.
@WeAreThePeople1690 so why didn't rangers win the European cup before the 3 foreigners rule
Prime celtic still beat in 71’ 4-1 for the league cup 🇧🇪 the lisbon lions were special and its an incredible achievement for the scottish game 🍀🏴
Surely the greatest result in Patrick's history? And well deserved!
As a celt through and through and never wanting them to lose I got to say Partick thistle were incredible that day and especially given just how strong they were then you should be very proud of thistles performance that day and being a local I'm happy (if that's the correct word) that if any club did it , I'm glad it was the mighty Maryhill magyrs. Respect bud
@@ConnorKD1876 was at that game thistle played really well celtic had an off day but we the fans still stayed for the whole game not like sevco who are fair weather supporters
Great achievement from a great team and a great club 🍀
Yes we won every competition we entered but Dundee United who finished 6th in the League actually beat us 3-2 both home and away proving perhaps that sometimes no matter how good you are or what system you play there will always be teams who you struggle to overcome.
Yes two 3-2 defeats in an otherwise unbeaten season suggests dundee united unlike any other team worked out how to play celtic.
Celtic's 0-0 draw v dukla in the semi stein would never talk about as celtic uncharacteristically played defensively to counter masopust and dukla's counterattacking style.
The dundee united defeats were actually beneficial in a sense.
@@brownwarrior6867 they were celtics bogey team at that time
One of the greatest club sides to ever do it. Changed the way the game was played forever!
Changed the way little boys were coached forever you mean?
What was the names of the predators who had free reign at Ibrox again? I've forgotten, cause there seem two be people like that in every walk of life
What changed?
@@FalseTeeth-o4y Put an end to cattenaccio, which was destroying the game
This team are immortal. The catenaccio was killing football, and it had to be defeated.
The best celtic team I ever saw and they entertained they could and did beat anyone
winning the european cup with all local players is the greatest achievement in the sport imo ☘☘🍀🍀

67 was before my time but it makes me so proud to think that Glasgow Celtic, my team, the team I support, were the first British club to win the biggest prize in club football. I think for a very short period between 1967 and 68 they probably were the best team in the world, and should have won the world club championship.
@@MultiJoe84 Son , you don't know what you missed , From , The GLASGOW CELTIC man , Johannesburg , South Africa .
pmsl @ should have. They didn't because they weren't good enough.
@@FalseTeeth-o4y They lost the World Club Championship because they were not allowed to play , up against fkn savages , a shit scared ref and locals pissing on their training gear , soldiers pointing rifles at them , Racing Club should have been banned for life , but bribes took care of that . THE CELTIC WERE GOOD ENOUGH , MAYBE YOU SHOULD GET NEW GLASSES TO GO WITH YOUR FALSE TEETH AND READ THE TRUTH 🍀🍀🍀
@@FalseTeeth-o4y They didn’t because they were kicked off the park. Sir Robert Kelly was minded to withdraw after the mayhem of the second game, but was prevailed upon by the players to allow them to go on, with horrendous results, followed by a load of pious handwringing by the English press - Celtic actually had the BBC team of the year withdrawn because of it; funnily enough when the same treatment was meted out to Man Utd the following season by Estudianter it was suddenly a big scandal.
@@DonaldjohnMacInnes Always an excuse from celtic fans.
Incredible achievement given the short radius from the stadium the players came from .
Some of the attendances Celtic played in front of: Aberdeen in the cup final 1970 - 145,000. V Leeds in the Euro cup semi-final - 136,000. Numerous times Celtic played to crowds well over 100k. They are without doubt the biggest football support on the planet, and from a small country too!
108k at the cup final in 1970. The 1937 final v the sheep was attended by 147k. The highest attendance for a club match in Europe .
The Bhoys won it even before the left the tunnel. Berti Auld started THECELTIC SONG in the tunnel and the bhoys a ALL joined in. Then as the emerged u u can see Jimmy JINKY Jonston, s tell Inters full " Ur in for a nightmare". As Jinky points at him and also tells him him "I'm turning u inside out". GREATEST achievement in football bar none. One player from Aryshire, the rest are all from Glasgow. Unreal, Will never be matched. C.
