      iagorincon I need it too I have a serious problem with coyotes and nothing else is helping. This gun has distance, a shorter barrel and is fairly compact. The perfect gun for me, I can shoot one and quickly reload to shoot the others.

      50Stars 13Stripes i think a 45-70 is over kill for coyotes. A bolt action .17 hmr is sufficient enough.

    Yeah. I was trying to run the lever slow so it didn't throw my brass into the taller grass. It runs 100% if you work the lever normally

    Many people keep complaining about the quality of the Remington made Marlins. I have on built a couple years ago and it works very well. It was a little stiff. But several rounds took care of that I have no complaints. A really fun gun to shoot

    What a sexy rifle, with that cool color. Funny to see that lever guns are by no means outdated, with the Eotech on it, it looks like something that was invented this century.

    Added a silver Leupold 3-9x40 scope to look closer to the movie rifle. Problem was the loading gate, way too stiff, scraped bark off my thumb. My armorer talked to Marlin and he relaxed the spring. Night and day difference, loads like melted butter. This rifle is not for everyone. Requires some skill to manage recoil. 1" 1/2 at 50yds, 2" at 100 using 300 or 410 grain factory rounds. Love it!

    • @dthompsont3796

  • @williamschramm2761
    @williamschramm2761 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Buffalo Bore Ammunition has a 430 grain bullet pushing close to 2000 f.p.s. It will take a Cape Buffalo with no problem. The ballistics of this particular load is close to 458 Winchester Magnum

  • @Duckhunterbow
    @Duckhunterbow  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I've heard that too. I think they got it straightened out now. My action was a little rough when I got it, but I polished up the internal parts and it's nice now.

  • @Duckhunterbow
    @Duckhunterbow  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    The gun was 750. It is kind of hard to find the SBL model with the medium loop and rail already on it. I like the eotech on there, but it is a little high. I would add a cheek pad or something or go with a lower sight like a fast fire. The rail and ghost ring sights are made by XS, so you could buy that separate and put it on any marlin 1894, 1895, or 336

  • @Duckhunterbow
    @Duckhunterbow  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes. You can take the rail off, but the base for the rear sight is built in to the rail.

  • @Duckhunterbow

  • @Duckhunterbow
    @Duckhunterbow  10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Its the marlin 1895 SBL
    There were some quality issues in the lever guns for a while when Remington bought Marlin out. Not sure if they have been straightened out yet. You should probably check out the gun first before you bought one. Make sure the action is decently smooth,it won't be real smooth either way when it's new, and make sure the rail on top is strait all the way down where it mounts on the barrel. Mine is from before all that and has the "JM" stamp on the barrel

    • @xCRO3x

  • @Duckhunterbow
    @Duckhunterbow  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Depends on what you are hunting and where you are hunting. It would be good if you would expect your shots to be under 150 or so yards. Lots of 45-70s are used as "brush guns"

  • @Duckhunterbow
    @Duckhunterbow  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    I live in central Iowa. I haven't shot the 45-70 too much. Just out to 100 yards for now. I just got some stuff to reload for it since factor ammo is so expensive.

    Can someone with my knowledge explain is this a DMR? Just watched Wind River where he uses a Marlin 1895SBL and it was an awesome scene. Do you use this for sheer put down power and what other weapons are considered for this stopping power?

    The stock sights are fine. I just wanted to try the eotech.

  • @IHateYoutubeHandles615
    @IHateYoutubeHandles615 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I've tried a couple red dots on the 1895 SBL w/ the XS rail. Tried the Meprolight, and a 20 year old Trijicon Reflex (milspec). Both had the same problem; I'd have to chicken neck to use them because their optical axis is way to high over the bore of the rifle. You have a jaw weld, not a cheek weld.
    As cool as this rifle is with that rail, it's best used with either the stock (excellent) iron sights, or low mount rings and a scope with small diameter eyepiece. It cuts way down on the Tacticool, but function goes before form.

    • @Duckhunterbow
      @Duckhunterbow  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I actually have a small 4x scope on it now with extra low rings. You can barely slip a piece of paper between the end of the scope and the rail so its about a low of setup as you can get.

    • @IHateYoutubeHandles615
      @IHateYoutubeHandles615 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, I was hoping to do something hi-tech with mine, but for now I think it will be open sights. Scout scope would be cool but I've seen them on other rifles and am not as enthused about them as some are. I think a 4x scope is a great choice. Maybe on a quick detach base so you can easily switch to iron sights if the scope gets bashed.

