Thank you for clarifying aquascaping and what it is. I like natural scapes and not the fancy Dutch style scapes that some scapers like to do. I posted a picture of one of my tanks on a Facebook Group and a guy who claimed to be an aquascaper proceeded to tear apart my tank and instruct me on what I did wrong. Even when I explained I had been in the hobby 40 years and liked the natural style scapes he berated me. It made me angry because if I had been new to the hobby he could have turned me off. Instead, he had picked in someone that was willing to fight back a bit. He ended up telling me I was stupid and didn’t know what I was doing. Sadly, it is people like this guy that can so easily ruin the hobby for others. You are so right to say aquascaping is whatever you like your aquarium to be. I love seeing the artistic creations some people do, but I also think they have made the hobby very intimidating for others. I absolutely love your channel because it is aimed at everyone. You used Anubia, I was hoping you were going to use Buce on that dragon’s head. I like the Anubia too. I like the air pump. I generally use one in my tanks. Sometimes I will add a small sponge filter for the same reason. Love the bubbles. It is all about what makes you happy.
I hate people like this as without people coming into the hobby it will disappear. I'm glad you were strong enough to shrug it off, it's such a variable hobby there is never going to be one correct style.
Never allow someone to tell you your vision of a scape is wrong unless it is because of something that will ultimately endanger fish or people. Precariously balanced rocks that could crash against the tank face, for example. However, I have bred fish in a deliberately sterilely clean and bare tank, and others in tanks you cannot see through the algae, mulm and plant growth. Dutch style is fine, for plants, not so great for rift lake cichlids or silver dollars though. Horses for courses. I was trying to explain to a guy the other day why a flow through trickle filter was not required for a soft water planted tank for rams and tetras, he just wanted to argue that it was the best, so that was what everyone should run. OK... so why are sponges so popular?
Every hobby is like this. Every. Single. One. No matter what you do in your spare time, there are people that take that activity to the extreme, and expect everyone to do it the "right way". I quit playing World of Warcraft a year(ish) ago, because people were acting exactly like you just described. There is ONE good way to play, and if you don't play that way you don't get in groups. It made the game boring, just like it makes the fish keeping hobby boring if everyone's tank looked the same. No one other than you has to see the tank every day, so if you enjoy it, that's all that matters.
@@skrounst I quit League of Legends for similar reasons. I love the bubbles! I have air in all my tanks, I just like the way it looks, and I hope the little bit of extra surface agitation is nice for the fish.

I have to admit, to my shame, my first aquarium was un heated in the UK .It contained white clouds, zebra danios, and bronze corydoras. Matt, the kit I'm always most jealous of which I see in your videos is your books. I have tons of books in my home, all of which I've read, but I don't have anything about fish. Someday I'm going to come to your house and sit in your fish room for a few weeks and do nothing but read your books and drool over them. When I get a call from home telling me that my aquariums are in dire need of help, only then will I leave, but not before I write down a list of the best of your books so that I can buy copies for myself!

Nice video again. I keep them in my little pond outside. Most of them survive the dutch winter (basically a long autum with a few days of frost). This year even have them breeding. Really nice fish to keep!
Matt, you have grown so much as a content creator over the last 12 months. Well done chap, this was another good video. Areas of improvement: You cant say that AquaScaping is a scary word then have your wood float, that will put people off. I put a dozen of these in my half wine barrel about a year ago. I now have hundreds! I live in the sub tropics so they coped really well over our winter.

I love the air bubbles coming out of the dragon's eye - so cool! I am very very new to the hobby, so don't know the scandal in adding this to the tank, but I like air stones myself.
Funny. Got bored with some of my cichlids so after 5-6 years let them naturally grow old and gave the other’s away. Now gone back to my early days in the hobby and set up a live bearer community tank. Swordtails and maybe a few mollies eventually. Getting me as they say excited about the future.
Cool! Using such a big piece of wood you could fix it to the tank with aquarium silicon ... works great and easy to get off the glas again with a balde!
Nice tank👍 Not many people realise how many fish can handle colder water including cherry shrimp Also cooler water means less algae and less maintenance when it comes to trimming plants because they grow slower
its a nice setup and a realy cool underrated fish. I think the Airpump ist great, as the White Clouds love some water movement. I have the golden variant of the white clouds in my minipond, and i love them. very active fish. however its not very easy to keep the right temperature for them, i had them with with room temperature before, and they all died in between 9 months. i guess they still had to warm and i read the prefere even a colder period every year. but i didnt have an open lid at this time, that can also make a difference with the temperature.
