  • We’re hiking from Canada to Mexico, again!
This year Prima, Skittles, and I will be attempting to hike our own original route from Canada to Mexico through Idaho, Nevada, and Arizona. The route will include a thru hike of the Idaho Centennial Trail and about half of the Arizona trail with the rest consisting of other trails, roads, and cross country segments.
As a note, these videos are a ways behind where we are actually at due to the remote nature of this route. Most of the towns we are traveling through are small (poor WiFi/cell service) and far apart. I’ll do my best to keep things continuous, but there might be weeks where I miss an upload due to technical difficulties, just fyi.
Also note: Prima and Skittles are wise to many of my techniques at this point. If they lag behind in shots it’s likely because they know I’m filming then and think it’s dumb. Sometimes Prima does get sore feet, and we then take time off, but usually it’s just then being too smart.

Our route might differ slightly due to map discrepancies and reroutes

I think my pack weight is similar to what it was on the Montana CDT, but it might be a touch lighter.
To be honest I’m kind of lazy with my routes. I have a general idea before I leave, but I research and adjust a lot as I go too which helps.

@@TheMostImportantStep good to be flexible with some routes . thiss one FOR SURE. unless u do alot of road walking and out of the way this trail is like no other. no trail crews. no hiker towns u name it. The Idaho Centennial trail
is unto it's self as no other in the 48. unless u have a plan otherwise, my heart is with you as not b4 !! i have not done it but my source is well experianced with it.
but i'd follow no matter if i could !!! so i'm quite curious as to how u tackle that 900ish mile trail. not all is so dramatic as i make it seem. but clear on parts i have been made well aware. but be sure you know i have faith in you. your wiser than i lol !!!!

Holy crap you designed your very own thru hiking trail? I'm excited to see what this route is like. Good luck! Out of curiosity, why did you choose to make your own route rather than hiking Southbound on the AT or PCT?

Thanks! There are variety of reasons. After hiking the Pinhoti Trail and enjoying the 5 weeks we spent doing that I’m not sure I can handle much more than that on the east coast. Also, ticks (yuck).
The PCT’s biggest downfall in my book is that it isn’t very dog friendly. While I will have to deal with the “Grand Canyon Problem” at some point on this hike, that’s one spot compared to most of the Sierra, California state parks, etc. Also the whole permit thing is a bit annoying.
The biggest reason though is the people. I enjoy socializing with other hikers, but sometimes the drama and egos are just obnoxious. Hiking with the dogs is a pretty different experience and I have to do things differently to manage Prima’s Princess feet, mainly a crap ton of zeros. I have a hard time sometimes dealing with the vortex and peer pressure of being slower than everyone else, even though it’s mostly mental/all in my head. I make better choices when there aren’t other hikers around.
Above and beyond all that, I just plain enjoy the challenge. I love exploring and seeing new places. The ICT has been on my short list for some time and I fell in love with Nevada a few years ago on a road trip. While I get frustrated, anxious, and mad dealing with the difficulties of navigating using only somewhat reliable maps on GAIA, it also keeps me on my toes and it is rewarding solving the water, navigation, and terrain puzzle that it presents. I will admit that I do miss the Guthooks comments section though haha!
There’s also a lot of interesting interactions with the locals and I’ve never seen such kindness and generosity as when I’ve been hiking far from any established trail.
So I guess the moral of the story is I’m an anti social sufferfest seeker? There are more nuances of course, but that’s the gist of it.

Is it continuous? Or just the major N to S trails in each state? Assuming you just have the summer off since I thought you had your teaching job in AZ now.

This is a continuous hike. I fulfilled my ‘22-‘23 teaching contract near Durango and just opted not to renew it for the upcoming school year

I knew the other side of the far side of the lake would be off trail, but I wasn’t expecting the regular trail to be so difficult to find. It was a fun little scramble though!
