- In the early Noughties, intimidating Celtic defender Bobo Balde Struck fear and terror in to the hearts of the opposition in stadiums up and down scotland.
However despite being a fan favourite, the fearsome and formidable centre back spent the latter patter of his Celtic Career, languishing on the Bench or rotting in the reserves. Why?
In the 20 years since I’ve never watched any replays or highlights from Seville. Wasn’t ready for this I’m away for a lie down now 😂
Bobo is an absolute legend one of the most loved players
Not loved by the opposition!
Despite his negatives he is still a cult hero with the Celts.

Bobo ( the brick wall.) balde. You couldn't get round him. You couldn't go through him. And you couldn't go over him. A brilliant servant to celtic. Love bobo.
When it was his day, he was an undoubted, unpassable colossus. When it wasn't his day, he was an accident waiting to happen. However, the good absolutely outweighs the bad. I'm surprised his outstanding performance in the 1-0 win against Manchester United in the Champion's League in 2006, having not played for ages and only being brought in because of a defensive injury crisis, didn't get a mention in this video. He was so good that night and it was a massive surprise considering how little he had been playing, as he was completely out of the picture by that point.
Bobo Balde was world class in his prime. Alongside Mjällby and Varga, Pretty unstoppable.

@@user-ds3tf1zo8z in those days, defenders didn't need to be good at the feet, it was all about stopping the ball going in the back of the net. Tbf to Balde, he was Able to make runs out of the defence and make simple passes, which is exactly he needed to do

I’ve watched a lot of Celtic defenders in my time and he is the only one who could clear the halfway line with a clearing header.
The power he generated was mental.
Forwards literally shat themselves when they came up against Bobo especially when they were playing for teams who went route 1 in the air.
The big man seldom lost an aerial battle.
Loved the big chap one tough defender especially against that mob.

Yeah same……went to my first game in 1991, I thought shite football, finishing 3rd or 4th and watching the likes of Wayne Biggins, Tony Cascarino, Mark McNally etc in the hoops was just standard. Winning the league in ‘98 was of course special, but the 6-2 Rangers game really felt like the dawning of a new era. The O’Neill years were truly special 🍀

He played GAA since he was a child, don't kid yourself about his national identity. Many other players were the same - George Best, Paddy McCourt, both of whom made no secret of the fact that they didn't identity as "Northern Irish" with Best privately calling for an all Ireland team when he was playing along with others like Jennings too.

Personally I think it was Rab Douglas who cost us the final, he was at fault for at least 2 of the goals. Having said that both of Balde's yellow cards that night would probably be straight reds these days

Hospital pass expert but hardy as anyone ever to wear the Hoops. Strachan couldn't wait to get him out tho and tbh, nobody wanted to pay him as much as we did. Heartbreaking in Seville, Bobo let his heart rule his head and got the red, big man was rough but you could guarantee he'd give his all on the pitch and us fans loved him for it,

As a Rangers supporter i do not mind one bit giving a player his flowers when its deserved. And he more than deserves his. He was a superb defender and i cant deny just how good he and that defence was back then. Until Strachan came along and he was utter mince and get it tight from his own fans. Nothing new to them. I've attended a lot of football in Scotland over the last 20 years and can tell you that being the most feared defender in Scotland is like being the most feared toy in Sunnyside Daycare 😂
If the ball was in the air the guy was unbelievable. If the ball was on the ground and he had time on the ball the guy was shambolic.
I was playing as a kid pro youth at motherwell and remember thinking man wtf would i do going head to head with this man .. then to think he was playing with the under 19s training must have been scary for those boys that were going up against him in a bounce game.. and he held that much muscle his physicality could lead him to make some rash challenges.. a guy like deco bobo goes to get the ball .. which they guys he idolised when they were playing in the 90s early 90s one in italy at ac milan the other in france .. they could have gotten away with challenges like that.. football was more psycal back then especially in Italy when Marcel was playing for milan he made challenges like that and if fe got contact with the ball it wouldn't have got him a yellow card problely not even given a freekick away .. he got the ball 🤷 the man aswell went right through him but got his foot on the ball full contact made a tackle poor deco now get up get on with it 😂😍 different era of football.. but in the 2000s imagine being a teenager not a man yet . And big bobo is grumpy you actually get past him have the cheek to nutmeg him 🫣 you would be shitting yourself after it knowing im going to pay for that.. and he might not even try to hurt me just win the ball out muscle me .. battling with that type of built machine your still a teenager 😮 yeah that give you nightmares going to training especially if you were a talented but young still skinny not got your man strength yet teen whos talented but small for his age .. yeah that wouldn't be fun the big man was a unit freak gentics absolute tank of a man.. theres alot of sports if you got him when he was young trained him made him love the sport.. guy could have been a French Olympic level judoka . Totally agree. He was a complete liability. He let us down time and time again in the big games, and not just in Seville, but also countless Old Firm games, especially that 3-3 at Celtic Park. God knows what Martin O'Neill saw in him. It's incredible we won as much as we did with him in goal.
