- QUICK FIX! TRY THIS 5 SECOND FIX FIRST! (SEE BELOW)
If you can load the normal interface menu, but nothing happens when you try to use your remote control, it is possible your remote has become unpaired from the Apple TV, so hold the remote close to the main unit and press and hold the menu button and the left side of the ring button above for about 6 seconds. You’ll see the indicator light flash at first, then stop. While you continue to hold down both buttons, after about 5 seconds the light will start flashing again. As you continue to hold, if you are fortunate, a little broken link icon (two opposing leaning ovals opposite of each other) will pop up in the top left-hand corner of your screen. Viola, you’ll now be able to move through the menu with your remote control again. If so, you’ve dodged a bullet.
How to restore & reset Apple TV to factory settings for 2nd and 3rd generation Apple TVs step-by-step video tutorial: Apple TV Phone Support: 1-800-275-2273. So, remove the cables from the back of your Apple TV and go to your computer. Ensure you have updated your iTunes software on your computer to the latest edition. After you've updated your iTunes software, close it. Then, connect a micro USB to your computer and Apple TV (it's smaller than a mini USB cable, so make sure you understand the difference - I give details in the video). You attach the micro USB cable right below the HDMI connection on your product. Then take your Apple TV power cord and connect it to your Apple TV. Shortly thereafter, the light will start blinking and do so throughout your restoration process. When I did this, my iTunes software opened automatically. The instructions say not to open your iTunes program on your computer before you do this because it might not recognize your device. My iTunes opened automatically when I plugged in the power cord. If it doesn't open automatically, you might try to open it manually, but make sure you plug in the USB cable and power cord before you do so. Don't get the micro USB cable confused with the mini USB cable, they are different-sized connectors. The Apple TV uses a smaller micro USB cable.
A window will pop up on your iTunes that asks you if you wish to restore your Apple TV. Click the button to start the process. Several windows will pop up automatically saying your computer is installing different drivers. I think there were 3 pop-up windows. Approve them all. I show you how to do this on a Windows computer, so a Mac may be slightly different. Then, follow the instructions through the process till the end.
When everything is finished you will get a message saying so. Then, go hook it up to your TV and go through the regular setup like you just purchased the unit. You'll need to choose your language, and you'll need to set the logins of your Netflix, Hulu, Vimeo, TH-cam and iTunes accounts, etc. to be able to access those.

This video show the method of fixing your 2nd & 3rd generation Apple TVs when your Apple TV's unresponsive and as a last resort before you go to the Apple TV or ship it back to Apple for a return or repair, you might try restoring your product. Usually, you can use the interface on your Apple TV while it's hooked up to your television, but if you can't access that feature, you still have this method as a backup solution. It takes 30 minutes to an hour if it's your first time trying this.
These are the official instructions from Apple to restore your Apple TV:
To restore Apple TV using iTunes:
1) Disconnect the power and HDMI cables from Apple TV and take it to
your computer.
2) Connect one end of a micro USB cable (sold separately) to the back of
Apple TV, and the other end to your computer.
3) Connect one end of the Apple TV power cord to the power port on the back
of Apple TV and the other end to a power outlet.
4) Open iTunes on your computer, select Apple TV in the Source list, and then
click Restore.
So, if your Apple TV has bricked and the remote control doesn't work, then use this method to restore your Apple TV 2nd and 3rd gen will likely do the trick.

Got the new apple tv a1469 model I bought off craigslist all fixed up. It was frozen on the home screen, between computer and settings. Remote flickered the lights, but wouldn't do anything else. My Apple TV decided it would not update itself via my tv set, and like you , I turned off and on numerous times to no avail. I unplugged and was heading for the Apple authorized service centre (bte, I live in Singapore), and had all the logistics working against me. After almost 2 weeks of being in my car, I decided that I should try hooking it up to the TV, alas! It still doesn't work.
I found your video and comes another "hurdle" of micro USB.. Then I tried using the phone cables for Andriod phones and viola! It worked!!
My experience is that, my iTunes did not open by itself after the driver update/ installation. So I had to click open the program, and now as I type, the Apple TV is updating itself.
Anyway, just like to leave a note to thank you for your video, and top share that if anyone here uses an Andriod phone, the micro USB is the same phone cable for these phones.

