Terrible Scottish league. Should be a First Division with the clubs only playing each other twice. Like to see Aberdeen or Dundee United or a club other than Celtic or Rangers win it. I was going to support Dundee United if my London club had gone bust .... Eamonn Bannon and a great team.

    • @recruitmentch

@@pavolkrajcovic745 money talks. Slovakia, Finland, Norway, Ireland, and even Denmark have relatively similar populations to Scotland, and yet no one externals pays any attention to the leagues of those countries. But they do to Scotland's due to to its history and pedigree. You saying it is a 'farmers league' just highlights woeful ignorance. what do you expect them to do? they can't pay tens of millions for players.

I know. How could Bezos or Musk not get into golf, buy a castle in Scotland and find £1000M behind the sofa to throw at a football club? We need some Scottish honeytrapper to make that happen.
It's a weird football culture, to be honest. 90% of the attention is on two clubs. Without some rich benefactor taking a Hearts, Hibs, Aberdeen or similar and just burning money on them then I don't see how any club breaks the monopoly. They'd need to produce an entire team of kids who are already a level above the pros they have.

Not entirely fair. Just inexperienced. He had bad injuries to deal with and because he was inexperienced he had no plan B. He could’ve changed up formations, encouraged different tactics.

Not only did he fight his way back from getting Guillain-Barré syndrome and came back stronger than ever, he' s also received the Olympic Commitee Fair Play award. I can't help wonder though, if he wouldn't have ended up playing for one of the better mid-level teams in the English Premier League, if he hadn't become sick just when he was reaching his prime, because his playing style was perfect for the English game at the time.

Man, this brings back so many memories! I think what one of the journos said about Barnes being ahead of his time in regard to formation and system is possibly true. This was a time the general perception of football in the British Isles were firmly rooted in, quoting a famous manager, "four four fucking two". Anything else was deemed sacrilege. Even Glenn Hoddle received a lot of flak for playing 3 at the back during his England days. Some would argue that system style managers have never truly been accepted as such, remember the vitriol Sarri received at Chelsea? He was just as stubborn as Barnes was.
It is odd that Barnes never went on to another managerial role. He certainly had the talent.

Although Barnes was obviously out of his depth, a lot of the players need to look at themselves too. I always found Berkovic to be an irritating wee fanny with a god-awful attitude, and Ian Wright's attitude wisnae much better - "wouldn't it be fun to have a bit of a laff and a joke in old jockoland to finish my career? Play at 50%, have a laff, and show the jocks how it's done. Nice easy little earner before I put my feet up". The other story about Wright is that on the pitch he was constantly telling opposition defenders how much money he had and how they should be lucky to be on the same pitch as him. Wee prick who's time at Celtic was mercifully short.

Celtic should never have signed clapped out players living on past memories looking for a last payday.

His ego was a real problem. And he never learned anything from it. Failed as a manager. He still thinks he was just unlucky.

Some team on paper, this was when the gap in finances across the European leagues wasn't as huge as it is today ,some really good players in the spl then ,not everyone went bankrupt acquiring them though 👍

What a team Celtic had then. Tbh, my recollection of Barnes was that they were incredible under him, and it was clicking. Which this video kind of shows… But it seems the rumblings behind the scenes were his undoing. Especially Berkovic. You also can’t change that much in a winning team. Souness did it at Liverpool too, and it similarly didn’t work.
You feel Barnes should’ve been given another go somewhere though - when they got it right - it was sensational

I was only 10 at the time, I remember it being a shambles, but after watching this I think everyone was overreacting badly. Being only a few points behind a decent Rangers team, and winning 5-0 every few weeks, does not strike me a catastrophe.
