Carne asada fries are not on the menu at most Mexican sit down restaurants. However, they are generally an item on the menu of just about every Mexican taco shop in the county (which seem to be on every other corner here, lol). Unfortunately, they are not all made equally, some are better than others, just like any eating/dining out experience. They are super easy to make at home. Lived in San Diego for 3 years, I regret leaving. It's a bit expensive (rent/housing wise) but so much to do without spending much money. So many different cultures.
Brings me to the question why actually San Diego is that expensive? It struck me during my last visits how much higher rents are and what you have to pay for groceries/restaurant bills.
I remember around XMas it got down to the lower 50's and I saw this woman with her kid and she had the kid in a parka and mittens! It was the funniest thing.

You forgot to mention not to miss out on a Padres game. The stadium was ranked America's best ballpark in 2016 and since the Padres are lousy you can get field level seats in the $25 range if you look hard
I'm a Giants fan but my daughter moved to San Diego so we went to see the Padres and Giants play. They have a beautiful stadium. And if your the type that doesn't like to sit but would rather walk around, they have tickets less than $20 for that.
I lived across the street from Petco and no one has said this: you can watch the game on the screen from the grass I am told....free! I listened to billy joel last concert free. Also getting to and from the stadium is traffic free. Everyone takes the trolly!
@@xkimikimjax7768i lived in SD for two years, lived six blocks from the park, and worked down the street... You can see nearly EVERYTHING on the big screens, and hear every concert, for free
It's great for a visit, yes. If you want to live there, brace yourself for a village mentality (surprising in a place of this size) and attitudes you may find uncomfortable. In 2003 people there _spontaneously_ took to the streets in support of the invasion of Iraq, for example.
Don Pedro's Chula Vista (large portions, low prices, authentic family owned) Burros & Fries - A few locations (Hash Brown-California burrito) Lolita's (people swear by this place, corporate mexican food, decent, expensive) Tijuana (you might as well, lol)
Depends what you mean by "real." If you want to see that realities (homelessness, crime, etc.) that are present in a big city, LA is better...but if you are looking for a more "fun" vacation, San Diego is better by far.
Once you'll go to the USS Midway for a tour: 1. DON'T underestimate its size - the tour will really take the whole day long. 2. If you've arrived pretty late (after the noon) to cover the whole tour in a single day and you kindly asked to leave the premises as museum is closing... DON'T forget to ask for re-entrance stamp on your ticket upon the exit. You'll be allowed to continue your tour the next day with no additional charge!