I have to admit I repeat myself too many times in the video and that drives some people nuts. I don't think I even needed to do a factory reset. I've found a new solution that might help some in the description under the video. It's a quick fix.
Great tutorial Glen! It worked perfectly after being patient and considering all the lapses of time iTunes and the PC made me go through, thank you very much for your patience and your effort to explain how it works.
What I did: I restored my daughter's Apple TV (probably 2nd generation, not sure) and the whole restauration process took about 15 minutes give or take, I used an old Toshiba LapTop with an old windows version, so I was not surprised about how slow it was.

Apple support sites are deliberately evading responsibility in a clandestine manner, supported by the lie that apple employees do not read the discussion forums, which of course, is ridiculous seeing as no forum in the world is void of moderation, and the fact that every time i post info that corroborates this fact, i am banned from the post, and my post gets removed (which also proves the presence of apple moderators/employees, and contradicts the lie). I am currently gathering enough evidence to litigate against apple because of their insane, evil clandestine actions on their discussion and support websites, because they are in breach by lying about the presence of employees, and their activities in deliberately sabotaging any user attempts to create transparency or post info which discredits them. For example, i have screenshotted the complete list of posts, follows, bookmarks and other user data of a certain 'Allen' who is definitely an Apple employee and is touring the forums posting hundreds of posts a day as replies, but has never started any content of his own (because he is a moderator)
Buddhist Amulets I'm not sure about the "cannot connect to server" message. After searching for "Apple TV Cannot Connect to Server" in a Google Search. It appears it could be one of many challenges. One I read was that the site could be undergoing maintenance. One said it could be with internet provider, like Dish Network. You can call Apple for support at: 1-800-275-2273 if it's within the first 90 days of the purchase. Sorry, I do not have the answer for you.

Oh Thank you Thank you Thank you so much!!!! You are a God send!!! Wow, you made it so easy with the steps and the visuals. I looked forever on Apple's site to figure this out and was so unsuccessful. All I had to do was listen to you about quitting itunes and then unpower the apple tv box and then put the micro usb cord in the apple tv then in the computer. Then I plugged in the power cord into the apple tv box and then the power outlet. Then just like magic (like you said) the apple box opened the itunes account and finally asked me if i wanted to reset it. I tried it without doing it your way and it did not work. So I followed your instructions to the letter and it worked!!!! You have helped me soooooo much! I cannot thank you enough!! (I have a 2nd generation and I have a MacBook so it does work the same way on Mac as it does on your PC) THANK YOU!!!!
I made the video so detailed and repetitive because it was a struggle for me to figure out how to fix it. I think most people are frustrated that it's so tedious. I leave it up because of positive feedback from people like you. I will say that my Apple TV has never bricked again after my restoration.
I hear you, and I agree with you. Hopefully, the details will help people uncomfortable with the process. The biggest pain to me was having to go shopping for a micro usb hub. It's hard to believe they make a micro and a mini so close to the same size.

Hey Glen, i did what jpett suggested, actually it worked, pushing the menu botton and hold it along with the left botton for 6 seconds, my apple Tv is working, thank you so much for this video, my kids were grumpy the whole day with no tv tomorrow they get to watch their cartoon movies, thanks again. god bless you.
My Apple TV remote didn't work again recently and pressing the menu button and the right side of the ring for about 6 seconds reconnected my remote's functionality as well, so I've added the quick fix in the description under the video.

I had an old 2nd Gen Apple TV that was jail broken or something and I needed to reset it but couldn’t find a way until you explained it in you video. I am pretty sure if they keep making such extreme decision as discontinuing platforms like TH-cam they will keep losing clients.

Ideally, you could use a cord that had a regular USB on one end and a Micro USB on the other. My cable had a USB that connected to my PC and a Mini USB on the other, so I bought a small adaptor at Radio Shack that converted a Mini USB to a Micro USB. The connection on the Apple TV unit requires a Micro USB. Before you go through the process of restoring the Apple TV using iTunes, check out the possible quick fix link I recently added in the description below the video.
Glen Woodfin My computer is old, so I don't have a HDMI connector. It may be possible to use a cable that has a regular HDMI cable on one end and a Micro USB on the other. You mentioned a Mini USB, but the Apple TV unit requires a "Micro USB".
I have a question, does it only have to be on a Macbook or can I do it on a pc with iTunes installed?

You should try the 'quick fix' rather than watching the whole video. You'll find the link under the video in the description. The video was made for tech novices with lots of reassurances. The quick fix can be done in 15 seconds.
I know, right. Videos these days should be appropriately titled: "I'm gonna talk a lot of shit because I mostly love to hear the sound of my own voice, before I get to the actual and useful information!" This 17-minute video should have been 3 minutes long - tops - if not for all the bullshit we have to endure!

