Phil Sgrosso from As I Lay Dying - "Vacancy" verse 2B/transition

This song is from The Powerless Rise album, released in 2010 on Metal Blade Records.

This riff is heard earlier in verse 1B but because the song was still developing, the drums had to be more focused on building and ramping things up until the first chorus hits. SO, once we’ve done a pass through the first chorus, you’ve got most of the parts that make up your song. If you want to keep the listener intrigued, new variations and dynamics should be introduced. That is why by verse 2 of the song, it was time for something heavy to drop with a familiar riff you already knew. It’s definitely a busy riff for the right hand with the combination of downstrokes/alternate power chord strumming/single note triplet galloping. What makes the part exciting to me is also the 2nd half when the riff melody is played an octave higher and is more chimier with the high strings resonating throughout. It’s helps build the tension a little more. I had to detune the high string a full step in order to have the high note be in the same key as the root note of the song, that way it can be used freely at any point BUT you’ll have to adapt when playing notes on that string. I also have a tendency for extensions or tags on sections, sometimes just a tiny bit of added time can help the next part have more impact. So the climbing single note run gets some harmesan cheese sprinkled in followed by the glorious high note melody in the break, then falls back into chorus and it feels nice and relieving, like you worked a tough job all day then can finally go home and sit on the couch haha. Overall, this part (for this song) brings the tension and tension is always good to have for other parts to provide relief.⁣