I Love your videos Matt you inspired me to get a 90L tank. I’ve fully upgraded the filter with better foams ceramic filter media etc and I’ve got 7 red and blue cherry shrimp 8 neons and 10 ember tetras and it’s not over stocked and I prefer lower quantities of fish, it looks so much more natural! I had also planted a lot of great plants (everything from Maidenhead aquatics 😎) and it looks amazing in my opinion for the first tank I have ever had before, I have a pond but that’s nothing compared to scaping an aquarium. I’d love to show you and see what your thoughts are! For a great dimmable light for cheap I went for the seaoura led light I can set how long its on. I can change the blue light intensity and the white light intensity or all together and it grows my plants amazingly! For £23 I’m not to disappointed
Absolutely love the centerpiece wood, it’s weird I’ve been in the hobby for quite some time and still haven’t kept Whiteclouds also. Definitely have to give them a go at some point as the breed so easily for my friends!
I don't know about goldfish being easy, they have a brighter looking life expectancy than me 😂 and never want to live in balance with what's around them. I found them really rewarding but got to the point where they were just too much work and found myself looking for problems rather than enjoying my tanks. This looks great matt, maybe airstones don't have a traditional place in an aquascape but I find them helpful in my planted aquariums. Just uploaded a short of one of my tanks pearling running a sponge filter, definitely can be done
I got rice fish in my Aquarium now from my balcony pond. In germany i never saw them in stores and i got mine from a local breeder. I saw one laid eggs and hope for some babies soon. They are Coldwater too. I also had Velisneria in that pond and it would go down to like 15°C. They multiplied a lot
Please do more videos about Coldwater tanks. Bonus for low tech. I am looking at doing 2, 5 gallon no tech jars with clear tubing connecting them for the fish to swim through. Your knowledge on such set ups would be wonderful!!
I like air stones! In fact recently I've added a USB air pump (little cylindrical one off amazon - super quiet!) and a little USB battery pack so there will at least be some agitation for a few hours if power goes out. Lots of fish seem to enjoy the bubbles too. Those interpet filters are OK but I don't love replaceable cartridges. I've got one as a second filter on a temporary/hospital setup at the moment and ended up taking the ceramic media out of the plastic holder and using it with a chunk of generic foam instead. You can definitely get loads more media in there (I added a big chunk of sponge and a big handful of extra ceramic rings), and it'll all be washable and useable for ages, where the green pad and carbon pad were definitely past their best after a couple of months. I just don't love throwing filter media away - that's got all your lovely bacteria living on it!
I hate it when that happens 😂 the wood isnt that sinky 😂 I laughed out loud. Not at you, with you. Ive done it loads of times. Love this build Matt. Thank you ❤ Ive got that airstone under my wood in my 200l tank . It works well agitating the surface water.
great video. I have a 10 gallon that Im getting ready to re-aqua scape and stock with some different fish. These fish have now made it to my list of potential options. I would love to see other options for small fish that would be great schooling fish for a 10 gallon tank.
My only tank is a temperate tank. Sits at around 20-22 degrees but it does go lower in the winter. Currently it has white cloud mountain ninnows, odessa barbs and peppered corys in it. Got a good range of plants which are also thriving. Including Monte Carlo I think the gold variety of white cloud mountain minnows may have suited this tank a bit better as their colour would have complimented the orange sand and dragon stone Great scape. I was fearful for you at the start as that was a large piece of wood which can be tricky as you are at times limited on its positioning in a smaller tank.
I like to call those tanks "subtropical" rather than cold water. Perfect for danios and such! been using air stones in aquascaped tanks with plants for a long time and never had any issues! :) But they're all low tech tanks.
Hey Matt, i use an airstone in my aquarium but only when the lights are off. i basically use it to prevent biofilm forming on the surface of the water and to ensure oxygen when the plants are not photosynthesising. its only a small hygger ceramic pump so nothing too strong.
I admit I was skeptical about that piece of wood but I absolutely love the final result! Bravo! Might I suggest some black Neo Shrimp? I know they can do well with the "cold water" setup and black ones would stand out amazing on that wood, stone, and substrate. I think they would do well and breed fine in there being there are lots of places to hide in the wood and amongst the plants.
I have rice fish and love them. Waiting to move house so I can set up a tank for them. Have around 60 I think. At the moment they are outside in a water feature.