I reset my 2nd generation apple tv and when I plug it back into my tv it continues to tell me to plug it back into iTunes even though I already did this and restored the factory settings... What should I do?

No problem I figured out that the Apple TV I had didn’t support the current software so it didn’t work and it’s stuck on this screen I ended up getting a jail broken fire stick and have every channel now lol

7 Month Update After I Reset My Apple TV: The fix that I describe in the video is detailed for even technophobes, so for the techno savvy, thanks for your patience with the length of the video. save you 17 mins
1 - get a micro usb (samsung etc - phone charger non apple)
2 - itunes should not be open
3 - connect usb cable - apple tv to pc
4 - plug in apple tv power
(usb driver will auto install)
5 - open itunes
6 - click on apple tv icon
7 - click restore apple tv
it will download and complete in one action
really dont know how it takes 17 mins to explain this, the whole process took 6 mins on my 3rd gen
Thanks... on my mac mini it only worked if I did not add the power... So just usb mini to mac mini computer with iTunes shut off. Then it would start up iTunes and allow me to restore. If any any time I put power cord on my apple TV2 it would not work. Hope this helps anyone else out there. cheers

By the way, technically, this is a video tutorial on how to do a software restoration and not a reset. However, I didn't think a lot of people knew the difference, so I used both words in the title to help those that might have done a seach for either term. The video tutorial demonstrates how to do an Apple TV restoration where one can restore it to the origianl factory settings. This also updates the firmware to the latest edition, which is a usually good thing that might fix some bugs.

Hi Julia, you are supposed to be able to restore your Apple TV by going to "Settings" > "General" > "Reset" > Then, select "Restore". It takes a while. If this doesn't work, then you should be able to reset and restore using iTunes as I describe in the video. Good luck!

I think it took me 45 minutes to an hour to reload the software, so I'm not sure about your situation. Sometimes, after a few minutes of downloading, the timer will drastically drop the estimated time it takes to download the software.

I got the 3rd generation apple tv nd I'm going at it all day when my remote stop working . I was using an app on my android phone to work the apple tv and even it stop working then I tried the menu and rewind pairing button simultaneously and it was no success then I did the restoration and my remote still won't function but the light woukd sometimes blink so I guess my remote is messed up completely

Lorrie, I wish I had an answer for you. If you can see the Apple TV interface displayed on your TV screen, but your remote control isn't working, then you can try the quick fix I've added in the description under the video. If that gets your remote working again, then navigate to "Settings", then click the "General" tab. Scroll down and click on "Reset". It should go back to the original settings. Then, it will go through the update process to install the latest software if you have it set on auto update. If you don't then you can manually choose to update the software.

Perez Prada Try clicking on the "Settings" icon, the select "Main Menu". You can hide or display icons. Maybe the TH-cam icon is set on "hidden". If that doesn't work, you can try "restart" to see if it was a loading issue. Under "General" settings, you could try updating the software.

I think the Apple TV 3rd Gen is selling for about $70. The 4th gen is supposed to be coming out soon. I think the Amazon Fire TV is rated the highest currently.

When I got my phone it does random things on it’s own bit a little wire don’t have a cover for it and I can’t buy one, so every time I drop my phone and those bit detach I would have to reattach them and sometimes the touch screen won’t work and when I get it to work certain parts of the screen wouldn’t want to respond and it was very frustrating, my husband introduced me to Warren Tech, who is a professional in the job so I contacted him via warrentech102@gmail.com WhatsApp 📲 +17242527621, he didn’t do it remotely I had to send the phone to him for repair

It would be so much easier if you would go straight the point on how to factory reset the Apple TV unit. Too much extra non-sense talk does not help you in creating a solid audience at all.

Thank you Alan. I recorded the video in several sessions and when I put it all together, I ended up repeating several things I'd already said. I made the video with technophobes in mind, so I probably over-did the explaining and did too much in real-time.. My Apple TV recently froze again. In other words, my remote didn't work. I added a quick fix in the description under the video. I'll bet a lot of people don't even need to do a factory restore. They just need to get their remote linked-up again.
I put a '15 second quick fix' in the description below the video. It will very likely work instead of having to download all the software.

Scott, I agree with you. The video was made for a complete tech novice. However, you should note, at the beginning of the video, I put a way to possibly fix the problem in 15 seconds, so you wouldn't need to watch the video. There is a link to that quick solution in the description.

Very likely it does as it overwrites all the software in the Apple TV memory. Give it a try.
