Do you find that you need to clean this tank often? I moved my two common goldfish that I won from a state fair a month ago to a heavily planted 50-gallon tank with 5 danios because it was just too much to maintain the smaller 15-gallon tank. It's so planted I can't see the substrate it's covered in swords, runners, and java ferns and anubias, and java moss, banana plants, mostly plants they don't eat. The parameters in this tank are very stable and its mostly self-sufficient outside of needing to cut back trimmings. I'm worried that they goldfish are going to soil the tank. It's been a week so far, and everything seems fine.

I love that you show all the faffing and mess that go into creating a tank too, because those are the silly things that make it funny. And then when you're done, and you look at your masterpiece, and think "yeh, I did that" .... And then you turn around and see all the buckets, and water and bits of plant & rubbish all over the place in the rest of the room 🤣🤣🤣

I love the way you care for your fish. I also move my fish by hand, once they're used to it sometimes they'll go straight into it when I'm just fixing a plant. And the no filter for some of the really heavily planted tanks is how I have a lot of my tanks and they grow really well like yours. Love your channel

I have some goldfish in a stock tank pond outside. I've got hardy water lilies, rotala, bacopa, and even a couple spare crypts out there. The only plant they really mess with is floating plants. They nibble the roots off of any floaters I put in.

Delightful setup. Simple and attractive. Works so well with the goldfish. I know it won't work with the light fittings being in the way... but I'd love to see the setup with the HOB filter on the side of the tank to give a really clean, clear look at the back of the tank.

Your Betta tank reminded me of a 15 gallon I used to have about 12 years ago, with Co2, it got taken over by the Blyxa Japonica jungle I had going on. I was throwing loads of it away to make space for my Ember Tetras to swim. I decided to list it on ebay and I ended up selling loads of it, it was replicating pretty quick via runners sprouting and popping up.

You really make me want to try planted tanks Have been a fish keeper since I was a kid (38 now) and only once did I try plants and got Malaysian snails. lol so I gave up, but...I still have them (a loach has helped me minimalize them) so maybe I should try again! The new plants look amazing with the goldies! I think the darker substrate compliments them so well too, and I like it better then the light substrate you initially put in. Good choice MD! Loving the whole new look! I was wondering, if you put a little duck weed in now and then, it also might deter them from eating the plants? Idk, just a thought. Thanks for sharing what you do so well. Always a pure pleasure!

I watched a TH-cam video thr other day on a breeder of Ranchu goldfish in the UK. He breeds them in man-made ponds outside in a green house type shed. He was saying ranchus do best in a big area of shallow water cos of their shape, makes sense! They struggle in deep water.

I have some anecdotal evidence about plecos sucking on slime coats; I've seen it happen once; my brother was a shitty fish keeper and didn't feed the tank enough, and definitely didn't leave enough for the scavengers so they got a little aggressive. Once I started sneaking in sinking pellets and stuff it stopped. Your plecos and such probably leave other fish alone because you're caring for them properly.

    • @discordiacreates6669
      @discordiacreates6669 ปีที่แล้ว

That's exactly what I'm thinking with that idea, that and many scavenger fish sold as algae eaters are, in fact, scavenger fish and only stick to algae as fry because it's easy to get and small enough to eat. Once they start growing though... They've gotta get their protein one way or another and if they're not stocked with a bunch of short lived fish that provide an occasional carcass to feed on or target fed, they can get kinda aggressive when starved. Ofc though, the fish isn't the bad guy here, nor even the owner in most cases, the true culprit is ignorance as many people aren't warned about what they're truly buying and not all sellers know either. With time though that rare instance may become all but a myth as more awareness is spread about these awesome, often not so little guys, and I'll happily wait to see that day

I'm interested in knowing how this tank holds up over the next month, the plants look great rn but as someone who owns a comet goldfish rn, I would suggest hardier plants like anubias and java fern unless you're counting on a very fast growth rate to negate any nibbling. Though tbf, duckweed has shown to be an acceptable sacrifice in my experience to allow you to keep even an infamous tank destroyer like a comet fry in a planted tank. I'm not actually planning on keeping this around a year old fry more then a couple more months though, but then they'll be someone else's problem because I'm still far from owning a pond and wanna give them to someone else that does, since they're getting a bit too big for an indoor tank at 3in, 4in if you count the long tail ^^'. Good luck with your goldies though and I hope the plants survive since they'll definitely help the age old issue of every goldie keeper, they need all the help with filtration they can get and I prefer natural over mechanical
Also, one last thing, that bottle idea is genius and I immediately thought of how well it would work with a betta fish so thanks for that idea. Definitely storing that for later

I've felt similar about all the cautionary tales since coming into the hobby. There are no doubt best practices, certain types of fish that don't mix etc, and best water conditions for each fish. But everyone seems to have such varied experiences. I feel like quite a lot of the staples that get told to beginners are more like folklore than hard fast rules. Not saying to ignore other peoples' experiences by any means, just that mileage seems to vary a lot in this hobby. Was kind of glad to hear someone else feel the same way.
I've planted my Fantail aquarium because I feel like they benefit from environmental enrichment and eating it is a bonus for their diet, so whatever. Afterall, it's not a show tank.

    It's looks really beautiful!
Forgive but I'm a little worried about the roughness of the substrate- not sure if it will scratch them🤔

I can’t recall you ever using mopani wood MD! Thought about doing a mopani hard scape? Doesn’t float and has a ton of tannins.

hope the goldfish dont mess up the dirt layer. they are prone to rooting around the substrate

I've heard that goldfish can swallow and get choked by small gravels so it's better to use either fine sand or gravel bigger than their mouths

I believe he uses API Root Tabs, crushed up fine and sprinkled over the middle layer of his substrate?

I watched the Amazon video right before this one and I love it so much, but my understanding from getting my youtube degree in fancy goldies is that the hardscape needs to be limited to smooth items like you've done with the rocks here. I'm checking out goldfish setups because I'm trying to upgrade mine from their current, embarrassing stock tank. Do you have any ideas for how we could make a tank that has plants at the top, but for goldies, so no wood to help give a natural look? I can't think of anything that wouldn't have them just kind of hanging there very unnaturally. One thought was maybe like a shelf, with side supports that rest on the stand, so an upside down, squared U, with holes drilled in. Then I'm not exactly sure how I would secure the plants into the holes, but their roots would be dangling into the water and then maybe have some pothos or creeping jennies or a nicer vining plant to hide the bases of the taller plants and hopefully most of the shelf so that the whole setup is sort like encased in plants with more vines down the left and right sides. Maybe not having room for a light would be the issue? I am 100% an aquarium noob, probably trying to jump in too hard, but I just don't really have any other level :D I will start small though, I just want a little bit of an end goal vision.

Bristlenose don't eat slime coat, ottos do. Love the way you just leave the pearlweed grow doesn't work for me for some reason. Gets stuffed with muck since it sieves the water due to flow and algae take over all throughout it... end up discarding it eventually 😂