I have always thought Jinky was telling his opponent, we will swap tops at the end? I prefer your take on it! 💚💚
Brilliant : FACCHETTi the Internazionale full back , the left back , was rated one of the best ever left backs in the world .. BURGNiCH the Internazionale right back was rated one of the best right backs of all time in the world .. Armando PiCCHi is rated one of the top sweepers in the world ever .. HOWEVER , in the same sort of charts appears SiMPSON and SARTi .. Mc NEiLL , GEMMELL , MURDOCH (?) , 'jj' jiMMy 'jiNKy' JOHNSTONE but not , to my amazement , Bobby LENNOX . It was said that Internazionale were missing Luis SUAREZ via injury BUT CELTiC were without joe McBRiDE ( Gerd Muller ) ..
Connor735 , I was in the Huns end that day , next to the Partick supporters , they deserved to win and they sang like champs , and NOT ONE BIT OF TROUBLE . HAIL HAIL.
Although the Dutch get the credit for total football, the Lisbon Lions created it in 66/67 season, scoring a total of 196 goals in all competitions a world record still to this day 💪🏻🍀 maybe naivety & bad luck stopped celtic from winning multiple European cups.
@@tonym505 Stein was unlucky post Lisbon in that two rebuilds came apart, due to loss of players for various reasons; look at a youngGeorge Connelly for example, and you’ll see the prototype ball playing centre back, who could defend, and also begin the attack.
1967-74 Celtic were the best team in the UK and one of the top half dozen in Europe
The Quality Street Gang who followed immediately after the Lisbon Lions were also immensely talented with players like Dalglish, Connelly, McGrain, Hay & Macari in their ranks.
You failed to mention they had over 40 attempts at goal in the final.thats a shot at goal every 2 mins..big JOCK STEIN greatest manager ever ,he TAUGHT CRYUFF, FERGIE etc.and they used his tactics and passed them on to PEP and the rest .
He's a pdf file protector
Inverted wing backs in the 60’s. Pep’s origin story starts here.
Celtic totally dismantled Helenio Herrera's cattenachio defensive system that day. The fact that it was only 2-1 at the end flattered Inter. Sadly in the forthcoming years, the youngsters from the reserves (McGrain, Dalglish, Macari, Hay, Connelly etc) never repeated that, but they did get close in 1970 (final v Feyenoord.. 72 lost to Inter on penalties in the semi, and in 74 a brutal semi v Atletico Madrid). Proud to say I saw & lived through it all, and it set the standards of fast attacking football for the rest to follow.
He may not have been one of the Lisbon but Danny McGrain is without doubt an absolute legend of our great club and in my opinion was one of the best right backs in the uk ,the term legends so.etimes get banded about too easily but the Lisbon lions deserve it
This Celtic side were the very Best side we have had and what a time to be a young guy growing up them yrs
And every player practically a Scot and should have won 2nd European cup in 1970 but for tight fisted board them who denied them a bonus ..Two Celtic players Tommy Gemmill and Bertie Auld just 2 days before flying out to take on Feyenoord in European cup final in 1970 in San Siro in Milan ..Both went up to board asked whats for bonus if we bring back European cup the biggest trophy in European football and were told NO BONUS ..This went bck to rest players and had put some of them off big time as they were not on big wages at all ..No Bonus beat Celtic .
How i also know when speaking with Bobby Lennox in 1990 not good times for the club ..Outside Cetic park i seen all th crowd gathered ..Stood beside me was Paul McStay with his leg in plaster , Charlie Nicholas stood on steps along just over from Charlie was Stevie Chalmers ..I seen young girls have pics taken with Gerry Crainey beside his nice car ..i seen walking out down steps one of Celtic board members names went for now but not really interested in any of them ..When i seen Bobby Lennox walk down holding training boots ..i shouts over his name to him ..he stood awaiting my arrival
Anyhow shook hands and recalled Bobby and that great Celtic team growing up in the 60s and had got my late Father see Jinky Johnstone my then fav Celtic player play ..Then seed was sown for to get my Dad take me see Celtic play more often and he wasnt a Celtic or Rangers fan but he took me and then we went other games and then he was a Celtic supporter
just thoughts were with us were Celtic played best football ..Myself a young guy loved the hoops strip and jinky
Anyhow back to another great Celt Bobby Lennox and he i never mentioned European cup but Bobby then went into that very final in 1970 saying that is one game still rankles his memory ..Said If it was one week later then its a Guarantee we Celtic would have won that final ..he said we never turned up , he never said why not , but i know it was this 2 days before fly out the Bonus told No Bonus had something to do with Celtic not playing well at all ..Bobby did say bit Feyenoord deserved the win in end of extra time as were better on day ..as said he followed that up with in brackets ( If that final was one week later then its a Guarantee we Celtic would have won it as we knew we were a better team than Feyenoord were ..He went onto say Leeds Utd would have won v them .