@Veronica Delgado wow the fuck is your problem? The dude is right. I'm Mexican too and grew up minutes away from the border and always ate authentic mexican food, but he's right. Ask anyone about taco shops and they will almost always instantly bring up cali burritos and carne asada fries. Everybody in SD fucking eats them and loves it. Also how was he being racist? People like you is why they call us snowflakes and shit, calm the fuck down.
I'm not sure why +Veronica Delgado is getting defensive about nothing. I'm a San Diego native and Mexican-American too. Cali B's are good after a night of drinking. Everyone loves them here.
I'm a former east-coaster (NYC/Miami) now living in Oceanside, the northern most coastal town in San Diego County. The climate along the county's coastal areas is second to none. All of my friends from other states absolutely love San Diego, and visit here as often as they can.
I've lived in San Diego for 21 years, and here's my input on the 2 hour traffic. He is correct, we do have a lot of traffic, but in my experience, it makes a 20 minute trip into an hour long one at most. Not two hours lol :0 The best times to actually drive around in San Diego on the 15, 163 or 78 are after 9 AM -3 PM and after 6-8 PM. Overall, great video, and I recognized all the locations you put up in your video! :D
Same with the 5 & 805. South Bay to Mission Valley rush hour traffic is approx 45-mins to an hour most days. Mission Valley home clears up long before 8pm from my experience.
Carmen Maria the trolleys last stop is in San ysidro which is the border town of Tijuana and you can just cross walking just follow the crowd lol. You can cross back with just your ID i do it all the time BUT the duanas Can stop you when you’re trying to cross into tj, ask for your passport and if you don’t have one they can turn you away.
@@lovebug8482 : On coming back to the U.S. from Mexico, technically you need a passport, passport card, or I believe that a "Real ID" driver's license/ID will work. When in TJ, watch where you step, the pavement can be uneven.
Carmen Maria if you are considering doing that I highly suggest it! Just be smart Tj does have a dangerous reputation for a reason. But don’t let that stop you. I’m a local and I love taking the crossing with friends every once in a while. Is a strange experience Tj and SD are so different it’s like going through a portal to another dimension
I had to watch this because I am from San Diego, I was curious to see what you had to say. You made some great points. I work in hospitality and I wish more people watched this before they visit. Most people don't expect to pay for parking at most places so when they arrive they're shocked and upset that we charge for it but it's everywhere out here. On the few times it does rain during the year we're all outside memorized by it because it is a rare to see it, except this year, we seen more rain this year then the past 10 years. I very much agree with your statement about LA vs San Diego, we're definitely much different when it comes to things to do, the people you meet, etc. I moved from LA to San Diego because I noticed San Diego was much classier than LA, much cleaner and much more mature. Great video, I am now a subscriber.
For the museums, selected museums are free on Tuesday's! Just make sure to look up on the balboa park website to find out which ones are free that Tuesday 💚 and to save money on the zoo's, Groupon! Buy a ticket from Groupon. Hardly anyone here buys a ticket at full price.
Ill TELL YOU THE DONTS !! If you are driving 65,70,mph in the fast lane get the hell out the way!! If your not traveling 80 mph+ GET in slow lane!! Thanks you.
This is true, but the fear comes from a number of reasons. 1. no rain causes oil and automobile fluids to build up on the road, and the first rain causes the roads to become an ice rink 2. A lot of people here do not regularly change their wiper blades or tires because of the lack of rain, when rains happen, they are screwed 3. poor draining /low lying areas cause substantial water build up not only on roads but sections of freeway as well
Mark, I just want to say how much I appreciate your videos. You give great, helpful information. You don't come across as brash or "in your face" at all and that adds a lot (for me) that the information you give can be very much trusted. You really look like you enjoy the places you visit and that is a great quality. You see the positive (and help others) to see it as well, at the same time taking note and incorporating any "bad" stuff. Keep it up!
I feel like SD is a bit of a paradise simply because we're smack in the middle of _everything_ , and two hours in any direction would get you ocean, desert, mountains, or Mexico. Plus the culture is really diverse simply by nature of all the people mushing together. But the thing is-- everyone who lives here _loves_ SD, plain and simple, and I feel like through the years the city has been shifted and changed and crafted to reflect that love.
I live in San Diego and have to disagree with one point. When it rains, people don't say "oh no, this is horrible, etc", instead, they will go outside and start dancing in the rain. I remember the first time it rained in the winter after some 300+ days of sun, and legit almost my whole class ran out of the classroom and started goofing around, spinning in circles, etc. It's quite a big deal, especially in a particularly dry year. (around two years ago it only rained twice during the winter, I was very sad...) When you see it's raining, it's something to run and tell your friends about, and then excitedly crowd around a window to verify, at least in my high school. But yeah when driving San Diegans do tend to treat rain like the end of the world, haha.
That saddens me a bit. If you knew the thunderstorms I've been through, the snowstorms, the torrential rains, the below zero weather, wow. If you're still young seek out those experiences, especially the thunderstorms. They are wondrous.
I was visiting San Diego, driving on the freeway, when it started to rain. I've never seen every other car slow to 25mph...because of rain. Where I live, we call the oily rain "first rain" and stick to the speed limit, it's perfectly safe. We just limit changing lanes and other activities that increase accident risk unless necessary. 25 is overkill and honestly less safe than slowing down a bit and paying attention. I saw so many drivers hitting (smashing) parked cars in the middle of sunny days that it's a running joke I my family. I love San Diego, but if I move there, I'm installing steel bumpers and 24 hour dash and rear cams on my car.

