    Location: Sydney Airport (YSSY/SYD)
A Qatar Airways Airbus A380-800, registration A7-APD performing flight QTR908 from Doha Hamad International Airport (OTHH) to Sydney Airport (YSSY) was cleared for the ILS approach runway 34L and then cleared for the visual approach runway 34L at Sydney Airport. After that they aircraft was instructed to contact Tower controller. Being on final the flight crew initiated go around at about 1000 feet because they were unstable. When they contacted Departure controller the pilot reported that they were unstable due to congestion in the communication and were never cleared for the approach.

Clearly cleared for the approach and visual …. Pilot standards have dropped significantly in recent years

I'd rather they went around when cleared, than landed when not cleared.

Timing is everything, esp in ATC work. We can't know the exact level of factors such as delayed comms, missed comms, confusion, and individual response to stress. Thankfully and commendably things were kept professional.

1:40 At this point Qatari 908 get’s cleared for visual approach.

His complain is about the clearance for a visual approach.

@@richpea2 Qatari definitely lied. They were cleared for the approach and Qatari read it back twice that they were for the ILS approach and then again for a visual approach.

@@Jopanaguiton That means the pilot monitoring/on comms heard it, it doesn't mean that both pilots heard and agreed that they were happy they knew what they had been cleared to do was, which is a criteria of most airlines to be able to call approach stabilized.

Is "there" Australia? Because that's where this is. When you say "it's part of their culture", who are you referring to?

@@richpea2 Um actually, yes it does. All 4 pilots would have been tuned to this frequency. All 4 pilots would have heard that transmission. The other 3 pilots would have heard the Pilot Monitoring read back those clearances. The PM may then said to the PF, 'cleared for the approach' whilst the PF very likely armed the localizer and glideslope from the ILS to be captured. The only time you press that 'APPR' button to arm those modes is when you have been cleared for the approach for your assigned runway. The fact of the matter is that they were indeed cleared for the ILS approach onto 34L (twice actually) which the crew did read-back and acknowledged, and then they were cleared for the independent visual approach onto 34L to which they too acknowledged and read-back.

I don't think they were trying to blame the approach controller. It sounds more like a slight language barrier, and they were trying to say that due to tower frequency congestion, they weren't cleared to land.

Would have liked to hear full ATC to know how congested the conversation was.

There wasn't anything dramatic here, just a misunderstanding and a filing prevention. Had Qatar landed they probs would have been sued for landing without clearance. Unfortunately the tower frequency was not recorded so i can't 100% judge on who's really at fault for the missed approach but as a former Sydney resident i do know, that at the point where inbounds switch from approach to tower frequency, they just get cleared to land and the outbounds are held until there is mininum 5 miles range between one arrival and the next arrival. No extra questions or clearances need to be made when switching from approach to tower frequency, so my guess about this case is if the tower had asked Qatar if they were given visual approach clearance, there was absolutely no need to do that considering they were in sight coming in. On the other hand, maybe the pilot got confused with visual approach and visual ILS clearance, which is most probably what happened, but if the ATC asked them in the meantime about it, they should never have. Instead like every other arrival, clear them to land.