Sais Leeds were a better team but we won v them in both games in Semis because we turned up ..Celtic boards have never been any use back them days and same today via their penny pinching at all times . Celtic few yrs ago would have made Champs leagues but for boards greed several times failed because of not having better players deserved at Celtic park and could have but would not pay going rate .. But this side won European cup 3 yrs before in 1967 v Inter Milan in Lisbon is historic as is very first of that trophy ( Big Ears ) now known as chmpions league trophy nd Celtic very first winners of such ..As yr before 1966 was a white jug like trophy won by Real Madrid v Bayern Munich ..
But Yes Celtic team back them days could hold their own v the best teams and were some very good sides around Europe back then . Memories last forever them were best dys of my life . Rip to all players not with us today and personally i say Rip to my Father who took me see my favs perform many a time as a youngster .
Brilliant video ..and you got a hell of a lot right 👍
Good enough to change the way the game was played.
As a bluenose, this Celtic team was really something special.
6 Green Hoops and 7white Hoops. It wiz written in the stars. C.
Came along way since the other day 7 1
Celtic should have got to the cup winner cup final in1966 they beat Liverpool 1 -0 at parkhead but lost 2 nil at anfield in the semis but Bobby lennox had a perfectly good goal chopped off in last minute the final was in Glasgow and Liverpool lost
Should have? Oh you mean they didn't 🤣
The absolute best team ever.
They won one European cup so they won’t go down as a great
After that semi final stein told his players hed NEVER ask them to play like that shsin, celtic as a club have never been the type to play for a draw but for whatever reason he sent them out to do that and he regretted it big time.
God rest you Jock and all the lions
They were exceptional . The best British club side between 1965-66 and 1973-74 . They so very nearly made it to that Cup Winners Cup Final in 1965-66 and to those European Cup Finals in 1971-72 and 1973-74 but for Internazionale and Atletico Madrid . They had incredible strength in depth in that squad . STEiN was able to see and use all the formations that I can possibly think of . These were definitely copied by AJAX . STEiN would have been a fantastic manager of a UK team , say , at the World Cup in MEXiCO in 1970 . It is a reflection of GLASGOW CELTiC that the following players would have AUTOMATiCALLY been in that side .. EG .. BANKS or JENNiNGS : jARDiNE or REANEY ; 'Tam' GEMMELL ; MULLERY or BREMNER ; ENGLAND , McNEiLL or John GREiG ; Bobby MOORE or George CONNELLY ; JOHNSTONE or Charlie COOKE ; Bobby MURDOCH ; George BEST ; Bobby CHARLTON ; Bobby LENNOX .. remember substitutes were allowed for the first time .. jiMMy JOHNSTONE starts all games .. imagine the opposition facing up to a forward line of JOHNSTONE , BEST and LENNOX with them all rotating and attacking on the ground from central positions - nightmare ..
Interesting how Celtic fans never mention the club's easy route to the final in 1967.
Hail hail
From mid 60s to mid 70 s Celtic were a proper top European power . All went pear shaped from about 75/76 onwards unfortunately
What annoys me is the fact that Scotland had some of the most talented talent squads around that era. Pick a position and I bet any one of them would have a chance at a spot in a world team. But no! The blazers stepped in, surrounded by sectarian bigotry, and let our country down. Oh what could have been…
Nah! I remember all the bragging and bravado before the 1978 World Cup finals. Who can forget the lyrics to that cheesy song that went 'and we'll really shake them up when we win the world cup'? and they were utter failures.
Big jock knewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww
He knew he had to help rangers fans who were dying in the Ibrox disaster. Helped lift the dead and injured into ambulances.
Bet you didn't even know that, showing you only support rangers because of hate and bigotry.
Fergies Man Utd and Guadiolas Man City are a tactical copy of Jock Steins Celtic!
Celtic were the best team in Europe without any foriegn transfers, thus make them the greatest club side in history!
Deluded.
Its crazy that celtic 2024 won against Manchester city💀
It was a friendly.
It's hilarious how Celtic fans brag about the players all coming from within 30 miles of Glasgow. So what? It just shows they couldn't attract anyone to travel more than 30 miles to play for them