Hey Matt! I'm a newer subscriber enjoying your channel. You missed the Gargoyle on a rampart wall, with the Big Wood. I'm setting up a 65 gallon that was derelict while I spent three years in hospital stays. I had a few water boxes that I could not care for so after three years of recovery here I go. I want to set up several types of scale on this long tank but I am starting with hard scape first, then plants then hopefully after a couple of months I hope to add my living critters. Between you and Corey I hope I can get my brain working again. Love you and your dog! ❤
its strange to me how ingrained it is in so many peoples minds (including mine before i kept fish for a while) that goldfish are a kind of standard fish to keep for beginners. like, if you arent in the hobby and you asked someone to name a fish people keep they would say goldfish. wonder if its the name or something, but there are so many more intriguing fish that are easier to keep
I want a video of you doing tank maintenance on this tank while you talk about all the kinds of coldwater fish you can keep in a tank this size. I live in a place where the power goes out sometimes and I am not willing to get fish that can’t be happy if the heater goes down. There are many fish keeping channels that talk about tropical fish but there aren’t many videos that discuss all the coldwater fish. The information would be excellent to have. Maybe a walk through the fishshop? Pointing out the fish thst would be happy without a heater?
Nice scape! Won't the minnows, when larger, be more appreciative of a longer tank? I have 7 in a 80cm shallow and they are fast little fish that use all the space. Not like other nano fish that stay more in place and move in and out of the plants and hardscape. I Like the look of the airpump, but hate the sound of the bubbles! That's why mine only run at night or holidays as back up for the filters to prive oxygen😂. Got a small airpump running right now for some cory eggs and its running me up a wall. Thankfully it gets warm enough this week to have the room ventilator on to mask the sound lol.

This looks great matt, maybe airstones don't have a traditional place in an aquascape but I find them helpful in my planted aquariums. Just uploaded a short of one of my tanks pearling running a sponge filter, definitely can be done
That's awesome I'll go check it out!
They are a great little Coldwater fish, I actually have some very special ones in quarantine at the moment!
@@FishShopMattlove to see the setup for them 😊
@@KN3TO 100% it will be a video on the channel.
Nope, it’s definitely a wild bore. 😊
THIS VIDEO WAS ENCOURAGING
Love the air bubbles😊
Please do more videos about Coldwater tanks. Bonus for low tech. I am looking at doing 2, 5 gallon no tech jars with clear tubing connecting them for the fish to swim through. Your knowledge on such set ups would be wonderful!!
There is definitely a place for an air stone here. It looks very cool!
I think so too!
I love air pumps, this has finished the tank off perfectly
White clouds were my first ever fish (apart from childhood betta in a bowl smh) and I love them dearly, so nice for them to get a feature here!
I have a cold water varatious platy tank. They are epic !
Including Monte Carlo
I think the gold variety of white cloud mountain minnows may have suited this tank a bit better as their colour would have complimented the orange sand and dragon stone
Great scape.
Sounds perfect!!!
I like the air stone. Nicely done! 😃
Un grand merci pour la vidéo!
love frome the philippines please make a shallow low tech aquarium and what fish is good for shallow tank tank you keep up the good work❤
I absolutely adore the white cloud mountain mino
I admit I was skeptical about that piece of wood but I absolutely love the final result! Bravo! Might I suggest some black Neo Shrimp? I know they can do well with the "cold water" setup and black ones would stand out amazing on that wood, stone, and substrate. I think they would do well and breed fine in there being there are lots of places to hide in the wood and amongst the plants.
cold water lets goooo. love your tanks man
Appreciate it
very beautiful tank i love the aquaescaping
I have rice fish and love them. Waiting to move house so I can set up a tank for them. Have around 60 I think. At the moment they are outside in a water feature.
When you next to a coldwater setup I would recommend paradise gourami as they are a wonderful and highly overlooked fish I just recently got some!!
Peppered corys can also be temperate as well as three lined corys.
I've not tried, but there's reports you can also keep CPD in temperate tanks.
I like the bubbles :)
its strange to me how ingrained it is in so many peoples minds (including mine before i kept fish for a while) that goldfish are a kind of standard fish to keep for beginners. like, if you arent in the hobby and you asked someone to name a fish people keep they would say goldfish. wonder if its the name or something, but there are so many more intriguing fish that are easier to keep
Totally agree but it is lessening when I first started working in the hobby it was every other new customer wanted goldfish now it's definitely less.
Cool music selection, wicked dragon head
this turned out great matt
I want a video of you doing tank maintenance on this tank while you talk about all the kinds of coldwater fish you can keep in a tank this size. I live in a place where the power goes out sometimes and I am not willing to get fish that can’t be happy if the heater goes down. There are many fish keeping channels that talk about tropical fish but there aren’t many videos that discuss all the coldwater fish. The information would be excellent to have. Maybe a walk through the fishshop? Pointing out the fish thst would be happy without a heater?
I am very interested in this so it is minimal in that not needing heat easier for me😊
Hi Matt. Great content as always. Has inspired me to try a cold water setup myself.
What cabinet do you have your aquariums on?
These were cabinets made for a nail salon that I rescued from the rubbish.
Love your videos Matt
