I just found this and it might help you guys in the comments with the same problem as me, but I had the issue that the icon didn't showed up. So after some time of reading I found out that you should have both the USB-c cable in and the power cable. Then you take your remote and hold MENU + PLAY/PAUSE in until it starts to blink rapidly and I continued to hold it in until it popped up in iTunes and now it's working! So that's a tip for all of you guys with the same problem as me! Otherwise it was a really good video! :D

@@HowToPM if search for gen 1 Apple TV ports you will see that it has a standard USB female port to plug things such as flash or hard drives. This port is what I call a destination port meaning data ends up there. Now if it was like a cellphone port(like Apple TV gens 2-4) then I would be able to perform the steps explained in your video. Now that I think about it, wouldn't it be more productive if you showed each one instead of just one? Or like I suggested just change the title so future people don't get confused

Superb advice!!! I couldn’t factory reset it from the remote, so did it this way and it worked great!!! All I wanted it for was to mirror from my iPad and works really well. It wouldn’t pick it up on my iPad as the last person has jailbraked it (I think) but all sorted now. Thanks again

Don't know if you'll see this comment on such an old video, but I have a 3rd gen Apple TV, connected it to my PC, opened iTunes, and there is no device showing up in iTunes. There is just an Apple logo when I connect it to my tv. Any suggestions?

Please help me 🙏🏼 My ATV (I think its 1st gen) turns on, metallic silver remote works, I can move around over the apps but after selecting one app ATV stays frozen and unfreezes after 5-10 seconds. 1. My computer & ATV are all connected wireless to the same wifi 2. I have the latest updated iTunes in my PC 3. I follow all these steps in the same and in different order, iTunes Keeps making an attempt to connect to Apple TV and always pops up an window saying: “Airplay device apple tv cannot be found on your network please verify your network settings and airplay configuration or select another device” 4. I connected the ATV directly to the modem with an ethernet cable and now I don’t get that message in a pop-up window but it still isn’t listed in File>Devices 5. After following your steps in the same order with ethernet cable connection a window offering a restore never comes up Can’t restore it with a remote, and can’t do it through iTunes, it never connects to iTunes, never listed on device list. Update: I’m currently reverting my computer to an earlier restore point to try with an older version of iTunes
I hate to say that but... I think apple tv 1st gen is now to old to run in our world. 2nd gen still work fine but they don't have TH-cam anymore. 3rd is just fine in my opinion.

I think the only way to factory reset it without update would be from the factory reset on the apple TV menu. But if you came watch this video, you are probably unable to reach it.
How To..yah it auto updated to latest to software.in any case for some stupid reason aptv3 is the only version that can not be jail broken...sucks lol..thanks for the response.

Are you serious? Every apple TV have a USB port at the back. Use the cable you need to connect it to your computer and do the same thing.

You have to have it plugged into a wall outlet, too.
You can’t connect the Apple TV 1st generation into the computer. There’s no port for that.

I'm trying this on my AppleTV gen2, but iTunes doesn't recognize it. It's connected to an outlet and my computer.