  • @AngryLS1

    They've been used since the first bolt guns were made. They're also faster to shoot than bolt action guns and hold more rounds than a similar caliber bolt action.

  • @tonygharman
    @tonygharman 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have one of these and love it, i have a standard BSA 3x9x40 on it and use the Hornady 325grn leverlution rds in it. It does a great job, but I'm thinking of going with the standard 405grn because if you reload the brass is shorter on the Hornady rds and can't be reloaded with nothing but the Hornady bullet. So if you reload be careful not to get the brass mixed up. By the way, great shooting I don't believe I can shoot mine that fast and hit as well as you!

    • @Jack_The_Biker
      @Jack_The_Biker 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm picking one up in a month or so and then I'll be buying a Dillon reloading press since ammo is scare or expensive for it right now where I am at, plus I can tailor the round to my gun and get the best out of it

    What part of the country do live in? Its really beautiful there. Lots of long range shooting is done I can tell. I live in North Carolina. Lots of woods. The only long range kills we get are around 500 yards. And thats across someones cow pasture or a cleared out tobacco field. Whats the most range you get with that 45-70? I know they drop like a stone. I bet you really have to lob it out there.

      I like them as far back as I can so that I have more field of view though the site. You can mount them wherever though and with both eyes open it may not make much difference. Might just try it both ways before sighting in to see what you prefer.

    Is that flesh wound on your thumb from the extended hammer thing? I have an old JM stamped Marlin (albeit not the stainless barrel/loop/receiver one here). Mine just looks like grandpa's gun. What a timeless work of art. I want to add a big loop lever and a pic rail for red dot. How did it hold zero after that kinda punishment? EOtech makes pretty solid stuff. That hammer extension thumb though.....ouch! haha

      It's not from the gun. I cant remember what I did but I smashed my thumb with something. The eotech was fine on there but I put it on one of my ARs and ended up putting a 1-4x scope on the 45-70

    I’m putting my EOTECH on my 45/70 Immediately. If you zero the dock at 100 yards is the bottom of the circle a good hold for 200 yards?

    • @Duckhunterbow
      @Duckhunterbow  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You'll have to put your load info something like strelok or vortex lrbc and see how it works out. The ring is 65 moa so the bottom would be 32.5 moa below the center dot. Using the box info for the Hornady 325gr that would line up to about 480 yards. 200 yards would be around 11 inches low when zeroed at 100. That's just estimates, if you're going to shoot further you'd want to confirm on the range.

    • @Duckhunterbow
      @Duckhunterbow  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Less than that. Factory ammo is pretty mild. Stuff from buffalo bore or underwood recoil more but still aren't too bad. I loaded some 405gr bullets at max and they were probably around a 20 gauge with slugs

    oh I would love to have a lever action, but no need for one all the stuff I got now had just as much range and would be no good except to shoot on the range as we in indiana have no rife season for deer, only varmint like hog or other pests that are not regulated on privet land.

    Curious as to the distance your shooting at with that Eotech... looks to be about 50 yards, bot don't want to guess. And if it is, have you tried it at any further distances? Thinking that this would make a great hog gun/set-up if you ran into a bunch of scattering pigs....

    • @Duckhunterbow
      @Duckhunterbow  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is around 50 yards. I didn't leave the Eotech on it for real long, was just trying it out. I have a 1-4x scope on it now. I honestly haven't shot that gun much. I live in Iowa and you can't hunt much of anything with a rifle besides coyotes, and a 45-70 isn't the best for that. With practice you aren't really limited on range with an Eotech or similar type sight. On my AR I've shot steel fairly regularly out to 550 yards. The eotech or a low power scope on this gun would probably do great on hogs out to 200 or so.

    • @InkwellFoto
      @InkwellFoto 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Duckhunterbow why is the 45-70 ideal for hunting coyotes? I'm currently doing my research on lever guns & im trying to understand the use of 45-70. Also is the rail something commonly found to mount optics/scopes or is that custom?

      InkwellFoto the 45-70 isnt the best for coyotes. I was saying it would be good for hog hunting. I honestly dont have a real use where i live for a 45-70. It's just different and cool and I got a good deal on it. The rail and bigger loop comes on the SBL model