Funny that you released this video the week of Comic Con. Us locals and especially the ones that live/work downtown (like myself), are gearing up for the chaos of all chaos!
TH-cam knows I am going to San Diego and have watched your videos before, and made this awesome recommendation! Glad to see you made a video on San Diego!
Your comment regarding rain is spot on. Having lived in California for decades, experiencing years of drought...rain, even a drizzle is an event. Earthquakes on the other hand, not so much...commonplace.
I was sitting outside having dinner and it wasn't even sprinkling, more like maybe a light mist and everyone ran for inside the restaurant. The employees were worried that I was sitting in "the rain" eating and I had to convince them I was ok sitting in "the rain" though after the whole meal I had like 3 dots of water on my glasses. It cracked me up. And everyone leaving the restaurant was losing it when they came outside into the mist/rain :)
On average the city sees less than 30 days of rain a year. Therefore the climatization of the locals are surely different from other regions which might be more humid, or wetter, or colder. It is a desert in disguise, as is all of Coastal Southern California due to the vast aqueduct systems which provide the waters (primarily from the Colorado River (and to a lesser extent Northern California, Sierra Nevadas, and desalinated sources)) which support the millions who live there
Great video! San Diego is my home and I absolutely love it. 12:07 to answer your question. SD is a very active community because of the great all around year weather. I've lived in several cities and SD is by far the most active (cycling, hiking, surfing, etc). There are a lot of healthy market and restaurants in SD as well but if you're on vacation, I don't think eating healthy is on the agenda lol.
Oh my goodness, Wolter you were in San Diego and we missed you....I love your vids.i just went to Balboa park 2 days ago, one of my favorite places..-san diegan.
Hi Mark, Your video fills in the gaps that all the other ones out there lack. You speak as if you are a local! I love the practical advice such as looking both ways when you cross the boardwalk at the beach. Sometimes if feels like you're running across the freeway. Anyways, I was very impressed. I was born in San Diego and lived there until I was 27. Now I live there several months out of the year. It's the best of the big cities in California, I believe.
I took a three-day trip to SD with family and spent 2 of them in Balboa Park- definitely not a city you can speed through. It’s a beautiful place, if you’re there, slow down and enjoy it! :)
San Diego is a neat place. Been twice. Was there in winter and saw Spreckels organ pavillion (free hour concert on Sunday afternoon) That was cool. Seaport Village is a nice little touristy place of shops and places to eat..street performers/ all along the beach.
Greetings from Mission Beach! Give Belmont Park a visit, it features the Big Dipper coaster and the Beach Blaster. You can get a great view of SD from the Cabrillo National Mounument on the tip of Point Loma.
I grew up in Los Angeles in the '70's & 80's and moved to San Diego in the '90's. Diego is so fun and beautiful. I left Cali in '97 and I miss it Not the expenses though
Glad he didn't mention the hands down best town in San Diego, which I will refrain from naming because its the best kept secret. Lived in San Diego county my entire life and didn't find this place til I was in my twenties. Now that I live in this town I'm never leaving. If ya know ya know.
Loraine Spencer I have been living in the Bay Area for the last 6 months and have been there several times hoping to have a good experience but the city filthy and there are homeless people everywhere which is really sad. It smells like urine because they’re aren’t enough public bathrooms so people just pee on the side walk. We’ve literally walked past someone shooting up on the side walk as well in broad daylight. We’ve been followed by a crazy person who started shouting at us because he thought we were looking at him. We’ve had people stop us in the street asking for money. The super touristy spots are still fine but everything is over priced and the experience is just ok, it’s just not worth the time and money.
As a native San Diegan, I think you've done an excellent job representing my home, and it is very much appreciated. Wish I could've bumped into you and bought you a beer, looks like you were at O'Briens. Great place down the street me.
Good point about the bridge. Not long ago, a speeding drunken sailor flew off the low end of the bridge and killed four people enjoying the park below.
I'm from the Midwest but I've been living in SD for almost 10 years now. It's amazing. Best city in CA, imo. I definitely agree with this guy. I think he's got some nice pointers
From a San Diego Resident to those who want to visit San Diego but want to avoid/know the rush hour: Freeway 5 and 15 -South are around 3-6 PM. -North around early mornings around 6-9 AM. Trust me if you want to visit and get stuck in the freeway, its a living nightmare. However, it's only on weekdays, weekends aren't much of a hassle.
@@nxlckindumbz4929 tbh.. and it's expensive there's nice stuff but once you live here for a while you've done everything and it's boring. Plus the people are just ugh..
Comic Con has free dedicated tranport from all hotels in the area, even hotel circle to and from the convention center that runs 24 hours during the convention. Bring good walking shoes during sdcc.
M.Ronan yah I just came back from SDCC... can not recommend enough that anyone planning to go at any point make sure they get a hotel that is on the shuttle route. It is an incredibly convenient (and most importantly free) system to get to and from the convention center. If you can get a hotel on the early bird sale... do it. Just... do it. I can't imagine how much more difficult my trip would have been without the SDCC shuttles. I likely would have missed atleast a couple of my desired panels had I been forced to deal with Taxi services or Uber and then walk the rest of the way to the convention center. As long as you plan your departure time from your hotel in advance, the shuttles are life savers.🙂
StealthPsyren Embrace the weird. I attended cc for 30 years. I stopped buying badges and instead hang out downtown in the hotels, restaurants and bars for a few days. If you work downtown, ask for days off during the convention.
Nice, but I disagree about the trollys. I used them a lot when I was there and found them great. Clean, safe and affordable. And with bus connections, you can get all the way to La Jolla.

Heh you got a shot of my sandwich! Nice. OMG and my face. heh. Thanks for the Beer to the Rescue shoutout and GREAT ADVICE in this video! Esp asking your hotel concierge about traffic patterns and when to leave to avoid traffic getting where you want to go. Rush hour is generally weekdays 7-10am and 3-7pm. There are a few loopholes during these hours but 90% of the freeways will be backed up like sardines.
Thanks Daniel and thanks for taking me out and giving me all those great tips. It was really nice meeting you and just hanging out. I cant say thank you enough.
Mission Valley is a great central location to squat convenient to most places in SD. Old Town is awesome and the haunted Whaley House museum is pretty neat as well!
Mission Valley's transportation options aren't as good. You've got to hop on the Hotel Circle buses then transfer at the shopping center or Old Town. Not to mention, there's barely any sidewalks and there are a _ton_ of bums living in the hills there. It's not that much more to stay down near Little Italy.

I'm a Giants fan but my daughter moved to San Diego so we went to see the Padres and Giants play. They have a beautiful stadium. And if your the type that doesn't like to sit but would rather walk around, they have tickets less than $20 for that.
He did give a shout out to Padres and recommended watching games at their stadium Petco Park at 15:00
But this was posted a year ago so he should of mentioned the gulls to

Unless comic Con in on, then San Diego turns into a mad house
It's great for a visit, yes. If you want to live there, brace yourself for a village mentality (surprising in a place of this size) and attitudes you may find uncomfortable. In 2003 people there _spontaneously_ took to the streets in support of the invasion of Iraq, for example.
I live in San Diego, what attitude did you notice?
JanPBtest What? That was 15 years ago
Another don't: don't avoid the dirtier looking, hole-in-the-wall, Mexican places with names that end in "-bertos" or you'll be severely missing out.
Don Pedro's Chula Vista (large portions, low prices, authentic family owned)
Burros & Fries - A few locations (Hash Brown-California burrito)
Lolita's (people swear by this place, corporate mexican food, decent, expensive)

I recommend going to a local taco shop, and trying a California burrito, a San Diego staple in my opinion!
Veronica Delgado Fite me! I’m also a San Diego native, burritos and tacos are both staples! North country rep!
I love San Diego’s trolley system! Granted, it doesn’t go everywhere, but it’s handy for where it does go.
Yes i agree very useful to go downtown, old town and mission valley area.
Not two hours lol :0
The best times to actually drive around in San Diego on the 15, 163 or 78 are after 9 AM -3 PM and after 6-8 PM.

So true about the rain! Anything more than a light sprinkle and we need to rethink our whole day.
:)
This is true, but the fear comes from a number of reasons. 1. no rain causes oil and automobile fluids to build up on the road, and the first rain causes the roads to become an ice rink 2. A lot of people here do not regularly change their wiper blades or tires because of the lack of rain, when rains happen, they are screwed 3. poor draining /low lying areas cause substantial water build up not only on roads but sections of freeway as well
I've lived in San Diego all my life, and I do not recognize this as a thing. Rain is no big deal.
I've lived here my whole life and I've never seen this either. Most people I know like to go out when it rains considering it hardly happens.
Keep it up!
Mark - If I am paying $54 admission for the San Diego Zoo, I am spending the entire day there. Period. Otherwise, it is not worth it.
yeah, it was a bit of a mouth dropping price
Especially when most other admissions in Balboa Park are relatively low.
They pay their keepers relatively well though, so it's worth it.

Thanks Aram. I loved the city would definately move there no questions asked
2 hours from LA on paper .. Six flags 1 hour from LA on paper so when your visiting LA it might be clever to take the Amtrack to SD
That because the oil/had that had been heated into the roads make them slick and can cause crashes.
That saddens me a bit. If you knew the thunderstorms I've been through, the snowstorms, the torrential rains, the below zero weather, wow. If you're still young seek out those experiences, especially the thunderstorms. They are wondrous.
My boyfriend has been living there a couple years (he’s Coast Guard) and he’s sent vids doing that! 😂

It is a desert in disguise, as is all of Coastal Southern California due to the vast aqueduct systems which provide the waters (primarily from the Colorado River (and to a lesser extent Northern California, Sierra Nevadas, and desalinated sources)) which support the millions who live there
Born and raised there, and I love earthquakes. Reason not so much. It messes with the roads.

Hi Mark,
Your video fills in the gaps that all the other ones out there lack.

GS Grant agreed! San Francisco was so disappointing the last time we were there. ☹️
Really, why? I haven't been to SF in 20 years, but I'm dying to go.
I see. Yeah, San Diego has a lot of that kind of thing, too. It's sad. Thanks!
Yeah. We call it "Bland Diego" because we're all dying to live there.

Comic Con has free dedicated tranport from all hotels in the area, even hotel circle to and from the convention center that runs 24 hours during the convention. Bring good walking shoes during sdcc.
thanks for the sdcc tips!
